THE MOST DIFFICULT ENGINE I HAVE TAKEN APART - RUST VS RESTORER - FORD FLATHEAD V8

  • In this video, join me on a challenging journey as I tackle the most seized and rusted early Ford flathead engine I've ever encountered. It was a true battle against corrosion and decay, but we're trying our best to bring this classic engine back to life!
    I start by removing the heads, unveiling a layer of rust, dust and even a surprising hole in one of the pistons. Then, the intake proved to be no walk in the park, with layers of stubborn gunk to clear away. But the real challenge was disassembling the 16 valves with every single guide being seized, which required a lot of patience and determination.
    To make the process even more interesting, I had to craft an engine stand to flip the engine over and dismantle the bottom end, and trust me, it wasn't a walk in the park. Using a heavy hammer, I had to coerce the pistons down, adding to the excitement and challenge of this restoration.
    Now that the engine is finally taken apart, it's time to assess the damage and determine if this classic piece of automotive history can be salvaged. Don't miss this captivating journey of restoration and the battle against rust - it's all right here in this video! Subscribe, like, and stay tuned for more classic car restoration adventures!

    Didn’t know much about flatheads til I came across one of your shorts a few days ago, have probably watched 10 or so videos last 2 days on these motors just cause they’re so interesting and cool. Great video man! Wishing you goodluck with this and any future flathead builds!

      Will do Coty! next video is me trying to weld a intake runner I broke then heading to the machine shop and hope it can be sleeved. If not it might be the end... unless I come up with something clever to do with it.

    If this engine is scrap you should try and get a 1953 Mercury Flathead, They are 256ci and have a better transmission setup. I would have used the engine you have as a boat anchor.

    • @calirod
      @calirod  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks! I am aware of the the Merc and even the French blocks… but the purpose was not to build the best here … it was to learn as much as I can and if out of it came a running flathead that was a bonus… this way if I ever get the chance to build a high end motor I would have more experience 🤘🏽

    Not a good idea to support a flathead on a stand by the trans to engine bolts. A good way of cracking the weak metal.

    • @calirod
      @calirod  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah a few people mentioned that, so I supported it with a 2x4 then made an appropriate stand as soon as I could.

    So basically, flathead engines are like upside-down heads cast into the block..
    Makes me wonder why ford did this when there was already overhead valve engines to copy?

    • @calirod
      @calirod  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Pretty much… and it was to save cost and make the engine as cheap as possible so it could be sold to the masses. OHV engines were being made at the time but the extra molds, and assembly of those parts made them much more expensive and only found on luxury cars.

    • @privateprivate1865
      @privateprivate1865 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @calirod yeah that's what I heard too.
      But it still required a simple flat head to be cast, but the springs and valve parts still had to be assembled inside the block.
      It just seems like either I'm missing something, or that maybe it might have been a marketing tale to convince buyers that good old Henry Ford only did it to save money and pass the savings on to the buyers.
      Which I doubt.. because most engines were flathead, and im not even sure if most buyers understood to significant differences between ohv and valve in block.
      Oh.. well.. I guess they really only have to machine top side of thr valve block , vs both top and bottom of a cylinder head?
      I wonder how much machining had to be done on the inside/underside of valve area in the flathead v8?
      I've never worked on one..obviously..but I want one

    • @calirod
      @calirod  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is a good point, never thought of the marketing perspective. That would have been clever :)

    • @calirod
      @calirod  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mmm not exactly, if the engine was trash you begin with and I have never taken a flathead apart it served a purpose of experience when I take one apart that is not seized. Sometimes old engines and old car require “destruction” to give it another life… to itself or to others.
