Next time you are in Bulgaria , as I think there is a lot places you can visit ( and I think you will be back :D :D :) ) , try the ''Ovcharska salata'' or in EN will be ''Shepards salad'' is rated N1 by FoodAtlas and I think deserves it . As well if you can visit any of the villiages you will be amazed what a home-made food is . I am born in Bulgaria , City of Rousse ( North Bulgaria, in the border with Romania) . If you ahve any questions , just ask , the community is here to help :) . Happy to see tourists enjoying some of our traditional cuisine : )

The red sauce with the meatballs is called lutenitsa and is literally a symbol of Bulgarian cuisine. This product is a registered geographical indication for agricultural products or food that falls within the scope of EU protection. Bulgarians are fanatical when it comes to lutenitsa :)).

@@vernonandmaryana It's very tasty! Variations of this roasted vegetable paste can be found across the Balkans. If you're visiting Romania you can order zacusca, it's being served as a spread.

The Айран is made of yogurt is just yogurt and water with some salt , and is perfect for the summer to keep hydrated. Also the real Bulgarian yogurt is natural probiotic so yes is healthy , and when you drink it as salty Айран with salt can help with low blood pressure. The Боза is made of wheat , that why you found it similar to oat meals.

First time ever trying them, they paired well for a great breakfast. Will look for them in the stores. Any other recommendations for food?

I didn't saw you try a really good traditional summer cold soup - Tarator you will love it, is made of yogurt and cucumber , and is perfect to pair with musaka or pepper burek. Also some of are traditional foods are made more in the winter time , as that is where the main ingredients for them are made like the sour cabbage. I would recommend for dinner a restaurant called : Чевермето / Chevermeto , is not far from your hotel , i suggest you to book a reservation around 8pm as they have and performance after that hour.

@@vernonandmaryana Banitza is oven baked not fried. And there are meat or vegetable fillings variants including spinach, sorrel, docks, mangold, chards, beet leaves, nettles, radish leaves, leeks, onions and spring onion greens, parsley, cabbage, or sauerkraut. Try something different 🙂

Feta, literally translated from Greek, means white cheese. During communism, we could not export it to the west, so we sold it to the Greeks. They then changed the name and sold it as their product. They never had real white cheese, but because of their great marketing and publicity in England, it's now thought of as a Greek product.
