Batman Should Just Give His Money Away - The Worst Batman Take Ever

  • I've been noticing a resurgence of this really bad take when it comes to DC Comics and Batman himself that Bruce Wayne is a selfish obsessed man unwilling to give away money to charity and help Gotham City the normal way. I wanted to take a few minutes today to talk about why this claim is utterly ridiculous. #batman #dccomics #superhero

The "Batman should just give his money away" take is right up there with "Batman should just kill x/y/z" in the league of "frustrating and annoying and woefully ignorant surface level takes on the character from people who clearly don't actually give a shit or actually pay attention to anything he's in"

I'm surprised no one has pointed this out, but "The Batman" (2022) recently just addressed this issue.
    Spoilers Below:
In the movie, Bruce found out his father Thomas set up a fund with millions/billions of dollars and purposefully removed as much bureaucratic red-tape as possible so that he could easily invest that money into either infrastructure or charity work when he became mayor. However, his untimely death and the lack of oversight allowed multiple high-ranking government officials and crime-bosses to embezzle the money for years.
This basically shows that Bruce just can't throw his money around without a careful plan because if he does, it's very easy for someone to embezzle or misuse said money.

And, like you said, these people assume all Gotham needs is a generous philanthropist. That's just not true. The entire reason that Bruce became Batman was because Gotham needs more than a generous philanthropist.

The thing about Batman as an idea is that it only works when he’s both Bruce Wayne the philanthropist and the vigilante. That’s what made The Batman so good to me. Bruce wasn’t having an effect on crime and things only got worse due to him completely neglecting the Bruce Wayne persona. Because while Batman can stop crime momentarily and is a necessity to save lives, Bruce Wayne can use his money and power to fix Gotham’s broken institutions. He can’t just do one or the other he has to be both. I think that’s what makes Batman so interesting to me

Also misunderstood in how people think that he needs to just be Punisher dressed as a bat. That's one of the things the 2022 movie got right, the fact that Batman is the type of person to both kick in the teeth of people who need it, as well as consoling a child who just lost their parent(s) to a crime. 1. Who in the world wants to read a comic about a dude donating money to a charity, that is lame
    2. Just because Bruce would donate to charity doesn't mean gotham would instantly be crime free. What about the Batman villains who are mentally ill, and the ones who aren’t just evil? Is building a hospital and donating to a charity just gonna make them quit crime? No, what if he donates it to make arkham safer? Gotham is literally cursed I don't think that would fix it...

There's a lot to unpack from this notion that is worth applying to other ideas as well. There's a tendency among most people to want to solve the symptom of a problem rather than the cure. After all, the symptom is the 'real problem' in the eyes of most people, but solving the *actual* 'real problem' requires complexity, time, effort and money more often than it doesn't, which is a harder sell to make to people whether you're a businessman or a politician.
Why can't Bruce just give his money to the poor and hope it resolves the issue? Because that doesn't address the systemic issues that result in them being poor in the first place. Batman doesn't either, but it comes *closer* to doing so by addressing the corruptoin that is, in part, responsible for poverty. It is the best thing that he can realistically do to deal with that matter. Not even running for office would be sufficient for this when considering how ingrained that rot is. It's self sustaining, and directly joining the system to resolve it won't let him dig it out anywhere nearly as effectively as Batman can.
Of course, there are real world examples beyond poverty. Immigration, gun control (more an American problem than anywhere else), abortion, climate change to name a few. A lot of people seem to believe that the answers to these are simple, when they are patently not. Find the root cause for the issues and try to address them. Don't ignore them, don't attack the symptom, because the disease will be left festering away. Bubbling and fermenting until it rises potentially worse than before.
If you're having a gut emotional reaction to some of my examples there, step back and think again. You're falling into the same trap. I promise you, whatever issue you're thinking of replying to me about, it *is more complicated than that*. You're not necessarily on the wrong side of the debate, just wrong in how you're thinking about *solving* the issue.
I hope that's clear. Think! Always think! While it's good to feel, let your brain chime in now and then too.

It's my favorite animated movie and since I've been with Batman for a long time it makes me really happy since I get there same feeling out of that movie. The history from even completely different versions of Batman still stacks into other versions even if they aren't in that timeline which makes me care for most Batman variations. Like all the general stuff carries over which also helps with a movie like that. I wish I could send pictures on here but I've been collecting these new awesome McFarlane DC figures and most are just Batman. You'll see a couple Superman figures or Green Lantern but oh there is Carrie Kelley Robin and now there is Flashpoint Batman and now there is Arkham City Grundy or Arkham Asylum Batman and much more everywhere. He's just brought me so much joy in moments where I need it. There's so much content from Batman I STILL haven't seen which keeps it fresh as well. I love him so much I got 100% completion on all Arkham games and accidentally, in order. Batman and DC are a huge part of my life. It's weird because the new Batman movie came out ON MY BIRTHDAY! So I went with family and had a Batman birthday. Had the littler ceasers Bat Pzza, the Riddler from the new Batman movie from McFarlane and a Batposter. 1. EVEN in shows like Harley Quinn in which they follow the joke of "why not use that money for something better-?" is shown that the foundations exist... and hell, most of the time the charities are the reason why Bruce Wayne is popular to BEGIN with xd
    2. Also I feel like this solution is ignoring how Gotham is/is written, it got social issues, but MOST of the issues are related to comically large webs of mafia, corruption, AND super-powered psychos, his main focus is to stop them so there isn't something actively stopping any social-related project... the city is a setting for an action/detective character so it MAKES SENSE to give that approach *and is not as unrealistic as some may think* (I'm from Ecuador and besides a lot of economical and social crisis, one of the biggest issues are gang violence and A LOT of hitmen, hell, even if we stay in the US territory, when Batman appear in comic it was also an era in which the biggest fear was related to mobs), so Batman putting a significant part of the money into the war-on-crime is not unresponsible, he needs to do that so the charities can actually work in a safe manner :v7

I forget the exact context of the comic but it was during Rebirth a few years ago where Batman and Damian worked together to find a missing child from an orphanage or something that was funded by the Wayne foundation.
They find the kid and rush him to the Emergency room. The kid apologizes to Batman, and Batman asks him why? The kid replied “because Superman is my favorite hero” Batman smiles and says, “ I’ll let you in on a secret, he’s my favorite hero too”. The boy then loses consciousness and Batman and Robin rush him into the ER.
Batman and Robin both sit in the waiting room for hours until the doctor finally gives them the news that the boy had passed.
Later Bruce had figured out that the man who was running the place the boy was from, was taking bribes or giving up the kids for money or something like that. Bruce stormed into the office with Damian in tow to confront him about the evidence they collected. Then Bruce snuffed the guy in the face right before the GCPD came in to arrest the man. There was a time skip where Bruce and Damian reopened the establishment with a promise to be better, and they named the place after the boy who had died.
There’s always corruption and money dosent fix things, the point is that Bruce and Batman never give up and are constantly looking to help in whatever way they can. Try try again till you get it right. It’s what makes these characters so compelling and inspiring.

With or without the mask he still helps the city but if he's Bruce Wayne that won't stop Joker, Riddler, Court of Owls! Batman helps the city in the best way possible Bruce can't stop Joker with just money Batman can stop Joker with a few blows plus Batman has sold his money to the city here's a few
Batman White Knight: Bruce gives all his money when it turns out he isn't a Wayne pure to heart and he served the jail time
Bruce Wayne funds Arkham Asylum for the medical equipment
Batman helps the city by putting away the criminally insane so they can get proper treatment, He's helped the GCPD countless times
Batman and Bruce help the city in different ways and it's enough for the city of Gotham, in a way Batman is Gotham's light to a better world

This debate is pointless to those who have never read a batman comic or other batman media instead of movies. My first though of the debate was from Scott Synder’s court of owls vol 1, in the first 15 pages Bruce is hosting an event claiming that he will build a ‘ better’ Gotham. I put inverted commas on better coz Gotham will never get better. It is a city that is fated to fall into crime and corruption. A city that can’t be repaired no matter how much money the elites try to invest in. That’s the main plot for The Batman 2022, After the death of Thomas Wayne who tried to get the renewal fund for Gotham, the fund immediately was a power grab thus Falcone using the funds to pay the system for his own bidding. Anyways it’s a pointless debate 😂. Batman for life 🦇

Philanthropy is what got them Wayne parents killed. So doing same mistake as their parents would've set bruce on same path.

I hear similar arguments all the time with Superman.
"If he's so good powerful why doesn't he do things like topple dictatorships and stop wars? If he's really a hero who cares about saving lives why doesn't he share Kryptonian medical technology with people like the cure for cancer?"
But almost nobody makes responses to those arguments the way they do for the attacks on Batman. Because nobody really gives a crap about Superman anymore.

In Batman v. Superman the Wayne Foundation gave money to the victims of Metropolis. Ironically in that movie it was Bruce Wayne giving money to the victims and Lex Luthor literally rebuilding the city. Great video 👍🏼
Batman is real. The emotions he gives us will always be real.

This take also just ignores the fact that the city of Gotham is literally cursed to be a perpetual hell hole. So throwing money at the problem would only do so much here.

whats hillarious is bruce became batman because of the rampant crime in the city and the rampant corruption in the police. hell his first big bads he wants to defeat are Falcone and maroni aka mob bosses who are rich as hell in bribing anyone trying to help the city

I thing that's cool and sucks about batman is that intimidation and image of fear he has really out shine the hope that he actually produces. The audience kinda forgets that and media, parodies and jokes about the character doesn't help. Gotham kinda does that to ya I guess twists things where batman had to become like what he combats we tend to forget the good. The batman movie did highlight that at the end which us awesome, the hope for a better tomorrow

All those “poor people” Batman fights
Like Mr Freeze, and Penguin and Joker.
I guess Solomon Grundy doesn’t make a lot of money so

Solomon Grundy was pretty rich before he died. He had a silver ring with his name engraved on it.

My favorite example of Batman helping the poor isn't even in a Batman comic. The original Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle run reveals Bruce has a company that gives out loans to small businesses to get them actually start which is important in the comics as it allows Jaime to get his father's auto-shop running again after it was foreclosed near the start of the comic.

to be fair, he probably does give his money away to charity. it just doesnt make for good action movie fodder so they never show it on screen.

People who would cross the street rather than give a charity a nickel are always advocating for others to give their money away. Even fictional characters.

Also, in Batman, White Knight; an alternate version of batman where he goes off the rails and becomes a destructive menace to Gotham, there is this fund that is used to pay for all the damage batman causes. People think its publicly funded which turns public opinion against batman, but its revealed that it's entirely funded by companies owned by Wayne Corperation. Even when he is the villian he is paying out the nose to help gotham.

Actually, CBR had an article recently posted about characters in BTAS that have aged poorly. I think you should look at the list and prove how wrong they are.
