  • Smile (From Charles Chaplin's "Modern Times" - 1936)
    with Judy Garland
    Smile (Charles Chaplin)
    Smile,
    Though your heart is aching
    Smile,
    Even though it's breaking,
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
    If you smile
Through your fears and sorrow, smile
    And maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you.
Light up your face with gladness,
    Hide ev'ry trace of sadness,
Altho' a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying,
    Smile,
    What's the use of crying,
You'll find that life is still worhwhile,
    If you just smile.

It's the only way to sing this song. Depending on how it's sung, it can sound preachy or it can be a song about wanting nothing more in life than to be happy and spread happiness through the darkest of times.

You can clearly hear in this magnificent rendition of the classic song, "Smile" by Judy Garland, why she and Karen Carpenter are equally the 2 greatest-ever female singers of popular music! Both had the incomparable ability to not only bring out from deep within themselves the extreme sadness of the lyrics in a song, but also (along with Marilyn McCoo) to enunciate song lyrics better than any other female singer of popular music! Having said that, Nat King Cole's outstanding rendition of this song remains to this day the single best version of this great song and my personal favorite version!

I know, right?? In many ways she was strong, but then she had such a vulnerability like a 7 year old little girl. I have so much compassion for her. Just a loving lady who did the very best she could and to her it seemed never enough.

lyn, THE greatest performer, male or female. Nobody could touch an audience like Judy. She could make you laugh with her tremendous sense of humor. Then rip your heart out with her next song. She touched people like no one else. Plus she had a mesmerizing presence that just pulled her audience in, as though they were wrapping their arms around her, and they didn't want to let go.

Watching this for the millionth time to let Judy remind me that I don't have to choose between the hurt in me and the smile I wish to give; I can acknowledge both. This performance understands you and holds you. Not by music and word alone, but by being delivered to you by a human soul that understands pain.

So many singers today belt out songs so loudly like they're going to bust their pipes and all the endless vocal runs like they have a snake caught in their throat.
Garland is a master class in true feeling in straight pure singing without all the bells and whistles. Volume that isnt jarring but stirring. Powerful but internal, not external.

There is just something that very few ARTISTS can convey these days, like Judy Garland. To me, I can FEEL her emotional, turbulent, heartbreak and pain, that makes me want to cry for her, the World, and the unfairness of it all. Then she can makes me BELIEVE, she, I, and the World can smile, and keep on gently, persisting through it all, and we will be positive and get there. What a genius!

+Catherine Blair I think part of authenticity of artists like this is due to the fact that Judy here is clearly singing to herself, almost oblivious to the audience, as though this is the same performance she would give in private at home in front of the mirror. Everything today is produced for the masses, forsaking the individual. She wanted to believe this, she needed to believe this song, but just ... couldn't for some reason.

Catherine Blair that’s why she was the world’s greatest entertainer of the 20th century. When she sang it was her being her and that’s what made her genuine. When she had her weekly series back in 1963-64, CBS gave her a huge trailer for her dressing room and comfort. They producers hung a sign on her door that read simply, “The Legend”. She just wasn’t a living legend, she was “THE LEGEND”. That alone speaks volumes. Thank goodness for TH-cam and dvd and cds that keeps her memory and talent alive from future generations to marvel at. With lackluster singers today that use every technological trick in the book to sound good, the younger generation will see what real talent is and what great singer Judy Garland was. Many are floored when they stumble upon her clips and see this tiny woman with the greatest voice of all time alone on stage mesmerizing her audiences. lol we have great taste don’t we?! 😊👍🏻

Charlie Chaplin didn't write the lyrics to the song. he Just wrote the sheet music. It was soundtrack music made for the 1936 movie "Modern Times". I was a very odd Millennial child: I loved the Golden Era of movies and my favorite actress was Judy. She was so easy to relate to. She didn't put on the pretense of being famous or anything special- she just was. Her voice always brings me back to watching her in my mom's sewing room: the hum of the sewing machine, the puff of the iron, the quiet cursing when she messed up. Now that she's gone, Judy speaks for her in this song. I've cried so many years in my life that I know they are but a temporary relief for very permanent pain. The only way to lessen the blow is to choose happiness, choose to smile.
Thank you, Judy. I hope you can smile now without tears in your eyes. I'm trying.

There is little to add to what's been said here by others, except how lucky we are to have this stunning performance captured in real-time, in front of us, as though we were standing just a few feet away from her. The camera does little except move in and out - there are no cuts, no fancy angles, just a single shot, capturing Judy's brilliance in one continuous take.

A superb example of Garland's mastery of layering. With breathtaking candor she says: yes, I've known sadness and I'm singing about smiling. Then she inscribes the lyrics on our hearts. She is saying: smiling through pain is as difficult, perhaps, as your hearing me sing this song. But the smiling...and the hearing... are WORTH DOING. Note also how each time a lyric repeats, she gives it a different point of view. 'Tears' the first time are a child's. 'Tears' the second time are hers--and ours.

I always pictured her as her youthful self. Young Dorothy. For some reason though, I felt sad knowing that an older Judy sang this. It seemed to me like she grew decades since I first watched The Wizard of Oz ten years ago, while I only grew ten years.

What makes her performance so wonderful is that she embodies that tension between sadness and happiness, which is the subject of the song. There is a point at about 2:23 where her demeanor changes slightly, and you can see she is fighting harder (through the song) to remain happy. She doesn’t just sing the song, she becomes the song.

This is so perfect right now. My sister is an ICU nurse taking care of covid-19 patients. She's strong, very strong but even she breaks down in tears at everything they are facing at the hospital amidst this crisis. It is not easy to watch so many people die and knowing they can not even see their families one last time is heartbreaking.
Me and my sisters and mother just watched the new Judy Garland movie before things got bad where we are. So I will send this to my sister, the nurse who's birthday is in just a few days time where she will spend it with the patients she is caring for and fellow frontliners and then alone in quarantine at home, in hopes it will brighten her day.
What a time we are living in. Stay strong everyone. Find a way to help in your community in anyway possible. Follow health recommendations to not only reduce illness and death but to help those working so hard and putting their lives on the line trying to manage the situation for us all. A big thank you for all those people doing their part to make things better and not worse. And remember, Smile, every chance you get. Do it in defiance of hopelessness, of the fear and the uncertainty of these times. Do it in rebellion against the beast of chaos, smile a knowing smile though the face before you may only snarl and do not go gentle into that good night, but rage, rage against the dying of the light.

@@NHWUSuuu :) it's original though I'd have to say inspired by the world outside of myself. But how much of anything we think or say is truly original afterall? It's generally inspired at least in part by our shared human experience(s). So take it it's yours as much as mine ;)

@@NHWUSuuu i should mention that last bit the "rage rage against the dying of the light" is a bit from a poem of Dylan Thomas' poem 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night'. If you've never read it in full I highly recommend you do so. It's excellent.

Oh boy did I enjoy this! She is like a breath of fresh air. What emotions she has! This is why Barbara cannot touch this woman. Her emotions are just raw, along with an impeccable voice. I like hers and Diana's the best. It's not always about all those vocal dynamics, but the authentic emotions that are conveyed.

With help from his co-composer and arranger, Dave Raksin. The song words came years later, with some tweaking of the melody. Compare videos of MODERN TIMES like the last 2 minutes of the film. (Some folks even trace it to a love duet in TOSCA.)

Love the way she walks back svelte figure & sequined dress to piano. 0:41 transitioning to solution; rolls eyes up at "sun come shining through" 0:58; hear how she turns the 5th 1:05, "tear every so near" (leans in to mic) 1:32 followed by head-nodding resolve; & Judy's operatic ending; gosh she has pipes!
