Although technically, she's still pronouncing it wrong by stressing the wrong syllables. She's pronouncing it "a-ri-GA-to", when it's supposed to be "a-RI-ga-to". She's supposed to stress the "ri" instead of the "ga".
@@lennypayne4241 both what Betty said and what you said are very wrong :') arigatou and some other Japanese words don't stress any of their syllables, rather change pitch and draw out vowels. Usually when there's a ō/oo/ou like in arigatou you change pitch on the drawn out "ou", sometimes even making it sound stressed. Like in "Tooru" and similar words. I'd suggest watching specific videos on Japanese pronunciation pitch

@@arpathia7262 Yes, this is accurate, sometimes we take out vowels such as u or i in some words, depends on the person tho, eg, "daisuki desu", it is commonplace to say it phonetically "daiski des" or for some people, even "daisk des" with a slight tint of an i at the end of daisuki. Same for just desu, a lot of people just say "des" and ones that do include all vowels, may do it to emphasize "cuteness", saying "daisuki desu" may make you appear as naive or childlike in some instances. Hope this made sense.

There's something just super sweet about this cartoon, just pure appreciation for Betty Boop's audience in Japan, no racist caricatures in the cartoon, in a time where racism in cartoons was incredibly normalized. It's really heartwarming, there was clearly so much love put into the cartoon, especially with translating the song into Japanese.
Yeah, there was a lot less incentive to be racist against East Asians pre-world war.
I think one of the main reasons most (most being key word here) Betty Boop cartoons weren’t over the top racist was because the Fleischer Family were immigrants and most of the studio in New York was too.

Are you serious? There were many reasond to be racist. You do realize there was a Chinese head tax during this time that was aimed at stopping Chinese from immigrating to the US, and fear of the "yellow peril" was perpetuated in many Western countries since at the late 19th century.

Did anyone notice that when Betty looks through her goggles, the scene of Japan was a full model made of miniatures, carefully scroll-animated to give the effect of parallax? That was an amazing use of miniatures in an otherwise 2D cartoon!

Also I like the character designs of the japanese audience.

I'm genuinely surprised on how wholesome and sweet this is, considering the fact that cartoons were on the rise in 1920s-1930s and world war two was also active at the time so racism was very common even in cartoons, making this episode very heartwarming

So part of the reason for this being so positive is because during this time Japan was opening up more to the world following the Meiji restoration. America had essentially forced the country to open its trading borders with the world (specifically them). Positive propaganda films like this would have been made to push the American people to view the Japanese people in a popular light, thereby opening up more trade connections. You’ll then see a sharp contrast in post-Pearl harbour propaganda concerning Japan. And then again another change back to positive propaganda post-ww2 during the post war economic boom in Japan as they were once again an important trade partner.

I watch this as a kid in early or mid 90s
and now watching this after 20+ years, its really surprising how the creator put so much respect to Japanese culture+people really ahead of its time where its full of racism in classic cartoons, and singing in Japanese is a surprising and beautiful gesture to her audience
The creator was aware how much Japanese people loved Betty Boop, so made sure to reciprocate that love back!
Even tho she was ment for a “gentleman’s erotic show character” she’s came so far!! She’s very intelligent,kind, and respectful to other people no matter cultures.

I love this. Omg Betty is so adorable. As a Japanese American, I am very glad this was made very wholesomely during its time period. I would always see the older cartoons with very racist (or stereotypical) looks and always portrayed them to be very evil. Betty managed to make this adorable masterpiece during the time that it was not looked at that way. Classic Betty Boop ☺️

Same! My dad is Japanese and my mom is American. My mom’s side of the family has always been extremely racist towards my dad, especially because my great grandfather (on my mom’s side), was alive during this period and was very anti-Japanese. It’s great to see that not everyone during this time period was racist or stereotypical, because even though I wasn’t alive during this time, I’m very nostalgic to the 1930s-50s. I love old cartoons, but hated the controversy.

Tho it was my Grandma Yoko who lived in Japan during the war (and had to follow her mom to every bombing locations due to being a nurse) she had a hard time with other races. Such as the Chinese (which is funny cause i can speak that language too) and on my moms side, it was my grandfather who also served in the war and HATED the Japanese, so he always had a hard time looking at us.

I was honestly expecting this to be as bad as Felix the cat in Japan, but this was adorable and really nice. Betty Boop is still an incomparable queen.

No racist caricatures, nothing offensive. That episode of Betty Boop really shows how they respect the fans from Japan and make sure the culture is authentic, which is probably the reason I love this episode so much😊.
I can say the same thing with Mario Movie and Netflix's One Piece. They didn't just pander the fans, they respect them and love them.
Stuff like that is what I need with everything going on with the world.

I watched this when I was six and I didn't even know Japan existed back then, and being 17 now, knowing what I do now, it's only made it more fun to watch this again today.

For some reason I just adore the fact that Betty Boop has seemingly united the earth and ended all global suffering because of this simple song that everyone loves so much. There’s even a short where she becomes the president of the u.s and makes the country a technologically advanced utopia.
It’s upsetting to think that if this were made a decade or so later the episode would have been much less respectful

I'll admit when TH-cam recommended this I was worried but it turned out to be genuinely wholesome.
I suggest researching the history of this film. A lot more to the story than you might expect.

The studio actually had Japanese students help a bit with this animation so that's why it wasn't as racist because they actually consulted Japanese individuals beforehand, this was also before WWII when people began drawing racist cartoons. This one however wasn't intended to be harmful, Just bring both Japanese and American people together

@@angel72987 I see how she could be considered one sometimes. In some interactions she was protrayed as a business owner, had her own home, rejected marriage when she would have been expected to settle down, ect. That seems normal now but back then it was taboo for a lot of people
@@angel72987 she's smart, capable, independent, and does things herself instead of relying on a man to save her, which was really common at the time in media. At the same time, she doesn't reject her femininity, embracing it and enjoying it. She's exactly what a young girl should strive to be, and I'm glad that people in that time period had a good example of a woman who took no garbage but still looked beautiful and dainty doing so.

It’s also because this was back along time, they wouldn’t have had a translator or someone to help them. When Betty was made, it was also racist and stereotyped. So in my opinion for their time it was really good,seeing as they didn’t have much to work with. Not saying you didn’t already know that lol

I used to LOVE to watch original 1930's Betty Boop episodes on TH-cam when I was 10 years old! I loved all of the episodes, but this was one of my absolute favorites, along with Minnie the Moocher!
