Why Ricciardo wouldn't be surprised if McLaren wins in F1 2022

  • McLaren has had a bad start to the 2022 Formula 1 season, managing just six points in the first two races of the season.
Given it has only the eighth-fastest car, it has a long way to go to turn its fortunes around and have any chance even of repeating last year's fourth place in the constructors' championship, let alone take on the leading teams.
Yet after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo said he wouldn't be surprised if the team could win a race later in the season. So while it was not a prediction, why was he so confident McLaren can make so much progress?

Here's the thing, it's a free development race, that's the plus side, there's no token homologation greatly limiting what you can and can't change (save engine) however, there's a budget cap and limited wind tunnel and CFD time so there will be no mass brute forcing resources to get your way through to a fix.

    • @lonyo5377

McLaren, like Ferrari is running a car that is widely similar to the one presented in February. That means that they have obtained a lot of data of the intrinsic characteristics of the car in its current form and it's easier for them to know where to focus. The upgrades they will (eventually) introduce in the first part of the season will be critical for them as they will see if the direction they have taken are correct, but if they are still a team that can react efficiently, while not forgetting that upgrades will be a rare treat in the coming years.

It could be that whatever is holding back McLaren is something they can fix much more simply than the issues facing Aston or Mercedes. Could you do a bit of an investigatory piece on the breaking link between F1 & F2 in terms of a route to F1?
Nobody seems to be highlighting this point but in the past 3 years, only 1 champion has graduated the season after they win and being realistic, this season will probably make it 3/4.
It used to be a given that the F2/GP2 champion would get an f1 seat the following season but now it doesn’t seem that way at all and it undermines the whole point of the F3/F2/F1 structure.
Have you guys heard anyone discussing this around the paddock and what do you think could be done about this in the future?

pay drivers get priority over graduates, this wasn't always the case until the pandemic hit and as you may not know, Haas, Williams, Racing Point now Aston Martin, and Alpine were all in financial trouble. All of these teams needed emergency funds to stay afloat and even the richest teams like Ferrari and Mercedes suffered huge losses on their revenue. It's more of a recent disconnect as if you notice before 2019, most F2 champions entered F1 i.e. Leclerc, Russell, etc. Things will probably change as time moves on as the bottomline is these teams would rather have drivers that can give them more on pure pace than just financial backing i.e. Latifi

The biggest questions for 2022 season imo:
    - Can McLaren return to the top spot and at quicker pace? (Mountain leap level of comeback)
    - How long can Haas stayed inside the top 10 given how they have no sponsorship money to keep them afloat easily?
    - Can Alfa Romeo keep their pace consistent?
    - When will Ferrari and Red Bull show the true pace of their cars? (Ferrari is currently not running their engine on it's normal settings whilst Red Bull is currently exceeding the maximum weight limit by 15kg the same as Mercedes)
    - Can Mercedes bounce back before Red Bull and Ferrari becoming too far to catch up? (statistically)
