. 👩✈️ Welcome back to Angle of Attack, your go-to platform for real-world flight lessons, aviation education, and all things flying! ✈️
If you're a future pilot, an aviation geek, or someone looking to learn to fly, today's pilot training video is just for you. I'm your dedicated CFI (Certified Flight Instructor), and we've got Sienna, a rising female pilot and student pilot working diligently on her private pilot certificate. She’s been acing her online ground school but is now eager for some hands-on flying lessons in a Cessna 172.
🔹 What's the Lesson Plan?
As part of our flight school curriculum, today we’re focused on takeoffs and landings. We're up in the Alaskan skies, giving you a taste of Alaska flying, which offers a unique and challenging environment for flight instruction. In this flight training video, we aim to teach Sienna, and you, the viewer, how to land an airplane effectively.
🔹 Why Cover the Instrument Panel?
If you've been through your online ground school, you'll know that while instruments are important, they aren’t everything. Sienna has been a bit instrument-obsessed, so we're covering up the panel. Why? To teach her to fly by the aircraft's attitude, the engine's sound, and visual cues. In essence, we want her to learn to land the airplane using her senses, honing her aviation skills beyond the dials.
🔹 What's In Store For You?
Experience a female pilot’s journey through aviation education.
Understand the intricacies of airplane takeoff and airplane landing.
Gain situational awareness insights crucial for any aspiring aviator.
Discover the art and science behind flying lessons in a Cessna 172.
🔹 Why is This Important?
Being an effective pilot isn't just about acing your flight instruction lessons. It's also about real-world flight experience. So, whether you're watching this as part of your own flight training or you're simply interested in what it takes to become a pilot, this video is an invaluable resource.

Thanks!
Wow that’s so generous. Thanks!
The day my CFI covered all instruments.
Hey, what’s your altitude?….. had nailed it.
Hey, what’s your airspeed?….. had nailed it.
Hey, are you trimmed out?….. let go of everything and the plane just flew steady.
That was a moment for both of us. For me, that I needed to trust myself and my plane; we had become a team. For my secondary CFI, that he had in practice taught me the feel of the plane.
I remember laughing my head off when I realized I flew a pattern, with every leg and altitude nailed, and one of my better landings….. all while the instruments were dead to me.
Glad to hear it worked!
the static beeping made it so hard to watch but I love these XD
To help Sienna with her lessons.
So so awesome. Thanks!
Hi Chris, it looked like y'all were cancelling each other when you kept steering for her, you turning right and Sienna could feel it and was trying to turn left because of it. I know it bugs me whenever someone else touches the yoke and I feel like they shouldn't touch it. I realize you have a much better feel for her progress than we do watching the video, it was just something I kept seeing over and over. Sienna is really coming along...I look forward to seeing each new video as she gets better and more comfortable. Good job to you both!!!
Nice flying Sienna! Keep the videos coming.
It’s great to see Sienna learning so much!!!
Sienna should start her own channel on her experiences getting her ppl. Would be inspirational to others considering aviation!
This is why the J-3 Cubs were such great trainers! If your instructor had broad shoulders you could NOT see any instruments. Not that the J-3's had many instruments! You had to learn how to fly by the seat of your pants! Thanks for the great informative videos!
As a student (54) I'd like to help Sienna. Keep up the good work.
You’re amazing. Thank you.
Great job sienna! Gonna be the coolest kid in school 🤙🏼
My CFI never did that, covered the instruments. What a fantastic idea!
Brought back memories. My CFI covered the panel with his coat and made me call out altitudes. It was also his way of getting the eyes out instead of looking at gauges so much. It worked! Good luck Sienna!!
Did you learn something from this video? Share a comment and tell us what it was!
Chris, not sure if you’re a fan of the book Stick and Rudder but I remember it really helped build on the concepts learned in flight training, especially the landing phase. In fact, I still remember some of the discussions 50yrs later.
Anyway, really enjoying watching Sienna’s progress and remembering all that pattern work before my solo. It’s that developing of muscle memory and understanding the visual clues that makes for a successful solo.
Huge fan of the book. Use its tenets often.
best series ever!
Speaking of attitude, that sure was a look she gave you at 1:49 when you were covering up the dials. Golden!
Danke!
Great job Sienna.
Thanks!
Good job!
Thanks
Thanks for sharing the adventure.
I really love ur videos. Ur such a soft coach. Well done sienna
Fun to watch!
Keep the training going. Doing great!
This is very rewarding to see Sienna's progress - great instructor.
I thought my CFI was nuts when he did this, but then my flying and my landings improved pretty much instantly! More people need to experience this and I'm glad you use this tool.
What did he do?
@@shemariogillete6958 cover all of the flight instruments like in this video.
Chris, Great job on the video. Sienna is really coming along. Great job on the teaching.
She is doing really a really good job nailing the centerline with rudder only movement and is not wing wagging now. The crosswind helps, I think, students realize that we use rudder only for longitudinal alignment and bank only for drift control. Good job. Yes, you tend to talk a bit much. I had the same problem. A student once said, "shut up Jim and let me do it." It is much better to talk much rather than ride the controls, however. Good job, both of you.
Good work Sienna
This made me hop on flight simulator. Can't wait to get behind the controls again. Awesome flying and training

Vc é muito cimpatico
Just purchased my LSA (D-MNTH) now am officially on the direction of going poor :) . Gladly helped Sienna (Super Thanks 5€). Every little bit helps! Greeting from Germany EDAJ
Hard core instructor. She deserves this lol
Viajo Porque Preciso!! from Japan
the guy should change his dietary habits so that Sienna does not have to constantly compensate for the Cessna banking to the right all the time. if he does not they will soon need to install a double wheel on the right side landing gear.

Years ago my CFI covered up the instruments and I nailed easily with the sensory clues. That said I still feel it's a risky lesson.
What’s the risk?
My concern is that you are messing around at low altitude close to your DMMS. Yes I know people are doing it every day but I wonder if the lesson is worth the risk.
vim do Viajo porque preciso
I wish Recommend for Sienna, Check and learn Mistakes videos, From Others pilot Students , Learn and Comprension About These Mistakes..Before her , First Solo.. She s Going to be a Succesfull Pilot.
Abcs
I am from Brazil, be learning english. Sorry
Flying based on vibes. Nice lol
Has she gone solo yet? She looks more than capable of doing so.
Great video but please try to eliminate that repeating static noise!
If it's impossible, then editing software does the trick!
Are there any sort of education such as a High School Diploma collage degree or A GED?if so were there any GPA requirements to get to a flight school? Do instructors ask to see any of this before training?
amigo, no video leading edge cuff ?
Chris... Where can I buy one of those fancy instrument covers? Don't see it on the website...LOL!
What airport do you fly at
Hi Chris Palmer. I was wondering, how much is the cost for flight training? I know it's not cheap, but I am interested in knowing a price.
When departing R4, what would be your engine out option below 500ft over the water?
There’s a beach ahead.
@@angleofattack awesome 👌
See that when you say "Eyes out to the end of the rwy", she moves her hole head up? Maybe that's not really helping her to keep her attitude during the flare, since she may be looking outside using the bottom of her eyes
Good video, but what's that repeating screeching sound in the background throughout the video?
Probably the strobe light or beacon. Those lights make electrical noise in a lot of airplanes. Sometimes it can even be heard (well, noticed) in the headset. Usually though there's so much other sound and the lights are quiet enough where it is only heard in a recording.
