I am very surprised that a big marina like the one you work doesn't have an outboard test tank. I have a small shop as I am retired and work on boats as a Hobbie. I have a regular outboard stand that swivels and lower unit forks to work on gearcases. Outboards have been my life since 1969. wouldn't trade it for anything. Keep the video coming. Enjoy them very much. Only wish I was younger and know what I know now !

Some Carb Jets Have Three, Very Small holes to Atomize the Fuel , If You Run A Bit Thru It, It Will Run Rich.

Oxy acetylene torch cleaning kits are also very good for cleaning carby jets, just have to be careful with them as the are technically a file and are abrasive along the length of the needle

I love how we know that you know those are called orifices within the carb/jets and glad you’re joking in the vids and not being so perfect. Dry humor is gold.
Do you even have enough bloopers to put up a montage of them?
Y’all are on point at that marina 🤙

Great video that covers the general concept in a short amount of time.
I recently bought a boat with a Honda outboard that had cooling issues and the housing was completely melted. In order to fix it I had to replace it with a new kit and backwash the entire system to get all the pieces of impeller out.
Overall very informative video and keep up the awesome work!

I have a 2.5 Johnson 4 stroke and every year always the same problem with the carburetor.,and to clean and open the jets I find the sirange needle is a perfect tool to open small passages

  • @fishhunt9874
    @fishhunt9874 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just to give you an idea on what’s in the carburetor it is good to pull the drain plug from the bowl and drain the fuel through a paper towel. If it’s full of grit you know your jets are all clogged. Also instead of twisting a sharp drill bit to clear the jets possibly damaging them or changing their size. Thin single strand trolling wire works great to clear the tiny passages without the chance of altering them.

I love these videos man. I got a 1967 starcraft 16 that I bought as a stripped out hull. I did a tiller for awhile but wanted the freedom of a wheel. So I started watching you guys and now I got a dual battery system, a switch panel, and I installed steering system and hung a 2020 40hp mercury. I jury rigged a wash down with a bilge pump. I fish this boat out to about 35 miles off NJ for tuna and sharks. What do you recommend for hull protection? Or quick rivet repair? I'm thinking of having plates welded where it sits on my trailer. Those are the leaky ones only. I trailer to and from Philly too Atlantic City every weekend so she takes more abuse on the road. Any thoughts? I got a transom saver

I have a 1969 StarCraft Mariner V. Sixteen footer. Got mine like yours. Rotted out floors but good hull. Redid the whole inside. Have an Evinrude 48 SPL on mine. Love that little boat. Not much is made that well anymore. Oh and I’m also in NJ. (Northern)

If you are trying to start it, shouldn’t you have the impeller immersed in water? If it does start you’ve just toasted it. Also if the engine hasn’t ran for ages you’ll be wanting to inspect the impeller anyway, as if it’s brittle and it does start it might disintegrate and you’ll need to take the head off to pick the bits out out of the cooling paths. You also don’t want to be using a metal drill bit to clean a brass jet. Fishing line is what you want.

I run my small outboards dry then drain the bowls prior to winter. On the 2.5 horse dinghy outboard I try to only use real dyno gas, no ethanol. It has its own small, internal fuel tank. So far so good. “Cute, little lowers…”🤣

Water pump - rubber fatigue - abrasion - no cooling. The Achilles Heel of outboard motors.
2 seasons is long enough under 'normal conditions'. Severe duty should be as needed by the hours of operation. Failure is NOT an option. Even the housing gets scored. Pay now or Pay later.
Listen to the Technicians not the salesmen 👍Check your propellor pitch too.

In the beginning of this video you show a spark plug removed to check for dry or wet with gas the spark plug in the shot is quite obviously smashed by piston head then you continue on to a regular spark plug might want to edit that?

What was wrong with the Merc 3.5? Mine runs out of gas at wide open throttle. I know this because I installed a clear fuel filter. Ive tried a new carb as well as leaving the fuel cap off (vacuum). Possible it is running too low in the water and the carb drain tubes aren't venting? Anything else you can think of? Thanks!

I have a question. I come from Germany and i have a 1971 Johnsen electric drive with 60 HP 2 stroke. When it starts it is runny verry smoth but when u give it some gas the engine goes out. So u can only cruise in normal idel speed. I allready cleaned the caborator. Can u give me a hint where the problem is?

Have a Yamaha 2016 9.9 kicker outboard i use for trolling here in Sitka, Alaska. After trolling sometines for hours, would die, ruled out fuel issues and determined the while kill switch wire is causing the motor to die. I have a remote steering station where both the emergency lanyard and ignition switches have been replaced last year. Motor worked fine till recently died again while trolling. Disconnected the while kill wire under the cowling and motor runs fine all day long, but cannot turn off at the ignition because now disconnected. Had to choke the engine to stop. Cut the wire ends on both sides of the connector (which showed black carbon) and noticed the wire on the ignition harness side appeared black from possibe hear and/or corrosion. My first fix is to cut wire back further "1, reconnect with water resistent shrink crimp, add a small section of new wire and again using water resistent shrink crimp to the engine side of wire - your thoughts? Replacing the entire harness or running a stand alone wire from ignition to cowling are bigger jobs.
