    This video is hilarious and depressing at the same time. As someone who is looking for a first boat, it makes me stop looking at older boats whatsoever. Thank you for posting this.

      Depressing? Most if not all shown in this video was don around salt water. Even boats used in salt water can be in good shape if the owner has taken good care. Boats used in fresh water can get damaged or can be poorly maintained too. Boats up north usually are only used about half a year because of winter and cold weather. Boats in the south can be used year round and may have to stay in the water if the owner does not have a lift or cannot afford a trailer or rack storage. I think the video was very good giving us all a idea of what to look at perhaps before hiring a surveyor to look for us. You can see quite a bit on your own which can help you decide if you even want to make an offer or not.

      Bro don't rule out an older boat. There are a lot of them that don't require a ton of money to repair. They can be brought back to life for less than you think if you're willing to learn and do the work yourself. There are great guys out here willing to give away years of knowledge to help you do it right.

    Bring along a long time boater. Someone that has already spent his time and money in the nooks and crannies of a boat. Several times I was asked to evaluate a boat and several times I’ve told the prospective buyer “Please don’t walk away , just run!” or “Is that how much they are paying you to take it?” There can be deals but 95% of them need work and only experience (painful) can tell where.

    When I bought my used boat, he said no surprises. Luckily all that was wrong was a raw water pump and a $50 power steering hose crack. Never believe "no surprises". Thanks for the info.

      There is another question. I have a 2006 135 verado 4 stroke. The problem is the steering, the boat is a 2006 mako with uflex hydraulic with power assist. The seals leaked on the ram so I have replaced them but am having a problem bleeding out the system. There is very little information about theses systems on the internet. I have tried to bleed them the normal ways but just keep getting air bubbling out into the holding tank and no movement of the motor. I am thinking there may be an issue with the pump as I don’t hear anything when engine is running or with the key on. If you or anyone else can help, maybe point me in the right direction or give me some information it would be very grateful ( davesest@gmail.com).

    Buy a dollar store rubber mallet. Use it to gently tap the transom, hull and stringers. You want to hear and feel pings, not thuds. Thuds are dry rot and wet substrate. Try using it on new boats to get a feel for the response a good hull should have.
    Never buy a Merc that has been in the salt for any period of time...

    An excellent video. Thank you for posting. This is super helpful for a first time boat buyer. For someone with experience in auto mechanics and construction, doing your own due diligence seems possible. The main principals seem to be paying attention to details and systems for irregularities. So before buying, educated yourself about boat structures and systems, take your time and be observant during a DIY survey.

    The Most Comprehensive Boat Inspect Process I've ever seen.
    Those pesky spider web like stress cracks in The Gel Coat.
    Don't freak out, Gel Coat is extremely brittle.
    Most occur At or on the transom in Newer fiberglass boats.
    Older hulls in fiberglass will have them at the gunnels and deck too.
    Just remember; brittle brittle, brittle. And usually superficial.
    Today's Tip; before launching, "Put The Plug In".

      @johnpike5836 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Getting a Laugh; my dad was a millright at Alcan Aluminum for over 40 years. Naturally when the "Aluminum Boat" broke onto the market, he got one; The Springbok Model.
      16' with a 50hp merc.
      I grew out of that and got me a 17ft J-Craft but the newest one with a V hull, it was fiberglass. (our lake was a bit choppy)
      I slung a 175 merc on her and was pulling 76mph.
      After my second or 3rd outing, I was "Pumping Up The Gas pressure Ball and saw all these cracks on the transom (in the corners) I nearly had a heart attack and trailered her immediately.
      I rushed the boat back to the dealer and showed him the cracks....you could hear them laughing for 3 blocks....
      I nearly got killed 10 times in that boat!!
      Some of the happiest days of my life....

Look everywhere I can and sniff the engine oil. I can’t image walking up with a bag of tools to pull out plugs and compression test it haha. Suggestions on how to test a motor if it’s out of the water and at their house? Like if looking on letgo, Craigslist or eBay? Thanks.

    What would cause a fire on a boat? I noticed some boats at auction that BURN appears as a cause of damage to the boat but the boat does not appear to be burned, or be burned in a small place where the hull has a paint blister. Are these fires that may have occurred in a warehouse where boats were stored?

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All kinds of things, fuel leaks, engine trouble, wiring issues, grills, all kinds of stuff! But for the auction, if there's no visible damage to the hull, its probably something that happened to the engine or in the engine compartment.

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That should have a regular mercury power steering pump hooked up to a uflex steering cylinder on the engine? You should be able to take the lid off the steering pump and with the engine running just fill the steering pump until it is about an inch or a 1/2 inch from the top.

    • @esthersmith1412
      @esthersmith1412 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Born Again Boating thanks for the info but have done that and it is not working. This is why I think it may be the pump itself. I have filled it a couple times and tried bleeding it too but getting nothing motor doesn’t budge. I can push the motor by hand so it’s not locked up. Only thing I can think of is the pump. Was just wondering what you thought.

      Thank you! And great luck with the search! You'll find tons of information here with us, and once you get your boat and start going, if you want to fast track your learning curve and avoid some costly mistakes, we have a Boater's Program at BornAgainBoating.com that helps you learn the quick way. We've got a 3 Years Boating Experience in 30 Days challenge. Where you take courses everyday for about 30 minutes a day and it teaches you basically all the things you would learn after boating for 3 years, if not longer lol again wish you the best of luck on your search!
