    The EarthtonesGirl Podcast Present:
NO FEAR SOCK KNITTING CLASS ONLINE
Class 5: The Heel on Magic Loop
    NO FEAR SHORTY SOCK PATTERN:
    www.ravelry.co...
In Today’s class we are going cover the long awaited, much anticipated, very feared sock heel! But things are about to change. Today I’m going to teach you how to knit a perfect, hole-free heel flap and gusset. I’m beyond excited because I’m hoping this tutorial will give you the tools to overcome the fear and frustration that holds so many knitters back.
Every step in the process, heel flap, heel turn, and gusset will be covered slowly (I’m talking snail’s pace) and clearly to walk you through and get those heels knitted.
The pattern instructions are from my No Fear Shorty Sock Pattern. There is a link above.
As always if you have any questions, let me know but I do suggest watching the video, maybe more than once, practicing the steps, taking deep breaths and going slowly. You can do this!!!! Trust me!!
    Upcoming Classes:
Class 6: The Foot and Toe - March 7
    Class 7: Two At A Time - March 14
There will be bonus tutorial videos added along with way.

I watched many knitting videos over the past 15 years since I took up knitting.I have to brag on you because you are the very best knitting teacher I’ve ever watched. You explain steps so clearly which makes knitting these socks easy. I am a retired teacher and appreciate you so very much! 🩵🧶🩵

I’m working on my first sock EVER! Plus I’m a beginner knitter. I’m doing whatever you tell us to do . I’ll watch. Pause. Knit the part that you just explained and demonstrated. Then watch some more. Repeat. I’m now at the decreasing part where we’re supposed to have 44 stitches on each cable. I guess I followed you perfectly bc I too have 44 stitches on one side and 43 on the other. 😝Laughing my head off. But I’m feeling pretty proud right now to be doing this. I’m ACTUALLY DOING IT! Thanks so much. You’re a good teacher and you’re not afraid to let us know when you’ve goofed up. 😂Thanks again. ❤❤

Wow If only you knew how wonderful your vids are. As others have commented, it is like a friend at your house walking you through the process and explaining why it is done that way. As a native M.Looper, I was easily able to follow your 2 circs vid , shifting stitches on a loop coming natural and also the various nuances of how we hold our work, where the cable is to avoid gaps etc. So much info , love the tips , and that you give us more than 3-6 mins of your time. Video being done in a calm way allows us to feel relaxed as well ........ vs some who would just send us off saying , "you get the idea, just do the other side in reverse " :P Thank you

I cannot express how grateful I am for your "no fear sock knitting class", you got me out of my sock knitting funk. I tried knitting socks and got frustrated because I didn't understand the heel and gusset and took a break, or better yet gave up. I am now back at it and love it so much I knit on every break while I work and I understand the steps and cannot get enough! I am so happy! Thank you so much for making it so easy to understand and enjoyable to watch and for your trick for ladders and etc ! 😊

Thank you sooooooo much Denise, I was looking forward to seeing this video, because I am using the magic loop technique. I stopped last week before knitting the gusset, waiting for seeing how you distribute the stitches on magic loop. Now I am ready to go on after having watched your perfect instructions. I am a little bit worried about picking up the stitches, but I will do it slowly and carefully as you do and recommend it. I was used to work socks from the toe up, and now I am enjoying to work them from the cuff down and this thanks to your calm and accurate way to explain every step. Denise, your are the best sock teacher ever!!!! Next week I will be ready to continue with the foot. Hugs from Belgium.

Thank you again!! (And I’ll thank you after the next step, too, lol 😄) I can’t believe I went from zero (zero expectations, zero knowledge or forethought about sock construction, zero real knitting experience besides swatches) to turning a heel. Crazy what you can do with no fear! This really is like magic to me even though your tutorials are so clear and I’m doing the steps myself. It really motivates me to tackle other garments next, but I have a feeling I will come back to socks again and again or just have them as a constant side project-not only because it’s fun and there are so many construction options to learn and textures to add, but, oh my gosh, the variety amazing sock yarn! I so appreciate your passion and enthusiasm. :D Thanks again.

Hi Denise, I am a long-time sock knitter and progressed over time from DPNs to Magic Loop TAAT. With TAAT I have used German Short Rows or Afterthought Heel techniques; I could never figure out Heel Flap and Gussett (HF&G) for ML. Thank you so very much for the clear, detailed, tutorial on ML with HF&G. I have a question about the decrease section. Your example knits the first 10 sets , KTBL (knit through the back loop) at the intersection/hole, then you KTBL on the gusset, then knit to the end of the row. (Doing likewise on the second needle, only in reverse).
My question is: do you KTBL on the gusset area for every row? Or every decrease row? This looks like it would be so key to keeping it nice 'n tidy.

And when I do the math that should be right ? 64+20+2=86, divided by 2= 43. Correct?

I’ve knitted many heel flaps and gussets but never the way you taught. Hope I’m correct in my interpretation. Row 2 you slip the first st pwise and purl the row and knit the last st which is twisted. Row 3 you slip wyif and then bring the yarn to the back so you can knit the first stitch ( this wraps the yarn around the slipped stitch) I hope this is correct after watching the video until I knew every word. Thanks Denise for offering so many great patterns and tutorials. I’m starting the one more step pattern next. Is there a tutorial or do I just find the classes that apply?

In the decease round you were off a stitch on your red maker side and you said you would show us how to fix that and I was off one on each side. I think you forgot to show us but hopefully it won’t matter cause I am not sure how to add a stitch except to do yarn over which will make a hole maybe pick up between a stitch but not sure that will make a hole too. Well anyway so enjoying your videos. Thanks so much for making my first socks so much easier to understand.

I’ve enjoyed this series and love the pattern. It’s my go to for quick gift socks. I prefer magic loop vs. dbl points or 2 circs-which is just about the same as using 1 40” circ. 🙋🏾 Is there any advantage to flipping from flat-one “needle” for front and other for back-when knitting flap, and then reseating them to profile for gusset and then back again to flat for toe decreasing?
Thank you for all these videos, I find them soothing to listen to while working from home. It’s the Bajan accent. Very best. 🙏🏾👏🏾👋🏾

There is no advantage to rearranging the stitches and you can stay in the original position for the entire sock. I actually have a tutorial here on my channel demonstrating the technique.

Hi Denise. Love these videos but then I knew we'd be in good hands. I've been "practicing" on DK weight for winter socks to familiarise myself with the steps. Meanwhile, I've been stocking up on fingering weight sock yarn and I'm almost ready to go. I've been dipping in and out so far and already have picked up so many tips and tricks. I've just caked up some sock yarn, so ready for the deep dive soon. By the way, I don't remember if I said "thank you" for the gorgeous yarn and project bag I won last year as part of no fear Ravelry group. Oh, just purchased the pattern of course. X

Hi Carli, I don't think it will be a problem but you rearrange your stitches and begin again. You can also decrease the extra instep stitches once you return to knitting in the round.

      Hi Rebecca,
Don’t worry about being off by one stitch. As long as you have the same number of stitches on both sides and the difference is only in this case one stitch just proceed with the decreases and keep Knitting. There are times when I have been off by one stitch or even two stitches and I will increase or decrease accordingly and just keep Knitting. As long as you are getting, understanding, the technique and the method, right now the numbers are not the most critical thing.

Hi Denise, I have a question, while reading the pattern for the heel flap, I understand that rows 1 and 2 are set up rows, then rows 3 and 4. If I am doing the medium sock (64 stitches) for rows 3 and 4, am I knitting 14 times in total or 16 in total. I am getting confused if it is counting the initial row 3 and 4 in the 12(14, 16) more times.

      @stephaniebasire2998 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @3tangents
      @3tangents 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I had the same question, and your comment helped confirm for me that the pattern doesn't have a mistake and I'd definitely misunderstood somewhere. Then I found it. I had done the setup rows and rows 3&4 14 times, giving me 15, and couldn't for the life of me figure out where the 16th was supposed to come from. For anyone else who comes along wondering the same thing, the mistake I made was I forgot to count the original rows 3&4 in the pattern. I was thinking that the pattern said to do rows 3&4 14 times, but it says to repeat them *another* 14 times, on top of the original 3&4. So you do the setup rows 1&2, then rows 3&4 15 times, making 16 total.

I decided I was going to learn to do this correctly. I count to make sure I have 32 stitches before I begin. So I’m starting with the correct number of stitches I know. This is now the 5th time I’ve done the heel turn. Ending with a completed Right Side row and 21 stitches on my needle instead of 20. I don’t know how to figure out what I’m doing wrong. Perhaps I will put this down and do the heel turn that’s waiting for me with the other sock I’m doing on 2 needles. Sigh.

Now I have a question I hope you will address later on in the lessons. That is, how do you switch from two circs, to two at a time on Magic Loop OR switching from one sock on one Magic Loop to two socks at a time on one Magic Loop? Thank you for your messages and your emails. And I thank you also for purchasing a copy of my pattern. It’s a very busy time of the year and I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.
The pattern you purchased is the accompaniment pattern to my No Fear Sock Knitting Classes here on my channel.
If you follow along with the numbers and instructions in the pattern along with the more detailed instruction in the videos you will be well prepared to knit your socks.
If you would like to make full length Socks you can simply knit more rounds on the leg. That would be the only adjustment you have to make. I hope I’ve answered your questions. Good luck with your socks and if you have any other questions please let me know.
