I totally understand what he feels and how he feels about it I, too, was in Vietnam combat soldier with 101st airborne division the same time he was there everything he talked about is right on the money as far as keeping it in a box is experience I was there, too It all came out a little bit at a time before I realized I was suffering from post traumatic stress I’ve been to a lot of reunions where I reunited with my company those help me deal with a lot of my issues I see and I feel what he Experienced he might not admit it to himself, but I can see it in his eyes bless you man keep doing what you’re doing, but never turn your back on what you experienced it could all come crashing down 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🎖

I am 74yrs young now. A viet Nam vet with combat engineers. I was told I have ptsd. Watching your videos helps me greatly. I did not have the same experiences as most infantry. I was a lot safer than most of these videos u show. Just one battle can really impress the fest of your life. These videos give me peace. Thank you.

Following this man’s thought, it was never a walk-in the park. Please don’t forget about the Australian forces. They were just as well trained, but never acknowledged ( ever).
So many injustices, wether you lost 58,000 people or 523 people at the hands of communism. Everyone says God Bless America but what about Australians never to be seen, while still sacrificing their lives just the same. I can only say God Bless All of Those That Lost Their Lives , trying to keep Communism out of their country’s.

This fellow has expressed so much of how I look at reality. First, I’m not a veteran, age 70. As we are nearing the end of our life cycle, many have experienced extreme personal trauma which formed how we view purpose. We’ve considered checking out and made hard decisions. I identified with practically every conclusion he expressed. Raised fundamentalist I became atheist, not because of any hypocrisies of others, but in an effort to discover truth, based on evidence. He has come to conclusions for his actions and beliefs based on acceptance of realities.
He accepts his part in killing, for the fact that young people are forced into committing variable moral acts before learning basic truths, and it has guided his judgements in later life. “I’ve hired and fired a lot of young people…”.
I’m a landlord and had to accept that young tenets are still in an idealistic stage and have not yet understood societal responsibility, without including emotion. And I’ve learned to understand they are more willing to be adversarial rather than practical. I’ll go way beyond forcing my own sense of right and wrong just to avoid years of having or being a hostile neighbor. To manage people constructively, one has to balance all decisions while considering the desired outcome.
I’ve read the memoirs of Ulysses Grant and it taught me to always consider purpose of tactics on the greater strategy. He learned from his failures. Reading and hearing personal war experiences has taught me so much about civilian interactions.
I understand the words Marc used as he considered his responses to questions. I’m looking beyond his military experience. He has been able to categorize the horrors of war as his past and move on ahead. I think that has given him a healthier mentality. He understands that one cannot convey his own perspective to the inexperienced, who are in early stages of life. He chose his words very well. He has chosen to relegate his past into that compartment and doesn’t need to advertise it. “It’s all in a drawer”.
I’m still trying to do that. Thank You Marc. I’ve learned from you.

When brother Bartlett mentions we are all still there, it reminds me of what the late Colonel Hal Moore, Joe Galloway and all surviving members of the 1st Cavalry Division, 7th Cavalry, 1st and 2nd battalion referred to as we were soldiers once and young and we are soldiers still. The war never ends for many US combat veterans whether is it in World War 2, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq due to the psychological trauma and scars acquired from the dreaded battlefields. These wounds can heal overtime but the other folks out there should not treat the veterans with contempt and abuse but compassion and dignity for they have risked their lives so others can live. They fought not just for the nation but for their own fellow companions. Having said that I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to all members of the US armed forces for taking up the cross to serve and protect the lives and freedom of others.
I was a grunt in Vietnam 1971. Always enjoy listening to someone who knows what I esxperienced.

I agree with Marc that the combat experience can not be taught except by on the job training. A movie can't convey the combat experience. The danger, the smell, the feelings, the feeling of a mortar round or a hand grenade landing near by can not be experienced in a movie theater. If you can survive the first thirty seconds of combat you have probably learned enough to survive a year. But I can not tell you in words what you might have learned. That scene in the movie Platoon where Charlie Sheen wakes up when he was supposed to be on watch was with the enemy all around was one of my night mares when I was there. I was there October 1968 thru October 1969 in the central highlands.
I would love to hear a interview from a Viet cong or NVA veteran and get their perspective and experiences

I'd love to recommend you to my podcast where I interviewed Robin Bartlett on his time at War. This hero talked in great detail about his time on the field, leading his platoon, the injury he sustained, losing his fellow soldier etc... It was an episode for the books!
Anybody know anything about John Shanks (Timmy), serving 65 to 68,1st Cavalry, don't know unit, came back married but left and drifted to Texas and connected with vietnamese woman, he has passed now just want to know anything about him, he was a older relative.

98% of American troops stomped the jungle and paddies, looking for the enemy. The 1st of the 9th Recon Blue teams sat at their base waiting. Waiting for a hunter killer helicopter team to do the finding of the enemy. When the Blues scrambled for the slicks, the enemy was found already. And if still alive, the enemy was literally waiting as the Blues were dropped on top of that enemy! They saw more combat in one week, than most soldiers saw their entire year tour.
Interview a 1st of the 9th Air Cavalry Blues soldier ... Alpha, Bravo, or Charlie platoons. THERE is your best stories. Almost daily combat.
I wish he could have talked about how he earned his medals.

My stepfather was in Vietnam in 67. He said Houston is hotter. 99% humidity most days, and 105+ temperatures. The big "story" of the famous Vietnam heat came from American soldiers from cooler states, 😅.
I lived next to a Viet Nam vet in Va who worked in the Pentagon when 9/11 occurd. He managed to escape with out harm when the plane crashed into the pentagon. Not sure where he is but i hope if he sees this he will reach out to me. We lived in Woodbridge Va.
