  • 'The story of how air mobility is helping the First Air Cavalry, the "First Team," win the battle for freedom in Southeast Asia.'
The 1st Cavalry Division ("First Team") is a combined arms division and is one of the most decorated combat divisions of the United States Army. It is based at Fort Hood, Texas. It was formed in 1921 and served during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, with the Stabilization Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the Iraq War, in the War in Afghanistan and in Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
The unit is unique in that it has served as a Cavalry (horse) Division, an Infantry Division, an Air Assault Division and an Armored Division throughout its existence. In the Vietnam War, the First Cavalry Division suffered more casualties than any other army division: 5,444 men killed in action and 26,592 wounded in action.

I was in the 1st Cav. from May to July 1969. My unit was the 1/12 Cav. My one year tour of duty was cut short by a Viet Cong bullet to my heel.Last year I went to my first reunion in Las Vegas.I did not recognize anybody there but it was good seeing some of my old comrades.Lately there have been a lot of guys that were in my unit that have passed away as time goes on.

@@teamgaxiola No sorry,But if your friend served in the Cav.you can go to their website. Then you can narrow it down to Company size units and find out all about them. I was able to find out about my Company I served with in this way about five years ago and check the Battalion roster on who has since died, info about reunions, photos and stories.

My father was in the 1st Cav (2/12) in 66-67. He was drafted, didn't want to go, but didn't want to dodge either. He died fairly young at age 53 and he never talked to me about it much. I just heard about how they rode everywhere in Hueys (he enjoyed that part). He carried the M-79 his first couple months in country. He told me he rarely saw the enemy as they were always dug in deep in the jungle. VC would engage you, and all you could do was hit the deck and fire back into the bush. Several guys in his platoon were KIA, including his Lieutenant.

Combat vet with the Rangers and 82nd Airborne. Every time I see a Trooper with a 1st Air Cav combat patch makes my gut crunch a bit and my respect flow out to them.

I'm a Rakkasan from a different era (Iraq '03), but our honorary 1SG was a member of both 11th Air Assault Division (Test) and 1st Cav. He told us about getting some extra physical training one day when the company reported with 11th Division patches only for the 1SG to inform them they were out of uniform since they'd been reflagged to 1st Cav overnight.

I was a CH47 CE with 1ACB 1CD from May 2005-July 2010 at Fort Hood Texas & Taji, Iraq. Before B 2/227, we were A 2/52 at Camp Humphreys, South Korea. The Unit PCS's as a whole to fall under 1CD when the Army restructured the Aviation branch into GSAB's.
