I remember as an 8 year old, going to the airport to pick up my dad arriving home from the war , people called my mother ugly name's,as we waited,I was so happy to see my Dad ,as we were leaving, people spitting, throwing things at us ,I was scared and started to cry ,my dad grabbed my hand looking in my eyes and told me always remember,love your country,and fear your government,take care of yourself and your family and forget about people like this that do not know any better,this scene was repeated picking up my uncle's as well, just look what's happening to our country now ,the government is tearing us down,so I remember what my dad told me that day,and just keep moving forward,I lost him 2 years ago ,thank all of our veterans for their service,and sacrifice,

My old man was drafted right out of high school and did 2 tours. He and his pals are American heros. RIP Old Man, and all your pals , the ones that came to our house for Monday night football as i was growing up. The one who was our neighbor and went to our Church and i started working with him in the summers off from school from age 10 on . I grew up with them all, and they taught me everything from firearms, hunting , and work ethics. Most of them are gone as they were there mostly in the late 1960's. They are still American heros to me , no matter what anyone says about Veterans of foreign wars . They are the real elites and the 1% of America.
As a black man it saddens me how America treated our vets of the Vietnam war Bc in the military we aren’t black or white neither are you any other ethnicity one you join the us military. One you’re in the USA military you bleed green like your fellow comrades. Every american that is a patriot isn’t any ethnic background every patriot bleeds and pisses “ red,white and blue” and all these colors leave our patriotic bodies on the pattern of the AMERICAN FLAG!!!

I feel sorry for that man who tried to pick up
his mate and found the back of his head had gone. A great tragedy. I am an Australian who lost his brother in Phuoc Thuy Province in April 1971,he was K.I.A shot in a burst of fire and was shot in the throat and the head. He passed away as he was put on the Huey. He was attached to the American Special Forces, he was SAS Australian Task Force. He made many American friends and wrote and told me what a fantastic bunch of USA guys they were. Her enjoyed talking with the Americans and made many friends. They talked about the USA and Australia. It was his American brothers that placed him, aboard the Huey, just as he passed away. Thank you guys whoever you may be. I will never know who you were, but I thank you anyway. He was 5 days of turning 23. A fantastic guy and a wonderful brother. He missed out on the call up but volunteered his services for his country, Well done to all the Vietnam Vets, those who passed away since the war, those who died during the war and those who are still suffering after the war I respect you all and salute you!!
There are still many Vietnam combat veterans alive today. Blessings to all of you...all of veterans who served that time. Appreciation is the heart of all persons whose gratitude continues to love you back home FOREVER ❤
I was a product of the war. My mother was Vietnamese and my biological father was a soldier. I was put up for adoption . In April of 1975 I headed to South Carolina to live with an American family. I took on an American name versus my Vietnamese birth name. At age 2 and 1/2 I was potty trained, could dress and feed myself. I was also fluent in Vietnamese, French, and English.
Still looking for my Vietnamese birth mother Phan Thi Dieu Hoa. My name was Phan Thi Bich Van.
I do not believe in man’s war.

I found a few people with that name. One is in France (you mentioned speaking French) one in Ho Chi Minh but they seem a little young and I'm guessing your mom is around 70? A lawyer and a teacher. Was your father a Vietnamese soldier? I see your name is a little different then your moms. Do you have your adoption records? There may be something in there to lead somewhere.

My father was an American soldier. A French family took care of me prior to my adoption. All my paperwork is in Vietnamese. Not much information on my birth mother. Not even sure is she is still living.

There were many Vietnam songs back then that I just loved by CCR, all of these songs bring back many memories, I still listen to them every now and then. I was 17 years old when I got to Vietnam-1966 through 1969 (My mom had to sign a waiver for me), I grew up fast and learned a lot, good and bad. (I am now 73 and still learning). I was stationed on the USS Providence and also stationed in Country at a place called "Monkey Mountain" close to DaNang, by the DMZ. I spent 3 tours of duty in and around Vietnam. 3 of my high school friends were killed in Vietnam, I was spared. I participated in the TET Offensive in Feb 1968, that was bad. Somewhere along the way I was exposed to Agent Orange (Nasty Stuff) I am now on disability for the effects of agent orange. When I was discharged and came home to the States we arrived in San Francisco, and there were a lot of protesters spitting on us and throwing rocks and eggs and called us baby killers. That was our welcome home. I tell you this to say to you, that whatever your position is or was on the Vietnam war, it was not the veteran who got us into the war, most of us went because we were patriots and loved our country. Blame the politicians, yes, but not the veteran. To all Vietnam Vets out there, you are not forgotten. As a previous combat Vet myself, I salute you my friend.
They may be not forgotten by their families but the u.s. government is glad to forget about them; why? If it was uncovered that there are still vets hid out in jungle camps in Vietnam, the families would know the "government" really didn't do everything to bring them all home. I know this as a fact as the VFW magazine from 1991 had an article of vietnamese who reported when they came to the states that they knew of these camps. Plus the prisoners made "SOS" signs which could be seen from satelite images above. The u.s. govnmt "dragged their feet" to investigate (because of what I stated earlier) that when they finally got around to checking out the area, they had moved and tried to cover their tracks. So the u.s. said because they were no longer there, the report was "unsubstantiated." Made me mad as hell!

Sorry....I don't buy your line of BS about "don't blame the veteran". I'm a proud Vietnam/Draft resistor. Veterans cop out when they say it's all the politicians and Government's fault. There is NO war when soldiers don't show up. And none of this bullsh*t about patriotism and loving your country. They should have figured out like I did that Vietnam was no good...for them personally or their country. They were chumps and pawns. That has nothing to do with patriotism, courage or lack of it. or loving your country. Vietnam did nothing but hurt the USA in many different ways for at least 10 years...and more. Patriots don't help "F" their own country.
Btw....I never abused Vietnam veterans in any way. Nor did I see them as "baby killers". Nor did I support GI Jane Fonda. However, today I have no problem jumping on the asses of these Vietnam veterans and their big mouths about courage, cowardice, patriotism, duty etc when it comes to those who were wise enough to not go to Vietnam.

They did not serve their country. All these Vietnam videos are basically BS. These veterans willingly chose to go to an unwinnable, illegal war. If they say otherwise they are promoting a falsehood. A lot of these people push the image that they could or did win the war, but the "politicians" and the "people back home" lost it. Vietnam was a national American disgrace, tragedy and defeat...and they share in the responsibility of it. The politicians and American people saw that the war was not being won, or was unwinnable. The US never really had the "hearts and minds" of the South Vietnamese people...who they supposedly were fighting for. They don't talk much about the war crimes they committed against the Vietnamese....OR even against their own personnel. Lastly, whether these guys won or lost...the Vietnam war had absolutely NO effect on American freedom, security, safety or way of life. They did NOT sacrifice anything for my...or your freedom. These veterans present themselves as victims and wrongly treated. They are big boys and went to a country to kill or be killed. They shared in the failure. Now they want to be recognized for their "sacrifice" through videos, Honor Flights, endless trips to the Wall in DC or to Vietnam itself. They never grew up and really moved on. They have made themselves an embarrassment to themselves and my generation.
I served 8 years and when someone talks bad about military members, I dont even sweat it. We're the reason they're able to voice their uninformed opinions without fear of reprisal. Soldiers have secured and maintained that 1st amendment right for them.

I think most military guys are great. But the ones who start talking about war crimes different story.
My respect has ended for those serving now, they only protect criminals, they certainly are not defending the constitution, this is not a humble military, this is a proud and arrogant military, basically they follow orders from a tyrant to suppress our rights, this military would turn on the people in a minute.

My pops was a semi bad kid growing up, was on probation till he was 21. He was married, I was almost 2yrs old and he gainfully employed. Was drafted as soon as probation was done. Started his tour July 1966 and spent 16 months with 4inf. He died in 95 from cancer, I noticed that he didn't have a flag on his coffin at that moment. I asked my mom, her words stuck with me. She said fuck that flag. They spit on him when he got off the plane, the VFW didn't want Vietnam vets and the population thought they were all dope head baby killers. So she didnt care if it was on his casket or not. I know he left his foot locker with his uniform, bronze star, purple heart in a shed at house we lived at the time

Many times those "troubled kids" became dam good fighting men. The kind everyone wanted beside them. And if your Dad extended his tour I think he was doing more than one man was expected to do. Be proud. Be very proud. He was and Is a Hero.

D. Anderson, USMC, Hotel Company, 2dBn, 9th Marines, 3d MarDiv, 2/9/3, 68-69 Operation Dewey Canyon. In memory of 58,281 men including 8 women, all nurses, 16 clergy members and 160 Medal of Honor recipients who served in the Vietnam War and later died as a result of their service. We honor and remember their sacrifice.
Many carry a sense of having been betrayed by civilian and military leaders and by society generally. Be-trayed by politicians who resorted to war under false pretenses and took advantage of their patriotism and youth (the average age of a soldier in Vietnam was 19) and who placed constraints on war strategy that set them up for failure.
It's easy to forget that those who served in Vietnam grew up in a time when politicians were seen as statesmen focused on the common good. Most trusted their leaders when told that war was necessary to stop the spread of communism. Despite stereotypes to the contrary, most volunteered. They were part of a generation raised with stories about how their fathers and uncles had accepted the duties of citizenship and won the Great War.
These soldiers realized quickly that their fathers war was very different than the one into which they had been led. Their fathers had typically fought as parts of large coordinated forces against a massed enemy, taking and holding territory and attaining measurable strategic objectives, each of which moved them closer to victory. This was not true in Vietnam. Due to geopolitical constraints there would be no invasion of North Vietnam. Rarely would they face a massed force fighting in conventional fashion. In Vietnam, the enemy was often invisible, attacking then slipping away. Though the Army of North Vietnam was a conventional guerilla force, the Viet Cong were often indistinguishable from civilians.
A rotational system of deployment that constantly shuffled around the membership of units and which some believed undermined unit cohesion and morale, negative media stereotypes of American soldiers, exposure to conditions of intense privation, chronic feeling of being under threat with no safe place to go, and faulty equipment that broke down under fire. Others were stung by leadership claims that the war was necessary to liberate the people of South Vietnam only to find, as one veteran put it, "Those people just wanted us out and some wanted to cut my throat." I've known many who continued to resent what they saw as lies told by military and civilian leaders claiming progress was being made when the experience on the ground suggested they were stuck in a quagmire.
Then there was the betrayal of the homecoming. Though the antiwar movement had broad roots composed of people who genuinely wanted to stop the war, there was a segment openly hostile not just to the war but to the troops who fought it. Returning veterans who had given everything they had and who simply wanted to return home were often met with hostility.
Vets often say things such as, "We were spat on, called baby killers, treated like dirt when we arrived back home." Others remember subtle hostility: "I was afraid to wear my uniform in public because of the looks I'd get." Many contrast their experience with an earlier generation. "Those World War 2 guys got parades and ticker tape; we got stabbed in the back."

Politicians messed over the military with Afghanistan also.
They didn't fight the war to win. It was ridiculous. WWII would have dragged on for many more years if we had fought it in the manner in which they did Vietnam. Lost an uncle there during TET near Denang in 68.
Spent a lifetime on medicine for nerve gas off and on.. 1967 to 2022. We started with radar type blood analysis 1968,, with my father a consulting chemical engineer and military medical doctors., as we discovered cracked neutron from tremendous heat and pressure from nerve gas. Thr final medical treatment was chelated vitamin c with atom replacement in oral and Intravenous form.

I knew a guy who a full bird col. and served in WW2 , Korea and Vietnam
And used to tell me the American of the Vietnam War were the hardest fighting men he ever knew, they would listen to radios all the time and when someone called for help from being over ran by the VC ,he never had to ask for volunteers, they would be waiting ready to go ,
not trying to take anything away from any our solders

My husband was a Marine & I was in Navy..we were stationed in Millington , Tennessee..He trained at Camp Lejeune then sent to Vietnam I remained stationed in Millington..every week-end some of us would go to Bethesda, Maryland to hospital there to visit our soldiers 😢! My heart was so darn broken but we continued going..at this time my husband was in Vietnam, I worked in Chaplains office& when I say was horrible to hear the stories from returning soldiers I wanted to walk out, go AWOL NEVER had I heard & seen such atrocities! My husband came back un- harmed, physically but gone mentally! 😪 GOD BLESS YOU GUYS & GALS( NURSES) WHO RISKED YOUR LIVES FOR A NOTHING WAR!! WITH MUCH RESPECT & LOVE I SALUTE YOU ALL!.

I went through Millington in 69 as a Marine , there I learned that some of my fellow Marines I had gone through boot camp had died . Sad and familiar memories are stirred by this comments and stories .

Had the opportunity to meet a Vietnam Vet! Ended up loving him, no matter what and plan to embrace his experience with understanding and will be his friend to the end, as long as he needs my friendship.

But again, that was Korean business. So yeh they achieved a stalemate and saved Korea from being a united country under communism. Now it’s split in two….ok sure. Vietnam? Zero was achieved. Minus zero. The USA thought that North Vietnam would have Vietnam as a communist country, and then will threaten the USA ( 😂 😂) like how was or is Vietnam ever a threat to the USA ffs. And they said once Vietnam is communist, they will conquer all of south east Asia and make it all communism. Okayyyyy. Well north Vietnam won. They united the country, as that’s all they wanted. The same thing happened to Australian vets. Had to disembark at night and the old WWII soldiers told us that wasn't a war. Couldn't grow our hair quick enough.

Cant believe the old ww2 vets could say a think the Vietnam was won by America and allies anyways. We installed a pro American government and we won in the war of attrition. We lost politically at home though. Afghanistan was a way worse blunder Bc we didn’t keep a strong pro democracy gov in place like Vietnam

I went to basic training at Fort Knox in 1979 and all my drill and 1st Sargents were Vietnam veterans and they were tough on us
1st Sargent gave me a uppercut to the stomach for falling asleep it was a strange time in the service, I was very young and a much older black guy from DC tried to extort money from me , I was punched in the face twice while I slept from a fellow enlisted man

I remember CBS said the war was over as if we lost the war. We never lost a battle. To this day I never watch CBS
I saw the war in Viet Nam on Television it scared me to the core I got drafted too was praying I don't want to go to VN send me to Hawaii
I’m a police officer in a very rough area near the south side of Chicago I was trained by servers Vietnam Vets when I first got on the job many years ago. They were by far the best Officers I ever worked with!!!! I have nothing but total respect for Vietnam veterans and I am ashamed that that police officer acted like that I am glad that that that said some to the hospital that police officer is a disgrace and embarrassment to all of us The Vietnam vet were the best men this country has to offer and should be shown nothing but respect!!!! we Cops are starting to feel their pain as we are hated by many people today. Maybe most people.
I grew up in a small town in Texas back in the 70,s and the cops used to poor our beer out and take our weed and tell us get our ass home
They even give is rides and call our parents to get us

It took 25 years after the Australian Forces went to Vietnam to get a welcome home parade & a thank you for your service. Here is a touching song from an Aussie Group in 1983 = "I was only 19" = thank you to all the vets, their spouses, kids & the nurses / doctors who took care of them after the war was ended - but never over for them :(
Australian forces ran the tightest sector in the country. The SAS stories I've heard are legendary.
When I was in the Reserves we had a few old Vietnam vets with us. Was great to listen to them to gain their knowledge.

Man, what a truthful assessment of the civilian attitude toward returning veterans. I was thinking something similar yesterday: coming home from the war, nobody gave a hoot. Settling down and raising a family... nobody gave a hoot. Building a career... nobody gave a hoot. Retiring, getting old... nobody gave a hoot. So I guess the only thing left to do is to get a pet owl.
SP6 Cauchi is my grandfather. He shot a lot of this footage along with other members of the 221st Signal Co. He earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star with V device on that hill. I’m glad to see that this footage still exists. We used to have 8mm reels that I watched with my grandfather as a kid. I still have the audio recordings from this battle with the exact moment an enemy mortar round landed, wounding my grandpa and killing a platoon leader. I am an Iraq War Veteran, but this footage and the audio that I have of the battle sends chills up my spine. It’s unbelievable how brave these men were. If there are any members of the 221st Signal Company that served with my late grandfather SP6 Maurice Cauchi that are still around, I would be honored to talk to you.
My mom use to come to tears all the time about a man named Benny she once knew. They lived together in a small knit community in New Mexico. Apparently one day, Benny god bless him.. stepped on a land mind in Vietnam. Makes me sad to think about but my parents came from that generation, who had friends that left to fight.
When I was in California wearing my MARINE CORPS uniform I got spit on. This was mid 70s. A guy can forgive but one never forgets. Great program gentlemen THANKS you. GOD BLESS

Yes they did and that was BS. These veterans deserved better than that. When I see a Vietnam veteran I walk up and shake his hand and thank him for his serve.
Yes, and the men who are of the age to have served still do. Jealousy? Hate? Feelings of inadequacy? DAMNFINO but I do not mind a tiny bit saying that I can never bring myself to trust Americans. USMC 1962-;1968. RVN 66-67. Unique position of being sent in with/in charge of my teams when things were intense. Lived out of a Willie Peter Bag for months at a time. 11 units that I was with were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (Marine criteria: If awarded in a personal basis equivalent to Navy Cross). Two times directly on DMZ, 7 months in Leather neck Square. Quang Tri Province had more American casualties than any province in Nam.
USA is a fickle bunch of foolish cowards. If you were not there in Nam, shut your mouth!

Half my block in DaBronx were drafted or enlisted. Some came back , some I never saw again.
A white privilege college deferment along with a high number kept me home.
Yes, I protested on campus & in DC, but I always preached " hate the war ,not the warrior " I can't even describe how much love & respect I have for these vets. This was my generation, these were my friends & family. Thier acts of courage is just unbelievable.

My Stepdad was a machine gunner in1969 1st Calvary Division Airmobile, 101st Airborne Division. Right out of highschool- so young to have to go through this!~ He jumped out of airplanes with a machine gun. He had the same gun as Rambo had in the movie. So many stories that he told me- he could have written a book. His commander was supposed to go home and the day before he was standing next to him and his head was blown off and landed between my step dads feet. He laid in the rivers with his buddies’ dead bodies next to him and he had to pretend that he was dead. Scorpians and snakes crawled over his face. He couldnt even blink. He was doing this for almost 2 years. couldn’t imagine doing this for one hour let alone 2 straight years of terror. Thank you all for your service and sacrifices.
It was an M60 machine gun a very good weather I do not remember figures every third round or 6th round that when it come out of the barrel it tumbled made a hell of a hole
I almost chuckled when I realized he beat the hell out of that punk ass cop. I don't condone it but understand why. I hope it set that officer straight or he decided to leave the force. No one that disrespectful needs to be a police officer.

I went to Nam at 18 years old. I was with 25th infantry Intelligence Detachment. I didn't fight even though fighting was very near. I felt sorry for the men that did the actual fighting. Much respect for them. I never saw a protesters when I came home.

All these guys are true heroes. My father was in Vietnam but sometimes its hard for me to have the same feeling about him. Mostly because of he wasn't part of my life. It's part of a bigger understanding I guess

@@benedicthampus4964 that's awesome, and yeah apparently there's still cluster rounds scattered all over Vietnam and Laos too, farmers especially die and lose limbs all the time from them, kids also pick them up not knowing what they are
I probably watched all of Vietnam War videos (Doc) on YT. It appear that not many of those videos are still on this platform. I am a transplant from Southeast Asia due to these wars.

Growing up in a military family. I have always respected our veterans from past, present, and future. I enjoyed listening to their experiences in the service. Because they need to tell their story. What did they go through in combat. Seeing their brothers dying around them. Then, coming to be disrespected by cowardly Americana. My grandfather got wounded a few times in Vietnam.
My Great Uncle served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969. He served in the 2d Transportation Company. He was a truck driver, the most dangerous job in the war. He was a decorated soldier that was and still is to this day proud of his service. He is not ashamed of anything he has done. He did not think the war was a good idea, but he did not let it affect him, he said simply "I might as well have just done my job."
Why was being a truck driver such a dangerous job?
@@robertisham5279 It was highly dangerous because truck companies kept units supplied, and if the Vietnamese could destroy those supplies, they could stop our soldiers from coordinating attacks, and make them weak and vulnerable. He was specifically a fuel truck driver. The Vietnamese knew that their main problems were helicopters. They also knew that if they could destroy the fuel that powers the helicopters, they would create a fuel shortage to cripple the helicopters and their logistics. Basically without supplies, the infantry and cavalry and all that jazz can’t function without transport companies.
the same thing happened to alot of our service men here in Australia who went to Vietnam

I'm am now 45 taking care of my dad who is 75 ate up with Parkinson the VA even said from the harmless Agent Orange and to watch him wither away and lay there and cry and ask me why am I this way? Why can't I stop shaking? This is fucking miserable being this way as I help him pee or poop and have to wipe him and change him kills me and yet still to this day it seems no one cares about him or all these other brave young soldiers who did their best just to survive and make it home alive and most still never fully returned home I will never understand how people could disrespect them that way even their own government who sent them there

Vietnam was a tragic time for American and Vietnamese people making corporate America rich.
Remember, Cambodia was sucked into this war too. And the Cambodian government still owed Uncle War from this era. B-52s carpet bomb Cambodia due to Viet Cong sanctuaries inside Cambodian border.

I was always proud of OUR Veterans, always. I know it was never enough to say 'Thank You for Your Service', but it was all I could say - I could never relate or understand what they endured. BUT, Thank You for Your Service. Be Safe and Stay Strong. You are Truly Respected and Loved.

It breaks my heart and moves me to tears the treatment you had to endure coming home. You all deserve the best for doing what you where asked by your country at such a young age. You where all wonderful young men and deserved so much better like a time to debrief and mostly respect for a job you never wanted for but you did because your government said they needed you too. Well gentlemen, you certainly have my respect and gratitude!
I earned the vietnam service medal 3 times yet never once had to go in country or even fly over vietnam so I thank all those vietnam veterans who served in country for me.

To the guy that was on the mortor platoon in Ia Drang Battle, Coy Carter was also on that mortar platoon and he just died, we used to go to the VA together about 10 years ago. He lived in Justin Texas. He told me the story about Ia Drang Battle, he said if it weren't for the air support and their artillery they would have been overrun so many times he said they were almost out of ammo and it was three nights and two days or two days and three nights I don't remember but it was a long time! The movie made it to fake where they had one big charge and it wasn't like that they were pinned down for 3 days and outnumbered five to one at least and the enemy was on The High Ground NVA had every advantage except for air support!
This film brought back so many memories. I knew so many guys who were in Nam as that was my age group. Some didn't make it back but I was close to some who did and they talked about it with me because we had been friends before Nam. What was hardest for many of them was leaving their guys behind and the the lack of support back stateside. One man I know well, did two tours. He said he didn't like leaving men in his platoon behind. It was a long, cruel and pointless political was. This film brought it all back for man of us.
