Wow, I had no idea "Big Shot" was inspired by a night out with Mick and Bianca Jagger! It's fascinating how Billy Joel can take real-life experiences and turn them into such iconic songs. His storytelling through music is truly unparalleled.
No question that Scenes From an Italian Restaurant is my absolute favorite Joel song. It made me a Joel fan for life, and I saw him in concert as the album was breaking, not quite huge yet, in the medium sized Houston Music Hall. Only a few months later he came back and sold out the Sam Houston Coliseum. The piano solo on that is just other-worldly.
@@FactsVerse It was Bianca that he had to deal with. She was known to scream at government workers who were just doing their jobs, acting like rules are for little people.
I loved Only The Good Die Young. My ex husband and I had friends who would ask them to join them after work to go to their after work hang out. They talked about a guy who played piano and was really a good singer that wouldn't be playing in a little place like this bar for long. The place was The Executive Room and he is Billy Joel. I drunkenly (but politely) put a tip in the jar. Think I said something like I really enjoy your stuff😅
I love Billy! I saw him three times. He buys the first three rows of his shows and gives them to his real fans! He doesn’t want the rich people who don’t like him that much anyway.
Funny because I remember reading in Rolling Stone in the early 1980s that Joel said he wrote the song about himself. Back then he said he got really drunk and obnoxious at a party and afterwards felt horrible about it so he wrote the song.
My actual favorite is the criminally underrated "Matter of Trust" - there may be, probably are, more artistically interesting Joel songs (Allentown, my 2nd favorite, is one) but favorite doesn't always mean best.
I may be alone in this, but I've always felt that Italian Restaurant doesn't really work; that the Brenda and Eddie section really should have been a standalone song, and replaced with a few smaller vignettes. (Yeah, right, like Billy Joel needs to take songwriting advice from me). As it is, it's missing the drift in conversation that you'd naturally get with two old friends catching up, and perhaps more importantly, is implied in the song's title. Vignettes would have also allowed more of the song's main strength, which is the musical shifting from section to section. Instead, it's unbalanced, being almost completely about Brenda and Eddie, and we never learn much about the supposed main characters who are talking. We don't even learn much about whatever became of Brenda and Eddie, which is what old classmates would have been asking, rather than regurgitating their high school back story, which both of them would already be fully familiar with. If the point of the song is to tell a story, then I want the story to make sense. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good song. It's more like when there's a movie you like that has some big plot holes, which you find irritating because they would have been easy to fix.
Most of the content is a rehash of the basic content of each song. If we weren't already very familiar with the song, we wouldn't care about its inspiration.
Only the good die young, Great song, but how I hated it when it came out. High School, Catholic Gir,l Named Virginia, everyone would sing or quote that song to me.

I read about Good Die Young where before a Philly concert he received a death threat if he played it. He played it twice - f the hater.

I'd really love to hear the story behind Captain Jack - one of my favorite Billy Joel songs. I kind of makes me think about Catcher in the Rye.
Funny because I remember reading in Rolling Stone in the early 1980s that Joel said he wrote the song about himself. Back then he said he got really drunk and obnoxious at a party and afterwards felt horrible about it so he wrote the song.

Moving Out (Anthony's Song)

@seanscanlon9067 Yes, I was just tired lol. I saw the interview he did regarding the song. Thanks.

According to Billy, you can't have a simple drink at a bar, buying a home in Hackensack, or self pleasuring.
