Grazie . LOVE YOU

    I loooove all of your phals and this video to help with flower spikes! Of course every environment is different like with my phals I learned that as long as I give them the most amount of light they will make multiple spikes with many flowers because here in western Canada it’s hard to grow anything! LOVE your channel!!! Also strangely enough all of my 5 phals bloom in the summer! But they are definitely not supposed to be summer bloomers! Sun makes a huge difference 😁🤔

    Hi Danny. My favorite phal which doesn't have the prettiest blooms or roots but is my most robust and most reliable and has the prettiest leaves. Being reliable so don't need ice (hehe) and with sunlight and decent fertilizing and is in spike again. Think this guy has a time clock and boom, flowers. You can see why she's my favorite, constantly giving me flowers without much fuss.
    2 and counting !!!

    Here in the Philippines, native phals like schilleriana, stuartiana, aphrodite, sanderiana, and so on, typically produce flower spikes ranging from December to February, depending on your elevation. Phals, in higher elevations, produce spikes more early compared to low-land areas. I think this is because of the temperature imo

    A drop in the temperature made my orchids produce spikes. My orchids sit on windowsills and there the temperatures at night naturally dropped to +16 C. 2 weeks of cooler nights and voila! my Phals want to rebloom. These orchids were bought in bloom 6 months ago. I live in Maryland.

    Hi Dani
    I have watched your videos for a long time, and have learned so much! THANK YOU, The reason it’s taken so long for me to subscribe is because I live in the U.K . The way you get the information across about the orchid you are taking about, it only matter when you talk about temperature, the bell 🔔 is on, my order arrive from China, among the seedlings l ordered is a Paphiopedilum Bellina the other are Dendrobium All are very poor with little chance of survival, to the point I cannot tell the Phal the one I think it is has 4 pale green leaves with rot on the edge, the leaf is flat with I tiny pointed bit in the middle on the outer side of the leaf, the orchid has no roots, I have given it the universal orchid First Aid , Put in moss in a pot inside a plastic cup, have checked out all the photos on the web, but cannot identity the leaf, I know it’s not much to go on, any idea? and can help with the Phal?
    Cheers K

    Super informative. You have an amazing collection! I can confirm that photoperiod doesn't induce spike in phals (at least not in the dozen I have). I grow my orchids under HID lighting in a grow tent alongside cannabis which I "veg" under 18hr days for a month or so before inducing flowering by shortening days down to 12hr. This "flip" has never induced spikes.

    Far infrared also influences flowering... not so much day length but also night length as well. There was an interesting class on Coursera called ~ Understanding Plants - Part I: What a Plant Knows and it discussed the impact of the different light spectrums. Thought you might enjoy that class, to be honest. No daylight savings here either...

    I’m in the south of England and 6 of my phals have been growing stems since the beginning of sept. Surprisingly my living room ones started before the kitchen ones. The kitchen is cooler than the living room but that’s all year round but the living room windows are open for more hours than the kitchen so temp must be the reason for it. My orchids are all kept in water culture and watered with rain water from the water butt in our garden. I’ve noticed it takes about a year for an orchid to acclimatise to your house as my new orchids will often not spike until the next season or they will do secondary spikes rather than new ones

    Hi Danny. Great video. I agree with you. The Philippines has a day length similar to Indonesia and my Phals happen to spike a month or two ago (they are in bloom now) and this was mainly due to the cooler temperatures when the country got visited by typhoons.
    Now, off topic, I see you have your Phals all on one shelf. May I make a request that once they are in bloom, could you please make a video of them as a group by panning the camera or just making a full shoot of your grow space. It would be so lovely to see them in an array on your shelving.
    Many thanks. 😊

    Have you seen Aphrodite there!? JK, I got my info from a Wikitravel page. I don't expect you to have met her, being that Cyprus is the 3rd largest Island & populous (interesting stuff)! lol
    What promoted your country move? I have only ever lived in the US, but at different times I was in the W, SW, NW, and SE corners. I would like to see Asia, Egypt, Europe, Mexico, Canada, umm, everyplace!
    I enjoyed this video. I currently live in the SW Desert and always wonder about what happens to plants because of our (seemingly endless) summers.
    I received a Phal as a house-warming gift and it suffered (followed the "ice cube method" instructions on the card) but bounced back thanks to my platuition -haha. Also because of your videos!
    I've watched my Phal grow 1 new root after a major loss from rot,. Then I witnessed 1 new leaf as ir grew and nursed 2 Keikis (!), grow 2 more leaves, and now I think I see many new roots, but maybe they're actually spikes, facing the soil?
    Anyway, off to watch more of your helpful videos! Thanks again!

    Hi Danni,
    I bought a phal about 8 months ago and it didn't look like it had ever had any flower spikes. It's been sitting by a window in the kitchen since but it hasn't had any new growth ( no roots, leaves or flower spikes). She seems to be happy, leaves are strong and glossy and about 20cm long. Is it usual for a phal to look the same for 8 month. I live in Melbourne Australia.. I love your videos they're very informative and helpful. Keep up the great work 👏🏻

    Phal. questions: For how many months do your Violacea and Bellina continue to bloom? What are the temperature marks which trigger them to stop/start blooming? Do the leaves grow while they're blooming?

  • @Plantsandtoyhorses

    I have a phal with no lower roots, only arial roots. Its a rescue from an office about two months ago, and when I got it the pine bark media was old and moldy, broken down, and all lower roots had pretty much rotted and died. Its leaves were fine and its now even growing a new root. I cut off the dead roots, and sprayed with hydrogen peroxide, but when I put it in a self-watering wick in LECA the humid environment seems to make the mold grow on the stem and root stumps again. I know the mold is there because it was probably in moldy media for some time before I got it. Whenever I have it out of LECA I do spray again with hydrogen peroxide, but it seems to be the only way to prevent the mold from growing again is to keep it in the open air. I know the room she's in has been quite humid all summer so that probably contributes. Anyone have thoughts on how to permanently kill the mold so I can put her back in LECA?

    • @bubbler891
      @bubbler891 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ilkhan28 could you maybe keep her as an air plant for a few months? Spray the plant upside down each day so all wounds heal and dry properly then after you’ve seen some growth try again? Most of my phals are reduced price rescues and have all suffered a lot of root rot so I keep mine as semi water culture the dry days seem to really help

    • @Plantsandtoyhorses
      @Plantsandtoyhorses 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heya bubbler, thanks for the tips. Since posting this, I have been keeping it in semi-water culture, but Im having to put some arial roots in the water because it has no lower roots. I am occasionally taking it out to treat the stem gently brushing it with hydrogen peroxide and letting it dry. But the lower stem has pretty much become very woody-like so I don't think any new roots will grow from there. However the rest of the plant is doing just fine. Her leaves are stiff, and its even growing a new arial root.

    • @bubbler891
      @bubbler891 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like your doing a great job already 👍🏻 if the stem is dry and woody you can trim it down but make sure it’s fully dried before putting back into water

    Hello, I'm new to caring for Phalaenopsis orchids. I had first orchid from last summer bloom again. This was after I read up on how to water and care for them. I recently got a yellow orchid. I call her my summer sunshine orchid. I looked at her spike today and it seems to have some strange spots. They look like drying or scabs, the orchid is still blooming. I had bought this orchid from wegmans and I put this one on the same watering routine as my fall color orchid. I just want to make sure this orchid is ok. I noticed a new spike is growing near the current spike. I can send you pictures of what the spike looks like. I just want to get some help.

    Any tips to lower temperatures around the plant without making the whole place freezing?
    I could leave a window open but even 20 degrees inside feels too cold for me... Temperatures drop around 19-20 by night inside but not less, between 21 and 23 during the day at the moment...
    My sweet memory gave me so many roots and it's growing a second new lief which is about 1/3 of its definitive size...
    I guess once this lief will be done I'll have some hope to see a spike appearing 🙏

    Hi Dani! I just wanted to see what you thought about phals spiking in an even colder climate. I live in North-East Scotland, the highest avg. temp here during summer is 18C and the day length is roughly 18hrs. This changes dramatically through September and we go from 16C to about 10C and from 14hrs daylight to 11.5hrs. My phals are kept indoors at about 20C and are just starting to spike now. Do you think they've just detected the temperature change from windows being open/ it's always a little cooler on a windowsill or the light getting to the 11hr mark? Maybe a bit of both?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, as I was saying I believe daylength has no logical explanation to matter, temperature variation, even if mild, is most probably the culprit imo ;)

    I have quite a few reasonably healthy supermarket phalaenopsis. Most of them haven't bloomed for ages (I think either because of heat or lack of sunlight). We're in Spring here. I'm considering putting them outside when minimum temperatures get above about 15C, to try to force them. Do you think forcing winter phalaenopsis in spring will cause problems, or will they simply flower and also grow a summer leaf?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I think it's perfectly fine, that's how nurseries force their orchids, so they have blooming Phals all year for sale ;) just make sure to cut the spikes before summer ends, so they get a bit of vegetative growth too.

    Hi Danny, interesting video. Here in Southern California is still warm, do usually you see first spiked at the end of December-January and currently mines are in vegetative mode (Growing Leaves and roots) i read and article that show the factor they indices spiking is temperature. Says that temperatures above 28°C (82ºF) inhibits spiking 100%, but temps below 26ºC (78oF) can make the initiation of spike and when is lower can help to get more buds. Here is the link for that article academic.oup.com/jxb/article/57/15/4043/548164. However I was wondering if Indonesia experience temps as low as 16oC? Regards

    Oooh! This is a really great topic and I just wanted to put my 2 cents in!
    I can't help but disagree with you on the effect of daylength. It is very well-recorded in scientific literature that a change in daylength across plant clades that the IR light interrupting darkness triggers blooming or the end of dormancy. This reaction is very deeply encoded, such that you can't have a plant without this genetic information. What species-level genetics does is mask that, so that you have two regions always "on" (i.e. "Bloom after the cold ends!" region and also "Bloom when daylength changes!" region), and one might be more important at different times of the year. Some gene regions like that are "MIM" (for IR/Light) and "FLC" and "FLM" (for temperature). Because your orchids no longer have a daylength cue now that you're in Cypress, the only blooming cue your orchids have left to rely on is temperature. This makes a lot of sense since the Phal. spp are epiphytic living in dense canopies, where IR-wavelength light is probably completely reflected, absorbed, or scattered by all of the other vegetation, and their only cues left are temperature and/or moisture. On the other hand, it could also mean they're more sensitive to it (but sensitivity is a whole different issue). There are also many other plant clades that bloom twice (most garden weeds do) because of one, the other, both, or maybe even a third reason (flooding?)! While I agree that if you live in an area with year-round similar daylength, it might not be a blooming cue, but don't take it to mean that it isn't a cue for blooming if you live in temperate or subtropical places. I think a good rule of thumb is whatever is changing during the year (i.e. wet vs dry season, cool vs hot season, long vs short days) is going to be a shift from vegetative to reproductive modes. You just need to figure out which one is the one you're looking for in your region, and usually the answer is that it's more than one thing. I say manipulate whatever is easier for you (it's usually temperature)!

    I've given up on my Phals. 5 years and no spikes, despite being well cared for and healthy. Summer reaches up to 32 degrees and winter temps drop between 5-15 Celsius so there's enough of a temp drop.
    Last ditch effort will be to change their fertilizer. If there's still no spike next winter, they're going into the bin.

      She said if the plant sprout a pike while its new leaf is still not fully grown, the leaf will have a "kink". It wouldnt make sense if she said "keiki".

      A 'kink' is a like a tiny fold or wrinkle in the something. Sometimes it is also used when you sleep wrong and your neck is at an angle (fold) that is hurts trying to make it straight. The plant probably has a wrinkle like when paper in a stuck pinter and more pushed behind, one unwanted fold is a kink.
