    .......wonderful video......be hard to find better info on Phals anywhere......temperature drop is so important......and potassium is super important for water transfer in the plant......hormones I believe play an important part that are overlooked as well.........great show.

      Hi Rick 😍💐 so good to see you, amigo 🫶🏼 thank you for the feedback on the video, I appreciate it very much, also, thank you for watching and for being here! The video I linked in the description goes deeper into the when to cut spikes and why, because of the hormones. Cut too soon, and the orchid will push another spike, so, in order to keep the videos at a digestible length in the hopes that I get into the algorithm, I am trying to stay on topic instead of going where my brain wants me to go 😅 really struggling to get my channel to take off, so I am trying to see how to get information out and hopefully within a timeframe that suits the viewer. So, know that your feedback is very encouraging 🙏🏼 thank you!! Wishing you a wonderful start to the new week with many blessings! Thanks Nina....the phal I rescued from snow last March now has a spike. I got it with 3 leaves ....wilted and limp. Has 7 leaves now.

      HI 😍💐 Its good to see you!! Yes, summer blooming phals will bloom relatively quickly once out of the flask. With the right warmth, consistent light, they are not the kind to take forever (well, there are always exceptions, but they do bloom when they still have the appearance of being a seedling) however, if your's does bloom out, then it is no longer a seedling! 😉 and I HOPE, that it is the violacea because... wow... the fragrance is insanely beautiful! 🤞🏼 please keep me posted! You take us to school with every video and I thank you so much for that.😊 I was able to set spikes on all 20+ phals by setting them in the coldest spot in my growing areas. The phals were exposed to radiant cooling from a exterior glass door . The temp drop was enough to set spikes then moved them to a warmer area. I have a few rescue phals one with only a few buds. I'm going to apply hormone to a node to see if I can get a branch. Thanks again Orchid Master.

      @NinjaOrchids Hi Nina, I have a case in point regarding hormones. As you were helping me through some repotting (a great benefit of being a Member) I accidentally broke off a new phal spike. You told me to cut it clean, put cinnamon on the fresh cut and leave the orchid alone. You taught me that cutting a spike to soon on a weak orchid your trying to save will only make it weaker. The hormones in the orchid are still telling it to set off another spike. The phal with the broken spike did just that, it set up another spike. Thank you Orchid Master.🤩

    Hi Nina, i hope you had a good start in this new year🍀🍀🍀🍾🥳! All my Phals have buds now. I have them in my warm plant room as you know but 3 of them i took in the bedroom where we do not heat this winter because of my Dendrobiums and Oncidiums- which are now also have buds. The Phals had only 2 weeks in the 12-15°C bedroom and it startet to spike only one week later- that was crazy short time!😯🤗. The other ones have day23/night20 and it worked also fine. Most of them i mounted on cork with sphagnum 3 months ago and this pushed also the growths very good because they had to deal first time with less water, because the moss drys out every day- this is like in nature, not directly big stress but it pushes the plants also to build new flower spikes. Thank you for your video! Many beinners or not so experienced growers have this problem and now they can look for a cooler place and look every day, if there soon comes a new growth. How exciting for them- and also for me, because all my rescued Phals i got in spring are now doing fine and it will be a surprise how the flowers will look.😀 Habe a nice evening🙏🍀😘

    Great and informative video, thanks for sharing. I have a mini phal from IKEA that I re-potted last May into semi-hydro, and she has adopted nicely but hasn't started to spike, like my other ones! So I'll be trying the idea I got from your video and will take her downstairs and will put her in a cooler area. Though I knew about the temps drop to induce the spike ( and that is why I leave them in a windowsill so get outdoors coolness) but I will try this. I don't know may be it's like your one that has good roots but no spike, but yours one hasn't done it because it has a green spike. Anyways, thanks for the info and happy growing.

Truly appreciated 🫶🏼 my mini phal, repotted in July of last year, still acclimating to the repot and the fact that she was too small to bloom without any of the hormones they give these orchids. Maybe your's is still acclimating and focussing on transitioning as well. But, give the cool down a try and please let me know if it starts to spike this late in the spiking season 👍🏼 I hope it does because then we have a time frame for future reference that x month it is not too late to get the cool down for eventual spikes 👍🏼 Truly appreciate your time, Mary! 🙋🏻‍♀️☮️💚🕊Another great informative video, thank you very much🤩🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I have a question about optimal conduct of dropping the temperature; gradually in weeks imitating a fast natural seasonal drop or a sudden drop in days? Please forgive me if I’m being silly as a rookie about orchids🤗🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Inci, hi 😍💐thank YOU so much for your feedback, I appreciate the positive response 🙏🏼 never apologize for any questions you have! Please!! I do not have many rules on my channel, but apologizing for asking questions is one of them 😉 imitating a fast natural seasonal drop is the best way to go about it, yes. Anything else would be stressful, and even though spikes may grow under that kind of a quick temperature drop, it will be difficult to decide if the spikes are because of stress and something happened to the orchid because of the sudden temperature drop which will only be evident a little further down the line. Consider the orchid having to acclimate to the lower temperatures and doing it in small increments will be safer without suffering any shock or worse, damage. I hope this helps and if it prompted other questions, please always ask 🫶🏼 thank you so much for watching, Inci ❤️🌸

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      HI Andrea 😍💐 you have a stubborn little candidate there!! Still, if it is in active growth, then it is the kind that needs more structures to perform. Some phals need a lot of leaves, while others are not as demanding. It is healthy and doing well. Now, what I can say is that, you need to find a place where it is much warmer than 21ºC. If your temperatures drop to 15ºC that is prefect, but some phals want to have a bigger temperature drop than 6ºC. If you can find a place where it can live in 25ºC, then get the drop down to 15ºC, it is going to bloom. Maybe not in time for this year, but definitely for the next bloom cycle. I hope that this helps crack the code of your otherwise very healthy little phal 🫶🏼 thank you so much for watching!! I hope you had a beautiful day ❤️🌸

    All great info, but realize that in summer that just because it's 25c in your room... It might be 30c or even 35c by the window. @@NinjaOrchids , I set my thermostat to 78f this summer, but I've seen temps in that window by the glass where my mini phal sits in the 90s. Yes, it maybe 110+ outside, so I'm not surprised and that's why I actually measured the temperature. I'm sure people in snow country know about similar temperatures in winter. So it's important to measure. I'd measure every plant as 12" or 30cm away from the glass can make a huge difference in temperature in extreme temperatures. 💖🌞🌵😷

    All of my phals are spiking and are ok but the Phal. bronz maiden is having a bud blast and makes me very sad. I watched your video on bud blast and I think the cause is the change in room temperature due to a heating failure. The others tolerated the sudden temperature change well, but apparently the bronze maiden did not. I have one question. How much ppm are you fertilize your phals when thay developed the blooms?

    • @viktorijastumpf528
      @viktorijastumpf528 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I don't know what to do, the bronze maiden developed a lot of leaves during the growing season, there would be room for new flower spikes, should I cut off the existing ones from which the buds have fallen or leave them and wait? 🤔

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      HI Viktorija 😍💐 what a shame to hear about your Bronze Maiden! She is a beautiful hybrid and was on my wishlist when I was purchasing my collection. She was not available in those years, but wow, I am sorry to hear about the bud blast! Temperature drop will do that with a phalaenopsis very very quickly, that is such bad luck 😔 I am glad to hear that the others did not blast their buds, though! I always apply 500 ppm. I started with 500ppm in 2023, going up from 300, because they are growing bigger and needed more. So far, there are only a few that I can see with salt build up. During the winter, like now, I am mainly applying CalMag at 300ppm. Then back to fertilizer starting March. So, my fertilizer goes all the way to November, and now I am focussing on CalMag for the coming months. And, I do not have to fill my reservoirs more than 1x/month to give you an idea as to how often I do that. Leave the flower spike of your Bronze Maiden. It will extend! I don't think you will not have another spike growing if you cut the existing spikes off. Bronze Maiden is also a sequential bloomer, so you are not going to go without blooms (keep that heat though 😘) thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! I appreciate your time and support 🫶🏼❤️🌸

I have heard from several viewers that their phals do ok in such low conditions and it is awesome that you left your experience in the comments so that people can benefit from different experiences. Thank you so much! I have to err on the side of caution when it comes to advice that I volunteer on my channel. Especially when it comes to my set up. If someone takes my set up into consideration, leca has evaporative cooling effects which need to be taken into consideration, and other factors, I lean toward the safe ranges for a temperature drop. For that reason, when I get comments like your's I so appreciate them... they are eyeopeners, open up more opportunities with less limitations for different climates, while achieving the same results! I have a question, if I have my plants in a location in the house and want to give them a cooling period in a garage or something. Should I put them in that cooling area with darkness for 4 to 6 weeks or have a light in there as well? I’ve heard mixed reviews on this. Alternatively, if they are kept in the house and I put them outside at night time, would that disturb/shock them too much? I have a bunch of leaves on my plants, but for years they haven’t had any flowers

    • @NinjaOrchids

      Hi 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so first of all, a warm warm welcome and secondly, thank you for being here, for watching and your question. I appreciate your time and support. You can absolutely put them in the garage for 4-6 weeks, but please make sure that they still get excellent light. No darkness, or else, if they spike, the spikes will not be able to cope with the light influence once they are back indoors for your to enjoy your blooms, they may frazzle out. If your outdoors do not drop below the temperature range that phals can tolerate, then yes, that would shock them, but if you have the option to have them outside during the night, then take them outside now and let them have the outdoor temperatures to balance day and night out. I have no idea where you are growing your orchids, what your conditions are, so please take this advice and adjust as per your circumstances. Or, let me know a little more and I can hopefully give you better advice. I hope that you had a wonderful weekend and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

It means a lot and is greatly appreciated 🫶🏼 thank you for commenting so that I can express my appreciation! 😃 Anywhere from 6 - 8 weeks is when you can expect a spike to show in the leaf joints. Always keeping in mind that the orchid gets enough light to do so 👍🏼 if the light levels are too low, no amount of cool down time is going to produce a spike. The orchid in the thumbnail, is already starting on vegetative growth with a new leaf. Usually, if a phal blooms, the new vegetative growth will start well into the blooming cycle or, in some cases, after they have finished blooming. I hope this helps, Bruce! Let me know if my reply prompted any further questions 👍🏼 thank you so very much for watching! I hope you are having a great day and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids You are so kind to welcome me as a subscriber. However, I am the one that is thanking you for all your great information.
      Regarding my question about when to expect flower spikes on my Phals, I guess I have missed the "spiking season?" I gave them a cool-down for 8 weeks in November and December, then went back to regular room temperature in January, expecting spikes, almost immediately, but have not gotten any, yet. My plants are just starting to push new leaves now and the roots are wonderfully verdant. They receive morning sun and seem happy, but I must be missing something, based on your tutorials, but I am at a loss to know where I am going wrong.
      Muchas gracias por tu gran informaciónes. I will be a devoted subscriber and appreciate your efforts, no end.

      Now, that is surprising 🤔 my first thoughts were, cool down should start in October, for 6-8 weeks for them to start spiking in January, but it is still odd that you don't have a single spike. The next thought that I had immediately after that is, there is still a slight chance that some will spike even though it is a little late in the day. Then, I wondered, how long have you had your phals? Did they arrive in bloom last year? When did they arrive in bloom, what month, when did they finish blooming and how long did they have between the end of blooming until the cool down. Sorry, but these were the thoughts that came to my mind as I read your comment earlier, but could not get back to you soon enough. You see, it makes a difference when your phals arrived in your collection. IF they are new, then it is possible they are going through the acclimating phase but if they are well established in your collection and have been around for a full 12 months, then they should be out of that phase. Am I making sense? I am going to link a video that may be of interest to you. While it covers when the right timing presents itself to cut a spike, it goes into details as to how the hormones the orchid produces, affect the timing of spike growth. It is possible that there is some information that can help troubleshoot further? th-cam.com/video/RBpYcpfOxFk/w-d-xo.html please let me know if you would like me to 'dig deeper' and provide me with more details as per my questions above. 🫶🏼

      @@NinjaOrchids I just love this personal help. Thanks in advance, no matter what the outcome.
      My situation: I have 5 phals in total one was given to me when the flowers were wilted and waning, one was given when it wouldn't grow for its owner, and I found one on a table with no blooms or spikes, in my building. The remaining 2 plants were actually keikes from one of the ones I just mentioned. (Both keikes are doing very well, also, but I severed them from their mother plant in late summer, so I really didn't expect spikes from the keikes, yet.) I am very new at orchid growing and I came into possession of the three at about this time, last year, maybe 49 weeks ago. Your idea of, "out of phase" sounds like a possibilty, since I have barely had them for a year. And refering to your "Hormones are the Key" video, I don't believe my plants would be considered weak, at all.
      Finally, I first wrote my comment about when I should expect a spike, when in the last couple of days, all three of my plants, sans keikes, have begun to push a new leaf! It was disconcerting since I believed that the chances of spikes were lessened by the beginning of a growth period. One of my three has also shown the nub of a new root in the past 24 hours.
      Sorry for the lengthy verbage, but I hope I have filled in the blanks that you inquired about. Throw all that on the wall and give me any thoughts you have. May I call you Nina and I'm Bruce.

      Alrighty!! Thank YOU for being so kind as to take time to write out all the deets for me 👍🏼 I am glad that your's do not fall into the weak category, that is fantastic! So, it is possible that one of them may spike, and give you out of season blooms, but I am going to say that they are getting acclimated. BUT, you are already ahead of the game with your's because, sometimes phals and other orchids do not respond with new growth so 'quickly' (quickly being relative when growing orchids). So, to read that you have vegetative growth happening so early in the actually season, that is awesome. While I know you are disappointed to not have a spike on the go, please know that, your phals are on the right track and healthy. The hormones thing is something that you can tap back in when fall comes around. The video may have addressed hormones in reference to weak orchids and how spikes consume energy and orchid may push spikes as a last ditch effort to survive, but hormones come into play with a cool down as well. Come fall, we can work with the cool down 6 weeks sooner and then by January 2025 (latest) spikes should grow. If you are happy with your light levels, this is going to be a fun year watching them grow even stronger 👍🏼 absolutely, please call me Nina! Nina and Ninja are so close that I overlook when someone calls me Ninja. I have dyslexia and letters easily go missing. I am worse when it comes to numbers, but it also happens with letters. 🫣 It is wonderful getting to know you and your collection, Bruce! Thank you so much for being so diligent in your response. It is so welcome to get such detail as opposed to a single question and then I can't help, or hear back from a viewer 🤷🏼‍♀️ please keep me updated with any new developments!! Even the good one 😉🫶🏼 hope your day is already fantastic when you get around to reading this reply ❤️

    I have a bouquet of tree orchids, which are cut from their root (just the top of the flowe is preserved in a capsule with water). Is there any chance I can save these flowers and regrow them? The flower store owner said I can grow them to a full flower, with roots and all, but I have never heard/seen of such thing and I've been trying to search information on the web, but I can't seem to find anything...which kinds proves my doubts. Can you please give me an advice, is there a chance I can save them?

      Hi Irina 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so first of all, a warm warm welcome and a big thank you for being here, for watching and your comment. I appreciate it very much 🫶🏼 secondly!! To get a bouquet of these blooms is super special and congratulations on having something so beautiful. 😍 It is possible for the stem to grow new plants, yes, but it can fail as well depending on the conditions provided AND it takes a long time to make it happen. So, I have a video, a very old video that shows how to do it, and this method works even though my attempt failed. So here is the link to that video: th-cam.com/video/DtMUVDKfZWs/w-d-xo.html please follow the steps and I will keep my fingers crossed that it works for you! And forgive me for the slow commentary, it really is one of the first videos I ever uploaded and I had not found my rhythm yet. IF you don't mind, I am going to link another video I made to WARN people of orchid growing tips that promise many flowers off of a single stem by showing 'miracle' methods and 'miracle' items / products to get 'immediate' results. PLEASE, do not click on these videos, even though it is tempting. They are fake orchid care videos and only there to spread misinformation while making a LOT of money on TH-cam without providing any service to growing orchids. Know that, with orchids, nothing happens quickly, they need a lot of attention and time / patience. If your stems do not make it, then it is not because you did something wrong compared to what you see in my video. It happens that we are not successful in our attempt to propagate the stems. That is normal and to be expected. We always hope to be successful, but we have to be realistic in this hobby. This is the link to the fake videos, that will show you an idea of what NOT to click so that you and your stems do not go along the incorrect path: th-cam.com/video/HZ3tVz0VJuo/w-d-xo.html 🙏🏼 if you have any questions, at any point in time, no matter the video, PLEASE, always feel free to ask me, no matter which video you are watching! I am here to help, always 👍🏼 I hope you are having a great day and once again, welcome! 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      Be Still 😍 hi 💐 welcome!! How kind of you to be here, watching the video and well... being here in general! Thank you so so much 🫶🏼 truly appreciate the support 🫶🏼 ok... let's see what we can do with where you grow your phals in your climate. I need to know the following: Do you have a lanai, or any covered area outdoors that never gets direct sun? What are your steady temperatures where you grow your phals if you have them indoors exclusively? Do you have a room that you usually keep cooler indoors than the other areas of your home? I know, a lot of questions, but I am trying to get an idea of where you can grow your phals where they are exposed to heat, to then get moved to an area where they will experience a temperature drop. It does not have to be a COLD temperature drop, instead, we need to find where you can get them from hot to a a cool down. Then they will spike. Let me know a little bit more about the questions and we should be able to get your's to spike. 👍🏼 thank you again for being here! I hope your day is going beautifully for you and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids Hi thank you so much for your quick reply 🌸 I only have 2 orchards but I love them and would love to see spikes and flowers one day. I keep them on my kitchen table next to the window. It’s a pretty steady temp in here, around 75f give or take a few degrees. Yes I do have a lanai a few hours in the early morning it gets direct sun otherwise it’s just bright light. My whole house stays the same temp. Maybe the garage will be slightly cooler at night? I see all new roots happening but no spikes

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      You are so welcome! I love doing my best to help where and when I can 🫶🏼🥰 So, here is what I suggest you do! Use your Lanai to your advantage. That will be your high temperature. I am just going to assume your temps at night in the Lanai, do not drop below 68ºF. That is the lowest temperature that they will grow well in without stalling. To acclimate them to the higher light influence in the lanai, find a corner back against the siding of the house that does not get any sun at all. The move from inside to shade is a lot more light that we can actually notice. They need to get used to the higher light and full shade will get that done. There is no need to actually have them in direct sun, but if one day they can handle the early morning sun before it it gets hot, then 'we' can always move them to that light source, but for now, the shadiest place in your lanai. I am going to suggest that you do not think of getting your orchids to bloom this time around, but what we are now going to work toward is the growth of bloom spikes starting late fall of this year. So, your outdoor temperatures in your lanai are going to be really high. I am going to assume steady mid 90sºF during the day? If it goes higher than that, its not a problem, I am just throwing a high number out. From the time you move them to the lanai (if night temps stay above 68ºF all the time) until late fall, they will be exposed to those higher temps. Then, late fall, when you move them indoors, they will be in a cooler temperature environment and that will be enough of a differential to get them to produce flower spikes. The ideal margin to produce flower spikes is an 18ºF drop in temperature and you are 20ºF lower indoors than the possible average outdoor temperature. So.... the bad news is, unfortunately, there will be a little more time to wait, but the good news is... you are not inconveniencing yourself by having orchids in a garage (which could end up being much hotter, with minimal light) and you can enjoy your orchids while you spend time in your lanai. And then.... we wait to see those blooms again 😃 Don't forget to water them though! Once outside... they may need more of that good stuff! I hope this helps out and please keep me updated if you have any doubts or concerns moving forward! 👍🏼
