  • Today we talk about Phalaenopsis Orchids, as their blooming season is just around the corner!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
In order to obtain multiple flower spikes and a great flowering show from orchids, we need to keep in mind the culture and needs these orchids require, but also know which Phalaenopsis orchids are able to produce the show we are looking for.
    1. The best candidates for multiple flower spikes are the complex, flower shop Phalaenopsis. So any orchid can produce a great show, but not all will.

I once had a phalaenopsis orchid plant that quit blooming so I set it outside on a tree stump, out of it’s pot, with just it’s wood chips entwined. I did not pay it any attention for months, but when I did, I was in shock. It had grown so large and had 8-10 spikes in bloom. This was on the wet side of Maui at 500 feet elevation, with eastern exposure, temps 70 at night, 80+ in day. I guess you could say it had found its sweet spot.

I had a Cat for many years that did not bloom. I set it on a table in the back yard and forgot about it. My neighbor told me that he was amazed by the beautiful plant on the table in the back yard. There it was in full bloom; bright pink. Now I set plants outside in humid and hot summers here in MD.

I personally never cut a flower spike off. I let the plant decide what to do with it. Since it has taken energy to grow it and yes it takes energy to maintain it, the plant can also take the energy back from it by drying it out and using this energy to grow smt else. Sometimes it grows a new flower spike from the enrgy, sometimes it regrows from another spot of the spike and sometimes it dries the spike half way and grows another spike from the old one, I only cut off the dried part. And even that has happened that the old spike regrows blooms without growing a new stem after taking a little resting time. In the time I've had my phaleanopsis I've had it bloom multiple times in the year but I've only ever had 3 separate stems. One is inactive now, and one is blooming again. And regrowth activity on the last stem which is half way dried and cut. By cutting a stem it would take forever for the plant to grow a suitable space for a new stem to form from the base.

    Hey there,
I cut my Phal’s stems after the last flowers dropped right above the lowest nodes and they started flowering again, three flowers on each. Also new spikes are coming in, so there are four in total right now. My orchid is an old girl, 7 years in age. Also has eight layers of leaves. Thank you for your amazing tips! Can’t wait to see how many flowers I will have this year.

    • @cassandra364
      @cassandra364 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

WOW! Sounds amazing eight layers of leaves!!! Congratulations!!! I’m jealous… I’ve only had five layers at the most! I’ve found in 2020 that putting them outside during Spring/Summer months helps with growing and producing flower spikes maybe one day I will enjoy an eight layer orchid!!😉

Good video. Always feel that you have done an adequate amount of research/study in preparing your videos. I like that you make references to AOS articles and that you present what you have actually discovered through caring for your orchids. For the first time I have some phals that are flowering for me. Some of that success is due to watching your videos and those of some other TH-camrs. Thanks! (Loved the dove cameos.)

I agree with your observation. My experiences showed that it’s better when I cut off old spikes too. Another observation I made that may not be true is whatever I do doesn’t show right away but seems to take longer time to show. For instance, feeding, if I fed well and growing healthy this year the results seem to show next year with more flower spikes.

Thank you for sharing all this orchid info. Last year my son got me three phal orchids. (The store was throwing them out. Wow!Sometimes dumpster diving pays off). I’ve always wanted one but wasn’t ready to pay the price. So when he brought them home they looked healthy and still had flowers on 2 of them but in desperate need of water. The flowers died off but the plants are doing great. I repotted them with the pots and potting mix you suggested and this year they are growing new leaves. So happy. Hoping to get flower spikes.

You gave me the courage to try again and purchase a Phalaenopsis.
I was the person who thought that orchids were those amazing plants you got as a gift that swiftly disintegrated as soon as you walked in and set them down in your house. Through your videos I was able to educate myself and get so much more information, I actually feel confident about my Phal and my 3 flowering spikes. I am determined to make them last as long as I can! I know she needs a bigger vase but I won't risk repotting now, she is just starting to acclimate to my house and in bloom, also I see healthy green roots (You see Sensei, You have taught me wisely!!!). Anyway, thank you, and don't be afraid to put on more gratuitous bird content, they are lovely~~

Hi Danni, great video. I have been following your videos since last year and bought a phalaenopsis orchid in Jan 2020 and it gave a great show. Its grown well vegetatively during its growing season and now its shooting out 2 flower spikes to my surprise. I initially thought they were roots. I am excited to see what she looks like this year with a double spike. Thank you for your informative and educational videos, they are simple to follow and understand and very effective. Thanks

One of my phalaenopsis has 6 flower spikes, and it's a surprise since I didn't take care of it well this past winter. Still in bloom now!

@@seanbelli4705 That's why I said it's a surprise! :) I have to admit I was afraid that it would die after bearing such a heavy load of spikes last year, but as of now that same orchid has shown 4 tiny spikes!

I bought orchids with 6 spikes but they died after few seasons

    • @nguyencao5165

@@MalouCalanza Sorry that your orchids died, but I think it's normal for store bought orchids last for just a few seasons. A couple of mine ended the same way! The way they were grown and "pumped" with fertilizers to make them attractive for sale has dictated their fate! :(

Thanks for that very informative video. I love my phalaenopsis orchids but I’m super impressed by how healthy yours look. I especially enjoyed learning about taking off the spent flower spike and not letting it get secondaries. I’ve always let mine go and they get one or two poor quality flowers. If it wasn’t raining right now I would be down in the green house right now 🤗🌸

I use to cut off the spikes after they bloomed but I won't anymore. Both spikes I left on from the last bloom, re-bloomed this spring! They never dried out, stayed green and bloomed!
