I absolutely love this car! Watching the professional racers drive this and give it a positive review have been so fun to watch. You can tell the race drivers really enjoy this car.
Of course, if they get paid enough they'll enjoy an f150 lightning
Just an exceptional presentation
Thank you
If I'm not mistaken the N also has more spot reinforced welds made to the BIW, which is pretty impressive for something in this price range.
Hyundai and VW , & every one else should Already be using Gigacasting , structural battery pack , 4680 cell and Discrete cast AL Front & Rear end modules.
@markplott4820 that's a lot of upfront cost. And things like Giga casting also restrict model changes, while Hyundai prefers to make a wider range of cars with more frequent exterior and frame updates.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N starts at $66,100 not including the $1,475 freight cost. It has an EPA range of 221 miles.
Great information !! I've been a hyundai owner for years, although the n line is a little out of my style. I'm more the palisade, and now Santa Fe hybrid calligraphy style. This car is awesome. I love the style and performance.
Cybertruck is outselling the Santa Fe.
That's because it's an ev plus it's the ugliest refrigerator on wheels !!!
Jordan doing another Hoist review? I watch it. I really love the balance of technical knowledge with language and concepts I can understand!
Thanks for watching!
The theory that components are designed "for the lifecycle of the vehicle" and thus don't need any consideration for service is a very "engineer" mentality, I would say a rookie engineer mentality. A qualified, experienced engineer will understand that even the best designs will have occasional faults or failures due to things they couldn't consider or simply defective parts, and therefore serviceability should *always* be a consideration, especially for something that costs potentially 5 figures to replace (like a large HV battery). I'm glad that Hyundai/Kia have the common sense to still consider serviceability for their vehicles. Other manufacturers, especially some of the non-Legacy ones, could learn something valuable from this, and likely will change their practices as their cars get older and more of them get scrapped for something that should be a simple repair.
I totally agree with You. But there is something what Hyundai is copying from Tesla to reduce costs at cost of serviceability. I'm talking about that Hyundai will also use gigapress to reduce production cost. But as You know if you have an accident with damage in the pressed parts Your car is scrap. It is not worth to repair because the cost for repair is too high, except You are living in Cuba.
And yet Hyundai chose to integrate the wheel bearing into the half-shaft and not make it serviceable.
Uhm no, what you describe is exactly a rookie engineer mentality. The decrease in manufacturing cost is going to far outweigh the warranty cost for those few units that may fail.
@@S2kDude36Hyundai did it for performance, not cost cutting or serviceability. The integrated shaft is only available in N cars.
I would say it is more a bean counter approche/ MBA play book type of consideration 😮💨
Great presentation. Very informative.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. It has been incredibly valuable to me. I look forward to the opportunity to learn more from you in the future.
You are doing an excellent job making car mechanics love you more.
This is a future collectable!
🙋♂️THANKS JORDAN AND MUNRO 🤗🔋🔋🔋
This video should go longer! Good stuff, lots of learnings from your videos
Glad you liked it!
Hmmm safety stand shifted around 9:33 and Jorden didn't even flinch! 😱
Very interesting. Now I know what a virtual ball joint is. Thanks Jordan. You are going to tell us how driving this beast too? Please? Maybe take Sandy along too? 🙏

2:11 Somebody was doing burnouts in the Munro parking lot.
I will gladly pay extra for a vehicle that can be serviced and repaired.
Oh, you will.
@@Derpy1969 Much less wasteful than a Tesla with a super efficient megacasting that costs 75% more to insure because everything totals it. Would rather give my money to Hyundai than to Liberty Mutual to make those insufferable ads.
I'd rather pay less for a vehicle that doesn't need servicing and repairs! Insurance of EVs the same as ICE (of the same cost). Silly that some compare insurance costs for their old 10 year old worthless car which is cheap to insure with any new car (ICE or EV). If a megacasting is damaged to the point the car is totaled and it saves your life, in a ICE car without megacasting, you'd likely be dead in a similar accident so you don't have to care about repairs!
@@Ficon Are Teslas with megacasting still high to insure? I have an Ioniq5 and was surprised high coverage insurance wasn't much more than my old Golf. Regardless, theoretically if a megacasting needs repair, then chances are you were in a horrific accident and the car would be totaled regardless. Those castings are nearly bulletproof.
@ Tesla insurance depends on the market but they do get totaled easily because even fender benders are too expensive to repair. My EV9 was the same as similarly-priced ICE cars.
An unserviceable wheel bearing may be manufacturally lean, but for the 2nd or 3rd owner, that repair cost may be prohibitive and in fact, depending on thecost vs co-repair elements vs age vs condition. That single repair could indeed contribute to an early placement in the junk yard.
20:58 Nope, they are *not* getting cost savings by sharing the pedestrian warning functionality; check the factory schematic. They are using a standard pedestrian warning module (up front) shared with many Hyundai models, and the extra 5N-specific speakers (and wiring harness) are tied into some extra channels of the car's audio system (presumably just extra software). Hyundai is making sound customization part of their local-to-Korea 5N racing league, so perhaps they wanted an easier platform for firmware customization?
I didn't think they would go through the entire recertification process with a different pedestrian warning speaker vs the one used in the rest of the lineup. Extra cost and weight, but the same can be said for massaging seats.
Wasn’t there a Winona Ryder movie where the husband/boyfriend has a job designing speakers for an electric car to make it go vroom-vroom? Here is life imitating art, and might I add very unnecessarily so.
I just looked up the movie the title is _The Dilemma_ .
New Acronym needed for that external amplifiers speaker for "enthusiasts" : EFM: Electronic Fart Module
Tesla fans will be quick to point out they already have the fart noise option. It was either that or full self driving. Priorities, man.
Not sure I understood but I gather that when it comes to suspension that, "Two arms are better than one?"
4 arms even better , virtual 5 ball. like TESLA.
It saves space in the packaging by making the lower control arm appear to be longer than either of the two arms by making the virtual pivot point appear to be at the point when the two arms would, intersect. As noted it helps keep the geometry stable and adds strength. I am pretty sure the other egmp platforms also have virtual ball setup similar (identical?) to this one.
@@markplott4820From a driving dynamics point of view yes, but not durability. 😅 the triangle of benefits...
@@wtmayhew I believe the idea is to put the pivot in a place INSIDE some of the ironwork, like the disk. Something that cannot be achieved without the virtual pivot system.
@ Good clarification, thank you.
motor == torque generator nice!
It also hums. 😁
There must be demand somewhere for a beam e-axle. I'm wondering if handling of these EV's just wouldn't be that good without this sophisticated suspension.
Every car that can move under electric power has some kind of pedestrian awareness sound generator. I haven't seen it happen yet, but I will be first in line to get a hack that gives my car the George Jetson sound.
What about the thermal system, anything different?
I can't wait to hear Sandy complaining about steering wheel stalks and dash knobs and buttons.
What about winter performance / durability aspects? Considering salty roads, freeze cycles, etc.
Had to stop recording to take a break and laugh about the speaker. 🤣
You say more weight and cost on stamp metal pieces that weighs 5 pounds and cost 10 dollars, come on.
Is there some reason they can't take a wheel off for the video?
This vehicle was not ours to keep.
@@MunroLive What does that have to do with taking off a wheel?
The bottom of the vehicle seems to be very unstreamlined. Were theere additional covers that have been removed so we could see structural details or has Hyundai not concerned about underbody aerodynamics?
My guess was that covers were removed, I think that should have been mentioned.
What is the life expectancy of the Ionic 5?
As Jordan pointed out, the back end of the battery pack looks like such an afterthought with the welded on L-brackets and wasted space above the pack, almost like it wasn't originally designed that way.
He explained why that is.
Hello sir, you do not have any reviews on Hyundai, I would like to consult you, I am thinking of buying a Hyundai ioniq 5. What do you think about 58 kW long-lasting riding? It uses NMC battery. If you have knowledge about Hyundai, can you help me? It is nice to see you.
We did a teardown on the Ioniq 5. Multiple videos are on the channel.
Isn't that "Diffuser" PURE show and probably even counter-beneficial in its implementation?
It's has a MUCH higher angle than what is usually considered still effective (15° max), the guide vanes are only in the area with the way to steep angle, and then there is this lip that ends at the actual, maybe diffuser-esque working underbody panel, where you'd actually want a real diffuser to extend in a smooth arc as far back as possible..
Looks cool, though. Not everything has to have a function. Some of it is form.
@jaymzx0 ok. Personally I'd rather have the real thing than the ignorant-child-pleaser.
The new Model 3 Performance comes to mind.
Yeah it's pure show

Holy cow that vehicle weighs nearly 5k pounds.
@@madmotorcyclist reminds me of the Scion TC and Mitsubishi 3000GT. Tanks!
Only ways 50lbs more to the similar sized (length and width) Telluride
It's actually as roomy as an ICE X5M and Cayenne and weighs less despite 500kg battery. 200kg lighter than the hybrid M5. Similar weight as a Taycan that is much more cramped. Similar weight to a RS6. It's not heavy for what it is (great family car and performance car in one)...
@@ninjadriver3271 5,000lbs is a heavy vehicle. My bolt at 3500lbs is heavier than I prefer. Had a V8 '87 Mustang that weighed 3,000lbs even on the scale. Would have been entirely possible to bring it down to 2600lbs which I consider light.
Ioniq 5 is not a small car. Almost same as Model X.
I like the technical details but would rather you not say "we" when talking about a design or implementation unless you or your company actually did it.
Considering that the battery is 30% of the EV cost, it makes sense to have at least some serviceability. On the other side, unserviceable wheel bearings are not really an innovation in my book. The innovation might have been to make them replaceable in the same package.
IF , Hyundai used 4680 cybercells , pack would NEVER need servicing.
@@markplott4820. Contactors have a definite service life. There are often two contactors. There is usually a low current contactor with a series resistor in parallel with the high current contactor. The low current usually closes a few hundred milliseconds before and stays closed a fee hundred milliseconds after the main contactor switches to reduce arc pitting of the main contactor.
The cells in the battery pack of most decent cars made in the last few years will probably last the life of the car if reasonably cared for. Providing a service cover to replace the contractor or swap the battery management system board is prudent engineering for serviceability. It is good to see the cover on the Ioniq 5 is accessible without having to drop the heavy battery off the car.
“30%” is imaginary. Good design ignores non-facts.
@@markplott4820 Sure, Tesla has a great history of not lying at every point and overhyping their products.

Any updates on Elon’s foreign policy meeting with the Iranians?
Underrated comment.
The Logan Act, 18 USC §953, is an old but rarely-invoked federal statute prohibiting unauthorized private diplomacy with foreign nations.
@@wtmayhew Oh? So, Elon is very possibly committing a crime? What could possibly happen to him?
@ Elon Musk can probably do whatever he feels doing. Even in the unlikely event Musk were indicted and convicted, he would be pardoned within femtoseconds. In Trump 1.0, Michael Flynn did something similar consorting with Russia, but avoided the Logan Act by copping a plea deal to something lesser and then Trump gave him a pardon.

Reviewers need to cease speaking of track performance: 99.99% of owners do not and will not go to the track. Insurance does not cover damage due to track activity.
Exactly. I drove a Leapmotor C10 yesterday and it is a really good car. Softly sprung, decent performance, comfortable and spacious. No attempt to make it sporty at all. It seems like the Chinese are not scared of making a car that is unashamedly for the street only.
Need to cease speaking? Listen to yourself.
Some cars like the 5N are made to be track cars... Why pay so much extra for cooling that lets you race for significant periods of time without overheating if you do not want to race?
@@0ooTheMAXXoo0 Munro would be apoplectic again if he saw that hvac system with three separate systems cf OctoValve.
th-cam.com/video/VuS2KRL5YwA/w-d-xo.html
I was thinking the same thing. The odds of this model car seeing track day in the hands of anyone other than a reviewer are pretty close to zero. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a good car, but a 5,000 pound EV with a OK handling isn’t what an enthusiast wants to take to the track.
Audi was doing this in the mid 2000’s, not sure if anything is being reinvented here.
Doing what? Audi never did two lower control arms with a MacPherson strut 😅 Only normal lower control arm VW platforms or 4 arm (+track rod) Audi platforms. Audi calls it multilink, first introduced with the A8 D2 in 1994.
This Ioniq 5 N is special because the same platform is now upgraded from the traditional one control arm MacPherson strut to have two arms connect to a different knuckle to be able to mount the two lower control arms. It is not a common suspension setup for MacPherson strut.
@ So temu multi-link, got it.
Jokes aside I see what you mean, I was referring to the use of two lca’s to achieve virtual pivot, affecting the scrub radius. Did not realize this had not been done macpherson prior to the Ioniq. I suppose the achievement here is good performance with tight packaging and a low part count.
@@Nathan0A I didn't say it hasn't been done. I said it isn't common. With a quick Google I can find Pontiac G8 has a similiar front suspension. Wikipedia has an article called Dual pivot steering geometry but it has examples of cars where there are upper wishbones such as the BMW 3 series, 7 series, Teslas etc.
External subwoofer for exhaust sound 😂😅😢🤦🏻
Everyone is sceptical untill they try it, this is the first manufacturer that has executed it well
I’m fine with my EV being quiet, that is one of its cool attributes. I don’t need to compensate for undersized body parts with a loud car.
@@wtmayhew it's not that loud, externally it plays a role in warning people you're coming, this is deeply ingrained still with people and I notice people become less startled they hear something is coming (you can switch the external sounds off).
As for the inside, this is about emotion. An emotion related to active driving. Some people do not get it and prefer silence when driving and are happy for it, good for you. I've had three EVs before the 5N and always missed my gas fun car when driving for fun so I kept them. With the 5N, I was able to sell my fun gas car...
Driving for me is a life long passion and active driving without sound is like dancing without music for me. I apparently don't care if the music is "live" or recorded, but I need good music to fully enjoy it. And just like a stereo, I can just turn the sound off when I just want to listen to the radio and relax on my commute. Win-win.
Make no mistake, the 5N is not a car for the masses. The majority of people can't handle or have no need for such (track) performance, so it is ok to not get it. But no need to make references to body parts, it's offending.
That integrated hub and half shaft will, save them $1 per unit… Sure foist that added maintenance cost on the customer when the supposed permanently lubricated sealed bearing needs replacement after 36,500 miles - especially knowing the level of quality of Hyundai/Kia parts. More revenue for the dealer.
Compare this 1960s welded steel stuff to gigacastings. 'Nuf said.
MUNRO Live - at end of the day both the MEB (vw) Platform & the Hyundai e-GiMP platform are OUTDATED , are too HEAVY and too EXPENSIVE to build.
the e-GiMP platform in particular is using too many FASTENERS , Brackets holding up more Brackets , and way too many HEAVY stamped steel braces .
and Hyundai is NOT using enough AL cast parts and DISCRETE front & rear modules.
your COMMENTS are cringe BRO like tf is the DEAL with you
@jinpingthebear110 - Afuela.
Mark, you're regressing.
My readout is that good enough is good enough. A seemingly outdated platform is OK if it reduces tooling costs and customers are willing to buy the product. Hyundai has to consider how many units they’re planning to sell as whether the cost of tooling up for more cast aluminum components would recouped within the projected sales numbers.
cutting edge back then. however, HyuKia needs to move-on or copy the latest and greatest from China
Shouldn’t the front end of that battery pack where the high voltage cable is be more protected from foreign objects, water, ice , rocks, etc.?
