$200.00 for a guitar as playable as this one appears to be, the build that makes it up, the sound, barring shitty tuners, is a damn steal! It would be a great mod project.
How honest you are is the best part of your videos imo, I love the full disclosure! When it comes to TH-cam gear reviews, no matter how good you record your sound or upload it or whatever, it will never sound like it actually will on your rig, and most importantly in a real room compared to through recording, uploading and sound device filters sadly, so you can't really trust what you hear. But, it means that the only thing you could potentially actually trust is what the reviewer says about the gear! This does not get filtered by recordings! (Gets filtered pretty hard by big amounts of money sometimes tho lol) So it's actually VERY important that the review is honest, that you really talk about all the good and bad parts of each piece of gear! You're doing a very good job at it! I almost feels like a guitarist buddy from the other band that bought a new piece of gear everytime you see him and gives you his full test and opinion on it haha, I love it! One question tho : do you still have the PRS Chris Robertson Sig? What happened to it? I want one so bad haha, that humbucker + P90 combo is J U I C Y Keep up the good shit my man! :D
It’s interesting that I saw a play through by a Australian guy and his friend the other day, and they didn’t find the issues such as the finish you found, and they said that they loved sound of the guitar. Of course, I liked your video and it doesn’t mean that you are wrong. Heck nothing I say is meaningful but they didn’t talk about the flaws. I think that the playing examples you and the others did sound good! As always you did a great job on it. Thanks!
I wish HB would go back to the more rounded lower horn on their "vintage" style guitars. The headstock still differentiates the guitars from the big G and it really isn't a horribly bad design. The pointed horn kind of makes them look a little too modern... just my 2 cents and it really isn't even worth that.
I've been watching reviews on this articular HB all over youtube and this is the first video that has called into question the machine heads. Everyone else has said they're fine and do the job. I have heard a few times people complain about the guitar being dirty on arrival and the frets needing a light polish but nothing serious. Also there have been a couple of videos where the paint finish wasn't best but on the whole everyone has been more than happy with the playability and sound quality and tones it's capable of. At the very least this guitar seems to be punching well above its weight. What's not to like.
I bought this SC Jr model, out of the box I was disappointed, High action with bridge bottomed out, no adjust to lower the action. However I had watched a video by Steve Cone on this guitar where he had a very affordable solution(thank you Steve). He replaced the stock bridge with a Musiclily replacement bridge. You use the posts that come with the bridge in the inserts already in the guitar(same thread). Now I had limited time when I swapped them, and the intonation was not set, but I measured the nut to center of saddle for each string before i removed original. I backed the set screws on the back of the bridge all the way out, and set the lengths according to my measurements. Most of the string in the saddles were either bottomed out, or close to it, but they were very close to what I measured. The fix if needed would be when changing strings next time and setting intonation, to swap the springs to to back side of the saddle. I still was not impressed with the guitar, yet had not plugged it in. I thought , well I will give it a day to settle in to new adjustments and go from there. The next day I plugged it in, and it had indeed settled in, and was actually playing very nice, better than I had expected for sure. After playing it for half an hour I was digging it for sure. It was at .060 thou on E string, and .040 on the e string, and could go some lower still. This is without adjusting any truss rod, so a tweek on that and I think it will be in the sweet spot. This is lengthy, but the bridge is on Amazon for like 15 bucks, and this guitar impressed me that much that I wanted to help someone who had the same problem with a quick and easy solution.
Love your demos! I know this probably is a recurrent comment, but it would be nice to hear more the guitars you test without so much distortion. Sometimes I find difficult to get the tone ;) All best
Have you popped the cover off that "P-90"? I've heard of companies putting single coils in P-90 or humbucker covers. Does it have two magnets as a real P-90 should?
I have one and can confirm Hunter's review is accurate. The tuners are meh but I like the guitar very much overall. Mine was set up pretty well. I'm eventually going to put a MojoTone noiseless Hot p90 in it. It's worth the price it goes for.
Something was buzzing loudly in this video. Either the pickups are noisy as Nell or something else in his pedal chain was buzzing. Theres a video on Spectre Sound Studios page where Glenn shows that some Harley Benton pickups are microphonic (apparently meaning they pick up extra noise like a microphone as opposed to just the string sound). You can simply talk near them and hear your voice through the amp. They were also buzzing like crazy.
Very well mentioned that in low-budget guitars consistency and QC are paramount. What's the use if one in five is good out of the box, two need an hour of tweaking and set up, and two will end up in a corner or get sold within a few weeks for being not so playable? Most aspiring player/buyers don't have luthier skills or a neighbour or cousin having them.
I don't agree about the Roswell pickups being a weak spot. At all. In fact, they are by far the only budget pickups worth keeping. I'm quite fussy about tone, but I still haven't upgraded the PAF-type pups in my SC-550 because I like their vintagey sound so much better than for example their more expensive Seymour Duncan counterparts (SH1/SH2). The Roswell's are well made, they're quiet & responsive, they do exactly what they're supposed to do and sound is - of course - just a matter of taste. YMMV.
I have the DC version which is advised as TV Yellow but definitely isn't TV Yellow it's more mustard/caramel. And it's a very thin coat of paint as you can clearly see wood pattern underneath. Other than that it's pretty great. The build quality is excellent it's got a great feeling neck and the frets are nice and smooth with no pointy edges. It stays in tune very well too. The only thing I'd say needs an upgrade is the pick up, it's kinda weak. But for £170 I can't have any complaints.
Not sure if they addressed it, but I have the same Wilkinson tuners on my HB Doublecut Jr and theyre great!! The only think Im going to do is upgrade the pickup to a Mojotone Quiet Coil p90. The bridge and wiring was already upgraded by the previous owner. I hate the stock bridge on these.
Nice to hear you say the tuners suck....considering you do work for Harley Benton. Makes your review believable. None of the other reviewers have mentioned this.... in fact they talk about how great the tuners are.
Honestly, I wish they did Tobacco Sunburst and Black/Tortoise as a nod to Gibson, and then veered off course with the other colors. It would have been awesome to have a Red/Silver Paisley, or a Diamond White Body/Black Pearl pickguard, for a slight upcharge. The whole line doesn't have to be traditional Gibson colors.
got Les Paul Junior cgibson custom shop.. in my rehearsals I use the sc junior.its far more aggressive. than the warm sounding custom shop. you re right with the artificial feeling, you can call it also steril.. the custom shop is more a warm old violin, but in the rehearsals I don't need this. the HB is a damn aggressive machine. for the stinky rehearsal room. my custom shop is my bedroom for a smooth sounding ambiance.. but im full of love for both. it depends for what..respect to the HB
Hey Bro , excuse the ignorance but when you showed the signal chain is listed where do I find that , I saw your marshall was on but was hoping to get some ideas of pedals or what your using thanks for all the great videos
This riff! Since you revisited it, can you pleaseeeeeee revisit Bound for the hang? Asking for a friend! 😂😂😂 Also, the way you shook your head from left to right when you got into the riff? Swaggg. I’m jacking that to use as my stage move. 👍🏾
I dig this. I see that i commented before but forgot all about it. Bought the '20 Epi LP Jr TB. Its been great but i really dig the HB. Plus i could have saved nearly $200. Its cool. Always wanted a Jr. After nearly 50 (!) years, i have one. Even says Les Paul Junior on the headstock :)
I've heard and read that Eastcoast guitars (distributed by Anderton) are pretty good budget friendly guitars too. How about comparing a HB with one of these Eastcoast ?
You've convinced me. I'm buying a high quality neck and body and making my own double cut. Still cool as shit guitar though I might look at that bridge for the build. Maybe a vibrant as shit stain with a few thin coats of nitro? I might need to get one of those high intergity stickers to go on the pickguard, you still throw a sticker in with every merch order?
Hey man great bid as usual, have you heard of Vintage (brand) guitars? I've just acquired a vintage V130 and it's great. Great fret job, just needed a bit of a set up. The hardware is all Wilkinson so is top knotch. These are new at around £300 over here in England. Love to see you check them out. It has a satin finish similar to the LP jr, however it apparently has a humbucking P90, mine is super quiet during high gains and would be great for your playing styles.
I have been looking for a platform to put a Bareknuckle Pig 90 into because my Gibson jr tribute just sounds amazing and can’t take the Gibson p90 out. This seems like a very cool option, especially now with the limited silver sparkle finish or their double cut in one of the satin finishes
Epiphone Special 1 with P-90's from "Musician's Friend" in T.V. Yellow is the best $110. I've ever spent on anything ! (I think they are a little more now but, well under $200. and are Stupid good ! That said ,nice review and demo man !
I like H/B guitars, but for just a bit more you can buy an Epiphone LP Jr. I would like to see a comparison video between the two. I know where we stand with the Gibson.$$$
Gibson killer, the tuners hold nicely so only need to put in say a Mojotone Quiet Hot P90 (particularly if you play with higher gain) and while you're at it, the cost of a few coffees more will get you CTS pots (particularity if you want to roll off volume to clean up the sound and/or roll off tone to mimic more of a neck pickup). Job done at fraction of the cost of the Gibson. And if you bang it up a bit, won't matter.
Honestly, even though the tuners and pickup aren't really great, personnally, I would've changed them anyways. It's looks amazing! With Gibson vintage tuners with the white buttons and a Seymour Duncan Antiquity, it's a great Green Day rock machine...since that's what I'm looking for and what Billie Joe uses in his juniors, according to the gear video on youtube
My internet is so fucking trash i had to reload this video about 4 times so i watched a lot of ads. That's pretty much the only way i can contribute to the channel, so i guess i done a good? 😂
Hahahah whoops. Got my AMs and my PMs mixed up... I guess Agufish is just a late night gear channel now 😂
Agufish I watch mostly for commentary/humor and great metal instrumentals.
It's close enough to morning in Australia to count
Done that enough times with work.
Talking about late:
Anyyyyyy Harley Benton Agufish Signature soon...? 😜🎸
I'm ok with that. Gives me something to watch in the evening. Every other guitar gear channel (worth watching) releases in the morning.
Even the dog wasn't a fan of the hum at 10:04. "Aight, I'mma head out".
Get u humbucker hooman

The guy literally did a video using hundreds of dollars worth of parts as sponsored ads (without saying) in the name of a project. Honesty? Bullshit.

I am unreasonably happy about the mention of Green Day here haha.
Kobalt you’re not alone 😊🎸. I was considering getting one but this review made me think otherwise. I think I’d rather get the SC Custom or the SC500
oh hello there! - callie
for 200 smackaroos, that sounds pretty damn impressive!
Just want to say that your playing has improved. Not that it was bad, but most definitely can tell that you have been putting work in!
love the feather stuck on the b string tuning post at 2:48
Great, I’ve heard this demo before but this tone is different

I own one..love it....Although I own several Gibsons which are awesome, this thing is so much fun to play I haven't put it down.
bluefen is the neck slim or on the fatter side?

Sick track for this one. Really like that lick hard panned left channel for intro.
I have one for few months now. It sounds thin and neck is shamefully thin, but hey it works and it's no shame if it gets damaged.
Definitely plan on getting one of these in about a year, love that vintage looking sunburst.

Hey what are those clips you use on the strings at the headstock what are they for and where can I get them? Great vid keep it up.🤘
It's a string dampener, helps with excess string noise when distorted. Most music stores should carry them!

I swear I've heard this demo before... which one was it? Also a sick riff.
Place two washers under the P 90 - raise it a little higher to the strings and the sound is improved .
That is what the pole screws are for.
Keith Goldstein that doesn’t move the magnet coils up which have a dramatic input in a pickup
How would you compare this to the gibson dc jr tribute???
