Are the pots on the Thomann site the exact same ones you used? I want to make sure the shafts will be long enough to come through the wood top. By the way, did you know you should never use an electric drill on a guitar? You should use a hand reamer. The drill could ruin the guitar, I know because I ruined a Gibson that way.
I have the SC version of this, with the same pup. Only mod I've needed was to fit a 3mm shim under the dogear (as there is no adjustment except the pole screws). Height is now at the sweet spot and more output for less effort. Also seems to balance out the sound too (flatter frequency response on an oscilloscope). I have other HB guitars (Teles and LPs) but this is now my "go-to" player.

I fell in love with this little guitar, period. It's lightweight, sexy sounding and just a great modding canvas.
That's what I was thinking. While CTS pots are generally recognised to be "better" than alpha, full sized alpha pots are still decent quality, so I assume the more usable tone control comes from the 50s wiring.
I was thinking the same. If I got one of these guitars I would likely swap the pickup for a Gibson or Seymour Duncan or something... maybe the Lollars, depending on what's easily available. The 50's wiring wasn't to my liking when I tried it on one of my Gibsons, but in this guitar it might be the biggest improvement you can make.
Got the same HB in Benton blue with white pickguard about a year ago. Wonderful guitar for a low price, love it to death, but with a little drawback: after a while of playing I noticed that the guitar picked up much more hum from the surrounding electricity installation than other guitars when used with a higher gain setting on the amp. It seemed to get worse when I touched the strings with a carbon pick. Being an electrical engineer I researched the issue and found a difference in the HB design compared to a regular Junior: the latter has a grounding wire from one of the screwed-in bridge posts to the pickups which the HB version doesn't have. This keeps the strings from having a floating potential versus the pickups which causes the strings to work like antennas. Seems HB took a short cut in manufacturing and didn't mount a wire - when I added it back in, all the extra hum was gone. (Admittedly, it's a P90 so the pickup will still produces some hum naturally.) Small mod but totally worth the effort.
@@stilllifewithguitar184I unfortunately just own one guitar of that style and haven't had the privilege to open the pickup cavity on others. I saw the grounding wire on some YT maintenance video of the original Gibson Junior and figured it might be worth trying (and it helped). If you want to, when changing strings, unscrew the P90 on the HB model and see if there is any wire from the P90 ground going to the bridge within the cavity.
Great video. Sort of proved its a fine guitar stock - no mods necessary. Was very impressed to see it came with alpha pots as standard - I've known guitars 3 times as expensive that didn't use parts of this quality. These harley bentons can't be beat
I’ve got one and can’t justify the cost to mod it as it’s just great as it is I did raise the pups a tad but literally just a tad and this has made the a little brighter 😢but not to glassy. It’s an awesome guitar to play and I’m always surprised who much you can change the tone with the single P90. This loves my Peavey Head and 2X12 stack.
I have this guitar in blue, great little guitar. Mods or not, it rocks and has lots of personality. Looks better with age and plays… as good as the player, without sounding like a Stratocaster or telecaster.
I took mine over to a friends last night and we compared it to my 2011 Gibson gold top 60s tribute with mods (Lollar P90, 50s wired CTS pots, bubble bee caps, ABR1 bridge). The HB won. My stock electronics have perfect function. Most inexpensive guitars have pots that are on or off. I have and have had some nice high end stuff. I am embarrassed by how much I love this guitar. It has an amazing playability that I cannot figure out why. The neck is similar to the Gibson. It just sounds great. I did change the the bridge, but nothing else. Your mods sound great. I would be terrified to change anything else on mine. It sounds so good as is. My 14 year old son who is my never shows interest in my guitars, came down the other day and said “that new guitar sounds better than any of others”
Hi, thanks for your contribution to our guitar world! I too am looking at the Harley Benton DC-Jr guitar, I don't think will go with the pickup change as didn't see (hear) a lot of difference, but tuners are important so I might change from the 15:1 ratio to the locking type 19:1 sold on the Thomann site. Anyway good job and keep a rockin! 😃
The pickup might sound bit brighter due to different value of pot you used for 50s wiring. Very cool sounds overall, though personally I think the wiring change itself would be good just by itself, I am joining the others saying Roswell pickup sounds terrific in comparison to the Lollar. And I am not saying "for the price", cause it can clearly keep up with boutique product, so it's just good
I agree. The wiring and messing with the height and you're there in my opinion. I've decided not to drop hundreds anymore on pickups. Unless they're truly bad. I have a Fralin HB and it's the worst of the HBs I have. If I'm going to buy a new HB I go for Brandonwound. Boutique for Duncan prices.
Cool sounds from such an unexpensive guitar! I'm surprised how good the Roswell PU sounds in comparison to the much more expensive Lollar. In my opinion the modification of the electronics (50s wiring, pots, capacitor) is quite the way to improve the sound of this guitar for a small amount of money. Actually I'm thinking about buying one of these and replacing the P-90 with a PAF to make it a real Rock'n'Roll beast. But that's just my personal taste. On the other hand the clean tones of the P-90 are absolutely awesome. Great video, especially for the comparison!
Great video, man! One can feel your passion for guitars and mods from it. That's always fun! I liked the tone and your playing very much either. To me it seems like the 50s wiring was the largest improvement, the Lollar sounds hotter, probably more responsive as you say, but it's not a large difference IMO, at least not through YT.
Had to sub over this vid. I own the Pelham Blue version, I put a Graph Tech TUSQ XL nut on mine, HB locking tuners, and an SD Antiquity, and am about to put in a 50's wiring kit inspired by what you have done with CTS 500k pots to replace the Alphas, so really stoked, sounds alright already, but I ride my tone and volume like crazy and this seems to be up my alley. Thank you again.
in fact it's so.. today "eco" pu are very good made for the price. Not for all guitars.. but for a lot economic pu is real... My cort stock VTH-59 pu (on Cr250) is beautiful compared to tha (argh) antiquity duncan (400 buck) on my sire L7, for example.
You lucked out with drilling bigger control hole, but you risk chipping the top with a drill. Using a tapered reamer is way safer. The stock pickup didn't sound to bad. The Lollar was more articulate on single note playing though. Very clear sounding. I just ordered the same guitar in Pelham Blue and will probably do the same surgery on mine.
with everything on 10 not a notable difference but the 50s wiring with the lollar after changing volume and tone was great. Perhaps for some people just doing the 50's wiring with the originl pick up would be enough of an upgrade. Great demonstration and how it should be done thanks
Nice 👍. A big difference once you started messing with the volume and tone knobs. If you play with everything set at 10 I can’t hear much difference. Great video thanks
Maybe a switchable wiring schematic could be a good thing, with 2 different caps in the circuit, the tonal options would be a lot greater, there is not much room in the cavity though so a PCB might have to be employed. Are the original pots Alpha's? I thought the tonal range of the Loller pickups was much better, especially at lower settings, they were not muddy like the Roswells.
I am very surprised that the difference between Roswell and Lollar is so small. Lollar is a little more powerful, I think. Have you tried raising Roswell higher? I often see posts in the FB that this significantly improves the performance of the P-90 Roswell.
I really like my HB DC Junior. I shimmed up the pickup and its better than the stock position but it didn't make a noticeable difference vs raising the pole screws to the same height. The only thing I did that made a noticeable difference was replacing the stock bridge. I couldn't get it low enough and I didn't like the way if felt when palm muting. ...and I had a couple high frets that became apparent when I lowed the action that I knocked down. Its a really nice guitar now.
@@60degreelobwedge82 Just wondering, which bridge did you change to? I'm also looking to replace the stock item for the same reason. Any info appreciated!
@@Sosu217 I put a Wilkinson wrap around that is a solid block with a moveable b and g string saddle that I found on Amazon. It's alright. Looks like you pulled the bridge back even farther than I did! Intonation was really sharp I keep adjusting the screws in farther and farther but seems not far enough! But the playability is not as good as it was when the intonation was sharp! Chords do not feel comfortable at the 12th fret but intonation is better.
Hallo, sicher sinnvolle Verbesserungen. awesome dude ! i have this crazy idea to buy this guitar (in the same color or faded cherry with the fat neck) and put a emg p81 pickup with a boost circuit , do you think it will fit ?
Hey, how it going? Did you solder the ground wire from the pickup cavity to the volume pot? I've got an issue after a pickup and pot swap where I've got sound when the input jack is free of the body, but none when the plastic input holster is screwed in.
I can honestly say I do not hear a discernable difference between the stock and the mods. Do I think the mods represent an improvement? Yes... but it is mostly a mental thing much like the placebo effect. I think if you were to A/B this guitar with 20 people in a blind setting, about half would go one way and the other half would like the other. All that being said, I do think the mods are worthwhile because of that placebo effect. The knowledge that you have something you think is far superior is actually a big deal. Look at how many swear by spending silly money on a Gibson when we all know it is not logical.
@@RobMontier-dx2go Hi. The nut was of poor quality, the strings got stuck in several phases. After that I made some changes like a new bone nut (the improvement was really felt) and a vintage wraparound style bridge.
I really hear no significant difference between the pick ups at 10...only with the tone rolled of the lollar retains more high end, could be my ""played too loud for many years""-problem. So for me I am not going the upgrade the pick up on mine. I have the FAT mod by the way different pickup splittable humbucking P90, I always use it in P90 mode. I LOVE THIS GUITAR!!!! I have MIA fenders, gibsons, G&L, strats tele's, baritones, tenors you name it. This is my favourite axe.(i know that hurts). I use it all the time ..Is it the best guitar? no.. but its my most fun guitar and I am tempted to buy this color as a non FAT mod as well..
Which Lollar did you use? I have a high wind on order which is what Colling's puts in their single pickup 290. I tried a friend's 2 pickup 290 with Lollar soapbars and it was brighter than the Roswell although far hotter. I also shimmed up the Roswell and that helped the level and fatten things up a bit. I put a MojoAxe solid compensated stop bar on and that made a big difference. The stock Wilkinson isn't bad but part of these guitars is how the strings couple to the body.
I prefer the sound of the Roswell pickup Changing the brand of capacitor does not change the sound quality. This is ridiculous. Changing the brand of the potentiometers can change their useful life without making noise but the sound is the same. Pure placebo!

The only difference I hear is the lollar has alittle more bright tone more treble so to speak but not that noticeable and maybe just a tad more sustain that's about it as far as output pretty much the same however when you add alittle more high end and sustain it does make a difference in the long run I suppose, I have a harley Benton dc 400 the cheaper sg style guitar sells I put a dragon fire phatt screamer in the bridge ut reads about 15 ohms it's really hot and with 500k pots that are in the guitar already you talk a mean sounding machine its got some thump in it you can feel it but dragonfire pickups are really cheap and sound great I put them in nearly all my guitars I also have a harley benton s620 put a dragonfire phatt pickup in it as well and my harley benton hh 20 tele style guitar yeah the all have dragonfire phatt pickups in them they have a bunch of sustain and kinda more midrange tone just sound great in my opinion and the dragonfire phatt pickups are about 40 us $ so not that much and you can hear the difference for sure if you do use the dragonfire phatt screamer pickup they work best with 500k pots with a capacitor that allows alittle treble bleed I believe mine is orange which I got off Amazon for around 8 $ my harley benton s620 already had the same so I left it in the guitar but you can get a variety of tone by just changing the capacitor without doing anything else you just have to experiment on stuff and when you finally get your tone it gives more drive to play and you come with riffs you would have never thought of kinda like Eddie van halen did he was always chasing tone much like all of us guitar players do I'm still chasing thinking of what to do next in my tone chase, good video though take it easy be safe and rock on my friend
That’s something that everyone has to decide on his own. I think it’s worth it, but maybe the 50s wiring with the stock pickup sounds pretty good as well :)
There is almost no difference. Cheap Chinese pickups are now much better than before. Brands like Roswell, Fleor, Oripure, etc are no different from expensive brands.

I hear the Roswell pickup brighter than Lollar (and I like the Roswell more in these clips).
Great video. Stupid question: Do you think a 7 string modern humbucker (the ones which look like soap bar) would fit in there?
awesome dude ! i have this crazy idea to buy this guitar (in the same color or faded cherry with the fat neck) and put a emg p81 pickup with a boost circuit , do you think it will fit ?
Hey, how it going? Did you solder the ground wire from the pickup cavity to the volume pot? I've got an issue after a pickup and pot swap where I've got sound when the input jack is free of the body, but none when the plastic input holster is screwed in.
Liked the Roswell pickups better. In fact the more reviews I see I like them better again.
I can’t figure out your links. Which Lollar P90 did you get? -Thanks!
Hi,
redir.love/thocf/ynzq65rdjk
that’s one link for all the parts i used :)
Great Video! Very little sonic difference...
Very useful for me.Thanks a lot
Glad I could help you with that :)
Why go to the 500K tone pot?
Vintage Junior's used 250K.
Very interesting. Is there any way of stopping the volume from dropping as the tone is turned to a more bassy sound?
50`s wiring
Why does the tuning always sound off on these Harley Benton demos?
Really making me want to put a dollar p90 in mine now. Do the pots/wiring make more of a difference than just swapping the pickup out?
You can try to do the wiring first, maybe this will already sound pretty good with the stock pickup. You can still put a new pickup in after that :)
His graphite neck did not bother? I would be interested in applying a bone neck, and even a slightly cheaper pickup but better than the stock one 👌
What's wrong with the stock one?
@@RobMontier-dx2go Hi. The nut was of poor quality, the strings got stuck in several phases. After that I made some changes like a new bone nut (the improvement was really felt) and a vintage wraparound style bridge.
❤
Not a big issue, but I think that your cat could have contributed a lot more to this video. I pressed like and subs ribe anyway.
What type of pots did you use linear or audio taper
I used linear pots :)
@@SRguitar thanks
They sound identical
Which Lollar did you use? I have a high wind on order which is what Colling's puts in their single pickup 290. I tried a friend's 2 pickup 290 with Lollar soapbars and it was brighter than the Roswell although far hotter. I also shimmed up the Roswell and that helped the level and fatten things up a bit.
I put a MojoAxe solid compensated stop bar on and that made a big difference. The stock Wilkinson isn't bad but part of these guitars is how the strings couple to the body.
Link to all the parts are in the description :)
they sound the same to me.
thank you
Thanks for watching :)
@@SRguitar thinking of getting one ...to gut out
Go for it 😁
I prefer the sound of the Roswell pickup
Changing the brand of capacitor does not change the sound quality. This is ridiculous.
Changing the brand of the potentiometers can change their useful life without making noise but the sound is the same.
Pure placebo!
What digital audio workstation software do you use????!?
I used Cubase a long time, now I use Logic Pro X
@@SRguitar when you made “how I get my ac/dc sound” what were you using at that time?
In that I used Cubase
@@SRguitar is it hard to use?
@@SRguitar was it cubase pro 11, cubase artist 11, or cubase elements 11?
Also.
thanks a lot for a great video. Just the mods they should be done. lollars always sound great but i will get me a David allen Stray Cat P90.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Your pickup choice sounds good as well :)
out of curiosity, did you get measurements on that route hole? Thanks a lot!
Hi, no I didn’t took measurements, sorry
Warum lineare Pots?
Stock sounds good. Lollar sounds better.
You can't hear much difference in the pickups. That means Roswell sounds good and you've thrown money out the window.
The lollars sound richer in tone
New strings: change the sound too...
Mietzekatze! ;-)
I hear almost no difference for the cost
06:44

Return the Lollar…
I like it :)
All that work and I can't honestly hear any difference
Don’t remove knobs the way he did with a screwdriver. Look out here in YT, you’ll find many proper ways to do so.
Also if you’re going to cut metal with metal scissors, don’t do it over the guitar cavities.
So in a word ,,,save $100 because their is minimal diffrence
That’s something that everyone has to decide on his own. I think it’s worth it, but maybe the 50s wiring with the stock pickup sounds pretty good as well :)
Roswell actually sound better
There is almost no difference. Cheap Chinese pickups are now much better than before. Brands like Roswell, Fleor, Oripure, etc are no different from expensive brands.
pas de différences probantes entre les micros.
Lollar 120 usd vs 10 dolar Roswell, no 12 times better.
Lollards is more melodic less twang
Not much difference 🤷
Too bad the long advertisements made me end this vid and watch something else.
Minimal difference. No need to spend money.
