I understand the feeling! There are some sensitive skin products that sting my skin. Not all, but it's enough to irritate me (emotionally lol). Try to use brands that keep their ingredients to a minimum. Theraplex and Vanicream come to mind.

2 years ago I suffered from my first contact dermatitis experience, so severe my eyes swelled shut. I was able to concluded that I developed an allergy from sleeping on an air mattress for several months. However, just recently my eyelids have become itchy, red, and swollen (not as severe as first experience) and I have no idea what it causing the dermatitis to resurface! Hopefully a patch test will provide answers... Sending strength to everyone who is experiencing contact dermatitis or searching for their cause!

the fact that the product that caused my skin to have a terrible allergy was prescribed by a dermatologist, who refused to do a patch test when I requested... according to her, the cream was "so neutral" that I didn't need to test it out. you can imagine how enraged I am right now.

  • @sherryg1838

Very helpful, I was excited to see this one today. I think I've had both, allergic and irritant. My worst reaction was a few months ago, when I broke out in itchy hives from a natural supplement derived from coconut. Serves me right for listening to the internet! I was prescribed prednisone for that. I had used shampoos and conditioners with fragrance for years, then broke out in red bumps around my eyes. They disappeared immediately when I stopped using the shampoo, etc. Interesting about the preservative in baby wipes, makes me wonder if that's why my daughter cried when I changed her diaper, I just thought she hated lying still. Years later I tried a fragrance free baby wipe, and ouch! One of these days I'd like to get a patch test, but can't afford it at the moment. Thanks again for all the great info!

Y’all, I made the mistake of jumping onto the Skincare craze. I went out and bought the Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser, Neutrogena Alcohol Cleanser, Bio Oil Serum, and the CeraVe moisturizer. My skin just got worse and I went to my doctor and he said they gave me an allergic reaction. I was using them for a month when I noticed my skincare just didn’t get any clearer. So I stopped using them but my skin was still reacting I guess so I just got prescribed for Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream. My doc said it should clear up within 3 days but he said it was good I stopped before I went any more time using the products.

I usually get tiny bumps (that are sometimes itchy, but not red or swollen) whenever I try a new makeup product. Sometimes the reaction is worse than other times. Certain skincare or makeup products don't cause a reaction at all while others cause such a terrible flare up that I swear to never use that product again, then there are certain products that my skin gets used to and I can use with little to no reaction.

Moe Begum Hi, there are plenty of different micellar waters. They are not all the same like sunscreens cleansers etc... I have been using the original by Bioderma for years as I am French. I don't know which one you used but I always use ones with no perfume and I don't leave it on my skin I always rinse it off like any cleanser although some brands say that you can leave it on the skin. French people always rinse it off as we're used to use it for so long. Once I tried the argan oil waterproof micellar water by Garnier which targets sensitive skin BUT realized too late that it's so perfumy and my skin turned crazy in a few min... But hey I guess all products are not for everyone :-)

Hey Dianna. Funny you mention Bioderm and Garner as those are the two brands I used. I used Bioderm (with pink lid) since its all the rage and it made my skin so sore. then I used Garnier and it felt like some threw acid on my face. I had bumpy skin which turned into dry patches and whatever not. Same with make up wipes. And I do wash all of that off with my ever so trusty, long time friend CeraVe face wash.May be my skin couldn't handle it but in the end everyones skin is different.
Im glad it works well for you. My skin is very finicky especially after using accutane 2 years back.

I'm careful to check the ingredient list of wash off products (where MCI is often used) but I've found it in things I didn't think would have it like sunscreens, sheet masks and hand creams. Ugh.

I have gone through so much with my skin the past 3 years with using essential oils and ruining my barrier, then trying skincare to cure without realizing what was going on so I’d over wash, over scrub and used way too many products which led to me breaking my skin down so much that I did finally get contact dermatitis that required antibiotics. I stopped using everything for 6 months but then my skin started getting irritated from dryness or the sun idk...my skin wash looking awesome until that 6th month of not doing anything so I added back in a moisturizer, Purito Unscented Centella. It worked so well. Then I’d have days where my skin would act sensitive with it, but if I didn’t moisturize my skin it would then get itchy so I tried using it only at night. But then mid day my skin would get dry and itchy. I recently added in the Purito Night Cream unscented and it’s been really nice but sometimes it feels like the moisturizer helps, other times my skin feels sensitive, nut without I feel dry and sensitive....I’m just so lost. I don’t want to be added products that irritate, but I don’t want to leave my skin feeling dry and itchy feeling irritated. I don’t wear makeup and if I wash my face it gets irritated so I only use water and a soft cloth.

It's a lot like hair dye you could use it for years then end up having a reaction to it and tea tree oil needs diluting before being put on the skin because it's that strong it'll burn and irritate and should never be used all over the face only as a spot on treatment with a q tip

We see a lot of contact dermatitis in the cosmetology/hair stylist industry. My teacher in cosmetology school developed an allergy to a certain brand of hair color from not wearing gloves while coloring people's hair in the salon. When perms were really big, stylists were getting irritated from that too, and of course bleach for bleaching hair is also our enemy lol. Wearing gloves And being careful is really important for stuff like that.

Something we learned from the turkey hotline was that the skin is designed to stop everything it comes in contact with from entering the tissue. Your just seasoning the skin and the broth. Much like makeup. What we don't understand is how the exterior allergens can be so severe to cause anaphylaxis in some cases. How is that even possible? And we also noticed that whether synthetic or natural items can still have organic proteins that cause allergic reactions. At what temperatures are plant proteins no longer a threat? Nice video.

Now, my hands are just so dry that I get painful cracks. I can't touch any raw fruit or veggies without suffering. I can't touch meat....or get this....chocolate lol. It is just absolutely horrible to suffer with. Also, certain soaps will cause a flair up. I wash my hands a lot during the day because I have my grandbaby around. It just kills me. I have really bad dermatitis on my hands and I know this product has fragrance but it's done wonders for my hands. I bought the gold bond foot cream for my feet and since using it my hands heals. Just yesterday I felt my hands flaring, and I had done a foot peal so I hadn't been using my foot moisturiser. So I put it on my hands and this morning my hands are all good again.
My hands get so bad. Tomatoes are horror to me to cut. when my hands get bad the skin splits and I end up with deep paper cut like injuries all over them. It's so horrible. Gold bond also has a hand cream that is advertised for dermatitis and I'm really interested to see the ingredients. I wonder if it's like the foot cream but without the fragrance. It's hard for me to get hold of because I live in the middle East now but maybe you should look into that
Previously I used to moisturize with a very basic glycerine based fragrance free moisturiser but it didn't do what this foot cream has done.
Now I'm trying to find a solution for my eyes, because I have bad dermatitis there too. But I'm so relieved I found something for my hands. I literally didn't have finger prints before.
I really hope this helps you because I know the horror. Xx

I've been dealing with it for almost 4 weeks now. It goes away and then comes back again especially if I go in the sun. I went hiking and it was a bit hot and the dermititis returned. I got it in my face and my hands. The symptoms are less intense, but it's still a problem 4 weeks later! I will never buy that cream again!😩

I have allergic contact dermatitis. I am allergic to chemical and natural preservatives in skincare products. Potassium Sorbate is one. This is the first one that I look out for but even a product don't contain this one, I still do patch test. More often than not, my skin reacts to the product/s. For a week, I have to bear the itch and rashes on my skin. Its always like that and I really find it hard to have a product that suits my skin. What I have right now is more of baby products: alcohol free, fragrance free and very gentle on the skin.

It is ONLY under and around the corners of my nose though. It dries up and becomes flaky (I already have very dry skin.)I don’t wear any face makeup besides eye makeup. This is very upsetting because I want to protect my skin, but I keep getting the same rash. Any help would be much appreciated!

Can you talk more about the treatment for contact dermatitis? A dermatologist told me that I had contact dermatitis and she prescribed me creams for it, Eucrisa and Elidel cream. The problem is that as soon as I stated using Eucrisa, my skin started to feel more irritated and discoloration patches started appearing on different parts of my skin. I was concerned that maybe it would make my skin condition worse, so I didn't use it much. Then the dermatologist prescribed me Elidel, since I told her that I hadn't been using Eucrisa because it seemed like it was making my skin worse. Elidel pretty much had the same side effects and it made my skin feel extremely hot internally (even though I had washed it off hours ago), which was very uncomfortable and I stopped using the product as a result. I can handle discomfort if a medicine will help me but what frustrated me was the thought that maybe these creams could cause damage to my skin and make my condition worse. Do you recommend using creams like these to treat contact dermatitis? Do they work or are they harmful? How do I know if I'm experiencing normal side effects or if I'm having an allergic reaction to the cream?

Hello Dr Dray. For the last 1.5 weeks, the fingers of my right hand have been red, swollen (esp around the base of the nails) and itchy. Initially it was only my index, middle and ring finger but since last 3 days my thumb and pinky finger also became the same. Initially saw pharmacist, who gave me Calmaline and then Dermaid, neither worked. Then last week Tuesday, GP prescribed Advantan cream and Telfast because he felt it maybe more so because of an allergic reaction from my exercises in parks where I do chin ups on trees or push ups on grass rather than Chillblain. Telfast reduced my itchiness completely the first time I took it but following 3 times I took Telfast it reduced my itchiness once. Advantan did not work at all. Followed up with GP yesterday, he prescribed Cephalexin, took my blood for testing and also conducted swab tests for Covid Toes. Cephalexin has not helped. Now waiting for the results. Any advice could help. Thank you.

Dr. Dray, this video was SO helpful in figuring out why my CeraVe Foaming Face Wash was giving me eyelid contact dermatitis. It has a really similar ingredient to cocamidopropyl betaine, (it's called Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine) and it is also formulated using DMAPA which is what I think was causing my swollen eyes the morning after using it.
I was so confused too, because I started having issues shortly after switching to 3 new products, so I assumed the new ones were the problem. NOPE. It was the CeraVe wash that I had been using for at least a month beforehand.

I was so upset 😥😥 bc I already have extremely sensitive skin and now I can't use the one make-up remover I found 😥😥😥😥 what does anyone recommend as a makeup remover for someone with incredibly dry, psoriasis prone, photosensitive skin?

Is it possible that I am allergic to Squalane and Argan oil?? Because after using them for 2-3 days, I get sandy skin texture all over my face and my area becomes VERY VERY SENSITIVE. Anything and everything I apply to my skin during the reactions stings and makes me feel irritable. Idk what to do, because I haven’t overly exfoliated or done anything to actually irritate my skin. And the only things I added to my skin are the Squalane and Argan oil (from the ordinary). Anyone else have experienced this??

I would take off my ring to let my finger heal (many people told me I was just getting soap trapped under my ring and that was irritating it), and then once healed, I would put my ring back on and the cycle would start all over again. It was horrible. Finally, the jeweler suggested white gold could be the problem and we "upgraded" to a platinum ring and I never had any more problems.

    I have a big dilemma !!!
I guess I am allergic to Niacinamide. Although I only get red when applying on the same routine with some other creams ( for ex the ordinary niacinamide and after La Roche posay toleriane - which is suppose to help with allergies! - I get super red on the cheeks and forehead... although I applied the niacinamide on my chin locally). The same reaction happened with cerave pm alone ( contains niacinamide).
Still, I have another cream - source of nature- and when applied with that, the ordinary niacinamide didn't get me red. I am so confused because I have verified the ingredients and seems ok.
Also, I get very red sometimes from the HA .. only from the ordinary one ( both the cream and the serum).
This is all recent though, the first 2 months of using then were fine.. maybe I got sensitised.

Recently it seems like any time I try to introduce a new product in my skincare routine, I end up with itchy red papules(?). I have sensitive skin and mild rosacea, but these bumps/papules are not the type or same placement as my usual rosacea pattern, which leads me to believe it's some type of allergy or irritation. Unfortunately I haven't narrowed it down. Determining which products disagree with your skin can be challenging enough, but specific ingredients are even more difficult.

So fascinating Dr. Dray. Thank you so so much for this. It seems like almost all Americans are allergic to Poison Ivy. You mention how you need to become sensitized to something in order to develop a allergic contact dermatitis. Can someone become sensitized right away even after a first time exposure? How is that. It seems like if you come into contact with poison Ivy for the first time you are likely to develop an allergic contact dermatitis. So poison ivy is not an irritant that then causes sensitization ? I love your videos!!! Sorry for the rant and many questions! You are so engaging!

    • @DrDrayzday

I never had sensitive skin before until I started using Neutrogena sunscreen. My skin looked like plastic & it was very red. When I consulted a dermatologist, he said it was due to something I was using. Then I realized what has caused me contact dermatitis. I don't know why Neutrogena's sunscreens are so popular 🙄 it has a lot of irritating ingredients that are very harmful for the skin 🤦🏻‍♀️

I had this weird issue these last days, I'm 42 and I have never had an allergic reaction to anything other than sinusitis when around hay. This year for the first time my body had some weird reaction where predominantely my torso and my armpits became full of spots/bumps worse than chickenpox, though I had chickenpox when I was little. The spots became very itchy and the bumps started to get some yellowish fluid, my hands and fingers also has some clear fluid filled bumps, it's very weird. I went to the family doctor she was a bit intrigued, like she hadn't seen anything like it she even called in another doctor for a second opinion, I don't have any bumps or spots on my scalp or face, nor on my upper back, like the oilier parts of the skin weren't affected, I have some on my arms, elbows, legs and buttocks, though much less concentrated as on my torso. She gave me a prescription of bilastine and Deflazacort and fortunately the bumps are becoming smaller flatter and the fluid filled bumps on my fingers are also shrinking in size. I have no idea what triggered this as I haven't changed my eating habbits or anything, fortunately no one else in my family had this, so I don't think it's some viral infection, the doctor also said she doesn't think it's viral.
Could it have been some allergic reaction to an insect bite, perhaps? Have you seen a case similar to this?

I am suffering hypersensitive skin at the moment. My skin extremely burns and sting when I wake up in the morning, wash my face with water only and when I put any skincare products which I have used for ages and never had any problems before. Even with micelle water and anti imperfection from La Roche Posay. Most sensitive are is around eye and eye brown, the driest area is around noise under the lower lip. My skin before was quite strong and never had any sensitive problems before even if I used acid or strong ingredients for the first time. My skin type was dry, and less or not irritated or exposed under the sun for couple hours. Could anyone recommend what I should do, what the routine I should follow and products to use to minimise the hypersensitivity?

Dr Dray, I’ve been searching for answers for a while now. I had an allergic reaction to a product, about a year ago (I didn’t know then there was a name for it) My face hasn’t really recovered since then, and there’s this spot that still gets bumpy and irritated. It kind of comes and goes but it’s there most of the time. I was staring to think I might have developed rosacea or something 😞

I have the same problem! My skin has tiny itchy bumps for months now. I went to the dermatologist and they told me I have rosacea now. But it’s extremely itchy and I believe it’s contact dermatitis.

I enjoyed your video, but I’m puzzled some of your recommended products have hormonal disrupters, such Vanicream sunscreen. Not good to endorse bad chemicals, harsh alcohols and more, even if it is fragrance free. I know it is hard to get clean and green products, due to commercialization, profits etc; but with your field of interest, I was hoping you could suggest some simple, safe and expert skincare.
Thank you and I hope you can bring in more new videos with more input.

Dr. Dray do you think an essential oil diffuser could also potentially cause irritation in the sinuses or lining of the nostrils like it does from settling on the skin?

Jamie Gilmore I'm also guessing they wouldn't be good for pets either. Cats are particularly essential oil sensitive and can get violently ill if exposed to too much.

I honestly don’t know what caused the current rash I have on my neck. I’ve been using benzoyl peroxide as a spot treatment and all of a sudden my jaw and neck are so red and itchy. I can’t even touch it. I switched brands of the spot treatment and it’s still the same. I have been using a lesser percentage of bp so hopefully this helps it go away. I don’t wear fragrance or makeup at all, which is baffling me.

Same happened to me i put benzoyl peroxide all over my face and then i get red bumps that are itchy, burns, dry and having tight feeling in that area and also some white heads over that area. My dermatologist said it's an allergic reaction to the benzoyl peroxide ointment. Now he prescribed me hydrocortisone and an anti-allergic tablets for a week. I am so depressed right now. I hope it will help my problem.

Hi. I've been having watery blisters, rashes, and severe cracked skin around my hands. When i first got dermatitis, it only occured around my two fingers yet manageable because its usually come and go. I know that i'm sensitive with detergent so i've been avoided to touch it directly with bare hands. Then i decided to go for medical attention and the doctor prescribed me the steroid cream and tabs. It was okay after 3 days. But then i dont know what went wrong, the symptoms just rebound even worst and now its all over my both hands. I've been struggling with this for months now. My friend recommended me the sulphur harrogate soap which she used to treat her psoriasis. What do you think? Is there any recommendation to calm down the itch and reduce the blisters? Because i tried almost everything and i'm at lost now. Thanks.

It's possible that a skin product that you have been using for years with no issues and suddenly are, the product could have been reformulated and is different than the one you are used to. I had that issue years ago when I thought I just had dry skin and was using a BuffPuff like crazy on flaky patches on my face. Wow, I made it so bad that I went to a dermatologist for the first time.
