  • I came face to face with a living legend, the NABAL Avocado Tree. This is an excellent historic variety that helped launch the avocado craze in California, which then spread to the rest of the world. This tree is old, but extremely productive. Possibly one of the best tasting avocado varieties available. Join me as I stare slack jawed at this majestic beauty.

    Nabal is a great variety and they are huge! To me they taste very similar to Reed. I love Reed. I have a Nabal tree but its too young to make fruit. I hope it will fruit this coming Spring. I have a few Reed trees. Two of my reed are young and one of my trees is older and it has its first fruit set. Nabal is a tree that should be cherished and I am afraid that it is only going to be harder and harder to find. We have to keep this variety going. Great video AJ

      Yes indeed. I’m trying to graft as much Nabal as I can, just to preserve it and be able to distribute scions and trees in the future. I agree, it should be cherished

    Ola irmao Aj. Love this video, beautiful tree the Nabal! Love to get some grafting wood from that tree that's special. Lot of history there one of the most important aspects to me. Whenever I find trees like that I always try to reproduce them.

    Absolutley love your videos! After your nabal vs Reed avocado taste I ordered 2 of each tree.. I am in Florida and I know they do not do too well in Fl.. but your video convinced me.
    But I love how you tell a bit of history and pass on information! Thank you so much!!

    Cool find. Have you seen anyone successfully (produce fruit) container grow a Nabal? I’ve got my 5 gallon Nabal I bought a couple months ago up potted to a 24” container now. Plan on uppotting it maybe in a year or two to a 36” or 48” box. Don’t have space to put it in the ground.

    • @AJTheGraftMan

      Depends. If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere (Chile, South Africa, Australia, etc.) or anywhere near the equator, then yes it could flower at this time

    We love Reed Avos, Hass are rubbish in comparison

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reed is great yes. Hass are great too, but in most cases they're picked early so they don't reach their peak flavor.

    • @dinahscarlett307
      @dinahscarlett307 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AJTheGraftMan Agreed, we find that Hass is overproduced and often controlled by the Supermarkets where demand drives varieties, picking times, then refrigeration prior to ripening which causes fruit to rot before fully ripening. We love the arrival of Reed, Sharwell, Sheperd etc from local growers, unfortunately commercial growers don;t explore these varieties... again courtesy of the Supermarket giants!

    • @kenzangeobio3054
      @kenzangeobio3054 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shepard is more common in Australia, so is Sharwil. I am curious if you are located in Australia.
      Also, I would agree Hass from most supermarkets is mediocre. I am curious if you have ever tried Hass at optimum maturity from a local tree or farmer's market ?

    • @dinahscarlett307
      @dinahscarlett307 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kenzangeobio3054 Yes we're in Australia. We have eaten Hass from Farmers Markets, but as the Supermarkets push Hass, the markets often have more interesting varieties so Hass are less common there.
