Airavatesvara Temple is a Hindu temple of Dravidian architecture located in the town of Darasuram, near Kumbakonam. This temple, built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century CE is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The stone temple incorporates a chariot structure, and includes major Vedic and Puranic deities such as Indra, Agni, Varuna, Vayu, Brahma, Surya, Vishnu, Saptamtrikas, Durga, Saraswati, Sri devi (Lakshmi), Ganga, Yamuna, Subrahmanya, Ganesha, Kama, Rati and others.Shiva's consort has a dedicated shrine called the Periya Nayaki Amman temple. This is a detached temple situated to the north of the Airavateshvarar temple. This might have been a part of the main temple when the outer courts were complete. At present, parts of the temple such as the gopuram is in ruins, and the main temple and associated shrines stand alone. It has two sun dials namely morning and evening sun dials which can be seen as wheels of the chariot. The temple continues to attract large gatherings of Hindu pilgrims every year during Magha, while some of the images such as those of Durga and Shiva are part of special pujas.
The main mantapa is called Raja Gambira as the elephant draws the chariot. The wheels were put back by the ASI at a later date. The ceiling has a beautiful carving of Shiva and Parvathi inside an open lotus. All the dancing poses of Bharatanatyam are carved in the stone. They are referred to as the Sodasa Upasaras. There is a carving showing the village womenfolk helping in the delivery of another female, who has both her hands on the shoulders of the two ladies, who are pressing their hands and the abdomen of the lady to help her deliver. 'These are very skillful and artistic works of superb style. This may give a glimpse into the social conditions of the past. The stone image of Ravana carrying Kailas is a fine specimen of workmanship. One finds sculptures of Buddha, Bhikshatana, Saraswathi without her Veena, and a sculpture of Ardhanarishvara, Brahma and Surya.
It was during this time that Shaivism took a very drastic step and lord Sarabheshwara would seem to have come into existence. Many reasons have been cited for this incarnation of Lord Shiva. Sarabha has the face of a lion and the body of a bird and has placed on his lap the mighty Lord Narasimha. A mantapa has been specially built for lord Sarabha, and thereafter has been installed in temples.
The paintings on the walls have been repainted during the Nayak periods.

தாராசுரம் ஐராவதேஸ்வரர் கோயில் தமிழ்நாட்டில், கும்பகோணத்திற்கு அருகில் உள்ள தாராசுரம் என்னும் ஊரில் உள்ள ஓர் இந்துக் கோவில் ஆகும். இக்கோவில் இரண்டாம் ராசராசனால் பன்னிரெண்டாம் நூற்றாண்டில் கட்டப்பட்டது. இக்கோவில், கங்கைகொண்ட சோழீஸ்வரர் கோயில், பெருவுடையார் கோயில் ஆகிய மூன்றும் சேர்த்து அழியாத சோழர் பெருங்கோயில்கள் எனப்படுகின்றன.
சோழ மன்னர்களில் 2ம் ராஜராஜனால் கட்டப்பட்ட அழகிய கலைக்கூடம் இக்கோயில். இக்கோயிலைச் சுற்றிலும் ஏராளமான கல்வெட்டுக்கள் உள்ளன. தூண்களில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள சிற்பங்களும், சுவர்களில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள வடிவங்களும், நாட்டிய முத்திரைகளை காட்டி நிற்கும் சிற்பங்களும், தேர் போன்று வடிவிலமைந்த மண்டபமும் என பல அரிய சிற்பக் கலைப் படைப்புக்களை இக்கோயில் கொண்டுள்ளது.
வல்லுனர்களால், "சிற்பிகளின் கனவு" என்று கருதப்படும் இந்த தலம் முழுவதும் மிகவும் நுணுக்கமான சிறிய மற்றும் பெரிய சிற்பங்களால் நிறைந்துள்ளது. வழக்கமான சைவத்தலங்களின் அமைப்பிலிருந்து சற்றே வேறுபட்டுள்ளது. இறைவிக்கென்று தனியே ஒரு கோயில் வலதுபுறம் அமைந்துள்ளது. இது வழக்கமான தலங்களைபோல முதலில் அமையப்பெற்று பின் கால மாற்றத்தில் சுற்றுச்சுவர் மறைந்து தனித்தனி சன்னதிகளாக அமையப்பெற்றிருக்கலாம் என்று ஒரு கூற்று இருந்தாலும், ஆயிரம் வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பே பெண் தெய்வத்துக்கும் சமமாய் ஒரு தனி கோயில் அமைத்திருப்பது இதன் சிறப்பாகும். இக்கோயில் கருவறை விமானம் ஐந்து நிலை மாடங்களுடன் 80 அடி உயரம் உள்ளது. 63 நாயன்மார்களின் சிற்பங்களும் இந்தக் கோயிலில் வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.
நுழைவாயிலில் நந்தியினருகே அமையப்பெற்றிருக்கும் பலி பீடத்தின் படிகள் இசையொலி எழுப்பும் படிகளாக அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. வெவ்வேறு கனங்களிலிருக்கும் இந்த தூண்கள், தட்டும்போது சரிகமபதநீ என்ற சுரங்களைக் கொடுக்கின்றன.
