  • This video shares my thoughts on the must-have tools needed to make junk journals as well as the really-nice-to-have tools. Additionally, I include why I think they’re handy and how they are used. I hope this helps people new to the hobby and maybe offers some additional ideas for people who’ve been working with paper for awhile. Thank you for watching and happy creating.

    This is a must see for anyone interesting in paper crafts. You articulate the pluses & minuses of each tool category which really helps a person understand how to match the tool to their needs. Just an excellent discussion in every way. Thank you!

    Recently I’ve made a couple mini journals that I’ve given as gifts. I’m working on one now, and every time I glue 2 papers together - I think of your laminator tip. So I just ordered one on Amazon and it will be here Wednesday. A story …. A hundred years ago, I wanted to get onto scrapbooking and started one which has sat in a drawer, unfinished . Then a couple months ago when I started making journals, I pulled this old scrapbook project out and all of the glued items had come off, especially those with glue sticks or hot glue. In a few days I’ll have the tool to remedy that problem, along with the fact that I don’t use glue sticks or hot glue anymore. Thanks for sharing a fantastic tip.

    • @CoriDahmen
      @CoriDahmen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sure hope it works long term Deborah! The coming-apart-drying business is one of many reasons I've long stated that glue sticks are for kindergartners. My fingers are crossed that "adult" glue sticks and some heat and pressure change that path. Best wishes and I hope like heck that it works well for you. PSA, I have had laminators "eat" little pieces. They get caught on the rolling wheel and roll around the base, never coming out and breaking the laminator. I HIGHLY encourage you to heat/press little things and very thin or delicate things between a larger copy paper or parchment paper sandwich. It's also a good idea to keep an eye on the back feeder to make sure your pieces come out correctly. Have fun!

    You are a terrific teacher. One thing I just added to my tool box: a $1 glass scraper for my glass mat…less messy to remove glue streaks than baby wipes. Thank you for great info.

      Thank you Susan and very smart! I use my ice scraper and a squirt or two of hand sanitizer.... well, most of the time. Sometimes I go with the quick-and-easy baby wipe, but agree that a scraper is a wonderful tool to have on hand.

    I came with the intention of inserting a question about how to achieve die cuts into your most recent video, but while I was watching, it just so happened that this wonderful video was next in my TH-cam feed. Thank you for another great video. You might know about this, but a lady here on you tube called Ann Melvin Positively Papercraft, in August last year showed how you can laminate only one side of papers, napkins etc, she also showed this being done using Matt Laminating pouches !! Who knew!! It leave the laminated pieces much more pliable than normal laminating, plus she has lots of other ideas of how this them can be incorporated into projects. It’s really quite amazing the other projects she has also discovered using the pouches and some folks might find interesting. Best wishes ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️

    Cori thank you for doing this video. I appreciated your recommendations for basic tools needed. I am an entry level paper crafter. Please take this as a constructive comment. It would be even more helpful to not see four or five of the same tools for someone who can only start with the basic one. In other words, to ask oneself, if you need a tool, which one would you choose to buy? Which one would satisfy the majority of what is needed for that task? I have hesitated so much to get into this hobby because of the perceived amount of stuff one needs. It is quite overwhelming. Besides the equipment the big craze seems to be digitals which add a further expense. I do appreciate the demonstrations that many creators are putting out that make use of recycled materials for things like covers. Thank goodness for those videos. It is undeniable that having all the gadgets and pretty papers, seem to not only make the crafting easier, but the results more appealing. However, I live outside of the U.S. and ordering supplies has become less of an option due to the import fees as well as the additional shipping costs. This hobby sadly is becoming unsustainable for those who do not live in the U.S. or who do not have a large disposable income to work with. That all said, it does not mean that entry level crafters are shut out. In my case, it serves to challenge me to think about ways to decorate and embellish journals using less of the purchased tools such as die cut machines, die cuts, corner rounds, etc. There must be other ways and I will put much more thought into it. I do appreciate the time you have given into discussing and showing the 'stuff'. I am focusing at this point on the ideas shared by experienced crafters in the composition of the journal and the 'how to' of assembling the inside; including, making pockets, tucks, envelopes, etc. The shortages of supplies and cost of materials outside of using recycled goods is something very real that will continue to challenge hobbyists sooner than most of us think.

      Oh, Catherine, please don’t let the plethora of tools and gadgets put you off this amazing craft - there are ways around so many of the processes, like drawing round a small coin and cutting the line, to round corners, and using things you already own for storage and smoothing bubbles out etc! I picked up a plain glass cutting mat from Poundland, which is easily wipeable, just doesn’t have the handy lines - so I measure with a school ruler, or by eye (nothing has to be perfect!). Make a stamp press from a cd case, or a desk tidy from cardboard. Loads of stuff can be found in charity shops (make friends with the staff!). Cori does the most fabulous ideas videos, using inexpensive bits and bobs - please watch some, and you’ll see! On IG, I’m uk_jen if you want some more help, dm me!! Jen💖

    • @CoriDahmen
      @CoriDahmen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Great points Catherine, thank you. I often have people ask about the tools I use and why I use them. Having a list of things you’d like to use or try helps keep your supplies more purposeful and is by no means meant that anyone must have the items I use, rather they are ideas for things that can be used to possibly make creating easier. I was intentional in showing several products that accomplish the same or similar effects. Many of the tools shared are 20+ years old and still work great. Many are still available through pre-owned and second hand sources. Viewers live in different countries and have differing availability of products and brands. Showing several of each type indicates that what you have or have access to will work great. I rarely use tools that are brand specific.

      We’ve had some spring/summery weather, however, it looks as though this season we might be in for storms, rain and wind. The rain is certainly very welcome after many years of drought. Many places are also likely to have flooding if this continues, but we live in an area that will not suffer badly if this occurs. Others are not so fortunate. Hope your onset of winter has not been too drastic and you are enjoying this time of year. 😀💞

    Thank you! There's always something new to learn! I have never heard about that trick with a laminator! I think I have to buy one now! Do you have a brand you recommend?
    As for a bone folder...I can't tell you how much difference an actual Teflon bone folder makes! It's one of those tools you can never do without once you've used one! They are pricey, but worth every penny! They give a tight, crisp fold without cracking the paper, scraping the color layer off of the paper, and without picking up ANY color onto the bone folder!...all while moving like butter over the paper!! I just added two (small & large) WeR Teflon half circle folders for larger folds, like folding your papers in half for journal pages, and I love them!
    Also, thanks for the idea to stain staples! You could even put a touch of the ink on the paper to look like the staple rusted in place there!
    Thanks again for your tips!👍🌞❤

    Thanks so much for this video, Cori! I’ve been journal making for less than a year and have slowly been collecting tools. Great video. You covered everything! I also like to use a paper distressing tool, like the TH one or the (discontinued) Prima one with a handle. This was so much fun to watch! I love tools. Went immediately to my craft room to try Tracy’s circle-to-tab idea and it works great! (I do wish Stampin’ Up would un-retire the whale tail tab punch, though). And I have thought of using my laminator for “ironing” coffee dyed papers, but never thought of using it for pressing out bubbles on backed tags and cards. I’m gonna try that because I really dislike bubbles.
    I make jewelry so I use many of my jewelry tools for paper craft. For instance, a jewelry saw and a bench pin allow for some amazingly intricate fussy cuts, if you’re patient. And I have a circle die tool which will cut a variety of circle sizes into several layers of paper and even has a feature that allows me to cut the circles into donuts; width of the inside holes can be any diameter.
    Thanks for this video, Cori. 😊

    I just found your channel and subscribed after watching a few of the paper folding videos. It was nice to see your favorite supplies. When I started paper crafting I found alot of my quilting supplies worked for paper. I have a weakness for dies too and used a big shot for a few years but switched to the vagabond due to arthritis. I recently started making journals and find the card making supplies work great for that. Over the years I have collected a good amount of supplies that definitely make crafting more fun☺️

    This is completely unrelated to this video but I've been wanting to ask. We make so many journal with tons of writing space but rarely is there a pen loop in the journal. I've seen a few videos were they are done with magnets or deconstructed pen ink refill) and paper so that it's flat and placed in a pocket within the journal. I would LOVE to see your take on it.
