- This is a customer's typewriter that I just finished up for them. The typewriter is in very good cosmetic and mechanical condition, escpecially being 92 years old. All the decals and paint are in great shape. I love the collapsable mechanism that this typewriter has. It still has the purchase sticker in the case which has handwritten,

The purchase sticker is the best thing about this example.
Thanks so much for this. Just bought one in France(with French keyboard). This helps a lot.
Imagine Orwell writing Nineteen Eighty-Four on one of those, and it was already an old model when he published it!
It would've been, yes. Ha! "1984" If only he could've phantom it would from a current perspective.
Oh my they really had it figured out with the slugs folding in
A very neat feature!
Brilliant video. I recently bought a Remington portable typewriter. Would I need to remove the board which the typewriter is attached to find the serial number and how do you remove the reel from the typewriter?
If I recall correctly, the serial number on these typewriters is located on the key-lever comb on the front. So 'no', you don't need to remove the mounting board. I'm not sure what you mean with "reel."
If you're talking about removing the platen, there's a pretty good step by step guide that you can find online. I just googled "Remington portable platen removal" and found a really good site with photos. Written by a woman who has cleaned and restored quite a few typewriters. Sorry I can't give you the website address... I'm not good enough on computers to cut and paste.... Or whatever they call that.
Hold on.... I just went and found it.: So after you search "Remington portable platen removal" , just click on the page with the address: "myoldtypewriter. Com" .
Cool 😎 typewriter
awesome video i enjoyed
Could you please post a video of the Carriage Release mechanism on the right side from the back? I'm trying to replace the lever and I can't find any photos or video showing how this is assembled. It would really help. Thanks!
What did you use to get rid of the oxidation
I fear I don't recall. Usually heavy polishing and fine-grid wet sanding.
Some chrome polish diluted a bit with water is a good safe start.
Brother do u know how many kg is Remington torpedo 15?
Thanks.
Do u suggest that one as I want to buy, how is the quality?
Any idea what size screw hold it to the board?
I'm afraid I don't...although I do recall buying replacements at Home Depot.
so when the serial nr is V141290 - what does it mean? Where can I find out? :-) I would be very happy if you could help me.
What could you tell me about the Silver Reed 813 typewriter? i bought one at goodwill for $5 and no nothing about it.
thx
The Silver Reed 813, is a re-brand from brother. The mechanics inside are pretty much identical to a larger size manual brother form the 1970's. They are not very common, but they do not increase in value because of it, because the typewriter itself is fairly low budget. Regardless, Brother's are durable machines, that do not require a whole lot of maintenance.
thank you. what would you value it at? its clean works great has original case new ribbon.
Mikey And Megen HERE!!! Well, I am going to be careful giving you a direct quote. Value depends from each collector and person. One might value a typewriter for way more or less, than another person would. A typewriter is worth the price somebody is willing to pay for it. It being a plastic typewriter, that is not that old, I would sell it for around $100. But that is to a person who shows direct interest to this machine. Collectors wouldn't pay more than around $10 for it.
thank you. love the videos. great machines
Mikey And Megen HERE!!! Thanks, I am glad you like it. I will be making some typing videos soon. I hope you subscribe.
What price is it ?
Hello doctor. Thank you for the wonderful video.
I just wanted to comment on your machine having right-hand spools on both the rh and left-hand sides.
I own 5 of these Remington portables and all 5 of them have right-hand spools on both sides. I have no idea why...? I'm wondering if something weird was happening at the factory for some of the years of production??
But anyway... I realize that some machines have both "left hand" and "right hand" printed on their spools, which makes everything seem right in the world .. but I've noticed that having a right hand spool on the left side seems to work just fine.. haha.
That's just my experience.
From what I recall, replacement spools were only marked "R" for "Replacement". That's what I've been told. I could be wrong.
Is there anyway to restore the platen surface with soap or other treatment ..vinyl restorer perhaps .. ala automotive type ?
There really isn't. The "solutions" out there are temporary at best. The best permanent solution is new rubber. If you are willing to invest a little money into your machine, I'd highly recommend J.J. Short for service. And they are reasonably priced for the work.

Would you know where to find the serial number on these Remington portables? Thanks
If I recall correctly, underneath.
Agatha Christy used one of thoes to type som of her most famous books
Has the platen been recovered?
Not during my service. But it's too flexible too be 92 years old. Looking at it's current condition I would say it was re-done sometime in the 1960's/1970's.
Nice toy. You're fast
Thank you!
Thank you!
How much do you think these old typewriters are worth?
That completely depends on many factors. Geographical area, make & model, condition, local desire, economic conditions, etc. I've seen these sold for $20, or $300.
And the one you show on the video ?
Whatever someone is willing to pay.
Love who you zoom in on Made in USA. It is VERY important that it is made in usa :D :P
Hitler's favorite!
Some of the worst machines I've ever used.
I wouldn't go that far. They are rather experimental in design.
Compared to what of the era?
