Mark, I found your video through a page on Remington Portables by Richard Polt. I found a Remington Portable #1 at a garage sale, along with a Lettera 32. I got them both for $10. I'm in the process of trying to get my #1 into usable condition. As it turns out, it was made in December of 1920, the serial is: NA 00303. The typewriter and case have all of the hallmarks you noted for being an early production example of this model. Now I hope I can find out why the keys are binding and get it ready for its 99th birthday! Thank you...
I just picked up a Remington portable typewriter today. Yeah I've been trying to figure out how to get the case back on So that I can properly store it with my other typewriters Mine is a bit later than that one that you have
I have an old Remington portable typewriter with the RIght Shift Key & Shift Lock Key originally belonging to my great grandfather with only one exception; my typewriter has the "No 1" key in it, I know that Remington Portables never(generally) had that key back in those days and so I am curious to know more about it. I have not found a similar(exactly) typewriter anywhere, not even in the net. Please share any information about my device by replying to me if possible.
Hello, I don't know how to contact other than on a comment. But I'm thinking, since you have a lot of antique typewriters I thought you might be able to help me here. I just rechieved a Remingon Portable Typewriter. It's either #1 or #2, not sure yet. But I'm having some issues on making it work, so I thought if you had time and interest, that you wanted to help out?
Sorry for this very late answer, but thank you for replying. I know how it works now, but I'm stuck with three keys not working. Can they be fixed somehow?
this had stumped me as well. I've a # 1 also, made in november 1922. its left spool had only the top and not the bottom (disc) which confused me as to how to change the ribbon. fortunately, in Portland, OR there is a shop that services antique typewriters, acetypewriter.com/ . Matt changed my ribbon, air cleaned the dust and straightened out a key...for $5!

Interesting. It looks more modern and stream-lined than the underwood portable (three-bank) of the same period.
William S. Indeed, it is, which is one of the factors that made it so remarkable and quite revolutionary.
I just bought a working, nice conditioned latter #1 (has two shift keys) for $50. A quick questions: Did I get at least a decent deal? Thank you!!
Yes
