Japan is a land of extremes. Situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, this archipelago still bears the scars of a tumultuous birth. This living, volcanic land thrust up from the ocean depths. Its tormented Nature brought forth masterpieces and has swallowed up numerous enigmas.
First of all, we will go to Yonaguni, a little island of 29 square km in the westernmost part of Japan. Shotaro Maja was born and bred here and this remote island holds no secrets for him. His father, a professional diver, discovered an extraordinary underwater site in 1984. He’s totally convinced that it is an archaeological ruin. Now it’s up to Shotaro to solve Yonaguni’s underwater mystery.
Then we will go and discover a little-known and dangerous discipline: the ice climbing, with its best ambassador, Nae Yagi, champion of Japan. Nae is preparing an expedition in the area of Nagano to a risky and unknown climbing site. At 31, Nae is at the peak of her discipline. She has been able to confront her doubts to rise to the top of an extremely demanding sport.
Lastly, we will stretch into the Ondekoza’s daily life. For 46 years it has also been the name of a group of virtuoso musicians; they play the traditional Japanese drums, the taiko. Naoto Kinoshita is the youngest member of this troup living in community. The Ondekoza percussionists are internationally well-known for their talent but also for their athletic conditions. The members of Ondekoza follow a particular life code, the Soga Kuron, a philosophy that combines music and running. Indeed their concerts are real performances that require the same physical and mental effort as a marathon.

We’ve got a diver an ice climber and a drummer.
All in Japan, a land that is a different to the Western World as can be. A wildly wonderful mysterious place (at least for me) I do believe Japan comes closest to visiting another planet. And that is just friggin awesome. So different yet things we share. Amazing. Quest. Somewhere on Earth. Enjoy!

Wow every single one of these japanese is very extreme, dedicated, hardworking people. I cannot do what they do, i cannot swim, dive, climb the ice, run marathon or play taiko, 😅, talk abt intense. Everything seems to be done to perfection w so much care. Unlike in some countries where things are done in a sloppy manner without any attention to detail. The sceneries in the video are so beautiful esp the last part w the taiko guy.

I am not sure why the nice lady is ice climbing with a full rack of gear, ice screws extenders etc. when she is using a top rope. So will not fall very far, let alone need to place protection. Just an observation, that’s all.

Make it harder when you train so that it’s easier when you compete. Same principle the runners use when training with weight ankles.

I've never been to that site, I'm no expert anyway. the father mentions a turtle sculpture at one point, which, unfortunately, it was not filmed for this documentary. it is easily found online & to me it's pretty convincing. while much of the site at least looks like it could have been formed naturally. there are numerous facets that simply scream man made. several sculptures , the turtle being one would have convinced me of this either way however there is an identical monument on the mainland & I've yet to hear the connection made. Japan is riddled with ancient megalithic monuments completely unique their island chain. I mean completely. that turtle is one.
