Approximately 92% of the site in forest that is mostly on sloped land, and despite these harsh conditions, people have been carrying out a composite system of agricultural forestry to sustain their lifestyles while striking a balance between conservation and the effective utilization of the forest.
The workings of this system have fostered the conservation of rare plants and animals that inhabit the forest and farms, beautiful landscapes that include sloping mountains covered in rice terraces, as well as traditional culture such as the religious performance known as Kagura, which brings the mythology and folklore of ancient Japan into modern times.
This composite system of agricultural forestry has been evaluated as a globally important traditional system and was certified as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) in December 2015.
GIAHS (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems) are sites in which culturally important and traditional forms of agriculture, forestry, and fishing (agricultural, forestry, and fishery systems) are carried out. These sites are evaluated and certified by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and under this system, there are currently (as of February 2020) 52 recognized sites in 21 countries worldwide, with 11 of those sites located in Japan.
Special guided tours, [Hidden Gem Journeys] are now available for bookings since April 2022. These tours give participants a deeper insight into the many wonderful aspects of Takachiho Town.

When I watched this video, I was in Hanoi, a big city and stucked with all of troubles in my career. Now, after 4 years, I watched this movie from another view of point. I moved to Sapa - a mountainous area like this, and enjoy the farming life with local people. I am happy, really happy.

    Japan at it's best.
    A globally competitive nation.
    A highly modernized country.
    But, with well preserved heritage.
Rich in culture and with a community close to nature is such a sight.
A tradition passed on to generations.
One that you we may call a modern day Eden!

"We should make our younger generation interested in agriculture"
This is the truest word, nowadays us youngsters would rather work behind the desk because its "easier". Its kinda sad that some of my friends who went to Uni majoring in agriculture work at firms and banks instead. With their knowledge, they can help rural area and make them thrive.

Wow, this was an amazing documentary of a beautiful heritage location I never heard of before! I’m a country girl trying to keep an organic heritage going and finding many of the same challenges , young people who do not want to work the land as myself and those who came before me did. Most want to go to the cities, live on their electronics and turn away from the land. I pray the youth of Japan step up to keep this beautiful heritage.

I expressed interest in agriculture before 2010 and pretty much everyone I worked said, "Don't do it, it's hard work." I do think the farmer profession needs to be more elevated as the job is not simple and they produce the very thing that keeps us healthy while stewarding the land.

A village lifestyle seems simple but very meaningful. Working together and sharing bond people, enhancing the community spirit. The film “Marre” showcase this lifestyle and also the challenges faced with migration to cities. But at the same time there are city dwellers who long for a simple lifestyle close to nature. i am very passionate about farming ever since and it is just sad to know that a lot less of teenagers are interested in agriculture. i’m an agriculture student, and a lot of my classmates have agriculture course as a last resort in our university. they take agriculture since a lot of course they wanted have full slots already. i recall that on the first day of enrollment, i am the only one who enrolled in my major (animal science). i hope more people could appreciate agriculture since it is the backbone of the country. i always wanted to work on a farm in japan and i hope that could happen soon :)
