Tonite my sciatica was so painful, I couldn't even walk or sit or lie down. I actually started to have a panic attack because I couldn't think of what to do. And then I remembered YWA and how Adriene has helped me when I was suffering from so many other ailments. I was sobbing when I put this video on...thankfully, the deep yoga breathing worked to soothe the sobs, as well. I was in so much pain, at first, it was difficult to even lie on the mat. But, I did the poses as best I could. And kept breathing...listening to Adriene's calming voice. By the end, my pain had subsided. I am truly so so grateful for this practice and for Adriene. 🙏🏻

I feel your pain. I think I have powered thru sciatica for a long time, like decades, and never really dealt with it till this flair up. Never had kids but this must be close.
Did a bunch of youtube 'strength and stretches, oh my God, put me back to square one.
Thought of yoga today as I was told to lay of the strengthening. I trust Adrienne not to make this worse.
      Will be trying this today.
It does make you panicky because it is like surviving a bad car crash. Have to mourn who I was before this because even tho everyone says it will go away, it has changed me, profoundly, being in this much pain.

I’m so sorry to hear how radically this pain has impacted you. I’m about to begin yoga therapy sessions for a woman who has been living with sciatica pain for many years and I’m hopeful that I can help her make a difference. Currently she maintains a life with frequent chiropractor visits and remedial massage but she wants to take more control in her life. I will be working with her to see whether movements like these help her and finding out what else is going on in her life that she might be able to change to make a difference.
I came on here to suggest that you might seek out a yoga therapist near you to work with? It’s a bit different from working with other health practitioners because you are more involved in the program and it’s really customised to suit your circumstances. Just a suggestion. There’s more and more of us yoga teachers training in this to deepen the support we can provide to people in pain. All the best.

It's been a while since there have been any posts on this one, but my friend recommended Adriene. Partly for her quirky random little comments and positive vibe, but also for her damn good sessions.
I've been suffering with sciatica for 6 months, sometimes it's been crippling and my unusually upbeat style has been getting a battering. At one point I couldn't even sit on a bar stool!!!
But this workout (and some over the counter painkillers, not gonna lie) have actually started to make a difference. I can get through the day without the painkillers now and my upbeatness is coming back, being able to move about better and walk without pain.
I'm a 45 year old bloke, I cannot bend anything like Adriene and I have "bits" that make some of these exercises a little more restrictive shall we say, Lol. But the spirit and knowledge she brings will get you through no problems.
I recommend this guys, and thank you Adriene.
    Have a great day everyone.
    Nathan 🙏

I know this video is old, and you probably have a lot of comments like this, but this has helped me so much. I have spent the last 3 1/2 years in so much pain, and the only solution I was given was pain medication. It turns out that i have a lot of hyper mobility in my joints, which has caused chronic sciatic pain. I'm only 25, but pain has defined the last few years of my life.
I finally got help after fighting for too long to be taken seriously. No one believed I was in this much pain. I started refusing their pain meds and demanding help. I recently had an MRI confirming what I have been feeling, and I started physical therapy as well as being a candidate for SI injections.
My first therapist did not empathize or realize that I was always in pain, and would not recommend anything other than medication to manage my pain. So, I decided enough was enough, and I found this video. Your video has literally changed my life. I can now manage my pain and have made a 25% improvement with muscle mobility and strength in just 3 months. I am doing great with my new pt and I went for my first run this morning in 3 1/2 years. A few months ago, I had days where I could barely walk. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Hey although you posted this comment a year ago I can't help but say I'm in the exact same situation! I'm 25 and for roughly 5 years i've suffered sciatica after a fall but only recently have I been taken seriously and had an X-Ray and MRI following failed physio etc. I've been through ALL the medications and remain in extreme pain doing daily tasks but yoga does help flex me out and allow me to move more freely for a while without quite so much pain! Finally, I'm awaiting surgery at the end of October after a long road of being fobbed off only to finding out (after 3 years of "treatment") it's two slipped discs trapping my left sciatic nerve. I hope things have picked up for you and all the best of luck with managing your pain!

Interesting. I am also a marathon runner and have been trying to find other marathon runners with this issue as I have chronic glute/leg pain for years and just recently realized it to be Piriformis Syndrome. (This is when the piriformis muscle in the glute is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.) Apparently it is due to a weak piriformis muscle, so I have been doing PT exercises to strengthen it, but what I don't understand is how a stronger piriformis will lessen it's pressure on the static nerve (?). I have never tried acupuncture but I tried dry needling once before the shutdown and I'm not sure it helped at all. It was actually a blessing for me that the Boston Marathon has been moved to Sept. bc I finally qualified but then my symptoms had gotten worse and I couldn't train properly. I'm curious what else runners like you do to help it, and if you run through it or rest? I haven't run for a month now but I think it's probably the best bet.

For anyone reading the comments - I have been through the yoga gambit videos online, beginner classes, I've even tried senior classes (I'm only 39) and everything has been way to intense. I've had really tight hamstrings and low flexibility since I was a kid. This video was still challenging but I still made it through (shaking legs and all). The biggest thing is I didn't feel defeated, embarrassed, or like giving up at any point. This is going to be my morning video for the next 12 month as I work on regaining my body after 4 terrible years of injuries. Thank you Adriene for making this video and bringing your humor into it.

Adriene: Thank you. I've been dealing with a herniated disc for almost two months. It's been severe enough so that I am (still) unable to drive, walk, sit, stand; do much of anything without assistance or constant "speaking" pain. Yesterday afternoon I received epidural steroids and this morning I felt slight improvement. The physical pain hasn't been the worst of it; it's the emotional struggle exhaustion that accompany constant pain and limited activity that have really been getting to me.
The inside of my head and heart have been telling me to return to yoga. I was an avid practitioner for years and had stopped about two years ago for many reasons.
This morning something told me "Google yoga for sciatica" and up popped this video.
I cried half the time from relief, and laughed because you're super funny, which I so appreciate. I had to modify my practice because I'm still deep in recovery, but your encouragement and modifications throughout made it doable. I actually surprised myself. Your flow allowed me to stretch in ways I have not been able to since the onset. This practice was exactly what I was looking for today (and then some) and it marks my first attempt to really put the self back in self care. Thank you for being lovely and for providing this wonderful video. Namaste.

I didn't realize how real this was. I woke this morning and started this video and also read the comments. If it wasn't for you all comments, I probably wouldn't have started the video.

I finished the first pose and immediately started crying uncontrollably from the release i felt. I’ve been dealing with this for about 2/12 years, with a really bad flair up a year ago. Now I can’t go a day at my job without pain that makes it really hard to walk. This video I can tell is going to do so much good and it’s only my first day. Also, she always seems to know what to say right when I start struggling. She’s also really funny in a time where the pain is so hard emotionally.

Thank you. I've dealt with sciatic pain ever since I was in my early 20s. I'm now 42. No one ever believed me since I was younger. I've had so many shots in my bum to "help" the pain, but it hardly ever did. I googled yoga for sciatic pain and found your video. Thank you. I plan to do this every day until the pain subsides.

Omg thank you. I work at a haunted house for Halloween season. My job literally is me jumping off platforms, climbing cages, and chasing people with a chainsaw. I have been in several car accidents and have pretty bad sciatica but I refuse to let that stop me from doing what I love. However during the week my body needs some love after my weekends working. This took my pain away and stretched my body in all the right places. Thank you.

Adrienne my mom is having the worse sciatica pain from a car accident. It has generally gotten worse with time and she has been to pain management had epidural injections. No one has referred her to physical therapy and it blows my mind. I am excited to get her started with yoga as she has never done it but I definitely think it will help. I've been practicing with you for years and love you! I'll keep yall updated with her progress.

K I've tried this practice for a couple days and it's MINDBLOWING: I got up from the mat feeling my body inches taller and even warmer all day and that cow leg stretch is pure bliss.
P.s. today for the first time I've stayed in Shavasana for like twenty minutes, since my youngest kitten felt the urge to knead on my belly during it and eventually fell asleep in my armpit XD

Wow looks line my post was 1 year ago and it has been this long since I have had issues with some sciatic pain in left thigh. I have been painting my kitchen cabinets and have been in some strange positions getting inside the cabinets and obviously I tweaked my lower left back which I have issues with for a long time. Since I have been practicing yoga pretty much daily for the past almost 3 years I very rarely have this issue anymore. Thank you so much for having these awesome classes for any issue that might arise. I feel much more flexible without pain after finishing this practice. Namaste!

Thanks Adrienne for this. 6 months pain, trying all sorts of remedies. Podiatrist said it was because I have one leg longer than the other (£380 for that opinion and orthotics to lift my right leg up) - in passing he mentioned maybe looking for some yoga exercises on TH-cam. Found this. Three days in, much better already! So I guess his advice was worth the money - anyone need some unused orthotics?

Just have to say thank you so much. I started doing yoga with you about 4 years ago. Initially I could do so little and really struggled. Your Thirty days with yoga took me a year as i worked through each one several times until I felt comfortable with the moves. I then joined other yoga classes until I found a couple of yoga teachers whose style of teaching I like. I love your sessions and continue to spend time with you occasionally. I just did this session and it was wonderful to see how much I can now do. Without you I would never have got to this point as a yoga class would have been too too much. You are such a gift to so many people so please keep going and thank you for supporting us and encouraging us. Following this half hour routine , my sciatica has stopped burning. I am leaving my mat down and I may even do it all again later. Blessings and love.

Thank you doesn't begin to say the gratitude for these videos. I recommend your sciatica & back videos to anyone with back pain. In 2021 we took a 12 hour river kayak trip. (I was not in shape for this maiden voyage) My back revolted 2 days later with severe spasm and pain. My leg even jerked in spasm. I missed several days of work with what I called screaming muscle spasms. The pain was incredible and I have a very high pain threshold. Your videos, deep tissue massage, tens unit and medication all in concert got me out of that crisis. I still use these videos to maintain back health. Thank you so much!

I know this video is old, but I really appreciate the way you speak about pain in this video. I'm 24 and have had to deal with sciatica for the last 2 years of my life. Mine is caused from muscle spasms in my back, and even though I am one of the lucky ones in that I don't have pain daily, I still get massive pain every time I sleep on a soft bed or work out too hard. I often feel so frustrated by my pain (so many people have told me that I'm too young to be in pain, which is such a horrible thing to hear) so hearing how you talk about pain in a positive manner really struck me. I be an your 45 min deep stretch every evening and was able to complete the climb. As a bonus, you deep yoga breathing got me back up the trail. Hi Adrienne! This video helps me out a lot. I have sciatica from arthritis in my lower back. I would love to see a video for baristas (maybe even just for people in food service?). My experience however has been after years as a barista I have multiple chronic injuries as a result. In the beginning if I had been aware that stretching opposite to my repetitive motions would have prevented these injuries I would probably be much better off. the things a barista has to deal with is standing for hours at a time, twisting, bending over (milk is stored under the counter), carpel tunnel and what ends up basically being tennis elbow from using the espresso machine. I think you could help a lot of people out with a gentle practice to counter a rough shift.
