  • Today I am going to share with you how to choose the perfect mango as well as how to cut, peel and process them for the best enjoyment! Mangoes are plentiful a couple of times a year, depending on where they hail from. Our store had them for 44 cents each and we thought it was the perfect opportunity to share this with you! Rick used to be stationed in Panama while in the Air Force and he is the one who got me hooked on mangoes. We always have them in the house and eat them on a regular basis. If you have been flummoxed as to how to deal with a mango then I hope you will enjoy tutorial!
    Mangoes are actually in the cashew family and come from the same species of tree as the cashew nut tree. They are mostly grown in Asia, and the Philippines as well as Mexico and South America. There are also several varieties of mango that range from super large green varieties to very small yellow ones. They all range in flavor and sweetness as well as texture. The best ones for eating out of hand are these from Mexico that I am using in the video. Mangoes are a budget friendly tropical fruit that everyone will enjoy!
    They are super healthy and filled with lots of benefits for your body. Everything from cancer preventing antioxidants to enzymes to help your gut flora and digestive system!
    I love to peel and slice my mangoes but you can also criss cross and pop by doing the hedgehog cut. Either way is fine. It just depends on your preference. I am also demonstrating how to use a glass to peel a mango because I saw it and wanted to see if it would work. What do you know? It sure does! With a bit of practice I am pretty sure I can get it in one swipe!
    I love to eat mangoes just by peeling and enjoying them, but they also make a great mango lassie, which is a yogurt drink, as well as a savory mango soup. I will be using these mangoes to make a delicious mango chutney that will be used in a quick dinner video. I know you will love those so keep your eyes peeled for them!
    I hope this was helpful and I hope you learned something!
    Happy Eating!

    I love mango anything! Thanks for showing us how to cut it up. I usually end up chewing the meat off the pit as I don't want to waste any of it. They are delish in a smoothie with yogurt and banana. I don't usually drink alcoholic beverages but I love mango margaritas!

    This is awesome! I bought a mango for the first time this summer. I was so frustrated when I was attempting to cut it because I had no idea there was a pit in it. When I realized there was a pit, I had no idea that it was huge! I vowed tobnever mess with it again but now I have to run out and get some. This makes it look so easy and was so helpful. Thank you!

      Irma is going to miss us. She changed trajectory and will hit the western part of the state. At most we will get some rain and a bit of wind. But not even tropical storm conditions. Thanks for the comment and the concern! We appreciate it!

      If you like peaches, you will like these. Mangoes have a similar texture to sliced canned peaches. They are more tangy with their own unique flavor. Thanks for the comment!

    I've used the glass method a lot. Your mango was a little bit bigger than the glass you used. Try it with a bigger glass and it works great! Best way to cut and peel a mango. 👍 Great video! Thank you - I love mangoes!

But going to do the ROTEL Recipe Tomorrow. Don't have access to Hatch chili living in Mi. I called my mom in Arizona she suggested I use Anaheim. But I didn't grow any this year. I grew Jalapeño, Poblano, Chile Pekin, Banana, and Serrano. So. Had to Special order from a Store 4 pnds. Fresh Anaheim. I hope to pick them up n the morning and start Canning with your recipe. I LOVE Rotel and have NEVER TRIED Canning it, so THANK YOU. LOVE YOU AND KNEEDYHOMESTEADER. ***

    Hi
    This is the first time I’ve purchased mangoes.
    Unfortunately I purchased the mangoes before I saw your video.
    But I actually lucked out and bought the mangoes that had a little give to them.
    Also thanks for the tips on cutting up the mangoes.
    I’m going to make a mango salad, so I’ll try out the tips you mentioned.
    I’ll try to remember to let you know how it turns out.

      Yes. Irma is a big one. Thankfully, she will not be visiting me. She has changed course. Moving further west. The western part of NC will most likely get category 1 conditions and see some flooding. We will only get a bit of rain and maybe some wind, but I don't think much. Thanks for thinking of us! This is one of those times I don't like living on the southeast coast. Hurricanes scare the daylights out of me. Irene was enough for me in 2011!

      No Worries! Irma will hit the western part of NC. She changed trajectory and the most we will probably see is a bit of rain. Maybe a little wind, but nothing more than that. Thanks for the comment and the concern. They are truly appreciated.

    Hi Noreen, you can take a large spoon and scoop out the meat. This can be done after you have scored the meat or left as a whole section. It doesn't leave a lot of fruit in the skin.

  • @brendahere
    @brendahere 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your price beat mine. I got some for .50, the best price I've seen around here. Usually they are over $1. I cut the sides and than cut slice that piece again. I can lay the fruit skin down on the counter and with a little pressure on the knife skin the mango on the counter. It works well. Thanks for sharing

    • @noreenskitchenchannel
      @noreenskitchenchannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could not believe the price. I probably should have gotten more than four. LOL! I could have canned them.

    • @brendahere
      @brendahere 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was planning on drying them, but when I got to cutting them up I decided to can them. I had three that were less ripe and that are still on my counter. We ate one YUM and canned (6 pints) the rest. Since I had room in the canner and extra mango juice (juice from mangos when i was slicing them and extra light syrup) I went through my fruit and found some pears that needed to be used soon. I got two more pints of pears. I'm very interested to see what the flavor is having used the mango juice with the pears. its' hard sometimes to know if THIS is the lowest price and when to buy extras to can.

    I have been getting these delicious silky smooth mangos the past few weeks. A spoon just glides through it like jello. Last trip I picked up more and these are very fibrous and not smooth and not as good. Any ways to tell which ones you’re getting I thought they looked the same?

    are you prepping for Hurricane Irma that's coming your way ???

    • @noreenskitchenchannel
      @noreenskitchenchannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. I am no "prepping" for Hurricane Irma. I am already prepared for emergencies like this. I live a sustainable and self sufficient lifestyle so we are ready for whatever comes our way. What is most important is to always be prepared. We have no need to go to the store for milk and bread and water because we shop in such a way that we always have multiple back up of the items we use regularly. We also always have what we need in the first aid department as well as plenty of batteries for the occasion that the power goes out. Additionally, we are not going to get hit by Irma. It has changed trajectory and is now going to hit the western part of the state. All we will see is a bit of rain and wind but not hurricane conditions thank goodness. Thanks for your comment.
