  • In this video I will show you how to pick a nice, sweet, juicy mango at the grocery store. I will also teach you how to use the mangoes' color and texture to know whether a mango is ripe, and what it's likely going to taste like.
I will also show you how to ripen a mango and how to store a mango for later consumption.
There are hundreds of different kinds of mangoes. So, in this video, we are talking about the most common mango found in American grocery stores - the Tommy Atkins type mango.
Different mangoes will have differnt color patterns and taste profiles, but they all have the same texture clues that tell you when they are ripe.

you can put them with bananas because bananas release a lot of ethylene gas so it helps ripen them faster

Your fruit readiness information is super! (I think if someone is watching me at the grocery store though, they may be entertained and think I’m 🤪, especially when I follow your cantaloupe checks! Love it all and it works!) Thanks!

Only imported mangoes are available where I live (NYC). These are dipped in hot water upon import which robs flavor. On a trip to southern Florida I found out how good a fresh mango tastes. Florida mangoes stay in Florida I suppose.

Yes, some mangoes have a longer shelf life than others, and some are more fragile than others and bruise easily. It really depends on the variety. A general rule of thumb that kind of applies is that the higher the sugar content, the shorter the shelf life. So, that plays a role as well.

I moved to Florida one year ago and have a mango tree. I didn't get any last summer, the birds and squirrels ruined them. How do you know when to pick them? I was SO looking forward to eating them!

    • @FoodChainTV
      @FoodChainTV  หลายเดือนก่อน

Tip: If birds and squirrels are going after your fruit, it's likely they're just thirsty. So, put a bird bath or a baby pool filled with water, or a bucket or something near your fruit trees and they should go drink that water instead of trying to get water from your fruits.
Mangos are ready to eat when they turn from green to their ripe color. Different types of mangoes have different ripe colors. So, you have to figure out what kind of mangos you have, and what color they're supposed to be when ripe.

Mangos at the grocery store in ON look like your green red and yellow, but have huge pits. Yours looked like no pit at all? Is there a special name for ones without pits or is it a time of year thing? These ones with pits I bought 2 days ago, said Elite Products, came from Mexico.

If it's huge, it's probably a Keitt mango. But if they are small (regular mango size), they are possibly a Haden or a Kent mango.

@@FoodChainTV Pit on 1 of 3, was about 2.25" long, oblong, and about 1.25+" thick..going by memory. I'll measure the next ones once they ripen more. Got them in a paper bag cuz sitting out for 2 days didn't seem to soften much at all. Colouring wise they hold promise tho.
That's a beautiful mango tree in your backyard. Helps balance out having to share your yard with a gator at times. No falling asleep beside the pool, eh..Or maybe it's not as bad as the news likes to sensationalize?
      Really like your channel, it's my go-to. 👍 🙏

@@FoodChainTV Finally got into #2of3. Pit is weirder shaped than the first even. Pit is 3.5" long! And 1 7/8 wide and 3/4" thick. There might be some trick to knowing how close to get to slicing close to the pit on each narrow side. Was yours pitless?
They have a very unusual taste, sorta peach-like but slippery like pineapple. Going to try to cut #3 on slight skinny side the way a cashew is shaped.
I peeled these like a potato as per a friend's instruction. After that I almost think the easiest way to eat is like an apple, but very hard to keep a grip on 'em. I still have no idea what kind these are by your description. They look like in your video but have weird sorta clam shaped pits. Full fruit is 4" long, 3 1/8" wide and 2 5/8" thick.
Maybe cashew shaped is not a good comparo. What's odd is how little meat there is on either pit end. Literally only a 1/4".
What does papaya taste like? I'm looking for good potassium and magnesium content but not things that worsen my gout. And grapefruit conflicts with my blood pressure meds. I sure do miss grapefruit 🙁

Put it into a bag with apples, that will ripen it faster.
