- Hi everyone and welcome back to another video. In this video, we talk about what recently happened to us when our RV door lock malfunctioned. The resulting lock out could have been easily avoided by taking a few simple steps we will share in this video. Don't let what happened to us ruin your RV camping experience!

Finished the video and thought I would go out and check ours. Lo and behold, two out of the 3 were loose. Put locktite on them and I'll be religiously checking them. Thanks for the video!!!

Yes this just happened to me- it was a malfunction of the lock. It was night and raining and I didn't have my phone. So thankful to have met my neighbors at the RV park who helped me out! Thanks for your video! 💖 Red
Great information guys! We had this happen to us but fortunately my wife and daughter were inside. Could not open door but did open window. Got home and removed door handle and had to replace.

We have a Newmar Dutch Star and had the same experience...ugh! The locksmith ended up unlocking our Jeep where we had separate keys for the RV. The Jeep keys got locked in the RV, so this was the best option and easier than trying to get into the RV. We now have another set of keys stored in an external hide away box. What a PITA that experience was!
We do have extra sets of keys but the key would not have worked. The lock just would not release the latch. Thanks for watching and the comment.

I once left my RV key at home (5th wheel) and had to tow the rig back as I couldn't even un-hitch it as the landing gear is electric/hydraulic and controls are locked in 2 places inside.
1st thing I did was got on my phone and ordered a keyless entry! Best invention EVER!

Great video. This is something we take for granted even in the car.
As soon as I watched this, while I am now at a campground, I stepped out and found that two out of three screws were loose. Tightened them, but will be getting Loctite on the way home and checking them frequently! Great video and very timely for us! We have a 2020 Bay Star so the door is similar to yours. Thanks for the heads up!

Our new rv actually has access into the RV in the pass through storage! There's a trap door in the bedroom closet. They put it in so your stinky laundry can be kept in storage instead of the RV. It's laundry basket shaped. It's a great idea.

I just installed a keyless lock on our Mallard. It also has a keyed entry as a safe way to enter in case the key fob doesn't work. I tested the keyfob several times before locking it up and going home. We store our RV at a storage facility. Next time I came back I used my key fob however it didn't unlock. Guess where the keys are? Inside of course. Waiting to hear back from a Master Locksmith. Terrible feeling.
I was told by the wrecker driver that came and opened my door on my work truck when I had locked my keys inside that you have to be bonded to carry some of the tools in the lock out kit.
Thanks for the “heads up” Izzy. We have a Newmar Canyon Star with the same door lock. Agreed, RV Door Lock please produce a lock for our MH! Just stored it last week but tomorrow I’ll head over with tools and locktite in hand. We’re leaving for a month’s travel at the end of September and wouldn’t want those issues. Another ☑️ in the super C column.
Yes make sure to check them. Last thing you want is to be locked out!!

It's amazing how many people that get lock out of there camper I am glad I got two doors on mine pluses extra keys hid.
This issue and fire safety have me leaning toward either Super C or pickup/5th wheel toy hauler for multiple exits.

Yep happened to us in VA one day. I ended up just jerking the crap out of the door and it came lose. I also agree on the roadside assistance. We use Escapees. Have not had to use it yet but the reviews are great. Last 1000% agree on RV Locks. Had them on my Thor and they are super nice. Man I hope they have them soon. Good share.
This seems to be a real problem with these Newmar doors. A little loctite would resolve the issue I think. Thanks for watching William.

I have a '21 Baystar - wow, thank you for doing this video
Hi Izzy! Yes, I had the same problem with our Renegade Super C. Our lock is a single key with a keypad. For the first year the outside handle would jam or the keypad would not release the latch. We would use the cab door to get in (as I hide a key for the cab) when it would malfunction and we were always able to open the coach door from the inside. I too found our bolts were loose. I tightened them with locktite, but 2 years later the keypad continues to periodically malfunction. It will work fine for several months and then not work for several days. I have tried readjusting the bolts, lubricating the mechanism, and replace the batteries every 3 months, but it still randomly fails. While we are mentioning locktite, I had many bolts and screws work their way loose in the coach during the first year of travel. I went through and put locktite on every bolt and screw I could. We love our Renegade and the build quality is among the best in the industry, but as you know maintenance and repairs are constant. We go out for 2-6 weeks at a time and it seems there is always a list of small repairs when we get home, not including the ones on the road. I have to say the list is getting smaller and smaller. It only took 3 years :-)
Yes I agree. Imagine if manufacturers put loctite on the bolts. Isn’t that a great idea!!

Yes it happened to me a campground. I cousins get door open. I rattled and rattled the door had someone go to my house to get an spare key and my wife walked up tot he door and opened it! what? I will be checking the screws!! thanks

Thanks for this video, just check our 2019 Canyon Star 3911 and the screws were only finger tight. Removed and blue lock tight.

Our coach door latch broke on the night of a four-day dog show. Thankfully we had the cab doors to go through (Class C) but it was still frustrating, and could have been bad if we had the doors locked. Thank you for your video; I'm glad that I found your channel.

How did you fix it? Last night our deadbolt locked itself. The key won’t go into the lock fully to unlock and on the inside the lever to lock or unlock the deadbolt just turns without disengagement of the deadbolt. Luckily we are a super c so we can use cab doors and we are at home. I figure it’s a loose screw/bolt like Izzy refers to in this video but I gotta get the door open to tighten. I’ve tried to remove the panal on the inside at the door handle but my screen door is obstructing one of the three screws holding it in place.
Currently working a similar issue on our Entegra Vision XL 34 B. The locks are unlocked but the door is shut because the locking mechanism is broken. Most likely the locksmith will have to pry it open like your situation ......
Wife locked herself out of our last rig by accident. Luckily we had friends camping nearby and I returned within the hour. When we traded to our 5th wheel, one of my first upgrades was to an RV Lock. Money well spent.

Can’t happen in the Super C ,you can always get in through the cab ! Yet another plus for the Super C !! This happened to my brother-in-law,but he has a class c and we were able to get in and open it from the inside. Great video Izzy, I will be checking those screws on mine.

Dealing with that at this very moment, and no luck even getting a locksmith yet. I can see myself drilling holes in the lock soon.
Good tips, I just went and checked mine the fasteners were tight. I have the same TriMark handle/lock assembly 030-0900. I have contacted the RVLock company a few times about coming out with a keyless 030-0900, they said "no plans as of yet" That's too bad because that TriMark handle/lock is one of the most popular for Class A and Class C Rigs.
I don’t get RV locks. There is a big market they are missing out on.

Trimark lock adjusted this week from a reputable dealer (only 100 miles from home).. got home and locked out of our Winnebago Meridian again! First time it happened we had a locksmith drill out the lock to access. The New Trimark lock was installed by Winnebago Factory personnel in Forest City, IA (320 miles from home) and re-adjusted after their installation resulted in a lockout while there. Haven't been able to find a correct installation.... extremely frustrating. Someone please invent a replacement for Trimark lock!
We have this happen with our 2013 Keystone Fuzion fifth wheel toy hauler. It happens periodically on both doors. We can’t go outside without the keys.
I locked myself out and the only way in is from my room under my bed where I have my flat screen so I have to get in from the door and don't know how

We had this happen to us. When we were having a deck built for our permanent spot the builder broke the key off in the door and we had to get a locksmith to fix the problem and the builder paid for the locksmith and new key.

Had the same thing May 2019 a Sunday morning at a gas pump in Buffalo Oklahoma.. with some help from locals we were able to pop it open from the bottom by prying up similar to y'all. Funny thing just went out and checked and one was finger loose again..Time for som Blue loctite...

A part broke on our Trimark lock that caused us to be locked in until we went through the cab door on our Class C RV. We replaced the Trimark lock with a keyless entry lock by RVlock.com 3 years ago and haven't had any more door lock problems.

Been locked at twice, brook windows twice to get in, tonight is the third time I've been locked out but had the one window unlocked this time, I need a 3rd new lock but needs to be different manufacturer?? 2014 entegra
Horror story: A friend of mine's camper door lock broke inside into pieces after sundown that would not let the key be turned. She promptly broke off the key. After a three-hour round trip back home for the spare, she promptly broke off that key. Destroying a window/screen finally got her into it for the night, and later a new lockset. Etc.
We just got locked out. So we are going to use your suggestions and tighten those screws!!

We have been locked out of our 2016 Baystar at least 3 times, once at Ocean Lakes ay Myrtle Beach. Luckily the slide window on the drivers side was unlocked. We pushed the picnic table from the site beside us up to the drivers side, i convinced my wife she would be able to climb in and , with my pushing her bottom, she made it inside. (picture 2 senior citizens breaking into a motorhome). We have had door trouble ever since we bought this Newmar,, uugghh.

My lock broke off as we closed it. Luckily we have a class C. Had a lock smith come out to the campground in Wyoming. And opened a front door. Now. We always have the truck key and the RV key when we leave.

Had same issue with our Ventana LE and had it up at the Newmar Service Center for other warranty work as well and they said those screws should be checked on a regular basis to make sure they are secure. One would think for what we pay for these units their doors should work properly all the time!!!! Possibly Super C here as well ?????

We were tailgating last year at the Giant game in our 2019 New Aire. All of us women had our purses in the coach and our keys when our 2 year old granddaughter got locked in.. we were all panicked and them my son noticed that one of the windows next to the couch was not locked which was surprising to me because I always make sure this thing is locked up tight and never open windows anyway. The problem was, no one could fit through the tiny window. Eventually we decided to put her 4 year old cousin through. We kept telling him to get my purse which of course he didn’t know which one as there were like 5. We were laughing thinking they’re just gunna stay in there and polish off the beers. Finally he brought my purse to the window and that saved the day (and us from having to break a window).
We have since traded in the 2019 for a 2020 of the exact same model. This time my husband but spare keys he had made up in a very smart always accessible place (private message me if you need to know where). It has already come in handy as it locked us out when visiting my sister in. My hubby appreciates your video and is going to check out those bolts right away!

Endless RVing So my husband is a season ticket holder or his company is anyway so we always have a parking pass anyway but they charge us $100 on top of the parking pass however people do pull in there and park who have no tickets or passes but honestly I don’t know what the charges for that
Also being that the NFL and baseball are taking a knee we turned in our tickets this year and are not paying for them this year, they’re going to sell them to somebody else for the year and I will never watch another game or tailgate due to their lack of respect for the red white and blue!
Yes sir we've had that happen to us before we had a silver eagle with an automatic air operated door it malfunctioned the only way we could get in we had to pull out the windshield what a pain in the butt

That happened to me too at midnight at an RV park while I was dumping the trash. Red deadbolt latch on inside got bumped when taking out the trash! Wasn't fully thrown but just enough to get it stuck. Luckily I could call Coachnet because my cell phone was in the camper and my friend I was with had hers on her. A locksmith came out and charged me $25 per lock. Counted the side door as two lock's because of the deadbolt. But I got in! Now my keys are on me all the time!!

I had an additional problem. First I got locked out and locked in and figured out the screws were lose. I put locktite on and the screws have stayed in. B U T !!!!!!! I have since had the same problem and the screws are still in. I was locked in and could not get out. So until I discover what the issue is I am keeping a phillips screwdriver up front and leaving a window unlocked.
My latch mechanism froze up once. After fiddling with lube, I simply drilled the lock. It took about five minutes. I took the opportunity to install a new keyless mechanism which I was going to do anyway. No way would I be banging on my rig with a hammer like you locksmith.

Happened to us last year when in WY but got locked inside! Thank goodness we have a class C. Had to buy in lock the lock itself broke. These locks are poor quality and could be dangerous.

RVs can be so finicky. You have to have a bag of tricks to deal with these unsuspecting issues. Yes, thank god your dogs were not in there and you were not away from home yikes!!!
I would train the dogs on how to unlock the door from the inside lol. 😆

Picked up our new to us 21 Allegro Red 33AA and drove it 1600 miles home, when we got home after unloading, the exterior handle seemed to be disengaged from the mechanism. A bit different from yours, found a bolt with a nut backed off making it too loose, tightened that some to remove most of the play. It is better but can still become disengaged from the opening mechanism. Going to call Tiffin for recommendation on fix. Since we are in Idaho going to RedBay is out this year.

I wish MOTORHOMES still had the option for a drivers side door. I know that Newmar has the option for an egress door, but they can’t be opened from the outside. Another way in and out of the RV would be great. (Besides having to squeeze out of a window)

I'm locked out now. My latch is loose, like it is unhooked from inner linkage. How do I get in the mh? My slider is locked.

What do you do if you're locked inside? My SO locked the door outside with the key to keep the door latched then left to see a friend. Is there way to Jimmie the deadbolt to get out? I'm currently stuck inside. I'm good with locks and this one is evading my current skillsets.
Go out the window
He came back and unlocked it! Something is wrong with the lock. When the key was in it locked, the red lock on the inside was able to be flipped to the unlock position. If the key is out, the door cannot be opened from the inside. I even took apart the plate before he got home in hopes of triggering the mechanism by hand, to no avail.

should we really be publicly sharing on: "How To Break In To Our RVs" ?:-?
If someone wants to get into your RV they can do it real easy ( ie. crowbar to the window). No secret here. The point was regarding what happened to our lock and how others can prevent it.

We also have a 2019 Baystar (3419). This happened to us this weekend. It turned out to be a different issue (the outdoor door handle lever was bent). I still wonder if your door lock will actually malfunction in the future because of the issue we had. I found the solution here:

Though, I will stop by the RV on the way home and double-check those screws. Maybe we do have lose screws and that is why the door handle level was not able to make it to the lock.
Very well may be possible your screws are loose. We really want to replace with RV lock when available for our rig.

I am locked out now
It sounds like you had a bad locksmith. I was locked out of our 2020 Winnebago View because of some funny thing Mercedes does when you do something out of sync with the key fob. We were up in Northern Minnesota at 430pm on a Friday. A locksmith came in 10 minutes and in 10 more he had picked the lock just like in the movies. He obviously had a lot of experience and training. No way in hell would I let somebody use a chisel on our $140000 3 month old motorbike. Just my opinion. .
