Acorn to Arabella - Journey of a Wooden Boat - Episode 92: Steaming Planks

  • In the last episode, we broke a plank. No big deal though, as with everything we've come up on in the project, the key is just finding a way forward. So we cut the broken end off of the plank and figured out a way to rig it so that we could steam the ends in and get them close to what they were going to be bending to before we actually fit the plank.
    This process, using a pot of water, burner, some tubing and a length of vacuum seal bag worked fantastically well. Once the plank was warm, we just left the bag in place and just started clamping the plank in place. This way, there was no worries about the plank cooling down as we tried to put it in place after taking it out of a steam box.
    In this episode, Steve and Joe also head out on a road trip to pick up some of the donations we received for our trip to Costa Rica to help out SAILCARGO in February. Thank you again to everyone that donated items and has helped out with this side project. It has been very much appreciated and we can't wait to see how they react to the amount of tools we managed to gather up for them.
    Finally, as promised, we are rounding out our merchandise for the holiday season. We have insulated travel mugs ready (in Black and Silver) as well as some small pins with our logo for smaller dollar item. These are up on our website along with the shirts and the sweatshirts (www.acorntoara.... If you would like your items in time for the holidays, please make sure that you order before December 19th, 2019.
    Thank you all for the support!!

    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    A project like SailCargo is a demonstration of hope that world can be a better place. With the challenges we are about to face as humans we are going to need good will and hope from so many. Cutting our energy abuse in the northern hemisphere is going to be hard. A better place for everyone will mean a good few people will need to come to terms with global reality. Projects like this are addressing an in-balance that should have been corrected long ago and will now have to. Way to go guys. Hurrah.

    About 28 years ago I sailed from Honolulu to the Marshal Islands on a wooden 48' on deck stay'sl scooner. I looked at lots of rarely seen WWII artifacts on some of the isolated atolls. It really brings WWII home to see beached ships, aircraft engines, torpedo bunkers with shell gouges all over them etc.
    I saw lots of Japanese stuff on Jaluit atoll. That one we didn't invade but attacked heavily from sea and air. All the wreckage was Japanese.... I've known lots of WWII vets - great guys the ones I knew!

      Thanks, it's something we need to get looked at but likely going to be closer to the spring. The machine was used hard before we got it and there are likely both leaks and worn O-rings.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Considering that the whole rear sags + the boom + the bucket, the leak is likely in the valve heart. It's a daunting operation, to change stuff in there, but as jobs go (DIY format) it's actually the cheapest. A cylinder has a heck of a lot more going on, plus the potential to bugger it up permanently. The valve block is just that, a valve block.

      If the dude was a member of the unit on his shirt, he is more badass than he will ever tell anyone. As a former marine myself knowing most people aren't going to just wear someone else's unit, i will say that he most likely was a member of the MARSOC Raiders (the unit on his shirt). They are similar to the seals, they operate in teams of like 14 or 15 including a corpsman. Maybe not as hardcore or fantasized about as the seals, but make no mistake, these guys are the last thing you never see if they are looking for you. No better friend, no worse enemy, YUT!

    Great job guys, steaming planks is an art. I'd recommend you try a wallpaper stripper to pour steam via the 3/8" hose to your bag. It is continuous and can be topped up, it's electric and easy to plug and play. It works a treat on my steam box when I steamed oak frames on my classic open day boat, pitch pine on oak, 1965. The class dates 1911- present day. Also another great tip is to use a meat thermometer bi-metallic type to measure temp, it measures at he point and can be put near the wood.

  • @doggedout
    @doggedout 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You know, given how much steam you probably should be doing, it might be a good idea to look around for a tool made for the job. Namely, a used industrial carpet steamer or wall paper remover.
    You could actually build small, reusable drop down boxes to use on the planks. Staple plastic to the bottom and run the steam in one side and out the other. Use them on the major bend areas fore and aft as you do each one.
    Just a suggestion.

    I used the bag steamer on the rails for my boat with great success, but I closed of the end instead of venting it to keep the steam pressure up. I used a wallpaper stripper for the steam. The water condensed in the bag at the low point and, I think, helped keep the temp up. Nice load of gear for the Sailcargo project.

I have just a little Mirror dinghy sitting on my property that’s been waiting about 5 years for me to rebuild lol… you would have done it in a weekend lol 😂 I’m 57 and a bit top old to take on a project like yours but building a small 12 foot wooden boat would give me a very small taste of what it’s like to build a boat in the form of something like you are doing. I love seeing all the wood working skills, the carving the moulding, the fitting it’s amazing. Cheers guys from a very cold central England

    • @Garryck-1
      @Garryck-1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mark Grudt - Because by the time you get a plank out of the box and in position up against the hull, the plank is already cooling down and losing flexibility. By steaming in situ, the plank stays pliable for as long as you need it to.

    I’ve done a lot of casting, you can use the lidl’s for pretty much whatever you want but using the crucible probably isn’t a good idea I’ve had a few crucibles break open on me and or burn through as I would take them out for a poor, I’d go ahead and just buy a clay graphite one off of amazon, you can get pretty good ones for $30-40

    Just a suggestion. Try an induction hot plate. I can vegetables using one to heat a large canner. It is a quick boil, and best of all, it isn't an open flame

    You have mentioned Kira many times and we have seen her once or twice. But have you ever introduced her to the channel? Who is she? A very helpful neighbour? Girlfriend of one of you?

    It looks like the steam will do the trick for those tight twisting bends. It might be that the moisture in the wood is frozen and won't allow the boards to bend in the unheated boat house. Planking is looking good.

    Maybe make an Amazon wish list for sail cargo. So we can order and have stuff shipped directly to you. Or directly to them if it’s an option. If you make the wish list then you’ll know the tools and supplies we send applicable and are quality. Safety supplies, tools, consumables... put a link in the video subscription.

    Guys, I used to ship crates internationally. Many countries require that "Kiln Dried High Temperature" (DKHT) wood is used. Raw wood can contain insect larvae and can cause unwanted infestations like the Chinese originated Emerald Ash Borer Beetle that has devastated forests here in this great nation. Check with your shipper before making your crates as KDHT wood has to be stamped by a designated person (registered with the federal government). Good luck in your shipment and travels.

    Early part of the video: Beautiful, calm early Winter day.The sort of weather when, after a short while of hard work, you can be working in jeans & T shirt and enjoying a few rays of Winter sunshine. (We've had so much rain this Autumn - Winter in the UK. Second heaviest recorded November rainfall since records began.)

      The weather has been kind of crazy here as well. Lots of snow, then lots of rain. Low temps and mid temps... it's been quite the roller coaster.
