There is absolutely NOTHING that can compare with the joy we had on firing it at about 7:30 AM and pulling it out into the sun. We were truly the kings of the street at that moment, we got our asses handed to us in the race but it made no difference to us.

Then, you drive your spike in-between the husk and shell, pull the coconut up and towards yourself, and soon you'll have the hard little nut, ready to open. It takes a pro less than a minute to husk one.
dulcich and freiburger always good for a laugh... in the dominican republic you can see the low-tech version of this...street vendors hold the coconut with the husk on it in one hand and, rotating the coconut 1/4 turn after each blow, they peel the husk off with four hefty stokes of a machete...the husk falls away and the hard coconut shell remains ...they wack the coconut smartly with the machete splitting it in two while deftly hold both halves of the coconut in one hand up right not spilling the milk....finally they hand you the two halves of the coconut, cup fashion, and you drink the milk, everything else is thrown away...they can do this whole operation in about 30 seconds....coconut vendors in the d.r. tend to be named Lucky, or Lefty.

I always buy normal coconuts, take my hands and tear the husk off, then you use a blunt rock and strike the eyes with a fair amount of force at a 45 degree angle and boom you are done.
