Casio A158WA is rated for 30 Meter water resistance, but it can do much more than that. Today we test out the theory of water resistance and what it means. Is it just splash proof or is it more than that?
Thanks to ISO 22810 that is on all modern watches, 30M really means 30M unless the gaskets degrade over time. This Casio took a heck of a lot more than that to finally break.

As a note: ISO22810 is the spec all watches have to meet. Dress watches up to dive watches. It’s designed to address ambiguity of water resistance in ‘watches, so yes, your watch meets those specific depths. Obviously most of us aren’t comfortable trying it, but they are. 🎉
hey man could you do the same test with a timex weekender i dont have faith there build quality will stand up to the 30 m wr rating
Even the vintage ones?
@@yosuhimekawa9053no, also seals will age and deteriorate causing the wr to lower
@@yosuhimekawa9053I think he meant to say all watches that are marked as water resistant (which is a vast majority of them). There are, of course, many watches that aren’t water resistant, or aren’t tested to the ISO spec, but may have some resistance anyway despite not being labeled as such.
Dude... you REALLY have a problem with counting... and with coherence and safety: "the tank is rated for 100m, and I don't want it to explode in my face", then you proceed to go DOUBLE that while putting your eyes super close...
What a champ :D
2:39 you're 40 meters down below trapped and about to run out of oxygen and your casio watch beeps to tell you it's 11 o'clock.
Casio delivers.
No BS, no fancy talk, just down to earth, affordable quality stuff.
Love it.
Couldn't agree more!
I wish more companies were like casio....taking something traditionally luxury and making it available for everyone and super durable.
This video just convinced 100 people to buy a Casio. They owe you commission man!!!!
Yep. Proof that they live up to their God Tier status! I think this gives me confidence to wear mine a little rougher now.
Jokes on you I already own 1😂
101...I'm on the way to the shop now.
Maybe because they are so affordable, but I usually take my Casio swimming instead of my actual dive watches. Never had a problem. 😅😂
😂😂😂😂😂
I'm surprised. I knew it could go the full 30. But 200 is incredible.
I was not expecting it either!
No need to be surprised. It's 30m in real life conditions, such as washing hands and swimming. The resistance of water while you swim puts way more pressure on the watch case than when you just let it sit in a tank like that.
@@philipcooper8297 I doubt very, very much that the most violent swimming movements could account for even one more atmosphere of pressure, not even close...and he went 17 more
Do you have any link or study that says that swimming movements can produce such forces?
@@TheChzoronzon Do you understand hydrodynamics?
@@philipcooper8297 i don't, it would be helpful if you could elaborate.
I had no idea it could go down to such depths below sea level and still function as intended! One of the reason why I will forever trust Casio's brand!
You'd be dead before the watch
@@arpanmahapatra342 I have no plans on going into such depths myself. I just think it's cool that it can resist such high pressure.
@@arpanmahapatra342if you loose casio watch and find it after 10 years it will still have like half the battery. My is still working after 5 years on cheapest battery you can find
@@arpanmahapatra342that’s true as well because it is a quartz watch so it’ll probab outlast us all
friend of mines f91w got it in the screen by a police training paint marker round and survived, the plastic cover was fucked up, but you could still see the watch ticking away
the marker rounds are no joke either, one of them tore straight through the webbing on my hand.
we also found one that had been buried for god knows how long in the dirt in a 10cm deep muddy puddle, only reason we found it was because the fucking alarm went off and we got bollocked for having alarms set 😂
I go surfing in the north sea almost every week and I always wear the same f91w while surfing for at least 7 years now, and it is still going strong.
I use the same, but for mountaineering since 2014 and it still works like day 1.
And people right here saying "I want sea master just for my swimming!" Lol
@@yashrajsrgmI mean I want a seamaster regardless
In Scotland?
@@Unlucky1776 bro 💀 it's your choice anyways. For some people like me, watch is just a tool and if $30 gets me what I want, then why not 🤷♂️
I had casio rated as WR(lowest rating) only, wich means good enough for washing hands only..I used it for swimming for years and never had any issues with it..casio's are capable far more then they claim
As a keen metal detector enthusiast, I've found dozens of wrist watches in the ocean. From $1 to $1800 watches. The ONLY, and I mean literally, the only watches that ever survive the roughest surf conditions are Casio watches. They are unkillable. They can be slammed on rocks, buries meters below sand and tumbled for years and not die. I found one last night with a flat battery, been there at least a few years. I guarantee it'll work with a new battery. lol
Did it work??
yep lmao@@adrian_certified
Does it work?
I have been diving in the Red Sea with exactly that Casio down to 40m. No problems, also years later. I have also dived with a F91W down to the same depths, also no problems. Wish I had the confidence in my other 30m WR watches. It is so confusing to consumers, as dress watches that are 30m WR cannot possibly do that
I'd say that the case material contributes a lot to WR. Its made of resin and the resin compresses under the pressure.
I've been wondering if pushing the buttons at that depth could let some water in. Do you use the buttons at depth?
@@noisepuppetit will let water in for sure. it's just a few o rings that fit around the buttons. at that depth it would unseat, let out the air and not seal again. never operate buttons under water. same goes for water resistance rated physical phone buttons.
reminds me of a video where somebody put their f91w on a cruise ship anchor or fishing net or something at let it go down 100m+. came back fully functional with zero water ingress.
Great video! Thank you for sacrificing a God Tier watch in proof that Casio 30m water resistance over passes its statement. Other fancy and expensive watches that claim 30m you can barely wash your hands with them. You showed this Casio did not just surpassed its WR ratings but also was submerged in water for a long period of time.
Agreed! It was far better than I expected.
If you’re gonna go digital go Casio!!!! Can’t go wrong. We all need at least one digital in the collection.
Agreed!
One?😊
Only one? You need them all!
I have at least 5 digitals 😂
This was an awesome showcase! One watch that comes to mind is the Hamilton khaki king. I own one and never once have ever thought about 50m of water resistance being too little. Then you watch a review of it and that’s on almost all of the negatives list for it. I think crazy water resistance requirements for a watch to be “good” is ridiculous.
I went diving for my yacht mooring while wearing my CASIO - W800H-1AV | Black Digital Watch. I bought it when a guy said this was all he needed when travelling around Australia. The only reason I don't wear it diving anymore is because I had a crazy elevator door in Malaysia, close on my wrist watch and it ripped one of the holes holding the strap spring bar. It could pop out at any time and fall of my wrist now. Best watch I had ever owned.
If it's like G-shocks I opened the back is holds the buzzer so it is not surprising that the buzzer stopped when you removed the back. There is often a tiny spring which makes electrical contact. Excellent video, thanks.
Safe pressure rating on the vintage 30m Casios is definitely deeper than what's stated, and i don't think most other brands have that same degree of reliability. It's as if Casio deliberately overbuilt the resistance. However, i've always thought that digital quartz are inherently more robust; i'm curious as to how analogs like MQ-24 and MTP-1095 (a dress watch) can hold against pressure.
Sony. They lower their specs soo much on paper
I Love this....proof that a $30 watch is better than ridiculously expensive watches. I couldn't fine a direct comparison but thats a greater depth than two Statue of Libertys stacked.
So water resistance is the only metric to judge a watch on?🤣
So the James Cameron deep sea Rolex is the best watch ever made by taht logic 🤡
Holy shit... I bought this same watch a week ago. Little did i know this is some god tier stuff🙌
Good choice!
There's a very good chance the beeping stopped when you removed the back plate, because the back plate contains the speaker. Which just happens to look like a sticker.
I didnt know that, thanx.
@@SidBonkers51 there's a little Golden spring that goes through the movement and kind of pokes out to be able to touch the backplate when it's in place so it could also be a missing or bent spring
It's piezo speaker.
@MarinSperanda I know but most don't so I usually refer to it by just stating that it's a speaker.
This was crazy interesting 😅...been subbed a while, you make some excellent content. This was fun.👌🏾
Appreciate it!
Fantastic video! Excellent work. Great job.
Thanks!
I'm the type of person to take off my G-Shock while washing hands and he's out here simulating scuba diving with one of their cheapest watches, really made me think
Wtf dude, nobody I know takes off their mechanical watches when washing their hands, let alone a G-Shock.
I don t think that every push of the lever equals to 2m as being a constant in this experiment. It may be that with the rising preassure, every lever push would provide less and less additional preassure as the air density inside the glass chamber rises. You should have used an actual gage with sufficient measuring capabilities for your experiment. On the other hand is clear that the little Casio behaved admirably and got well beyond its rating. But i don t think the high depth numbers are accurate in this experiment, unfortunately. I m 90% sure that the rate of preasure increasing per one lever pull is not a constant variable. Good luck!
The caseback is used as the resonator for the piezo (beep), so it has to be assembled for it to work. You can actually delete the beep by putting a piece of tape on the inside of the caseback before reassembly.
Best watch for the money. I've owned many casios, never had one single issue. Good video
“I want to get the watch to break before the tank does” Casio is the best
Beeper requires case back to function. You will probably find beeps will return if you were the replace case back.Great Video, thanks for posting.
I believe the watch stopped beeping because you took off the case back. There is a very thin speaker on the inside of Casio case backs. This is electrified by a small spring that comes out of the movement and connects to the speaker. If the spring is still in the movement (they're very easy to lose) and you put the case back back on, I'm certain the speaker would continue to produce your beep.
I’ve seen stuff like this before and I’d be confident taking any Casio with at least 30m WR swimming. Mostly because they are cheap, I wouldn’t take that risk with any expensive mechanical watch with less than 100m of WR.
That’s pretty incredible. Do it with you explorer now!! Kidding. Great work. Keep it up, sir
Hahaha I’ll get right on that! I’m sure I could explain that to the insurance company!
@@HarrisonElmore No risk if you test it with just the case and crystal. Take the movement and dial out
Got to hand it to Casio! Ive been diving with a Duro for years, no issues. Wouldnt want to do it with my more expensive watches...
Could you try this with the Casio W86? I'm very curious as its basically a modern and better version of the F91 while still keeping that charming movement in addition to the upgraded light
When you think you know casio, it just reminds you it's the opposite. Awesome video man
Great Video!!!
love your videos man!
Thanks!
One of my beater watches is my favorite F91w, after years I still swim with it, fish with it take steaming hot showers and I have never had condensation or water penetration, tough little watch. I have had a ton of 50 meter water resistance watch like armatron fail in a pool or shower.
I just left a comment on another watch video saying that although I own a range of watches, some quite rare and expensive, I often just put on one of my Casio watches because they are great for everyday use and I never stress about them because they are almost indestructible and even if I did damage it, then I can replace it with the cash in my pocket. This video just proves my point but to the extreme!
thanks for this. I just got me a Casio A168W 5 days ago. Nice to know this informaton.
My Casio peeped at the hour mark just seconds before yours and when I heard yours I was preplaxed why my watch peeped twice 😂😂
Interesting video 👍👍
Absolutely tough as nails. I'm never afraid to get my Casio's wet, they're just amazing. ❤
Casio watches are really better than people think. I have a G-Shock solar that has been working for 14 years, I daily wore it for 13 years so far.
I own a 15 year old Riseman, which still charges and syncs perfectly.
Awesome watches.
hi how was the tough solar power? is it still high? or did ypi managed to changed its rechargeable battery?
Apple : *throwing tantrum at 40m*
Casio : 'hey man it's 11 am'
I have similar variant that I used for more than a decade. It was tortured so much that the front was scrapped from bailing in asphalt. now I have my gshock for 6yrs. I mean the way I wore my watch. I only remove it when I take bath. hahaha I do labor work, chemicals, bailing from skate and longboard, swimming, sometime hitting on steel corners when at site. That's the same reason why I prefer casio than an expensive watch that decreases the value if I use it the same way. 😅
This was an awesome watch, thanks!
The only reason the "beep" stopped when u took the back off was because the lil round thing that looks like a sticker on the inside of the case IS the beep "speaker." There is either a spring stickin out the back of the module or a piece of metal connected to the module makes the circuit connection complete
Excellent video
So interesting! Great video
Thanks!
Doing this experiment, near all your expensive gadgets. not only that, without any form of safety equipment! Respect! 😱😱😱
Amazing, i just order this Casio watch today after seeing this video..a lot of value for the money
Agreed! Wildly capable little watch
This would be a cool test to try on a cheap seiko 5 or even better Ali express dive watches
Enjoyed your video, I am wearing that same $20 Casio as I type this. Casio is leaps and bounds better than any other watch brand. It ceases to amaze me. Good demonstration!
So, basically any casio is a diver watch lol. Good video, dude
I'd love to see you test the mrw200h and see how far that can go!
seriously impressive, it outlasted the rated depth of a g-shock!
Impressive test...thanks for the excellent demo!
I wonder if other cheap brands can behave so well like this, like Skmei - 30 m ?
great video bro, you might want to buy a good quality safety googles for similar tests in future.
Interesting video! I was worried about surfing with my Casio. Not anymore
Wow, that is incredible. I had an suspicion that it would go beyond the WR rating but I didn’t think it would be that much.
Now I’m curious if applies to just their resin cases or if the metal cases (A1000 series) would perform similarly.
They are basically the same. This entry level metal casios are made of resin with a special paint on it.
@@willegalvao9109a1000 is fully stainless steel, not chrome-plated resin as a158, a168, etc.
@@willegalvao9109
The A1000 has a metal case, as the OP stated.
Great video very well done. I know why I've been wearing Casio and G-Shock watches for 30 years.
Thank you bhai for this information
wow awsome test
Makes me wonder how much the Casio A1000 can take since the crystal is mineral glass and not resin
One thing to keep in mind is operating the buttons under water, I went into a swimming pool with an F91W a few years ago and the screen fogged up, could've been me fiddling with it underwater or something else, but I don't trust anything less than 50m anymore. Whilst there are people here who have been surfing, diving etc with an F91 or similar, those that break probably just discard it and get a G-Shock or other watch.
Generally you're not supposed to push the buttons/pull the crown on watches while they're underwater.
probably you got a fake one 😅
bought my first cheap casio when i was 10, lady said u'll go to college and still wear it. she was right:) casios are bulletproof
This is good to know as I am getting this watch soon. I'm gonna feel quite safe wearing it in the shower.
One of the best videos on casio I've seen (the other one is Teddy Baltassarre throwing G-SHOCKS out of a helicopter). This is probably the best review on the A158WA-1 without being a review. Awesome video. Great job.
Appreciate it! I found it very interesting!
That's very impressive Engineering there!😮
Hey Harrison, any chance of running a depth test on another Casio--the super cool Red Casio G-Shock G7900A-4 Tide Watch which is rated at 200M. Thanks.
Could you try this with a cheap 30m analogue watch? I'm curious if a push-pull crown can go beyond 30M without breaking!
interesting video. Thanks.
So…I don’t know if it’s universal, but a mechanical engineer once told me that components usually have a designed safety margin of at least around three times the official rating.
So while I wouldn’t expect it I wouldn’t be surprised if the actual failure point of the watch were to be around 90m…
Edit:
Well, I am impressed by that watch.
I wouldn't like to see you stop at 90 m. Which is three times what it was expected to withstand. Very good video thank you very much.
Give the LCD a bit of heat with a lighter so the lcd layers can separate again, should work fine after that.
Cool machine!
As long as I know I can go swimming, long boarding, and surfing with my cheaper Casio watches, then I'm happy with that.
bro risk his face from possible exploding pressure chamber. Just amazing Casio watches
THATS AMAZING
Incredibly dangerous to push the tank that far off its rated for 100m 🙈
And putting his uncovered eyes close to the glass while at it... I was shaking my head all the time, the guy has a real problem with both counting and common sense
Whats that equipment simulating water depths pressure?
Swiss brands 30m WR is literally splash proof. But from your video, Casio 30m WR is truly 30m or more water proof. No wonder I can wear my F91W for 30min laps swimming regularly & wondering why it still functions.
What are you using, exactly, to simulate the pressure? What's the name of the device (brand, model)?
my friend used to swim in salt water with this and it still works
It's not an issue at all, you just need to wash the watch with tap water afterwards.
Great video. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you !
That Casio is savage 😮😮🎉
(late comment) I still have the Seiko5 I was wearing for my first three "fun" dives, hell itlooked like a dive watch😂 B4 the sub people used to dive with Oyster Perpetuals, my divemaster instructor wore a gmt to dive in.
Retail shop says avoid to swim with this watch , but I have no idea about diving and swimming pressure difference.
Nice experiment! It would be cool to try it with a hydro-moded one. Any chance of doing that? :) It can also be an f91w, it has the same water resistance but is a lot cheaper.
Possibly!
I had this watch and i thought it was only splash resistant? never knew it could go to 30 meters or even more!
A lot of watches might surprise you!
20 atm is enormous for this type of chamber... most transparent test chamber not exceed 10atm
Thanks I needed this to know if I can swim to the bottom of my 200m pool and back up without breaking my watch.
Thats amazing, would be cool if you could test different watches :-)
That’s an idea!
What a great test this was it really does chuckle me how watch folk do not even get water splashes on a 30wr watch..ive tons of 30wr watches even a timex weekender ive swam in a pool even sea with theyre fine... shower swimming pool and normal swimming in the sea is fine with a 30m WR WATCH
Agreed! Glad you liked it!
The interesting thing is that being electronic you could easily modify it to make it "without limits", just fill it with petroleum jelly oil.
I tried an oil mod on an F91 but oil leaked out when I pressed the buttons.
When Casio prints WR on its wristwatches, it stands for World Record.
I have heard that because it's a cheap watch the only rate it 30 m because it will cost them more to rate it for a deeper depth even though it's probably possible just never been tested by the QC people.
Modern Watches: Oh no water!!!
$30 Casio: I am happy to go swimming🙂
Im really (good )surprised ! I was in total confidence for 150 feets(5 atm+1) but i never imagine theese astoning performance. For casio vintage ! Personally i just watch hands with Casio vintage no more ! FOR SEE BATH I HAVE mdv 107 and mtd 1053 20 atm certified
is it a special version of the A158 ?
