You absolutely nailed it, I do like the all metal design and the larger thicker stance, but as you rightly said the limited water resistance is a deal breaker, all though I am 95% confident that this watch will be fine in water submersion, as my Casio F-91, and my A-158W is absolutely safe for casual water activities, including snorkeling, I have exposed both of these Casio's to water multiple times, the tight push button to case clearance, and oring seal stainless back offers sufficient water resistance for average water activities. But a minimum 50m or better 100m debt rating would have meant that Casio, put more effort into the case design, and automatically increased the value of the watch definitively. Great video as always, excellent review, all bases covered, let's hope Casio, redesigns this concept with a better water resistant attribute 👍
In the 80s casio had many stainless steel digital watches but i can't name a single one that looked quite like this. Funny enough their water sports watches come closest in therms of styling even though this is not water proof. It's my favourite casio in my collection and i wear it every day. I have modified it to a positive display and an A700 bracelet, it gets me more complements than any other watch i own.

Right?! You would think people live under the sea they way they go on about WR. 50 meters is over 150ft deep! That's more than enough for 99.9% of humans.
Casio's negative displays seem to have drastically gone down in quality in the last few years. I have a G-Shock G-7800-B which I purchased in 2009 that has a very easy to read negative display in most light conditions. The G-7800 series was excellent and I dearly wish Casio would bring them back! I also have a much newer GA-110-LN which I bought in 2019 with a negative display that is much more difficult to read. My first thought might be that it was some change made for battery life or cost, though as my G-7800 has had the same long battery life as most G-Shocks, I have to assume the recent drop in negative digital displays is merely and sadly just Casio cutting corners for the sake of cost.
It depends. I have a Braun BN0106 from 2012 that has a very good one. (Houses a Ventura module). But indeed, most are just disappointing. Personally, I prefer positive ones anyway.
Keep it roughly the same size and sleek styling, add solar and waveceptor, add sapphire, and solid brushed stainless bracelet and I'm in for $500 or under.
I have the a1000m, and I don’t have a problem with the display at all, only when in dark rooms, and you have the illumination for that… I am very happy with the purchase, I did replace the strap for a light Brown leather that really makes the watch pop…
I think the problem is, the F91W is popular because it's so cheap. Making an f91w in metal would increase the price significantly, meaning that casio would lose the main appeal of the model.
Acrylic that can be buffed out vs mineral that might take a bit more to get scratched (but will still almost definitely get scratched at some point), not sure if I think that's an upgrade.
@@betulaobscura probably not a genuine concern for most people. The only issue that would create would be that over time the crystal would be able to take less water pressure.
meh.. fully agree with you. You should try Casio MTP1200 - I did a review on it, but I am just messing around. I wonder what would you say about that watch as a professional reviewer.
I would love to see a digital Casio watch with a steel case, sapphire crystal and 100m WR. Since they dont have them in their catalogue I went with a Casio Edifice EFR-S108D-1AVUEF which has all those specs for under...wait for it...a 100 Euros, and it looks absolutely stunning (Genta-Homage). Maybe a watch for you to present here, Ben? By the way the Edifice is proof that those specs are possible for a very reasonable price.
Oh so close! Still very nice though. The lighter one is my preference, but the MoP seems a bit feminine. Not sure. I’m pretty handy with metal projects and I bet I can get a good brush finish on one, which Casio should’ve opted for.
I know this is an older video, and I watched it several times from when it did come out, I think all your criticism are valid, but you missed one. These modules don't have a universal calendar. Also I would like it if the 12/24 and time setting options be under a setup button like you find in watches like the G Shocks. Just a few additional thoughts. By the way I did purchase the A700 and the watch is great, would just like to see the changes above. Great job as always.
I have held back on buying the Casio 1000 for the same reason you stated about the water resistance being only 30M. I think the price is a bit high also being nearly £100 and I think around £50-£60 would be a fairer price for them. At the price they are at the moment it should have a sapphire crystal and have 50M water resistance. I recently watched your video on the Armitron Rubik you did and I will probably get one. I did however purchase the Armitron analogue/digital "Ridgemont" half the price of the A1000 and it is really an excellent watch for the price. Like you I have already got the Casio A700 and I really enjoy wearing it. Thanks Ben for your review on the A1000.
Just on the basis of looks, these are ice cold. They look stylish and sleek, kinda of vintage inspired rather than vintage looking. Seriously thinking of getting them as soon as price goes down a bit. Thanks for a great review
Definitely not ice cold, but not rubbish either. Cool, then. I dislike the shape of the casing (same with the A158 and A168). If they'd done a metal version of the A700, I'd be throwing my money their way for sure. As it is, I'll keep my resin A700 (which is probably my favourite digital watch since... well... ever).
Once you do a face swap, the A1000m is a pretty excellent watch. The Milanese strap is quite nice and it doesn't pull my arm hairs like every other metal Casio strap I have tried.
I just bought the dark faced casio. As someone who literally has Velma from Scooby doo eyesight, I find the time display perfectly fine in pretty much all conditions other than really dark environments. You'll be absolutely fine in terms of your ability to tell time with this watch if you buy it.
Casio already did this years ago. Meet Casio W-99. Stainless steel case, metal bracelet, illuminator and 5 bar water resistant. It has the same module with casio A-168. Oh they make W-31 too, stainless steel case, metal bracelet, 5 bar WR but lame light, W-31 use the same module with F-91.
you can at max take a shower with them no issue at all. I have a 30$ golden digital illuminator, and I used it under the shower for 3 years. still working.
I think casio deliberately didn’t made it for high water resistance and sapphire glass. Because it will disturb g shock market. Same with their casio high durability series. Still a beautiful watch. Sorry for bad english.
Travis Walker Yeah, i think it’s because their target customer is someone who preferably have an active lifestyle and sapphire glass that is shattered upon high impact is kinda useless. By the way the new edifice slim is really good.
Cool! But as you say needs a few tweaks. I want the black dial w oyster (brushed centre links), non-negative display, and 5+ATM. Sapphire I can live without, as they’d double the price
Negative displays always seem to fail when it comes to legibility (even on decently expensive gshocks), the choice is definitely look over function. Also the casio vintage lineup seems kind of overpriced in general.
Yes you finally did it!! I own the a1000d since Release.. Your Review is pretty on point.. but youre ok with the bracelets? There are the cheapest Things on these watches - you basically only pay for the watch. I d like this one with the "black clutter and unneccecary lettering all over" and of course micro adjust and at least 5atm.. In the end I end up wearing my a163 and w59 more often cause the 1000 is just too 'blingy'.. maybe they should do an all brushed one!? Id prefer that so it doesnt stand out so much. But for casio fans metal case are so damn collectible 😁
I've got the white one. The biggest bugbear for me is the lack of micro adjustment on the bracelet (had to change it). Other than that, I like it. Sapphire would make it better though.
My buddy gave this to me as a gift after we finished out first research paper together. It's the most beautiful watch I own, even though I own some vintage mechanical pieces.
Great video, I'd like to replace the display on my a1000m, with black around a clear time window, which other inexpensive model would be compatible for that, Thank you very much
I bought a A1000m a couple of months back. I just can't get along with it. I wore it for a week and on my wrist it feels like a ladies watch although that may be because I wear a wide range of watches from GShock MTG down to the Lorus titanium field watch. The quality is nice for the price point but I would love to have a full metal Casio AE-1200WH aka Casio royale
A sapphire crystal, and better water resistance, would indeed make this watch a real blinder. I bought both in the end, as the negative display was so bad, and I wanted to swop over to the milanese band.
@@zaccuhree2001 he backstabbed some of his (former) friends like Federico. He tries to hard to convince his viewers that he is some kind of English aristocracy. And I suspect that he has a deal with Squale. If that is indeed the case, than he isn't honest about it in his video's.
I love this new model. Thanks for your review! I just wanted to add that I believe Oceanus is still Casio's nicest line outside of G-Shock. I've got a couple, and the finishing is close to on par with my Grand Seiko pieces.
im in love with Casio and Seiko watches. steel feels like a watch to me. if it's not steel it feel like a toy watch is what i guess im saying. i never understood why a company will put cheap bands and straps on high end watches. can't really say that about Casio watches, because anything is an upgrade from entry level. i would have no problem spending a grand on a good steel high end Casio watch and for sure a Seiko. thanks for the video
As much as I'd like to have metal on a digital Casio, I think I'll still stick to the A700, which is just so classy and easy to wear despite the cheap materials By the way, somehow after 2 months of wear there is not a single scratch on the acrylic glass of the A700, which I consider very impressive. The case does have scratches, but not the glass.
@@kinguin7 honestly, i think you should save your money and buy the A700. Yeah, it's not all stainless steel and the glass is acryllic, but the design is unparalleled (especially in the version with the monochrome dial) and it's extremely comfortable. And it's been serving me fine for a couple of months and I've got no complaints for the price.
@@danilakisliak8954 I think that's what I'm gonna do, if I get one of the two. I figure if I spend more than $35, I might as well throw it at something old and neat from eBay instead.
Recently found a couple of 1990 Casio watches on ebay with round designs and I bought some cheap extras with the same module number for repairs or replacing a module. It gives extra watches that are rebuilt and maybe unique. Those A1000 watches are not for tinkering much. I like the looks any way. Not there yet in my journey or something. If the bracelets are 2 cm then maybe later.
I am so tired feeling about people complaining that her watch doesn’t have a sapphire crystal. Sapphire crystal is much more fragile, it will shatter more easily. Mineral glass Is much better for day-to-day use because you’re not going to shatter your Krystal. Occasional scratch overtime is not that big of a deal. I was to the people to complain about this on dozens of watches…. Any of the others do I have Sapphire?
Wow, on my way to find the first casio for my small wrist just couple days ago. First, I saw TUG video and skipped the part talking about negative display so I almost go with the black one. Then I saw the white one, and after googling and youtubing, I decided to order the white one 7 hours ago. And then finally saw your video and now my heart at peace. I'm intended to wear this watch as a dress watch so wr is none issue for me. A sapphire would be nice but my 300usd SKX013K2 don't have sapphire neither so 🤷 just wonder why this watch suddenly get review by you and TUG just now after nearly a year it released.
I’ve had an A1000M since last Christmas. Interestingly, I have no issues reading the negative display. I think it is a cool watch. I wish mine was more accurate. It gains about .4 seconds a day. Other than that, I’m pretty happy with it.
I wear an A1000 - white mop face, on aftermarket oyster bracelet & I like it. Will buy the collection : gold, negative display, pvd. Each watch will have a different bracelet, NATO or leather strap.
This is a digital beauty! I love the stainless Steel case that wears beautifully and got one for £62 from a reputable jeweller on sale, so we'll pleased with it! I think I would still pay the rrp for one, though, if looking for it as its really that good! My only gripe is the 3 bar waterproof? Now if it had 10 bar this would be a fantastic digital watch!
If they would have equipped the watch with a sapphire glass,a better bracelet it would have cost more in the two hundred dollars mark. And then they would be missing the customer group they've been aiming for. People who shop for 70' style watches from casio! But you're right,a dial you can't read is a no go!!! But a quick release bracelet and beautiful polished center links , that's a nice extra! So I think they've done everything right here.
i have been wearing this watch for a month or two. to me this is not a cash grab. i wanted a digital in stainless and that's what i got. casio makes molded resin watches by the millions, but (saying this as a toolmaker, so yeah i am an expert) even if you do powdered metallurgy and get a near net size part, you still have to polish, grind, and drill for finish and the holes for the buttons. this is expensive (compared to spitting out a case from a resin mold) and requires dedicated machine tools which cost 300 bux an hour just sitting on the plant floor. and then on top of that, you need to make the jigs and fixtures so you can get a case on spec every time (because using metrology to reject parts is expensive). this case is different from every casio case i've seen, especially with the recessed buttons. so this is either from very old drawings from the 80s or it's new drawings altogether. so no, this isn't a cash grab. i am quite impressed with the fit and finish of what they've created for not a lot of money. i had been researching watches for months with a budget of 800 bux and looked at watch porn all the while. that came in handy because a tech i know is getting married and wanted to get her husband a watch, something special, and without skipping a beat i said "get him a grand seiko. it has tech in it that is unlike any other watchmaker." with a budget of 800 us, i'm happy with my grey market casio at 120. i'm waiting for the patents on the current-gen grand seiko to expire so i can get a chinese clone in the future. i so much love the current generation but they are way out of my now and future budget.
Check prices of other SS case watches among analog ones and those are significantly lower, what points on real selfcost by materials and work. China made SS straps cost a few too. In 150 price the selfcost should be
It's been a while since this was released, I wonder, is there a plan for an updated version with sapphire glass, a solid bracelet, and maybe better water resistance? Alternatively similar pieces from other brands? I currently have a basic A168WE, but after 5-ish years, the resin case is really showing wear on all edges and corners. It's fine though, I like the "worn" look, but wonder if I could get a more premium one with the same design language.

is it possible to buy the milanese strap (aka mesh) to replace the bracelet?? Does it have to be specially designed to this one or those regular ones will work as well?
I have a Casio A1000 and am surprised that the light only comes from this small lamp that sits in the left corner. My cheap Casio with a resin case has this modern blue LED light where you can't see a lightbulb. Why does a more expensive watch have the worse light?
I think they are cool, but I would go (and actually did) a different approach: for the 80-90 pounds I would grab the F91W for the sake of having a digital watch with functionalities for daily use and then an analog more dressy watch for an additional daily or more formal occasions. I can't really justify the price of A1000 when the trusty F91W has basically the same functionality for a tenth of a price.
IMHO, the materials on a watch matter a lot. Watches are jewelry. However, this steel Casio watch just isn't quirky enough. And the dim display just kills the premium feel that the watch is going for. IMHO, the all metal G Shock is a more successful proposition.
@@user-xg6zz8qs3q I'm aware that materials matter, it's just that I think digital watches are better suited for causal/sports/working use rather than formal use, so I don't mind lesser quality materials. I just use a different watch made with more luxury-ish materials for formal occasions. I can't speak for people looking for an all around watch that would do all because I'm far beyond this point :D

I love these watches, they have such a retro future look to them! I ordered the white one from Amazon for about £55.
Ordered it for £59 from Amazon as well before the price went up. How is it?
I have the silver "women's" version. It's awesome. Pure class and definitely unisex
Just ordered the casio a1000def white pearl your videos have helped me have an appreciation for casio watches my g
Keep it roughly the same size and sleek styling, add solar and waveceptor, add sapphire, and solid brushed stainless bracelet and I'm in for $500 or under.
And WR, at least 10bar.
And a timer.
I have the a1000m, and I don’t have a problem with the display at all, only when in dark rooms, and you have the illumination for that… I am very happy with the purchase, I did replace the strap for a light Brown leather that really makes the watch pop…
How hard is to make a F91W in METAL that is what we want 1:1 but in metal.
THIS. THANK YOU.
They somewhat did it back then, the Casio Marlin series
I think the problem is, the F91W is popular because it's so cheap. Making an f91w in metal would increase the price significantly, meaning that casio would lose the main appeal of the model.
This is a F-91W in metal
@@traviswalker8933 he said a 1:1 copy in metal. This watch has different dimensions and a slightly different design despite being similar.
They look brilliant, nice to finally see the steel casing! I just dont think i could justify the £70 for these
Acrylic that can be buffed out vs mineral that might take a bit more to get scratched (but will still almost definitely get scratched at some point), not sure if I think that's an upgrade.
Every buffing make your acrylic surface thinner.
I wonder if Casio used this to ‘test the market’? They’ve come out with a full steel version of the G-Shock 5600 now.
Prices won't go down. If you still want to buy it - grab one while you can!
Going to order the A1000M despite what had been said about the display. Seems that this watch looks much better IRL than on promo materials.
Well, Is it better?
@@Sydow93 Definitely.
Definitely not ice cold, but not rubbish either. Cool, then.
I dislike the shape of the casing (same with the A158 and A168). If they'd done a metal version of the A700, I'd be throwing my money their way for sure. As it is, I'll keep my resin A700 (which is probably my favourite digital watch since... well... ever).
I agree!
Ben, why doesn't Casio include timers in these models? I do not understand it at all!
Once you do a face swap, the A1000m is a pretty excellent watch. The Milanese strap is quite nice and it doesn't pull my arm hairs like every other metal Casio strap I have tried.
Waiting on mine now , ordered it Saturday, I went with the white positive display 👍🏻
Knew just from the title and thumbnail I'd have to give one of these a go
I just bought the dark faced casio.
That water resistance rating is a no-go. They missed the mark on this one. Uncool.
you can at max take a shower with them no issue at all. I have a 30$ golden digital illuminator, and I used it under the shower for 3 years. still working.
I was swimming in mine for 6 month and it was no problem at all and is none to this day
I think casio deliberately didn’t made it for high water resistance and sapphire glass.
Because it will disturb g shock market.
Same with their casio high durability series.
Still a beautiful watch.
Sorry for bad english.
Even mainstream G-Shocks don't have Sapphire glass. That is reserved for higher end Oceanus, Master of G and Edifice watches.
Travis Walker
Yeah, i think it’s because their target customer is someone who preferably have an active lifestyle and sapphire glass that is shattered upon high impact is kinda useless.
By the way the new edifice slim is really good.
Ben uploaded, today is a good day
Brother on online it does not look the same, im talking about the black one.
Great review! I agree, this watch with positive display and brushed bracelet, and a flat dark dial would be killer and sell like crazy.
Which version of it?
He may have but I don't watch Urban Gentry...I enjoy your reviews 3
Me neither. I can't stand the guy.
@@MrPleers why is that? I find his stuff really enjoyable
As much as I'd like to have metal on a digital Casio, I think I'll still stick to the A700, which is just so classy and easy to wear despite the cheap materials
By the way, somehow after 2 months of wear there is not a single scratch on the acrylic glass of the A700, which I consider very impressive. The case does have scratches, but not the glass.
I've been kinda on the fence between an A1000 and A700.
The 700 is so sleek...
The negative displays don't deserve to be called "display".
They're hideaways instead.
Legibility rating: MINUS 5.
This should have had the B640's movement on it... Complete date, countdown timer, it would give it a nice upgrade.
I would like to get a158 with sapphire and stainless steel case. Without size increase or design change.
Keep waiting mate
I'd say it's pretty cool. I quite dig the black mother of pearl.
Keep pushing good stuff like this! I love your content.
Way, WAY better "retro designs" from Casio, and *priced appropriately!* (As opposed to the Timex Qs!)
I’ve had an A1000M since last Christmas.
Interestingly, I have no issues reading the negative display.
I think it is a cool watch.
I wish mine was more accurate. It gains about .4 seconds a day.
Other than that, I’m pretty happy with it.
You should check out the new gold and brown version. looking much better than the mother and pearl ones. Thinking about buying one.
I wear an A1000 - white mop face, on aftermarket oyster bracelet & I like it. Will buy the collection : gold, negative display, pvd. Each watch will have a different bracelet, NATO or leather strap.
I got the Gold A700, I didn’t know I’ll love it so much
Great review as always !! I like the a168 and a158
This is a digital beauty!
I love the mother of pearl detail, what an unexpected idea for a digital watch. This is a cool watch.
Yeah it's an aesthetic combo. I like that it's muted.
IMO the perfect lux digital watch would be a a metal cased a700 with sapphire crystal and the a1000's clean bezel
I'll echo what others have said. Don't worry what Tristano does. You've got a unique perspective that I, and a lot of others, enjoy. Cheers mate!
To be honest, I even like the A1000GR versions, including the one with the pink Mother-of-pearl face.
i have been wearing this watch for a month or two. to me this is not a cash grab. i wanted a digital in stainless and that's what i got. casio makes molded resin watches by the millions, but (saying this as a toolmaker, so yeah i am an expert) even if you do powdered metallurgy and get a near net size part, you still have to polish, grind, and drill for finish and the holes for the buttons. this is expensive (compared to spitting out a case from a resin mold) and requires dedicated machine tools which cost 300 bux an hour just sitting on the plant floor. and then on top of that, you need to make the jigs and fixtures so you can get a case on spec every time (because using metrology to reject parts is expensive).
this case is different from every casio case i've seen, especially with the recessed buttons. so this is either from very old drawings from the 80s or it's new drawings altogether.
so no, this isn't a cash grab. i am quite impressed with the fit and finish of what they've created for not a lot of money. i had been researching watches for months with a budget of 800 bux and looked at watch porn all the while. that came in handy because a tech i know is getting married and wanted to get her husband a watch, something special, and without skipping a beat i said "get him a grand seiko. it has tech in it that is unlike any other watchmaker."
with a budget of 800 us, i'm happy with my grey market casio at 120.
i'm waiting for the patents on the current-gen grand seiko to expire so i can get a chinese clone in the future. i so much love the current generation but they are way out of my now and future budget.
Check prices of other SS case watches among analog ones and those are significantly lower, what points on real selfcost by materials and work. China made SS straps cost a few too. In 150 price the selfcost should be
A1000D looks really good👍
It's been a while since this was released, I wonder, is there a plan for an updated version with sapphire glass, a solid bracelet, and maybe better water resistance? Alternatively similar pieces from other brands? I currently have a basic A168WE, but after 5-ish years, the resin case is really showing wear on all edges and corners. It's fine though, I like the "worn" look, but wonder if I could get a more premium one with the same design language.
These watches are very classy meaning u can dress up or dress down in them. Great design

Hi. Could you recommend which digital stainless steel watch you like the most ?
Hi! Could we swap A1000's bracelet to A168? Thanx
Could you do a review of the A1000 black version? There's a full black version out for I guess a few months now. Couldn't find any review for it.
Not the best, but still cool. Hopefully future versions will get better
one alarm and no countdown timer? C'mon man!
is it possible to buy the milanese strap (aka mesh) to replace the bracelet??

@@user-xg6zz8qs3q even if I wanted to throw rolex kind of money on a watch i wouldn't buy a rolex, i don't like the designs and that date magnifier thingy just feels like it's there for the old rich people who can't see small things without their reading glasses. Regarding the seiko: I don't like automatic movements because you have to wear them for them to work, so when they stop the date just gets messed up. I'm rocking a bunch of quartzes and dateless Russian watches (in abundance here in Poland) that are hand wound. Just wind it for a minute and it goes on for a day, while automatics just get a few hours of reserve time with the way I wear them.
@@jarekpszuk6944 I would rather spend Rolex money on a stereo. At least it's something that's functionally superior to a $15 quartz watch. Let's face it, a Rolex only shows the time, date and has a pretty useful rotating bezel. All of these things are available on a cheap Casio watch. Furthermore, Rolex watches are quite understated. Worse Rolex hommages and fakes are everywhere. So owning a Rolex isn't even special.
Due to your video I bought the dark screen version. My came in a far more basic card box than yours and have found the screen almost unreadable. The case and strap is great though. I am thinking of buying the bright display version and swapping the insides over :-)
Ice cold! Gotta have one ❤️
Bro, I love your accent. It sounds to me that there are a variety of english accents. What part of the UK are you from?
I like the idea of using full metal or rare metals in these watches. But i like the size of the resins that i came to like and use. So i didn't go for it yet. Maybe in the future they'll make something same size and fancy😉.
The A1000 in silver is my favorite casio vintage watch of all time.
The price seems to have dropped a bit since this video was made (if you shop around).
I have ordered a £12 Skmei 'homage' made out of Zinc alloy instead. If I like it I might consider upgrading to the real thing. If I really like it I won't need to.
I recently a A1000M, the mother of pearl actually got better after a week or two.
Is the glass better tho? Acrylic you can at least reset with polywatch.
I love most things Casio but they do charge quite the premium when their digital watches are encased in steel. I recently picked up an Armitron Griffy and it's encased in steel, great retro reissue and it's easily had for under $40 USC. I wish Casio wouldn't charge for steel like it was gold pressed latinum. 🤓
