Theory: Roman thinks Neo is dead and thus why he hasn't looked for her. And since Neo believes Roman to be dead herself, that's why she went after Cinder and now Ruby.
I’ll believe that Roman is still alive, but there’s no way that Neo knows he’s alive, or at the very least isn’t contact with him. The songs played in RWBY are meant to capture a character’s emotions, and if you listen to “one thing” (song played during neo vs cinder) it’s literally about how the one thing that she cared about (Torchwick) is gone, taken from her.
And it still will ring true if he is alive. If he's alive, I doubt he's wholly human anymore, and the song will transition from 'Neo to Cinder' to 'Neo to Salem'.
Perhaps he talked with Lil Miss (I forget her name) from V6 where Cinder and Neo fought and she told him where he can find Neo. He met up with her and through the power of charades, Neo informed the plan. idk this is a crazy idea, but it something
Roman's semblance allows him to turn into a hat just like the one he normally wears. Roman has been on top of Neo's head this whole time. Listening. Waiting. Plotting
Even if it's only in Neo's flashbacks, Roman coming back would be pretty great. He's kind of been powercrept by Salem's faction, but if he's alive, he and Neo flying off into the sunset on a stolen airship to do their own thing would make me really happy. Only time will tell, but having RWBY's equivalent of Bonnie and Clyde back together would be amazing.
@@PhoenixNight Yeah that makes it even easily possible to throw him into next volume. In terms of fighting skills I always thought while alive (v1-3) he was on par if not stronger than Neo. His parry-skills were top: parrying blakes attacks while spinning, not getting hit once by suns nun-chuck-shotguns(s1 finale I think). He might have even trained Neo originally (wepons have the same shape: head canon neo wanted hers to be like roman). The times he did poorly were because 1. He obviously cant block like Neo, he went with utility instead of defense,leaving holes in his defense,but making them an even better team, as seen in the plane-fight(v3). 2. He got overwhelmed: Got attacked 2v1 from different angles (v1 finale) and like the viewers he didn't know what was going on with blakes powers in the train fight.(end of v2?) He litterally didn't get the chance to do anything in that fight, except parry(!) a few melee hits. Remembering his "get-out-of-jail-card",namely Neo,he was prepared to lose, if it wasn't even part of the bigger bad guy plan(v3 finale).

Roman walks into a fancy clothes store, covered in Grimm saliva, his hair falling over his face, some areas of his clothes nearly see through and others completely dissolved. All the patrons stop and look at him with varied emotions; causing him to sigh. "Look, I've had a bad day, I might of lost my daughter/love interest/best friend, I got eaten alive, and didn't get paid for my job. So I'm going to grab some clothes, and walk right out the door, got it? If you're lucky I might even pay..."

Roman was one of the most compelling antagonists in the series - would love for his return. The bird only swallowed him, not chewed him up, so he could bust out.
And said gryphon was knocked into the airship and *exploded* before the airship crashlanded and exploded alltogether. Oh, and Gray D. Haddock, the voiceactor, confirming his death. But sure, he totally survived all that. I mean, he never had any Aura either, but sure.
Those are very good points, But you forgot... One Thing. Dadum Tiss! The song does seem to highly suggest the idea of revenge on Cinder was purely Neo's idea after having Roman taken from her. I know we aren't supposed to take the lyrics literally but they do convey how the person feels. Neo did go straight for Cinder and her interest doesn't seem to be really focused on Ruby since she chose to still follow Cinder's plan for some odd reason. But it does help us know Roman did indeed find and help her. Her only friend. If Roman is alive. Its a wonder exactly what he is doing. Mercury did refer to Roman as a rat. So he likely went into the underground following the chaos in Vale. Given his connection to Junior. He may end up learning of Neo's presense through Melanie and Miltia's mother. Lil miss. Obviously through the long way given the fallen communication. This possibly reopening his introduction into the series.
You make a good point about the song and what you described makes sense. If Neo doesn't know he is alive and Roman finds her, that scene would be so emotional to see
his reaction when Neo got carried away on her umbrella may actually tie to another thing he said "it's not what I have to gain, it's what I can't afford to lose"... he could very well be reffering to Neo (ok, I know it's not the biggest surprise, but still it's worth mentioning..)

Theory: Roman is not only survived by he's in Vacuo and searching for the Summer maiden so he could break into Shade Academy to steal their Relic and show Cinder Fall and her Mistress why it's not nice to cheat your business partners or turn them into Grimm chow. Note: CInder did tell Neo the entire story about the maidens right in Haven's Vault while telling her how each of their powers serves as Keys to a vault under an academy so who to say she wasn't wired for sound as a ginger-haired gentlemen thief who would see stealing from both the Queen of the Grimm and her Pyromaniac of bootlicker as the highlight of his criminal career. But that's just my theory.
I can totally see Roman stealing a relic and then using it (depending on the powers of said relic) to absolutely thrash Cinder or at least put up a great fight against her and him just making a ton of wisecracks at her
Keith Montague but how would he know how to contact Neo, or if she’s alive, never mind the question of how is he not dead from being eaten by the Nevermore. I know he was swallowed whole, but what about the stomach acid? I’m pretty sure she’s dead
@@smolphoenix8942 It's possible the nevermore could've survived being thrown into the ship and bailed. It's also possible the stomach acid never had time to kick in or only do so partially depending on when he breaks out of it.
The thing about that hat.... there is no confirmation that is Roman's actual hat. Neo is an illusionist, she could just make it appear on her head just like how she can basically change how she appears all the time.
Could be part of the illusion but I can sense that Neo and Roman really did have a deep connection to each other. They honestly reminded me of a father figure/daughter figure. After having such deep affection to each other, probably having been together since day one, I can see her finding his hat, or getting another one to keep the memory of him strong.

I was only saying the hat in my initial post due to the improbability of her actually obtaining Roman's real hat considering it was eaten. I think it'd make sense for Roman to come back in V8 since team RWBY basically went rogue in Atlas at that point, so it'd make sense for them to venture in the city's underground and eventually meet him again. Also I can totally see Roman and Oscar fighting each other with their canes
I've rewatched the scene a dozen times looking for the hat but I can't seem to see it flying away. I believe you though, so this might play into Neo not knowing Roman lived and having a touching reunion between the two
You know, it says something when people are like Roman more than Cinder and he was robbed from us after 3 seasons. He has so much room for growth and an interesting relationship with Neo that I'm honestly more excited for him returning than anything cinder related.
Reasons for torchwick to come back: He was a very likeable villain. He had a cool hat. He had a way with words, not the best way, but at least he gave people nicknames(little red, ice queen,... neo?). There's potential storytelling with him and neo and him influencing her disposition. His death was the least expected, anticlimactic thing ever. Did you know he had a cool hat?
Also quick facts: Brunswick is the name of a real European town which is often cited as the beginning of the tale of the Headless Horseman - the horror icon who's often given a jack-o'-lantern as a new head. A jack-o'-lantern similar to the Emblem of Torchwick himself.

#Phoenix/Night Holy crap, that was a great catch in volume 3. Even if Roman comes back, even if in a flashback, it would mean a number of good things. His voice actor was very important to RWBY as a show and for other Rooster teeth projects (GenLok). Getting some background on Neo would be cool for fan favorite character who is otherwise unable to tell her story. While Neo has been a fan favorite from day one we know so little about how her. For all we know she is more of a sociopath than Cinder. Seeing her and Roman together again opens up other possibilities considering where we left off volume 7.
Quick & Late Theory: If indeed Ruby and the others enter Salem’s Whale, the insides would be some sort of prison. Ruby and the others get swarmed by who knows what grims where some of them gets captured and put into cells, where they encounter a alive not dead Roman, who may either be... 1. In a cell, who looks to be still little bit battered from the airship battle. (He monologues about what happened after.) Or 2. The warden of this prison, casually following Salem’s order as to not die, wearing a different outfit, hairstyle, etc. (And Monologues what happens after.) That is my theory.
I REALLY hope that this theory is at least 85% true. It would make a lot of sense for him to come back now with the major parallels to pinocchio in the show currently.
if Torchwick does come back (and I really hope he does) I think he's gonna be more of a anti-hero than a villain because there is no way he'll side with or even forgive Cinder for what happened to him, because she forced him to do what she wants which later ended up with him eaten, and he definitely won't side with Ruby because if she wasn't on Ironwood's ship, he wouldn't've been eaten
Regardless of that book and being swallowed by a worm, I will default to conventional anime logic; "If there is no body recovered and shown to the viewers, you can never trust that said character is actually dead." Yes, I do think he's alive still. I look forward to Neo's backstory though even more because I still currently believe she actually can talk, but chooses not to. Be it a vow, or something similar. Remember that character from GI Joe? He can speak, but just vowed not to. Or Sphinx from "Gone in 60 seconds". Everyone thought he couldn't speak, but in the end he finally spoke. Also, we are all asking the wrong question here. Instead of asking why Neo sided with Cinder and by extension, Salem, we should be asking; "What will it take for her to switch to being allies with Ruby?" If your theory is correct, then as it stands, Neo already knew Roman was alive and getting "Revenge" at Ruby was never the goal. Perhaps I'm making assumptions based on info I think we don't yet know, but is it possible that Neo's "grudge" with Ruby has something to do with Ruby's mother, and with her dead, the grudge is now transferred to Ruby instead? Like, do we even know how old Neo is? She's very petite so its hard to judge by appearance. But given her ties to Roman, I would assume she's late 20's or early 30's. Anyways, I feel like Neo and Roman have very specific things they strive for and hold very specific values close to them. Roman doesn't give me that "Evil" vibe. Sure, he's a crime boss of sorts and does bad things, but I still feel that he has a code he lives by. He has morals and values of his own. Neo clearly does too. All it takes is one or two pieces of the puzzle to shift and they could end up joining the good guys. I think seeing Neo's backstory will fill in the remaining pieces to make a full prediction for vol8 and onward.

@Pariah exactly! unlike every other villian In rwby, he was not a evil just to be evil. He had reasons. Sadly those reasons collided with the plot armor and caused his death which honestly was uncalled for but I’m glad they never got the chance to fuck him up
While I personally do not think Roman will come back (I don’t think Neo would be acting the way she is if he had lived, even if he has been horribly maimed) I would love to see him again because he was my original favorite character in the show.
True. But you have to take into account that she probably doesn't know he's alive. And he's probably laying low somewhere. And he probably didn't contact her since he had no idea where she might or he may think her dead as she does him.
Sunni Corran it could drastically shape what she’s doing as she’s focused on avenging him. Plus she blamed Cinder for strong arming her and Roman into her schemes. They could either abandon Cinder or work on bringing her (and possibly Salem) from their own motivations
What if it was all just an act which Roman and Neo thought up together to make Cinder believe Roman is dead, so maybe when the right time comes, Roman pops up so he can steal the relic and Neo can take the maiden powers
I mean, we never DID see his Aura break during that fight, and from what we've seen, a fatal blow can't be dealt until AFTER the Aura breaks, and not at the same time. That said, I really never bought the idea that he was dead anyways myself, though I certainly also didn't know that the Griffon survived, so that's EVEN MORE reason to believe that he's still kicking.
He might appear in volume eight in a flashback, maybe... I’ll give you that, but I’m sure he won’t appear in present day atlas. If he does come back I hope he does the same intro he did in RWBY Chibi, only a bit more menacing. “Roman Torchwick is back in town!”
Roman was the most well developed villain. He deserves to come back, though I'm not really sure if he'd fight for Cinder anymore, as he didn't sound like he was aware of Salem's powers. Maybe he and Neo would just return to robbing stuff? Idk, I just can't imagine them motivated enough to take sides in the upcoming war.
@@elizatoponce9375 well yeah, his efforts make the theory believable, but as much as I liked him as a character, I really wouldn't like to have him back. It'd feel like Cinder's fakeout death all over again, and we need to move on from the past. We need new villains, we need new characters, and bringing back old ones would just feel like the show doesn't really value death that much, and it'd just feel like a bigger scale version of vols 1-3 I could even include Penny in my argument, that even her should've stayed dead even though she's one of my favs. Her death made sense and had an impact. And having too much characters cheating death kinda feels like weak storytelling to me, even if RWBY is one of my fav shows
My expectation for vol 8 is to have a scene that starts where Neo and Roman were separated which shows the behavior and emition of Neo and how she felt, i also want to see her go looking for Roman and attacking grimmm our of anger. would add so much more depth to her character. I adore this theory and this video! I have a thought to add: I'm pretty sure Neo isn't in cahoots w/ Roman and has no idea he's still alive. I think the hat is just part of her permanent illusion she presents to the world. For example, the little girl in the picture at Brunswick farms doesn't have any pink hair or pink eyes. I highly doubt Neo wears contacts and dyes her hair. Neo used her semblance to change her outfit at the end of volume 6, instead of just buying new clothes. I think the hat is just part of her current image she's projecting to the outside world in remembrance of him.
Honestly I thought you’d bring up how Tyrian was saved by a Grimm attack on his transport. And Roman was removed from the fight by a Grimm, and as you pointed out could have def survived. Do you think Salem may have picked him up? Though honestly I like the idea he freed himself better.
I like the idea that he freed himself. I dont think Salem would have a use for Roman specifically. With Tyrian, he was a servant willing to kill anyone for her. I think torchwick would be a bit less loyal, more sneaky lol
I hope this is true and he does make a reappearance since I found it pretty disappointing that RT killed him off because they didn’t know what to do with his character after volume 3
i feel like when Neo learns that the grim are being controlled by Salem, her quest for vengeance might turn to Salem. someone, who employed Roman, but didn't bother giving him protection from her monsters. this might lead Neo to at least somewhat ally with the protagonists. it may end up being a redemption arc, where she finds a caring place amungst the protagonists.
I don't see how being eaten alive and then having the grimm being knocked into the airship, explode, then have the airship explode alltogether as it crashes,(him being without Aura even) would allow him to ever come back, even when his v.a further confirmed his death.

I really hope that Roman is alive, he was such an amazing character from volumes 1-3. And if he comes back, It would be cool to see him and Neo reunite and fight against possibly Cinder.
I am praying he is alive this all sounds plausible but I dont know if RT even intended it all?? One thing I do know for sure is Neo is going to turn on Cinder. I think that much like Adam, Cinder threatened Roman to join up with her, needing some sort of petty their to steal all the dust and that Roman only brought Neo in when he thought it was safe for her and was confident that despite his unhappiness of being left in the dark, that Cinder absolutely could not lose. But omg I HOPE we get the back story and return of Roman. It sounds all set up but I think it’ll depend what direction it takes. It might just go to straight war in which case, I don’t know how they will write in Roman returning. Further more if they are going to fan service is Bumblbee why can’t they also fan service is Roman’s return?!
Also I forgot to say, I don’t think Neo attacked because it was on Roman’s orders. I think she knows it was Ruby but blames Cinder for getting them in that situation. But you had a good point that I’ve always wondered about why she agreed so fast to re join Cinder? Maybe it’s to get revenge from the inside but then why would she give her the relic?? I apologize for the wall of text ahead, but I prefer to put all my thoughts in one comment. Couple issues, while I do agree we will see Roman again at least in some capacity: I highly doubt Neo is aware that Roman is alive if indeed he is, as hinted with the content of "One Thing"; I am not convinced by the whole "Griffon flying out" thing, considering there were fuckloads of Griffons flying all over the background of that shot and I don't know if it was necessarily shown specifically going out of the ship or just behind it, though it's hard to be certain and that could turn out to be right; I very highly doubt that Neo is the little girl at Brunswick Farms, even if the ginger boy is indeed Roman (which I think is likely), considering the apparent age difference is larger than that photo would suggest, unless Neo is significantly older than she seems or Roman is significantly younger than he appears to be to me. Plus, the writers said their dynamic was pretty much father-daughterly, rather than sibling-like or romantic (though who knows how messed up their relationship really is), and also "One Thing" implies Roman took her under his wing later in life, definitely AFTER whatever trauma it was that left her mute and alone, therefore it's improbable that this trauma was the destruction of the farm. Other than that I like the idea of Roman returning, and here is my tidbit on the matter: music. Hear me out here. So the leitmotifs of significant characters are all around the place. Different versions of them play all the time, and a significant majority of them have already received full vocalized official renditions, not counting those that appeared in a full form outright. "All Things Must Die" appears along with Cinder and gets a full version only in V5. "Bad Luck Charm" has a one-volume wait until it gets the same treatment. "Fear" is first hinted at when we meet Oscar in V4, while "Hero" plays while Ironwood whoops ass in V3, and both only appear near the end of V7. "Forever Fall" appears way back in V1E3 and is expanded fully only in V6 (F to pay respects). Now, Roman's halloweeny theme is one of the first musical themes we hear in the entire series, and so far it has been four full volumes since we last heard it. It is my firm belief that all the truly important characters' leitmotifs will at some point be put in song form, considering it was done to everyone I just listed and whoever I may have missed. This includes Winter, Penny, Ozpin himself, team SSSN or perhaps just Neptune, and of course Roman Torchwick if RT are to do him any justice. I hope that the context for this is his actual reappearance, though whether it will be that or a backstory thing like with Pyrrha's statue is entirely up in the air. Thank you for your time.
Theory: old grimn that have survived comeback to salem to make the whale, one of the grimn who came back is the one who ate Roman (but survived) making him go inside the whale where he would meet with team rwby inside the whale
Speaking of a Heel Face Turn, Lampwick was the one who convinced Pinocchio to disobey his father and come to Pleasure Island with him where they become bad boys. But Roman never once interacted with Penny. RWBY is all about twisting stories. So, what if in this case Penny convinces Roman to disobey Salem and switch sides?
Okay wait this has barely anything to do with this (though just want to add that you 100% convinced me about Roman which I would love), but what if the reason Neo is mute is because she is mute whenever she changes her appearance, and the Neo we see isn't how she actually looks like because she looks like the girl from Brunswick farm because she probably is that girl? Just throwing that out here. That came to me thanks to another comment talking about "One Thing" meaning Neo probably doesn't know about Roman being alive, but how cute would it be if she sees him, changes back to her true form and just cries and hugs him. ...Okay, but now I kind off need CRWBY to do this XD
I mean her being born with that look would be cool, but unlikely. The song states she had nothing and torchwick took her in, so while finding herself she probably changed her apperance multiple times, till she and furthermore roman was satisfied with her look (her current one), leading to torchwick naming her neo politan.
Not only was his weapon swallowed with him; his hand was on the trigger, and the barrel was pointing straight towards the gryphon's south pole. All Roman has to do is wait for the gryphon to stop moving, and * click click boom * blow it a new you-know-what. Ruby barely touched him in that fight, so I'd say he's got the aura to survive the explosion.
also, if torchwick indeed got out of that grimm without falling to his death or somesuch....he would have had to live a life on the run. Grimm would be after him every where he turned. we know Salem don't like loose ends.
I think a lot of this is on the mark and that there is indeed a reasonable possibility that Roman is alive. Just a few counterarguments, mostly on the idea that Neo knows and is cooperating with him on some plan. 1. The hat Neo is wearing doesn't have to be his real hat. She can just as easily materialize one for herself. Just in general, she can change her appearance in whatever way she wants. 2. While Neo probably knows that Cinder wasn't *personally* responsible for Roman's death/disappearance (if Roman was swallowed by a Grimm, Neo wouldn't be able to find his body and confirm his death with her own eyes, but probably assumes there's a strong chance of him being dead anyway), Roman being involved with Cinder and her plans *at all* is what led to his death. Thus, she has plenty reason to hold Cinder accountable, at least to a degree. 3. Between giving her the Relic and showing visible annoyance whenever Cinder delays action against Ruby, I think she considers the alliance to be a genuine one, if more than a little shaky by the end of Volume 7. 4. Neo seems pretty determined to go after Ruby. If she knew Roman was alive, her grudge would be pretty misplaced, possibly even non-existant. And this isn't a counterargument, but if this anger and vendetta of hers isn't real, if it's just an act, Neo suddenly becomes much less interesting.
Something else I thought of: If Neo got his hat, wouldn't she have also retrieved his cane? She may or may not have *used* it, but she would have had it... unless its owner isn't dead...
I actually really enjoyed Roman's character and I adore his and Neo's interactions/relationship (however you interpret it, heh). Personally, I'd love to believe he is alive still and will return, even if just to see the looks on his and Neo's faces when they see each other again. I think your theory makes a lot of sense, but I'm a bit wary of hoping too hard for Roman's return. I don't want my heart bruised too badly for Neo's sake if he doesn't, heh.
I love Roman for the longest time he was my favorite villain. But here's the thing if Roman came back were would he fit in this story of god's, magic and Salem that's the thing I just don't see how he could fit in the story, not to mention the hero's have grown it's no longer the story of the kid hero fighting the big crime boss. There facing an immortal goddess who control's the Grimm. Phoenix/Night I am with you I would love to see him come back. But I think the show out grew him so to say. P.S. Well he could fit in with penny. Here's the thing, Penny only knows 2 sides of humanity: The goody 2 shoes and apparently assholes who'll give anything their people have to save themselves. Roman is a mostly grey character who may be able to inadvertently see the middle line of that divide.
Well I think he could kinda act as a leader of the people kind of. Like If you think about it if they attack Salem in her world team rwby and all them would be crushed by the sheer number of Grimm. We've seen Roman able to organize equipment and rally people like how he did at the white fang rally in volume two. Maybe he does the came thing to the people giving them weapons and rallying them to fight Salem. Although I think if CRWBY was going to do something like that they'd prolly use Wheatley.
Nicholas Cruse yeah, he literally talked down a warehouse of people whose instinctive bias is to hurt or kill humans, motivated them to follow him, and organized enough munitions and resources to incite the second largest Grimm breach in Vale’s history (1st being Battle of Beacon). He did all this, while also organizing and securing “more Dust Crystals, Vials, and Ammo than we know what to do with!” He minmaxed Charisma real hard.
I threw out the theory about Brunswick farm because in the lyrics of “one thing” it explains a bit about roman and neos backstory, saying that she was lost cold, and then a candle flame brought a brand new name. I don’t personally think that he’s alive, that rarely happens in RWBY since the show is about life not being a fairy tale; there is no happy ending.

Great video! I was actually considering making my own video on the same subject since I have a different theory about how Roman is alive. In short: Ruby kicking the griffon into the airship caused the ship to crash, killing the grimm in the process but not Roman, who would be cushioned from the impact and explosion by being inside the Grimm. General Ironwood upon seeing the ship crash says something to the effect of "I'm going back to my ship," where he would find a damaged but very much alive Torchwick. Roman is unable to resist being taken into custody by Ironwood again after his brush with death and is taken off to Atlas as a prisoner. Volume 7 ends with no less than 4 characters (Qrow, Robyn, Watts and Jacques Schnee) being hauled off to jail. So, what I see happening is at least one of these characters is going to encounter an alive Torchwick in Atlas prison, where they will have to work together to stage a jailbreak.
The fact Roman THOROUGHLY handed Ruby her ass on a silver platter that entire fight, the fact she "one shot" the Grimm that took him down didn't sit well with me. Like, in what universe does that make sense? Yeah, the Grimm took Roman by surprise, but that doesn't mean it would have been able to kill him. I don't doubt that Roman survived being swallowed, but at this stage? RT have destroyed so much of their good will with Volume 7 that I feel IF they do bring Roman back, it won't go down well for them. It will just be seen as placating the fans, just like with Penny, who unlike Roman didn't have any hinting to having a way of returning. She was just brought back... because.
Roman lost his hat on the ship when he got eaten. The hat wasnt with him. I think he can be alive but Neo doesnt know. She just wants to take revenge. In Vol 8 you could see that she doesnt like Salem at all. She is just doing this for revenge I think. She knows that Cinder wanted to kill Ruby so its the fastes thing to do.
If Torchwick does return he will need a serious power boost or something else to make him a credible threat. I feel as though almost anyone on Ruby's side could pretty easily defeat him if he reappeared at the same strength that he was at in Volume 3. It is possible that he could be a threat similar to Dr. Watts where he works behind the scenes and does not engage the heroes in combat unless necessary, but I have detected notable power creep in the series since Volume 4 and I think that Torchwick would need to rise with it or risk being left behind.
I think the only way Roman would come back, would be for Salem to get Neo to work for her. It wouldn't be the actual Roman, more like a look alike that sounds and thinks like him.
When Roman is swallowed by the Griffon, his Aura had not run out at that point in time; we didn't see its glow, we didn't see it fading, and we certainly didn't see any wounds. As such, when he "died", he still had a fully operational force field that prevents him from being killed - or even injured - for as long as he's able to keep his Aura up. Also to be fair, Neo might not have known precisely what the Relic was, since Neo and Roman presumably didn't know about magic, Salem, the Maidens, and Ozpin's resurrective immortality. That, and she likely doesn't seem like the type of person to *care* about having the ability to learn things.

I have a mini theory about how Neo got the hat if Roman survived: So when the Grimm was flying away roman killed it from the inside, and since he was midair, he would've used his grappling hook to save himself. In the process the hat flies off and he doesn't go back for it, (he wouldn't risk his life for a hat) Neo then finds that hat which leads her to believe he's dead.
Finally, someone else covered the Brunswick Farm aspect. I have been commenting on that the pictures were a young Roman and Neo for almost a year. I disagree that Roman will not be on Rubys side. I think it is going to be a 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' story. Neo is now in danger due to Cinder and I think that Roman will become the rogue ally of RWBY. It would make such a cool story aspect to have the have to depend on him without really trusting him and him needing them to help save Neo or if not that, him knowing Salems endgame and knowing he has to help Ruby for his and Neo own sake. I had theories about Romans semblance and I am curious as to what it could be. A limited teleportation would be a new one for the show and fit with his criminal psychology. Intangible could be another and him be able to phase through things. But I do wonder about a limited invulnerability given we have seen him survive things she should not have many times. Firing his cane at his feet to throw Blake back, the train crash, the destruction of the Paladin. If he knew it or not, I think Roman can absorb massive damage and shrug it off. You may say how did Blake kick him unconscious on the train? Well I think it only activates when the force is life threatening to him and the blow to the head was not hard enough to trigger it. On that semblance, I think is what ties into Brunswick Farms. I think his first triggering of his semblance was when the Apathy began to drain everyone and his semblance was protecting him. He tried to tell people but they were all too far gone. The only thing he could do was pick up Neo and take her away and that his how she survived but was so traumatised that she could no longer talk. They never went back because, first off the trauma of it and secondly Roman was not sure why he resisted the first time and wouldn't ever risk that again. Part of the 'survive' mentality from his monolog.
Roman: "It's been quite some time hasn't it, Red? A month? A year...? A decade even? Way too long for my taste. I was beginning to wonder if I ever see that cheery smile of yours ever again..."
I like Roman he was a character who wasn't a full on bad guy, yes he was a thief and a criminal, but he never seemed too be wanting too hurt or harm anyone without a reason. Would I like him too return so that Neo could get away from cinder and have her friend/mentor/lover back; yes I would, but I don't think he will even though I really would like too see him back. Neo I believe is set for two things right now. Either she is going too die when cinder has no further use of her or my real hopefully outcome; she joins JNR too finally give them a full team. What I think will happen is Neo and cinder will have a fight, neo will get hurt badly enough that she would die, if Jaune and his seemingly endless healing potential wasn't there. For whatever reason, either him being a good individual or whatever, Jaune heals Neo. Giving her a second chance at doing the right thing. There is also one thing that makes me believe this will happen; Neo still has a registered voice actress. Yes, I know this isn't the best case to make for her living or joining them, but maybe has a enemy of my enemy is my friend situation. So, let's go with the thought that Neo being mute because of a injury was why she can't talk. Jaune healing her would have the affect of maybe whatever problem is with her that is causing her not to be able to speak. With Cinder holding the relic of knowledge, if she doesn't turn it over too Salem right away, the only way too get it back off her is too a) beat her and take it from her or b) somehow steal it off her. Of course there is some reasons why this theory wouldn't happen, one of the major reasons is, something has to happen to make team RWBY and too a lesser extent team JNR forgive her for beacon (I say lesser because until recently Jaune's team never encountered her). Would I like too see Roman again yes, do I think it will happen no. I think rooster teeth have already done what they wanted too with him and have moved on from him.
@@adonaimelles2317 that is true Oscar's last name is pines, but every team in this show usually uses the first letter of the members first name J for Jaune, N for Nora, R for Ren and so on. Not saying he isn't a member of the group, but as for a specific team, I don't think Oscar's is apart of any team. The kid/guy can usually fight people by himself (of course this is with ozpin in control, but the show has already hinted at he and oz are already merging). So, him needing a team, becomes mute at that point. The only reason I feel he is with Jaune's team is right now he needs people to watch him sense oz was gone, but now that oz is back and Salem is here; I think Oscar is going to be busy with trying to stop ironwood from doing more stupid things and then having to deal with Oz/his ex-wife. I like Oscar, but it never felt like he belonged to a single team, too the group as a whole, yes he fits in fine. But either way I'm waiting excitedly for the next volume.

I personally believe that with Qrow likely going to an Atlesian prison that at some point during his stay there he's going to run into Roman as another prisoner and that the two of them, as well as Jacques Schnee for some interesting irony, will break out. I had thought it would just be Roman and Jacques until Tyrion framed Qrow for killing Clover but with that taken into account, it makes sense for the three of them to conspire to break out each for their own reasons. Plus forcing Roman work with a huntsman and the man he regularly stole from is the best kind of twist.
I hope Roman is still alive. He was one of my all time favorite characters in the the series. I hope this theory is true and what is the best lie Roman could make is the lie of his death.

1) Death Chicken. May have been a different death chicken, that was my take away when I saw it zip past behind Ruby as she flew out of the ship. There were a lot. More notably, it's possible they used the same Alpha model simply because they had it handy. 2) CRWBY Confirmations. CRWBY doesn't typically lie, and stating Roman's death as a death would be a lie. If you could establish precedence for them falsely declaring a character dead (Penny, for example), then you'd have grounds for calling BS on them. 3) Roman numerals. May actually be a play on Neo's character. She was inspired as a character by a gender bent cosplay of Roman (I believe?). So whether or not she had a place in the long term storyline or not, she is pretty much fem-Roman and the numerals may be indicative of a continuation of Roman's story with Neo. She may even play Roman's "role" in corrupting Penny (or trying to). 4) The hat. Too much logic in storytelling is typically bad for it. Meaning if foreshadowing were happening, it'd be a bit more obvious (particularly in recent volumes where they've replaced the little doctor's rubber mallet thing with an 8lb sledge hammer). At this point, the narrative calls for Neo to posses the hat. How she got it is kinda irrelevant. May not even be Roman's hat, just a battered fedora that she donned in memory. You've also contradicted your own theory, Neo and Roman are either working together to take out Cinder (kinda doubt this is a Roman plan, as he was terrified of Cinder), or Neo found the hat and Roman will eventually find her? Presumably, if it was Roman's hat, Roman would've been with said hat. Likely as a crushed and mangled corpse, maybe slightly crispy. Hence "I hate Cinder!". 5) Can survive being swallowed alive by a Grimm. Can't argue this too much except the Blindworm was a size or two (hundred) larger than a Griffon. Even an Alpha Griffin. Coco was able to make her way through it because it was enormous. Roman would likely have been crushed just by the act of it swallowing him. Grimm kill humans, they're pretty much designed to do so. 6) Neo's "inevitable" betrayal. I don't think Neo flipped a 180 all that quickly, tbh. She's pretty clever and quick witted, as evidenced by her fighting style. I can see her agreeing to Cinder's logic pretty quickly, as Ruby was the last person Neo saw with Roman. 7) Brunswick Farms. I don't really subscribe to the fates of these characters being tied closely to the fates of their inspirations. Leo was based on the cowardly lion, who never betrayed the Wizard of Oz or died in the story. Pyrrha's death, having been planned, was possibly written out purposely as a nod to the fandom's theories regarding team JNPR (ot a tease). That being said, again Neo was based on a gender bent cosplay of Roman, so if she were the little girl from the farm, there's as good a tie in as you could expect. I have my doubts for a couple of reasons. One: Qrow reported every bed had a corpse in it (not sure he checked the house they stayed in, though). That somewhat kills the survivors idea. Two: The decay of the bodies doesn't sync well with Neo's current age compared to the little girl's. They were dead for maybe a year, not 15 or 20 (Neo is confirmed to be older than the RWBY girls), and it was a farm with seasons, so it wasn't freezing cold for 15-20 years to help preserve them. Based on the corpse of the huntsman in the wells, I'd say the farm wiped out earlier that year. Three: The song "One Thing" suggests Neo wandered alone without a voice until she found the candle flame that gave her a new name. If we forego logical details for the sake of writing (not everyone can be bothered with nussences like proper representation of corpse decay over a decade or two), the song suggests Neo found Roman and he took her in. If they are tied to the farm, it's probably only one of them (I'd bet Roman), and they trusted/cared for the other due to similarities. Aside from point 2 though, these are just counter speculations. About as evidenced as what you presented. Whether or not CRWBY ever actually confirmed Penny's death is about the only significant evidence that could make the theory possible. If it turns out to be true, I'd be disappointed honestly. I liked Roman, but if CRWBY resurrects yet another character (and this one most certainly because of fandom demands, as it was never significantly foreshadowed till V6), death just becomes pointless. Pyrrha's death would be expected to be reversed miraculously. Sienna would be expected to make a return. Adam definitely might, because Miles cracked jokes about it. I was hoping Watts or Tyrian would die so the villains had to cycle a character out at least once. However, they're still static. If Cinder had died and Adam had been reigned in and forced into team bad than that'd have been an interesting twist.
If Roman had an aura (which is like a 99.9% chance) then theres no way the griffon could have killed him, and even if he killed it in the air he could probably survive the fall with a combination of his "semblance", his cane hook, whatever aura he had left, and his "landing strategy".
My only issue is Haddock may not return to voice him due to his sudden retiring. He may come back for it just so have fun but I'm not sure. I think the writers at this point in the series would be willing to bring him back but his production return looks rocky. But if Roman returns I will flip my shit.

I’ll believe that Roman is still alive, but there’s no way that Neo knows he’s alive, or at the very least isn’t contact with him. The songs played in RWBY are meant to capture a character’s emotions, and if you listen to “one thing” (song played during neo vs cinder) it’s literally about how the one thing that she cared about (Torchwick) is gone, taken from her.

Even if it's only in Neo's flashbacks, Roman coming back would be pretty great. He's kind of been powercrept by Salem's faction, but if he's alive, he and Neo flying off into the sunset on a stolen airship to do their own thing would make me really happy. Only time will tell, but having RWBY's equivalent of Bonnie and Clyde back together would be amazing.

In terms of fighting skills I always thought while alive (v1-3) he was on par if not stronger than Neo. His parry-skills were top:
parrying blakes attacks while spinning, not getting hit once by suns nun-chuck-shotguns(s1 finale I think).
He might have even trained Neo originally (wepons have the same shape: head canon neo wanted hers to be like roman).
The times he did poorly were because
1. He obviously cant block like Neo, he went with utility instead of defense,leaving holes in his defense,but making them an even better team, as seen in the plane-fight(v3).
2. He got overwhelmed: Got attacked 2v1 from different angles (v1 finale) and like the viewers he didn't know what was going on with blakes powers in the train fight.(end of v2?)
He litterally didn't get the chance to do anything in that fight, except parry(!) a few melee hits.
Remembering his "get-out-of-jail-card",namely Neo,he was prepared to lose, if it wasn't even part of the bigger bad guy plan(v3 finale).

The song does seem to highly suggest the idea of revenge on Cinder was purely Neo's idea after having Roman taken from her. I know we aren't supposed to take the lyrics literally but they do convey how the person feels.
Neo did go straight for Cinder and her interest doesn't seem to be really focused on Ruby since she chose to still follow Cinder's plan for some odd reason.
But it does help us know Roman did indeed find and help her. Her only friend.

Theory: Roman is not only survived by he's in Vacuo and searching for the Summer maiden so he could break into Shade Academy to steal their Relic and show Cinder Fall and her Mistress why it's not nice to cheat your business partners or turn them into Grimm chow.
Note: CInder did tell Neo the entire story about the maidens right in Haven's Vault while telling her how each of their powers serves as Keys to a vault under an academy so who to say she wasn't wired for sound as a ginger-haired gentlemen thief who would see stealing from both the Queen of the Grimm and her Pyromaniac of bootlicker as the highlight of his criminal career.
But that's just my theory.
I can totally see Roman stealing a relic and then using it (depending on the powers of said relic) to absolutely thrash Cinder or at least put up a great fight against her and him just making a ton of wisecracks at her

@@smolphoenix8942 It's possible the nevermore could've survived being thrown into the ship and bailed. It's also possible the stomach acid never had time to kick in or only do so partially depending on when he breaks out of it.
The thing about that hat.... there is no confirmation that is Roman's actual hat. Neo is an illusionist, she could just make it appear on her head just like how she can basically change how she appears all the time.
Could be part of the illusion but I can sense that Neo and Roman really did have a deep connection to each other. They honestly reminded me of a father figure/daughter figure. After having such deep affection to each other, probably having been together since day one, I can see her finding his hat, or getting another one to keep the memory of him strong.

#Phoenix/Night Holy crap, that was a great catch in volume 3. Even if Roman comes back, even if in a flashback, it would mean a number of good things. His voice actor was very important to RWBY as a show and for other Rooster teeth projects (GenLok). Getting some background on Neo would be cool for fan favorite character who is otherwise unable to tell her story. While Neo has been a fan favorite from day one we know so little about how her. For all we know she is more of a sociopath than Cinder. Seeing her and Roman together again opens up other possibilities considering where we left off volume 7.

if Torchwick does come back (and I really hope he does) I think he's gonna be more of a anti-hero than a villain because there is no way he'll side with or even forgive Cinder for what happened to him, because she forced him to do what she wants which later ended up with him eaten, and he definitely won't side with Ruby because if she wasn't on Ironwood's ship, he wouldn't've been eaten

I look forward to Neo's backstory though even more because I still currently believe she actually can talk, but chooses not to. Be it a vow, or something similar. Remember that character from GI Joe? He can speak, but just vowed not to. Or Sphinx from "Gone in 60 seconds". Everyone thought he couldn't speak, but in the end he finally spoke.
Also, we are all asking the wrong question here. Instead of asking why Neo sided with Cinder and by extension, Salem, we should be asking; "What will it take for her to switch to being allies with Ruby?"
If your theory is correct, then as it stands, Neo already knew Roman was alive and getting "Revenge" at Ruby was never the goal.
Perhaps I'm making assumptions based on info I think we don't yet know, but is it possible that Neo's "grudge" with Ruby has something to do with Ruby's mother, and with her dead, the grudge is now transferred to Ruby instead?
Like, do we even know how old Neo is? She's very petite so its hard to judge by appearance. But given her ties to Roman, I would assume she's late 20's or early 30's.
Anyways, I feel like Neo and Roman have very specific things they strive for and hold very specific values close to them. Roman doesn't give me that "Evil" vibe. Sure, he's a crime boss of sorts and does bad things, but I still feel that he has a code he lives by. He has morals and values of his own. Neo clearly does too.
All it takes is one or two pieces of the puzzle to shift and they could end up joining the good guys.
I think seeing Neo's backstory will fill in the remaining pieces to make a full prediction for vol8 and onward.

While I personally do not think Roman will come back (I don’t think Neo would be acting the way she is if he had lived, even if he has been horribly maimed) I would love to see him again because he was my original favorite character in the show.
True. But you have to take into account that she probably doesn't know he's alive. And he's probably laying low somewhere. And he probably didn't contact her since he had no idea where she might or he may think her dead as she does him.

This is everything I needed and wanted to hear.
I mean, we never DID see his Aura break during that fight, and from what we've seen, a fatal blow can't be dealt until AFTER the Aura breaks, and not at the same time. That said, I really never bought the idea that he was dead anyways myself, though I certainly also didn't know that the Griffon survived, so that's EVEN MORE reason to believe that he's still kicking.
He might appear in volume eight in a flashback, maybe... I’ll give you that, but I’m sure he won’t appear in present day atlas.
If he does come back I hope he does the same intro he did in RWBY Chibi, only a bit more menacing.

Roman was the most well developed villain. He deserves to come back, though I'm not really sure if he'd fight for Cinder anymore, as he didn't sound like he was aware of Salem's powers.

It'd feel like Cinder's fakeout death all over again, and we need to move on from the past. We need new villains, we need new characters, and bringing back old ones would just feel like the show doesn't really value death that much, and it'd just feel like a bigger scale version of vols 1-3
I could even include Penny in my argument, that even her should've stayed dead even though she's one of my favs. Her death made sense and had an impact. And having too much characters cheating death kinda feels like weak storytelling to me, even if RWBY is one of my fav shows

I'm pretty sure Neo isn't in cahoots w/ Roman and has no idea he's still alive. I think the hat is just part of her permanent illusion she presents to the world. For example, the little girl in the picture at Brunswick farms doesn't have any pink hair or pink eyes. I highly doubt Neo wears contacts and dyes her hair. Neo used her semblance to change her outfit at the end of volume 6, instead of just buying new clothes. I think the hat is just part of her current image she's projecting to the outside world in remembrance of him.

i feel like when Neo learns that the grim are being controlled by Salem, her quest for vengeance might turn to Salem. someone, who employed Roman, but didn't bother giving him protection from her monsters. this might lead Neo to at least somewhat ally with the protagonists. it may end up being a redemption arc, where she finds a caring place amungst the protagonists.

One thing I do know for sure is Neo is going to turn on Cinder. I think that much like Adam, Cinder threatened Roman to join up with her, needing some sort of petty their to steal all the dust and that Roman only brought Neo in when he thought it was safe for her and was confident that despite his unhappiness of being left in the dark, that Cinder absolutely could not lose.
But omg I HOPE we get the back story and return of Roman. It sounds all set up but I think it’ll depend what direction it takes. It might just go to straight war in which case, I don’t know how they will write in Roman returning.

I apologize for the wall of text ahead, but I prefer to put all my thoughts in one comment.
Couple issues, while I do agree we will see Roman again at least in some capacity:
I highly doubt Neo is aware that Roman is alive if indeed he is, as hinted with the content of "One Thing";
I am not convinced by the whole "Griffon flying out" thing, considering there were fuckloads of Griffons flying all over the background of that shot and I don't know if it was necessarily shown specifically going out of the ship or just behind it, though it's hard to be certain and that could turn out to be right;
I very highly doubt that Neo is the little girl at Brunswick Farms, even if the ginger boy is indeed Roman (which I think is likely), considering the apparent age difference is larger than that photo would suggest, unless Neo is significantly older than she seems or Roman is significantly younger than he appears to be to me. Plus, the writers said their dynamic was pretty much father-daughterly, rather than sibling-like or romantic (though who knows how messed up their relationship really is), and also "One Thing" implies Roman took her under his wing later in life, definitely AFTER whatever trauma it was that left her mute and alone, therefore it's improbable that this trauma was the destruction of the farm.
Other than that I like the idea of Roman returning, and here is my tidbit on the matter: music. Hear me out here.
So the leitmotifs of significant characters are all around the place. Different versions of them play all the time, and a significant majority of them have already received full vocalized official renditions, not counting those that appeared in a full form outright. "All Things Must Die" appears along with Cinder and gets a full version only in V5. "Bad Luck Charm" has a one-volume wait until it gets the same treatment. "Fear" is first hinted at when we meet Oscar in V4, while "Hero" plays while Ironwood whoops ass in V3, and both only appear near the end of V7. "Forever Fall" appears way back in V1E3 and is expanded fully only in V6 (F to pay respects). Now, Roman's halloweeny theme is one of the first musical themes we hear in the entire series, and so far it has been four full volumes since we last heard it. It is my firm belief that all the truly important characters' leitmotifs will at some point be put in song form, considering it was done to everyone I just listed and whoever I may have missed. This includes Winter, Penny, Ozpin himself, team SSSN or perhaps just Neptune, and of course Roman Torchwick if RT are to do him any justice. I hope that the context for this is his actual reappearance, though whether it will be that or a backstory thing like with Pyrrha's statue is entirely up in the air.

That came to me thanks to another comment talking about "One Thing" meaning Neo probably doesn't know about Roman being alive, but how cute would it be if she sees him, changes back to her true form and just cries and hugs him.

The song states she had nothing and torchwick took her in, so while finding herself she probably changed her apperance multiple times, till she and furthermore roman was satisfied with her look (her current one), leading to torchwick naming her neo politan.

Not only was his weapon swallowed with him; his hand was on the trigger, and the barrel was pointing straight towards the gryphon's south pole. All Roman has to do is wait for the gryphon to stop moving, and * click click boom * blow it a new you-know-what. Ruby barely touched him in that fight, so I'd say he's got the aura to survive the explosion.
Not really sure either way but generally think anime is like the comic books: when it comes to possible storylines no one is ever truly dead dead

I think a lot of this is on the mark and that there is indeed a reasonable possibility that Roman is alive. Just a few counterarguments, mostly on the idea that Neo knows and is cooperating with him on some plan.
1. The hat Neo is wearing doesn't have to be his real hat. She can just as easily materialize one for herself. Just in general, she can change her appearance in whatever way she wants.
2. While Neo probably knows that Cinder wasn't *personally* responsible for Roman's death/disappearance (if Roman was swallowed by a Grimm, Neo wouldn't be able to find his body and confirm his death with her own eyes, but probably assumes there's a strong chance of him being dead anyway), Roman being involved with Cinder and her plans *at all* is what led to his death. Thus, she has plenty reason to hold Cinder accountable, at least to a degree.
3. Between giving her the Relic and showing visible annoyance whenever Cinder delays action against Ruby, I think she considers the alliance to be a genuine one, if more than a little shaky by the end of Volume 7.
4. Neo seems pretty determined to go after Ruby. If she knew Roman was alive, her grudge would be pretty misplaced, possibly even non-existant.
And this isn't a counterargument, but if this anger and vendetta of hers isn't real, if it's just an act, Neo suddenly becomes much less interesting.
Something else I thought of: If Neo got his hat, wouldn't she have also retrieved his cane? She may or may not have *used* it, but she would have had it... unless its owner isn't dead...
I actually really enjoyed Roman's character and I adore his and Neo's interactions/relationship (however you interpret it, heh). Personally, I'd love to believe he is alive still and will return, even if just to see the looks on his and Neo's faces when they see each other again. I think your theory makes a lot of sense, but I'm a bit wary of hoping too hard for Roman's return. I don't want my heart bruised too badly for Neo's sake if he doesn't, heh.
I love Roman for the longest time he was my favorite villain. But here's the thing if Roman came back were would he fit in this story of god's, magic and Salem that's the thing I just don't see how he could fit in the story, not to mention the hero's have grown it's no longer the story of the kid hero fighting the big crime boss. Well he could fit in with penny. Here's the thing, Penny only knows 2 sides of humanity: The goody 2 shoes and apparently assholes who'll give anything their people have to save themselves. Roman is a mostly grey character who may be able to inadvertently see the middle line of that divide.
Well I think he could kinda act as a leader of the people kind of. Like If you think about it if they attack Salem in her world team rwby and all them would be crushed by the sheer number of Grimm. We've seen Roman able to organize equipment and rally people like how he did at the white fang rally in volume two. Maybe he does the came thing to the people giving them weapons and rallying them to fight Salem. Although I think if CRWBY was going to do something like that they'd prolly use Wheatley.
Nicholas Cruse yeah, he literally talked down a warehouse of people whose instinctive bias is to hurt or kill humans, motivated them to follow him, and organized enough munitions and resources to incite the second largest Grimm breach in Vale’s history (1st being Battle of Beacon). He did all this, while also organizing and securing “more Dust Crystals, Vials, and Ammo than we know what to do with!”

I threw out the theory about Brunswick farm because in the lyrics of “one thing” it explains a bit about roman and neos backstory, saying that she was lost cold, and then a candle flame brought a brand new name.

Great video! I was actually considering making my own video on the same subject since I have a different theory about how Roman is alive. In short: Ruby kicking the griffon into the airship caused the ship to crash, killing the grimm in the process but not Roman, who would be cushioned from the impact and explosion by being inside the Grimm. General Ironwood upon seeing the ship crash says something to the effect of "I'm going back to my ship," where he would find a damaged but very much alive Torchwick. Roman is unable to resist being taken into custody by Ironwood again after his brush with death and is taken off to Atlas as a prisoner. Volume 7 ends with no less than 4 characters (Qrow, Robyn, Watts and Jacques Schnee) being hauled off to jail. So, what I see happening is at least one of these characters is going to encounter an alive Torchwick in Atlas prison, where they will have to work together to stage a jailbreak.

The fact Roman THOROUGHLY handed Ruby her ass on a silver platter that entire fight, the fact she "one shot" the Grimm that took him down didn't sit well with me. Like, in what universe does that make sense? Yeah, the Grimm took Roman by surprise, but that doesn't mean it would have been able to kill him.
I don't doubt that Roman survived being swallowed, but at this stage? RT have destroyed so much of their good will with Volume 7 that I feel IF they do bring Roman back, it won't go down well for them. It will just be seen as placating the fans, just like with Penny, who unlike Roman didn't have any hinting to having a way of returning. She was just brought back... because.
Roman lost his hat on the ship when he got eaten. The hat wasnt with him. I think he can be alive but Neo doesnt know. She just wants to take revenge. In Vol 8 you could see that she doesnt like Salem at all. She is just doing this for revenge I think. She knows that Cinder wanted to kill Ruby so its the fastes thing to do.
If Torchwick does return he will need a serious power boost or something else to make him a credible threat. I feel as though almost anyone on Ruby's side could pretty easily defeat him if he reappeared at the same strength that he was at in Volume 3. It is possible that he could be a threat similar to Dr. Watts where he works behind the scenes and does not engage the heroes in combat unless necessary, but I have detected notable power creep in the series since Volume 4 and I think that Torchwick would need to rise with it or risk being left behind.
I think the only way Roman would come back, would be for Salem to get Neo to work for her. It wouldn't be the actual Roman, more like a look alike that sounds and thinks like him.

When Roman is swallowed by the Griffon, his Aura had not run out at that point in time; we didn't see its glow, we didn't see it fading, and we certainly didn't see any wounds. As such, when he "died", he still had a fully operational force field that prevents him from being killed - or even injured - for as long as he's able to keep his Aura up.
Also to be fair, Neo might not have known precisely what the Relic was, since Neo and Roman presumably didn't know about magic, Salem, the Maidens, and Ozpin's resurrective immortality. That, and she likely doesn't seem like the type of person to *care* about having the ability to learn things.
I really hope that Neo quite literally stabs Cinder in the back with her umbrella.

I have a mini theory about how Neo got the hat if Roman survived: So when the Grimm was flying away roman killed it from the inside, and since he was midair, he would've used his grappling hook to save himself. In the process the hat flies off and he doesn't go back for it, (he wouldn't risk his life for a hat) Neo then finds that hat which leads her to believe he's dead.
Finally, someone else covered the Brunswick Farm aspect. I have been commenting on that the pictures were a young Roman and Neo for almost a year.
I disagree that Roman will not be on Rubys side. I think it is going to be a 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' story. Neo is now in danger due to Cinder and I think that Roman will become the rogue ally of RWBY. It would make such a cool story aspect to have the have to depend on him without really trusting him and him needing them to help save Neo or if not that, him knowing Salems endgame and knowing he has to help Ruby for his and Neo own sake.
I had theories about Romans semblance and I am curious as to what it could be. A limited teleportation would be a new one for the show and fit with his criminal psychology. Intangible could be another and him be able to phase through things. But I do wonder about a limited invulnerability given we have seen him survive things she should not have many times. Firing his cane at his feet to throw Blake back, the train crash, the destruction of the Paladin. If he knew it or not, I think Roman can absorb massive damage and shrug it off. You may say how did Blake kick him unconscious on the train? Well I think it only activates when the force is life threatening to him and the blow to the head was not hard enough to trigger it.
On that semblance, I think is what ties into Brunswick Farms. I think his first triggering of his semblance was when the Apathy began to drain everyone and his semblance was protecting him. He tried to tell people but they were all too far gone. The only thing he could do was pick up Neo and take her away and that his how she survived but was so traumatised that she could no longer talk. They never went back because, first off the trauma of it and secondly Roman was not sure why he resisted the first time and wouldn't ever risk that again. Hey, Ruby and Roman DO have some unfinished business.
I like Roman he was a character who wasn't a full on bad guy, yes he was a thief and a criminal, but he never seemed too be wanting too hurt or harm anyone without a reason. Would I like him too return so that Neo could get away from cinder and have her friend/mentor/lover back; yes I would, but I don't think he will even though I really would like too see him back.
Neo I believe is set for two things right now. Either she is going too die when cinder has no further use of her or my real hopefully outcome; she joins JNR too finally give them a full team. What I think will happen is Neo and cinder will have a fight, neo will get hurt badly enough that she would die, if Jaune and his seemingly endless healing potential wasn't there. For whatever reason, either him being a good individual or whatever, Jaune heals Neo. Giving her a second chance at doing the right thing. There is also one thing that makes me believe this will happen; Neo still has a registered voice actress.
Yes, I know this isn't the best case to make for her living or joining them, but maybe has a enemy of my enemy is my friend situation. So, let's go with the thought that Neo being mute because of a injury was why she can't talk. Jaune healing her would have the affect of maybe whatever problem is with her that is causing her not to be able to speak. With Cinder holding the relic of knowledge, if she doesn't turn it over too Salem right away, the only way too get it back off her is too a) beat her and take it from her or b) somehow steal it off her. Of course there is some reasons why this theory wouldn't happen, one of the major reasons is, something has to happen to make team RWBY and too a lesser extent team JNR forgive her for beacon (I say lesser because until recently Jaune's team never encountered her).
Would I like too see Roman again yes, do I think it will happen no. I think rooster teeth have already done what they wanted too with him and have moved on from him.
@@adonaimelles2317 that is true Oscar's last name is pines, but every team in this show usually uses the first letter of the members first name J for Jaune, N for Nora, R for Ren and so on. Not saying he isn't a member of the group, but as for a specific team, I don't think Oscar's is apart of any team. The kid/guy can usually fight people by himself (of course this is with ozpin in control, but the show has already hinted at he and oz are already merging). So, him needing a team, becomes mute at that point. The only reason I feel he is with Jaune's team is right now he needs people to watch him sense oz was gone, but now that oz is back and Salem is here; I think Oscar is going to be busy with trying to stop ironwood from doing more stupid things and then having to deal with Oz/his ex-wife.
I like Oscar, but it never felt like he belonged to a single team, too the group as a whole, yes he fits in fine. But either way I'm waiting excitedly for the next volume.

I personally believe that with Qrow likely going to an Atlesian prison that at some point during his stay there he's going to run into Roman as another prisoner and that the two of them, as well as Jacques Schnee for some interesting irony, will break out. I had thought it would just be Roman and Jacques until Tyrion framed Qrow for killing Clover but with that taken into account, it makes sense for the three of them to conspire to break out each for their own reasons. Plus forcing Roman work with a huntsman and the man he regularly stole from is the best kind of twist.
I hope Roman is still alive. He was one of my all time favorite characters in the the series. I hope this theory is true and what is the best lie Roman could make is the lie of his death.

1) Death Chicken. May have been a different death chicken, that was my take away when I saw it zip past behind Ruby as she flew out of the ship. There were a lot. More notably, it's possible they used the same Alpha model simply because they had it handy.
2) CRWBY Confirmations. CRWBY doesn't typically lie, and stating Roman's death as a death would be a lie. If you could establish precedence for them falsely declaring a character dead (Penny, for example), then you'd have grounds for calling BS on them.
3) Roman numerals. May actually be a play on Neo's character. She was inspired as a character by a gender bent cosplay of Roman (I believe?). So whether or not she had a place in the long term storyline or not, she is pretty much fem-Roman and the numerals may be indicative of a continuation of Roman's story with Neo. She may even play Roman's "role" in corrupting Penny (or trying to).
4) The hat. Too much logic in storytelling is typically bad for it. Meaning if foreshadowing were happening, it'd be a bit more obvious (particularly in recent volumes where they've replaced the little doctor's rubber mallet thing with an 8lb sledge hammer). At this point, the narrative calls for Neo to posses the hat. How she got it is kinda irrelevant. May not even be Roman's hat, just a battered fedora that she donned in memory. You've also contradicted your own theory, Neo and Roman are either working together to take out Cinder (kinda doubt this is a Roman plan, as he was terrified of Cinder), or Neo found the hat and Roman will eventually find her? Presumably, if it was Roman's hat, Roman would've been with said hat. Likely as a crushed and mangled corpse, maybe slightly crispy. Hence "I hate Cinder!".
5) Can survive being swallowed alive by a Grimm. Can't argue this too much except the Blindworm was a size or two (hundred) larger than a Griffon. Even an Alpha Griffin. Coco was able to make her way through it because it was enormous. Roman would likely have been crushed just by the act of it swallowing him. Grimm kill humans, they're pretty much designed to do so.
6) Neo's "inevitable" betrayal. I don't think Neo flipped a 180 all that quickly, tbh. She's pretty clever and quick witted, as evidenced by her fighting style. I can see her agreeing to Cinder's logic pretty quickly, as Ruby was the last person Neo saw with Roman.
7) Brunswick Farms. I don't really subscribe to the fates of these characters being tied closely to the fates of their inspirations. Leo was based on the cowardly lion, who never betrayed the Wizard of Oz or died in the story. Pyrrha's death, having been planned, was possibly written out purposely as a nod to the fandom's theories regarding team JNPR (ot a tease). That being said, again Neo was based on a gender bent cosplay of Roman, so if she were the little girl from the farm, there's as good a tie in as you could expect. I have my doubts for a couple of reasons. One: Qrow reported every bed had a corpse in it (not sure he checked the house they stayed in, though). That somewhat kills the survivors idea. Two: The decay of the bodies doesn't sync well with Neo's current age compared to the little girl's. They were dead for maybe a year, not 15 or 20 (Neo is confirmed to be older than the RWBY girls), and it was a farm with seasons, so it wasn't freezing cold for 15-20 years to help preserve them. Based on the corpse of the huntsman in the wells, I'd say the farm wiped out earlier that year. Three: The song "One Thing" suggests Neo wandered alone without a voice until she found the candle flame that gave her a new name. If we forego logical details for the sake of writing (not everyone can be bothered with nussences like proper representation of corpse decay over a decade or two), the song suggests Neo found Roman and he took her in. If they are tied to the farm, it's probably only one of them (I'd bet Roman), and they trusted/cared for the other due to similarities.
Aside from point 2 though, these are just counter speculations. About as evidenced as what you presented. Whether or not CRWBY ever actually confirmed Penny's death is about the only significant evidence that could make the theory possible.
If it turns out to be true, I'd be disappointed honestly. I liked Roman, but if CRWBY resurrects yet another character (and this one most certainly because of fandom demands, as it was never significantly foreshadowed till V6), death just becomes pointless. Pyrrha's death would be expected to be reversed miraculously. Sienna would be expected to make a return. Adam definitely might, because Miles cracked jokes about it.
I was hoping Watts or Tyrian would die so the villains had to cycle a character out at least once. However, they're still static. If Cinder had died and Adam had been reigned in and forced into team bad than that'd have been an interesting twist.

If Roman had an aura (which is like a 99.9% chance) then theres no way the griffon could have killed him, and even if he killed it in the air he could probably survive the fall with a combination of his "semblance", his cane hook, whatever aura he had left, and his "landing strategy".
its been my theory that torchwick was alive ever since he was swallowed whole. I'm glad someone else thinks so too.
My only issue is Haddock may not return to voice him due to his sudden retiring. He may come back for it just so have fun but I'm not sure. I think the writers at this point in the series would be willing to bring him back but his production return looks rocky.
But if Roman returns I will flip my shit.
