    Thanks for a great review. I've got a pedalboard that I use live. Usually, it is sent to a PowerStage 170 > 4x12 cabinet. But I'd like to be able to go direct to the house board at clubs when needed, or to a flat response powered speaker, so I don't have to carry a heavy 4x12 every time. I think this pedal is what I'm looking for to make it work.

    I'd love to see how this works in the effects loop of the plethora. Then one could map the effects loop to a spot on the board using any desired effect pedals. In this rig set up, it might be smarter to use a distortion at the beginning of the chain rather than in the effects loop with the IR loader.

Original firmware lacking cab Sims was certainly improved with added cab Sims but I think it would be a no-brainer to include and impulse feature in a further firmware update. • @JamieTyson
    @JamieTyson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This looks great! I've been using IRs for years. Good to see TC doing it! I have nerdy technical questions. What processor is this using? Only 100ma and 200mS of processing is awesome! I have learned that IRs work best with a reactive load after an amp. When using IRs without an amp, a really specific EQ is required to emulate the response of an amp interacting with the cabinet- a narrow (high q) 6dB-8dB boost around 100Hz and a broad 6dB shelf around 8khz, sloping gently down. Can Impulse do that? It makes a HUGE difference. It sounds like that's what some of the "amp" IRs are doing, but it would be nice to have a tweakable way to do that, like on the Mooer Radar. Anyway, looks great, thanks!

    • @jaredmacabale7285
      @jaredmacabale7285 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which do you prefer? Mooer radar, nux solid studio or this?

    • @JamieTyson
      @JamieTyson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaredmacabale7285 depends on the application. I use the Radar after a preamp, with the parametric EQ set for a narrow 6dB boost at 100hz and a gentle slope up to a similar level around 10k. This emulates the curve of a tube amp interacting with a speaker. If I didn't need that feature any decent IR processor would be fine. At home I often use the old torpedo cab after a suhr reactive load. I will probably go with the TC in the future. I also have the Sonicake IR loader, and it sounds good but has almost 10 milliseconds of latency, which is noticable and annoying at times!

    • @jaredmacabale7285
      @jaredmacabale7285 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamieTyson thank you for the insight. A lot of commenters I see have clipping issues on radar. That's why I am leaning more into Nux studio. You have same issues on radar?

    • @JamieTyson
      @JamieTyson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaredmacabale7285 thanks, hope it's helpful! Don't really have clipping problems, and the unit has good indication of input and output clipping. I guess you have to be mindful of gain staging. What signals are they feeding it? Mine sits after an all tube preamp with pretty high output, but I have it down pretty low. I do have the output on the radar down pretty low, maybe 25, but it works great. Mine is in front of delay and verb, which I run in stereo into a stereo DI to the house. We monitor with in-ears. I mention this method because I feel it's superior to using it at the end of the chain like an amp. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but this is what I have found works best for me.

      You can absolutely use this pedal, but you don't need to bypass the preamp section: the Impulse will work as a cabinet simulator for the ME-80's built-in preamps, giving you a lot of flexibility when choosing emulated speaker types.
      By the way, and I'm not sure you knew this, but the ME-80 also has a built-in cabinet simulator. If you insert a dummy plug such as an headphone adapter on the record output, it'll activate the cab sim on the the regular outputs, and you can go straight to the PA with it. I'm not sure how good the internal cab sim will be, but it might good enough for your purposes :)

    • @PedalPlatform
      @PedalPlatform  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming you already have overdrive / distortion pedals on your board, you can use the "pedal platform" impulse responses to shape the sound, and that could be enough. In that case I'd still recommend experimenting with setting up a very light compressor either right before or after the Impulse, to provide a bit of "sag" to the tone - otherwise you get a very direct, "solid state like" response that might not be to your liking.
      Either way, I still prefer to use a preamp style pedal for what I consider to be my best results. 😄

    Great video man ! What is the signal chain when recording exactly? Can you just plug your head directly into the pedal then the pedal directly into your audio interface? Or do you need some kind of di loadbox? Can't seem to find the answer nowhere

    • @PedalPlatform
      @PedalPlatform  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! 🙏🏻 And you *always* need a load box with the Impulse, if your amp doesn't provide one already. The Impulse is an instrument / line level device, if you plug your speaker output directly without a load box you might damage your amp, the Impulse, or both.
      My preferred signal path is guitar -> pedals -> amp -> load box (I use the torpedo captor) -> load box line out to Impulse -> optional delays / reverbs -> audio interface.

    Good video except for 1 thing......The best way of assessing these IR pedals, and IR plugins, is to A/B them against the real speakers in cabs. That cannot be done on youtube cos youtube makes everything sound the same and is useless for any tone comparisons. You have to do it live yourself. I have not A/B'ed actual cabs against the Impulse but I have for Captor X, and some IR plugins. Outcome for all my A/Bs has been always poor for the IRs. Real cabs poo on IR and it gets worse as you increase volume. With the Impluse, when you start adding more digital conversions with a Captor X in the chain also, you're degrading the original analog tone with each new device you add to the chain. For this reason I avoid all IRs and a-d-a conversions. I stay analog as much as possible and mic real cabs :)
