I’m amazed at the humility of these top class players. When Rickie said “ and pray that it goes well “ when he was about to hit his next shot, goes to show how tough the sport of golf is and the reason why it’s so much more a mental game rather than pure skill.

Golf is a sport where, if play enough and want to succeed, you must embrace failure, not hide from it. I feel that underlying principle makes pros humble by default. This doesn’t diminish their charity work and kindness.

that lob shot w/ the face open from the fairway is a dangerous shot. the bounce on the wedge can make you shank that shot so easily. thats a shot you would rarely want to play. hence the reason rickie says it's a low percentage shot lol.

“The lie determines the shot”, very telling comment. I often try something I shouldn’t at times but Rickey’s careful placement for the spinner and the number of times he mentioned the grass tells me that I don’t understand enough about turf. I think you guys also had a video last year with Rahm, he was also commenting on grain and turf when chipping.

      @apaulmcdonough2170 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If Grass can get between the Face and the Ball, then the grass will diminish SPIN, turning the "Checking Up" Shot into a Pitch and Run that lands too far and then runs too far, usually leaving a long come back Putt.

If you watch Ricky describe the short "lob" shot with his 60 and hands flat-watch how he leads with the heel of the club to assure that the head stays open and he uses the bounce. McIlroy gave that tip on one of the TM videos when discussing similar shots, including bunker shots. Just another way to "think" about it

I've converted to practicing 80% of the time with my 52 and learning to hit that type of shot - it really teaches you about opening the face, using the bounce, and hitting right checking slice spin. That would be my advice to everyone out there - learn to hit low spinning shots & high soft shots with your 52 - when you then get a 56/58 in your hands, it will be like cheating - I can't tell you how much my chipping & pitching improved once this became the focus of almost all my practice time.

The 30 ~ 50 yard shot is my favorite out of everything I hit during a round. I spent one entire summer hitting at least 1,000 balls a week from inside 60 yards because I couldn't hit that shot and it was killing my game. I got rather good at it (although not nearly in the same league as even the bottom tier pros) and it has been a game saver. For me, the best combination is the Titleist Pro V1 ball and my old (1980's) Ping Eye 2 Sand wedge (57½° loft).

I'm very envious of you two guys spending some time with Ricky, I had watched him on TV prior to the 2010
Ryder Cup match but seeing him as an 18 Yr old under tremendous pressure coming from 3 or 4 down in his singles match at 'Dormy ' to gain a half and making 3 long quick putts all I believe with a break has made me a big fan of his. Also he doesn't tend to over hit his shorter putts but gauges the break carefully and generally his putts drop on an exact pace rather than hitting the back of the hole firmly, Ricky Fowler I hope you come back stronger than ever
And wish you well along with a major or four.

Totally agree with Ricky on chips, more of a “hinge and hold” works so much better and consistently than trying to get back to 90* or nutrual, unless your going for more of a flop. I keep seeing TH-cam golfers suggest getting back to that 90*, just seems very scoopy, easy to hit fat or blade when doing that, rather than letting your lead hand (glove hand) lead and catching it nice and crisp.

I’ve found the key to making better short shots is to just relax the arms and body as much as possible to avoid tensing up and missing/thinning the ball, and choke up a bit for control and to reduce the swing weight naturally.

These two guys do an excellent job. It looked to me like the spin shot only works if the ball is sitting up a bit. If you have that, open the face until the back of the club lays on the grass. Then, cut across the ball a bit using an outside in half-stroke. This is all touch & feel, so there is no short & brisk stroke. It's a longer, smoother stroke & you have to go with your best guess on how fast you swing.

@Meandmygolf Hi guys, thanks as always for your videos. I was wondering if you have anything on arm pressure and positioning? For example, as a right-handed golfer: What should be the left arm and right arms' positions at address and level of tension in both. Is it the same throughout? Does it adjust throughout the swing? I typically try to keep my left arm straight, and this causes more tension in it, and my right arm more loose, so as to try to promote the angle/lag on the downswing through impact. I'm just not sure however about the FEELING of all this.
My instructor tells me I come over the top and I am too strong with the arms(first) coming down to impact. I'm trying to get the feeling of lead hip rotation and PULLING my arms down to impact so I can get rid of this issue. Thought I sense that the arm positions and pressure plays a role as well. Anything specific on this? Or maybe you guys can put together a focused video on it.
    Thanks!

Ricky talks about using an open stance, how much does that affect aim/direction? I assume one should aim a few yards left.

Probably the most important tip from Rickie was that amateurs should focus on getting it in the hole in 3 shots from there. Best way to take the pressure off the shot and break 90 or 100.

    Hi together from Germany 🙂
Yes, its fully correct...sometimes you dont need shots Rickie can do, but the Fun Factor weights much more sometimes playing with a good Friend 🙂

Great advice and tips. Best tip was to hit a 7 iron or 4 iron and not try to hit the perfect shot. I personally use an 8 iron or my hybrid to just get it on the green. Keep up the great content!

Certainly, when there is no forced carry, plus few play on and into Greens that run at "Tour Speeds" which require reducing the roll out.

Great video. I have a tendency to pull my pitch shots left, do you have any idea on what may be happening there please? I set up with my weight on my lead side and a narrow, slightly open stance.

Initial thing I would look for if I could see you play this, is your path back away from the ball.
If I take the Clubhead to the outside or even straight back, I end up Left.
It's not really a pull, because of the Open stance, just a Straight Shot initially Aimed Left of Target.
My feel is an opening of the clubface, while swinging slightly to the Inside of Target Line.

Great tip but would it be possible to have some slow motion close up footage of the club striking the ball? That would at me visualize what should happen with spinning these shots.

Fantastic piece on chipping, but I have a question that I have not found anyone talks about, that is the double hit. Every once in awhile I will hit a chip and somehow manage to catch the ball and hit it again. I turn my body with the swing and have a good extension with the back of my left hand facing the target., I don't feel like I flip the club, but could that be the reason?

Random question what are you guys wearing on your fore arms ? I often get sore forearms from golf especially from the range is it something to do with that or just a accessory haha

My shot game struggle is where to land my chip shot to allow the ball to roll close to the hole; e.g. from 30 meters away, using a 8 iron or a 9 iron , 56° wedge, in general, how far from the hole should I land the ball?
