    i think it's an important point that melee is one of the very few games that isn't killed off, or even significantly demoted, by its sequels. that alone gives it far more staying power than most

    • @Hibernial
      @Hibernial ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If anything, the sequels keep Melee around as the game that’s the measuring bar to compare and contrast game mechanics. The success of the series future installments, probably to Nintendo’s dismay, has done the opposite in bolstering Melee’s scene and longevity whereas other titles would fold.

    • @Hurtdeer
      @Hurtdeer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigf0ot25 i think ultimate's great. but i also think brawl being kind of ass gave melee a lot of staying power and longevity that otherwise might not have happened.
      Similar to how 3rd Strike still exists because people got stuck with it for a very long time. They feel distant enough from the further sequels that people are acutely aware and fascinated by their differences

      Hell, Ultimate still has flaws Melee didn't.
      A glitchy top tier who can outright cancel YOUR combos mid way through.
      Wavedashing being weak.
      And that Godawful buffer.... Oh, and thanks to fans. Melee has better online now.
      I say all of this as someone who doesn't care for Melee, and played the Hell out of Brawl and Smash 4. (Poor Smash 4.... Bayo and to a lesser extent Cloud killed it. And Brawl was.... A mess, but a highly moddable mess. Like Skyrim. =V)

    melee will keep evolving and changing out of necessity, like it has for the past 20 years, with hardware becoming increasingly obsolete and defunctional, software having bugs which disrupt fair competition and so on. it's a ship of theseus of sorts, but change isn't bad by any means. melee today already looks absolutely nothing like melee from 15 years ago. well sure, the graphics are still the same. rules have changed, players have changed, hardware and software has changed, but it's still melee. in my opinion, melee is the most melee right now, since it is so accessible and the level of competition has pretty much skyrocketed. it's super hard to say anything concrete about the future of digital games, but i strongly believe melee will be left as a very noteworthy outlier in esports history regardless if the game's scene fades away or not.

    i don't think melee will die, the melee community passion for the game is too strong, even compared to other games. judging from my own personal experience (anecdotal evidence, take it with a grain of salt), i started playing melee in 2015 and i loved it sm. i'd play it everyday against a lvl9 20xx fox cpu because i had no friends to play, would go to tournaments just to get smoked by some random techskill demon falco and get 0-2 and i still played it passionately for 2 years. after sometime i started getting interested in other games and from 2018 up until a couple of months ago i didn't play melee or followed the community. and then all of a sudden something reignited that passion for the game and now i came back and it feels like nothing has changed. imo melee has some kind of magic that hooks ppl and no matter how much your interest on it lowers it never dies, it just sits there, waiting for an opportunity to come back and remember you of how great melee really is

    I feel like people say Melee is dying is because they look solely at viewership count on TH-cam top 8/ Grand Finals videos and Twitch viewership numbers without looking at attendance.
    Of course when you compare the EVO numbers in 2016 to now, it’s going to look dramatically less when you view it from that lens.

    A big part of the equation to melee's longevity is what the community was built on.
    eSports die because most of the competitive community was in it for the money. As soon as top players find a game that they can make a better living off of or have an easier time making a living off of it they're going to leave and never look back. Melee players knew from the inception of a melee tournament that they were not going to make a living playing this so the thing that drove them to participate was the desire to prove that they were or could be the best.
    Also the idea that melee majors only Having a couple hundred entrants = the game is dying is insane when you look at the attendance numbers back when ken was playing.

    Been playing for 7 years. This game aint going anywhere. If esports fails, melee will thrive. It literally survived solely through locals and grassroots tournaments for years before hitting the esports scene at all
    Its hilarious because every player mistakes their specific fire for the game dying as the game HAS to be dying

Tribes 1 players don't play tribes 2, tribes 2 players don't play vengeance, and none of them play ascend 😂 and even ascend is further fractured with GOTY vs OOTB 😩

Melee with a different cast, Brawlhalla? Well, just different melee more of movement and dedicated combos like an anime fighter instead of melee's true simple combos... Melee is the SSF2T of platform fighters, it won't die... it just gets unpopular at times

    Melee was dying then M2K revived it, then it was dying again then Armada revived it. Then Hbox dominated for a while and ironicly Hbox dominating revived melee as people wanted to see him lose, Melee does seems to be changing though.
    The era of the game being this awesome community, niche and unknown forums and quricky personailties. It's becoming very simple sadly.
    As much as people hate Leffen he's needed, imagine a television series about a hero with no villains. We need bad people like leffen, we need misundertood like hbox, we need ego sociopathic people like Mango.
    When Armada quit a decent chunk left.
    And we need people like Amsa, Axe.

    as someone who is from the smash community, knows a lot about melee and its lore and "new tech" or old resurfaced tech that has been found in the fabled "slippy era" and unironically likes all the games to some extent, competitively melee has been bankrupt of hype and new innovation for years and should die because the game's competitive scene has been hurting the smash community for years because it "needs to stay alive and be side-by-side with the new smash game" no the fuck it doesn't. Its the same for those other old games, games like these are not perfect and can grow to infact be inferior to new games like Smash Ultimate and Street FIghter 6, the ONLY reason why so many arguments happen about tech, the story lines in comparison to new games, and "how addicting it is or isn't" is because of nostalgia. Some people when they grow up with something have a hard time letting it go and in esports I've noticed that gets magnified to 1000 because "Oh look I found all these people back in the day who loved this game like I did, and I just want to infect the world with that feeling that I had when I met those people for the first time because they are my closest friends even today" stop associating how you got to know someone to the game, that can literally happen with ANY game, melee and other old ass games are not special. I've been around esports for more then a decade bro, this game ain't that special like the people who love it so much make it seem and what I'm actually saying is that it is okay if it dies, or at least it should be but then videos like these get made and people think that the game is unkillable which just gives that community like an ego boost which they don't need cause their game has lasted 3x longer then any old game in gaming history which as a smasher again I find that to be unfair to other communities like Guilty Gear and King of Fighters that deserved the spotlight for their best entries way more then melee because those are way more technical and faster games and those fanbases are way more wholesome.
    Cause smash people suck, and I know cause I've intimantly been apart of this shit since the brawl days. Bad video.

    I don't think it's dying, but interest in entertainment that isn't a movie or series as a whole has likely gone down since the last generation. AAA gaming almost tries to get people sick of playing games while trying to appeal to the youngest audience possible. Melee will earn a few players from that, but overall gaming isn't quite what it used to be.
    Slippi helps a lot, but unfortunately it also leaves a bad impression as people can be pretty toxic on there as opposed to irl events lol. If I played Slippi before my first local I'd begin to have second thoughts...
    One other thing to consider is SF6 which is blowing up rn haha. It might just be melee players trying to get into that rather than leaving melee for the long-term.

    Melee is in a bit of an L period right now where Slippi has been out for a while and not much has changed, multiple top players like Wizzrobe and Plup and Mango barely show up / try, and players like SluG are just straight up quitting. The rest of the people playing are mostly bracket demons for other people so it feels like the matches are very predictable right now as well. @@TrifSmash Leffen has shown that he can win majors if he gets Hbox and Zain in top 8 just a year ago and a 50:50 Fox ditto can just go both ways.
      Same with Wizzy beating Jmook after going to game 5 last time they played only for him to lose again to Plup.
      I kind of agree with him since my enjoyment as a spectator is also at an alltime low with half of our top 10 never showing up so that we only see the same exact matches with little to no anomalies.
      Jmook beating a washed up Hbox was probably the highlight of the year but most sets are just the same matchups of top 15 players or a random top 30 Fox main + non of the current best players having a weight comperable to mang0 and Hbox in popularity.
      I can tell it to you only from my perspective but ever since aMSa and Jmook finally won something and the whole Panda and bts collapse watching Melee just feels kinda empty.
      From Summit being gone, almost every vgbc event getting canceled, Cody losing his shot at rank 1 again by not being able to attend, mang0 streaming more Valo and SF6 into throwing his next tournament combo, Hbox still not trying to finally grind again, EU being dead af, Leffen just winning randomly without even practicing for weeks, the constant drama and twitter arguments and still no one entering online tournaments but a select few top 30 players and Cody it all just feels so idk finished?
      Summit 11 was the greatest tournament of all time, Zain finally got his rank 1, Jmook isn't a silver surfer anymore, aMSa finally won majors and Hbox got out of his win drought so if all my desires for me the spectator are met what else is there to watch for?

    I wonder how many people like myself just washed out of watching competitive melee once slippi dropped. I didn't have any real way to play online before that, but theres a direct correlation, for me at least, of slippi coming out and me no longer caring at all about the competitive scene.

    People don't play Melee because it's the new, big thing, or because esports orgs pump hundreds of thousands of dollars into high profile tournaments. They play it because it's just a damn good game that never gets old.

    I don’t know that I’d ever consider melee would outright die if it wasn’t for Nintendo. Anytime it starts to seem like the community has gotten a new gust of wind, Nintendo comes in a cuts the wings off.

  • @zachariemelanson485
    @zachariemelanson485 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only way Melee would die is if someone finally cracks the formula on how to create a game with all the similar attractive features Melee has and improves on it. No other game has really come close to that, which is why the Melee community never migrated to another game. The smash 4 community was probably as diehard as the Melee community, but migrated to Ultimate because in general it had what Smash 4 had but improved on it. No one's done that for Melee since it was released over 20 years ago. Melee players need their fix, so if they can't get that anywhere else, they'll go back to Melee!

    • @samt3412
      @samt3412 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even if they did that, I think there's an extreme attachment to Melee itself, flaws and all. Even if Smash 6 is essentially Melee but better and HD, they're still playing Melee because it's Melee.

    • @zachariemelanson485
      @zachariemelanson485 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@samt3412 You're absolutely right! I love Melee so much its stupid lol. But what I'm saying is a game that would resemble Melee would undoubtedly have a part of the community migrate to that game, which would shrink the Melee sceen, but it probably wouldn't kill Melee completely, that's for sure. I mean some people still play Brawl lol, so Melee would definitely still be somewhere

    I'll never stop playing Melee. 50,000+ 0.5 KOs with Samus. Over 12,000,000 Damage with her and will continue to rise. P.s. Always play 0.5 damage ratio. People don't realize this is the actual Professional level.

    Even if every single major, supermajor and even regional-sized tournament were to disappear, Melee will still survive. The game was built on the backs of grassroot communities. Because of that, I don't think it will ever truly die. In short, go to your locals.
