Amsa is literally the anime protagonist of melee. A skinny Japanese kid traveling half way across the world to take on the best of the best while working as a salary man and finally wins a supermajor after 10 years of grinding with a mid tier character.

Amsa gets my vote for Melees protagonist. Dude literally jumped into the Melee scene with a character everyone said was not viable... And made him Viable. If you jumped into A Melee anime and followed his adventures. You'd have just as good of a time as watching Him as any anime with a crazy ass underdog story. The melee Gods the "God Slayer" the new generation. The story that couldn't write itself.. literally writes itself

Mango is the main character of the beginning of Melee. Ken and Mew2King are the greats before his time that in the first season he has to train and rise up to defeat them. Then Armada became the newcomer in season 2 to try and take down our main character. Followed by his side kick Leffen. Then later gets double teamed with the help of HungryBox in Season 3. After the defeat of Mango in Season 4, HBox would take over the world for a long time. Then the reboot starting at season 5 with aMSa and Zain and Cody and JMook, we find our main character and the rival that defeated him and his first rival either dying or retiring from battle at their old age. Still strong but not as strong as our new characters
To answer the last part, Mango has never been my favorite character in the Melee anime. I just think he really is what the story follows the most. I would say HBox or aMSa or JMook are my favorite to watch
I always thought ken was the real og, the trailblazer that set the stage for everyone else to follow. It's like he founded the kingdom of smash melee, with mew2king, mang0, armada, ppmd, hbox, zain, amsa, etc following afterwards. Ken was gen 1 (or perhaps gen 0 the prequel), five gods gen 2/1, now it's gen 3/2
@@linuslaw9648 I think that if they start with Ken in season 1, then he would fit better as an antagonist because of how dominant he was. Not sure who to make the protagonist, though, but hear me out. To make him a protagonist that we really want to root for, would be to make his story a prequel.
Ken's story would end with EVO 2007, where he gets sent to losers by Mango, who we already know the future success of. Which adds to the suspense, while still making the inevitable loss more expected. Then, Ken wins the tournament with a losers run that includes knocking out Mango in a rematch in losers finals.
The end would be him reminiscing on his matches with Mango. Seeing a kid with such potential and passion made him realize the impact he has made on the game's future and feels more comfortable to retire and pass on the torch (dramatizing here lol, but works better for the narrative). Once again, knowing the outcome of Melee's success would make this hold so much more weight.

I wouldn't call him the protagonist of melee as a whole but season 5 of melee followed his gradual heel face turn from villain protagonist to anti-hero to full protagonist lol

Mang0 is pretty much not just the main character , he is Melee :
- He played against every single Top player at their peak , Ken , Azen , Chudat , PC Chris , M2K , Armada , Hbox , PPMD , Leffen , Zain , iBDW , Jmook , Wizzrobe , and I could go on..
- Mang0 even found success with 3 different characters and brought them to the top.
- Goes out of his way to give us WAY TOO many memorable sets. Bro even went Marth vs Armada and beat him at FD twice at WTFOX 2016
- You can give me a Top 10 best losers Melee runs of all time , and Mang0 would be in at least 5 of them
- He plays and wins "the way he wants" , he will live by his believes and die on them.
- His longevity is something to admire and see , he have many chances on quitting like in 2014 after winning Big House 4
- Mang0 was there to challenge M2K when he was the best, defend NA from the Swedish invasion , challenge Hbox at his peak , was there to compete to Zain to the very limit , and much more
- Mang0 also carries the narratives and story lines of Melee. Either he is a contender , a wild card , or just a buster that ends up 17th , whenever he wins , its a magical moment.

I think Cody is the current protagonist for me with Zain, Jmook and moky being the main recurring rivals, people like mang0 and Hbox being the loved old protagonists who take a more reserved role this time and Plup and Leffen who attend nothing until they randomly pop up and just place well more the villains for me.
Cody beating Plup in TBH11 final was the best outcome for me tbh not because i dislike Plup but rather because he stood for everything i was against everything he stood for at this moment (bracket luck and getting rewarded for barely entering) while Cody was the opposite.
Everyone has a other perspective on the game that make them cheer for and against certain people and i think that makes this wide selection of interesting top players so great in Melee.

There are many protagonists in melee. Whoever is THE protagonist usually depends on what genre you're going for and what part of melee you're looking at.

Mango is the main character of melee, that's a fact. The only other one i would accept could be amsa, but even for that im not sure. I mean, mango litteraly defeated the top 1 world of each era, he's older as a player than anyone else and is a top 5 world every year since 2008 (with 3 differents characters), being one of the favorite player of the crowd at every major he enter. who else can be a better protagonist than him ? Nobody.

@@bongibot1104you can argue mango and hbox both had character arcs, hell they might even have more character arcs just due to how long they’ve been playing the game. Their ride to the top, the god era and the rise of the new generation and then trying to maintain their relevance.
I think melee is cool because everyone can be seen as a protagonist because everyone is on their personal journeys that live in an ever shifting scene

Idk who the current protag is now, but it certainly doesn't feel like its IBDW rn. Big House is usually the biggest, most hype tourney, but even though he went on a historic run, the win or he himself just doesn't translate to hype, or attracts attention or evoke emotion the way literally any other top 10 player would. The tourney didn't tap into the magic that a super major usually carries. He's not particularly charasmatic, and his play style is extremely bread n butter to the point he feels like the Fox equivalent of Hbox. Cody ain't a protag, or at least doesn't feel like one.
I do really like the message at the end of the video and do agree with it, but also I'm a horrible nerd on the internet and as such feel compelled to answer who I think gives off the biggest main character vibes atm, and honestly I've gotta give it to cody. like, all time mang0 has the biggest main character vibes, but last year he had a ton of shit thrown at him all year, and then to top it off he list his org. then, beginning of this year he's looking pretty good, and then his org implodes again, and he can't find a new one because esports is fucked. and despite it all he just claws his way through, without a team for basically the entire year, and is one of the 2 best players in the world despite everything seeming to be against him (including fucking cancer). like, cody is legitimately fucking incredible and anyone saying that melee doesn't have good storylines is just admitting that they haven't been paying attention
