The pba celebrity matches made bowling look like a carnival game yet it’s one of the more popular telecasts and does the best at attracting non bowlers to watch. Who cares how bowling looks. Non bowlers don’t complain about whether it’s on strings or not and they are the people we should be trying to attract to our sport.

Now string pins, people complain. A few will stop bowling, but most avid bowlers will keep bowling. It's just too much fun.

I see your point. However the game has been in trouble for a long time. I started in the 1960's. The public participation was incredible. Most bowling centers had double shift everyday of the week. Today that's not so. For many reasons , not just string pins & the other reasons you mentioned. I can go very deep as to the root causes of the decline.

Haven't bowled in quite some time (15+ years) and I went and got fitted with a new ball today and threw some games to test out my skills. Just like riding a bike after the first game of 158. Found my stance and arrows & shot 214, 226 & 203. But the interesting thing was this house was my house back in the day and they are now running string pins. It certainly does feel weird visually and they seem to not hit as hard (left quite a few flat 10's) but was still the fun I was looking for. It will be interesting to see how things progress regarding these string pins. From what I've seen, this is the way to save costs in maintenance and labor. Darren, you got such great form bro!

The muscle memory is there, but it takes a minute to remember the choreography. Welcome back to the sport! Just like 15 years has changed for ball technology, lane patterns and such, string pins (USBC Certified ones) will be non-noticeable for leagues/pros with a variance of 1-1.5 pins max. The first few variations of strings are wildly different than the newest ones (you probably seen plenty of old string pins videos from 1-2 years ago, that's how new the USBC Verified strings are, that 1-2 year old videos are old)

I've been bowling on string pins for the past 2 years and my average is 2-3 pins higher on the strings than on free fall pins. Definitely not a big deal. A good high
flush hit will strike on either type of pins, but I would agree that a sloppy hit has a better chance of striking on free fall pins. On the other hand, a nasty split is
easier to convert with string pins.

String pins are absolute garbage, and you can’t convince me otherwise. You can shorten and lengthen the string length all you want to make them “certified”, but as long as there’s still a string physically attached to the pin, it will alter the pinfall. It makes the already dying sport of bowling look even more like a joke. String pins belong in the arcade, not in certified bowling centers.

Strings greatly affected game play. The alleys who had strings went out of business over the ones who didn't. This is the last gasp of the bowling industry.

One of my houses made the switch. It was bad bc they were not able to hire a mechanic for the longest time and the pinsetters were terrible (nail in the coffin- last league night before the install, I had 5 racks with missing pins in a row followed by raining pins). Strings are less forgiving and people are complaining because they don't want to think they suck as bowlers, and honestly forces better shotmaking. You can't go light, and you can't jam the ball into the pocket without letting it roll otherwise there's deflection. I get punished for getting to the pocket and not letting the ball roll (seeing too much oil/hooking too late) with a lot of pocket 5 pins at best, 4-5-7s, and worst case scenarios the 5-7. Also helps me internalize that most messengers are actually off bad shots too.

@@kenkonarzewski9961 I actually do have a bad experience with that kind of string pin technology in duckpin bowling. I rolled a strike one time, and the strings were having a hard time keeping the pins up upon resetting them, since a few of them keep falling down when they land on the lane. I'm not taking any chances in playing 10 pin bowling that has that string pin setup, because it might run into the same problem that the duckpin lane had. Plus, the unnatural pin action when you knock down the pins, and the fact that the strings could get tangled up if you add too much strength to your roll.
That's why I considered String pin setups to be an abomination to bowling, because I've seen the problems with it first hand, and I'm not gonna take any chances in bowling in center that relies on string pins as a lazy way to cut costs.

I'll say it again: String pins will keep recreational, non-competitive bowling in existence. That however, is the only thing being "saved". Centers want open play and birthday parties because that's where the money is. Leagues and tournaments don't keep the lights on anymore. The serious competitors who are still around though, those who actually view bowling as a sport and not just the occasional leisure activity 3 times a year, will run from string pins like the plague because they are a pale imitation of free-fall machines. Those who can't tell the difference won't care... but there will be plenty who do. If you're not among them, then salúd. Enjoy your strings, and bowling in the dark with lasers and little dancing pancakes projected onto the lane... because before too long, that's all that'll be left.
Can't practice if they won't turn the lights on, and there are Bowleros all over the place that do exactly that all day long. THAT is what will drive competitive bowlers away, and take the SPORT of bowling with it. But thank the Good Lord we'll have "saved" an activity to occupy little kids on a rainy Saturday, and 20-somethings on date night... and to hell with the rest of us. Peace.
