I think that string pins for sure have less carry but I do think at some point the carry issue becomes a mental thing and you start to blame every nine count on the string pins even when it would be the same result on normal pins
Wow it looks like that center has got it close i did think that i never so wood flying across the deck for anyone What Boog said from his perspective was spot on
String pins remind me of the heavier gold pins used back in the late 90s more than that resemble strings. Barely any carry and overall a bit harder than freefall
After seeing this video, and having bowled against string pins myself, I've decided to keep bowling if strings become the norm. Boog made a very valid point on now having to be more accurate, and the playing field is more level.
I’m curious, when you guys bowl on string pins do you look for exactly the same shot as you do on free fall pins? In terms of angle into the pocket and location at the pocket. I mean, obviously we’re trying to get it flush in the pocket every shot but from what I’ve seen, half pocket hits carry horribly on string pins because you don’t get great messenger action. E.g., a shot on free fall pins where the 1 pin becomes a messenger and takes out the 10 probably wouldn’t strike on string pins. So I’m wondering if bowlers have to take that kind of thing into account when they’re bowling on string pins. I’d also be really interested to see how things like angle into the pocket and ball speed affect carry on string pins vs free fall pins. I feel like there has to be some sort of correlation there that could give you an advantage in competitions, right?
I think my favorite feature of string pins is when they land on the pin deck after being hit by a 15lbs ball going 18mph and do nothing. Amazing pin action.... The future of bowling is looking bright.
I bowl on strings at my alley and it's tough but when you hit that sweet spot you can score pretty good but i won't never get use to it cuz i love the free fall pins too much.. also not all alleys will convert to strings
I watched a few hours of the Blufton regional. Averages were not much different. Did see one messenger. Going to bowl on strings next month. Not expecting much difference since I rarely get a messenger.
I think Mr. Krol figured it out. String pins will equalize bowlers taking away the advantage of being good. Until now the purpose of technological advancement (balls, synthetic lanes, grips, automatic scorers, velcro soles, removable thumb holes, etc.) was to make bowling better. The purpose of string pins is to eliminate the mechanic job to make the alley more money. Yet the mechanic job is the most important job at the alley. They don't just setup fallen pins during league. They oil the lanes which is the critical difference between good and bad alleys! They make sure the ball returns, pin setters, HVAC, bathroom, bars, and other resources are working. It reminds me of the golden goose fairy tale.
It’s not to get rid of the mechanics 🤦. It’s to allow the mechanics to work on the other things you mentioned. Not too mention there’s hardly any certified mechanics to work on the old free fall machines anymore as well
@@jeremygreene994 Notice how your excuses aren't about making bowling better, they are about money. If you aren't willing to pay you won't find the employees. Honest question, what is "better" with free fall? Is it better because of messengers and pins move more overall? Because if it's just harder with pinstringss, then it's not about it being better or worse... it's just about wanting the easiest strikes. I personally don't care if the game gets harder, I think it's good. Less 300s is more competitive. Strings behavior is less random than free fall.
@naumen6508 Exactly, we don't want the game to get easier! I saw a TH-cam video where the goal was to make the 7-10 split using string pins, which they did in two dozen attempts. I have been bowling for 45 years in two leagues per week and the 7-10 has been picked up three times. Even in televised PBA events the 7-10 has only been made a handful of times, and not in years. Just saying I'm going to pick up the 7-10 split with free fall pins is ridiculous because it is so hard. String pins will destroy bowling and its profitability.
our alley has switched to String Pings as well..what I personally realized is that you have: a) much less mixer strikes after light hits b) much less messengers and c) you have to control your angles to the pockets really well otherwise you'll always leave something. I feel like I saw exactly the same in your video or am I mistaken?
You can’t. The pocket is actually a tad smaller because the rack is set correctly each time so you have to be more accurate with your shots. This is my personal experience as well.
If I've learned anything from having to play with string pins at my local centre its that the mental side of the game is a MUST because you can throw a pocket ball which would give you a strike on standard pins but will be left with a random 7 or 10 pin (depending on left or right handed), or even a split. My 10-pin spare game is solid though because of it haha. See Keven left quite a few 7 pins and had that *sigh* of disbelief. I always joke if we can switch to 9-pin no tap half way through a game playing on strings xD
Great video guys! I have bowled on strings with a Black Widow 3.0 Solid and I did alright. My question is this. Since you guys throw more revs than me (375rpm, 17.2mph), please let me know if the strings often get tangled. For myself, it was pretty messy, but I wasn't bowling on certified strings. Also, did you get permission from that singer to use that Awesome music??? 😎
My experience with string pins is the light hit doesnt carry, you cant just throw the head pin into the wall and get the mixer or messenger. The high flush hit destroys, but a little too high is a split.
Check out the pba channel. Just had a regional at EZ bowl in bluffton on Qubica Edge String pins. Great tournament and great machines! I’ve bowled on them countless times and they are great.
So, what Keven said in his Facebook post is that string pins make the game harder since there's not as much carry as it is with free fall pins... OK, I believe it, but if the reason to change to strings is to keep the bowling alleys alive (financially), this is incredibly stupid. The most income comes from casual/league players, who really enjoy those lucky breaks and scream in happiness when they get a turkey strike... then this new change, as per their words, eliminate that factor, and therefore takes away a big part of the enjoyment , again, for the casual player... the one who's really keeping the business alive... so no, I just don't think this is a good change for the sport, maybe in the short term, aliviates the financial struggles and reduce some cost, but in the long run.... I hope you guys know what you're supporting.
Well sure strikes are a bit harder since there’s no pin action but it makes splits so easy to hit as well thanks to the strings that sometimes knock the pins down
Just like everything else Bowlers are just going to have to make adjustments. I mean it's getting to the point where centers cannot pay a mechanic over a hundred thousand dollars to work on the machines. I am actually looking forward to bowling on string pins
String pins force you to be more accurate. You can't just have crazy power and miss 5 boards left or right. Bowled on both now for a couple of years, and string pins help you be a better bowler.
The strings didn't appear to be Boog's problem. The oil seemed to kick his ass. Been there. There's a tournament I have went to a few times and every single time the oil just takes me out of my game. I can never seem to adjust. I averaged probably 50 pins under my average last year over 10 games, so yes I was 500 pins under my average for a weekend tournament.
I really dislike how many shots on string pins just leave pins sitting on the deck. It's not natural to see that almost ever, let alone regularly. Eugh.
I've bowled on string pins since the 2021-22 season and my average is still 195. Shot a nice 245 game yesterday, though, but the first 2 games were horrible. Only when the lanes finally broke down was there a playable shot. Before that, it was grease city. Wish that the owner would stop with the oil experiments. Just pick ONE type of oil and go with that. I can adjust IF there isn't a constant stream of different oils and patterns out there. Not anywhere near a pro bowler but most of my league friends are saying the same thing. I do like that the string pins are a more reliable system and have much less down time than the more complex free fall pin systems that need a mechanic or two on duty at all times.
My biggest problem with these string pins is will people watch it. Now it feels more luck based in a way if a string hits a pin for a split conversation. If bowling wants to be taken seriously, luck like strings flying is not the way to go.
So I watched the step ladder finals, and I did not like how all the different leaves were left with those string pins. I would rather watch regular pens.
The ones that hate strings should just quit now. Whiners. Can’t throw half-asses shots and throw a messenger around? Bummer. Strings will make people square up at the pocket. Less pin action, more split conversions. Cry babies that don’t really love the game, just love complaining and being keyboard warriors
It’s not about being cry baby or anything don’t be hating just cause people have a reason to dislike string pins, besides even if it makes strikes harder, it also makes splits easier to hit become of the string themselves.
Everyone says “oh 2 handers carry more than thumb bowlers” now we go to string pins those same guys “I can’t carry”. String pins even out all of the hits. What hits you don’t get in messengers u get with string hits. I’ve bowled 2 tournaments (on pattern) on strings and yes the carry is questionable, but EVERYONE has that issue
Honestly I don’t love string pins but I’m really interested in how they’ll affect competitive bowlers specifically. Based on your comment, to you it would be fair to say that “power bowlers” have a much smaller advantage on string pins, right? When you compare them, string pins reward accuracy more than power, and free fall pins reward power more than accuracy?
It's still bowling, and everyone is on a even playing field. Just gotta throw it good and throw it better, plain and simple. I've bowled on strong pins and there's not much different so I'm all in, if you don't like it, then don't bowl
If strings can make it cheaper to operate bowling lanes and cheaper for people to bowl it’s a big win for the sport. They might not hit the same but they still hit their own way. You guys are good and within no time you’ll have adjusted.
Bowling prices would lower if inflation lowered. Other than that no center with string pins would go lower just because their operating cost is lower. Still have to pay the overhead, payroll and all the bills!
If approved by whoever makes the decision that string pins are to be in all centers I'm quitting. What's next usbc the doing away with all reactive bowing balls? Its like trying to knock down tree stubs with a 15 pound ball. That's my 2 cents worth. But if bowlers have to work this hard to carry they will quit
Strings are on i rather a house goes to strings then close. The lower maintenance part is the mechanic the bowling alley cant afford the high rate it takes to keep them. They can make more money in other fields with that knowledge.
String pins should not be used for anything except children’s parties and maybe practice with money involved bowlers should be absolutely nowhere near them
I stopped watching when it was on ESPN because they did such a horrible job. Fox does a little better except for the idiotic camera angle from behind where you can't see the ball going down the lane unless they show a replay.
Agreed. It’s hard to watch a professional athlete bowl on these. The PBA50 tour did it and it was noticeable different. But the PBA members cannot speak out against them.
Watching this video show me how much of a joke string pins are. There was hardly any pin action. Several of the pocket hot would have carried if they were free fall pins.
The ones that hate strings should just quit now. Whiners. Can’t throw half-asses shots and throw a messenger around? Bummer. Strings will make people square up at the pocket. Less pin action, more split conversions. Cry babies that don’t really love the game, just love complaining and being keyboard warriors More worried about strings than the inequality between left and right? Or the problems with equipment ? There’s some REAL problems with bowling and rope isn’t one
We gotta fight this if the pro's won't do it for us. If you're on a league switching to string pins, leave to another center if there's a real alley nearby. If your center is thinking of switching, voice your opinion in a respectful way that you'll take your business elsewhere. Left my old center that switched and their league is half the size now. Give the real bowling centers your money.
"I don't get the hits that I usually get...But guess what? No one's getting the hits. Left-handers, right-handers, two-handers. We're all on the same playing field now." This is either a tacit admission that free-fall pinsetters somehow favor a certain type of player, or it's a complete misrepresentation of the arguments against stringpins. Literally nobody has ever argued that stringpins aren't fair. I personally think it's very telling that every PBA pro or spokesman that tries to convince people that stringpins are fine avoids the biggest complaint of bowlers in regards to the topic. That complaint is that the "lower operational cost" argument is pure bullshit. It's a factual statement, but they are implying that those lower costs will somehow result in lower prices for bowlers, and we ALL know that's bullshit. All it will do is raise profits for bowling center owners, and to be quite honest, I don't give a shit about that. The CEO for Bowlero, Thomas Shannon, makes over $3 million a year. You want to cut costs so badly, start there. Don't change something fundamental about the game because of your insatiable and unending greed.
Actually the smaller houses will benefit the most because they may not do enough business for a full time mechanic. A lot of time, the owner is the mechanic.
The salary of the CEO of the corporation that owns less than 15% of the bowling centers in the US isn't driving the cost of bowling. The general economy is. Increased minimum wages, increased cost of supplies and utilities. Increased cost of food. Increased cost of real estate, etc. None of that is Shannon's fault nor is it controlled by him.
@@RysterARCEE If this argument was being made by small centers, I would be more sympathetic. Instead, we have the PBA (which is owned by Bowlero, and by extension Thomas Shannon) beating us over the head with it. It just rings hollow when C-suite execs with multi-million dollar salaries lecture us about rising costs.
Love ya Boog but you're gonna need to back that one up, lmao. I watched most of this entire event. I personally don't mind bowling on them myself but I don't feel like they have a place at the professional level.
Watching string pins is well, hard to watch. It makes the sport seem less instead of more. You can thank Bowlero for the string pins coming. They own the PBA. And strings make it cheaper for their centers and they are by far and away the largest chain so there you go.
I stand with Thomas here. At the place I roll for league 30 or so lanes are standard and like 20 are string. League bowls on standard, casuals bowl on strings. Word.
It says on the masking unit “Brunswick” but that’s ruining the bowling alley with string pins. That pin supposed to be about 3 pounds - 6 ounces or 10 ounces. Adding the problem with the strings is making it so worse, the PBA needs to step it up by eliminating the strings on pins. Even I’m from Storm Bowling, I respect a lot of bowling friends who are from Storm, Roto Grip & 900 Global, they’re the family of bowling. And you see them in amusement places like Bowl 360 in New York. That’s going to cause a lot of controversy if this continues to mess up the PBA bowlers & PWBA. Numbers will not go higher & you seen Quibica-AMF strings on pins. PBA bowlers that they talk about it & they’re not here to lose their chances of winning, but no strings attached for higher scores without strings. I’ve been bowling with pro-am games since 2008 & my mentor/pro-am partner is Sean Rash. It’s not about being so biased about this. It’s about what opinions are made & I respect their opinions. To me, string pins are amusement made, not PBA sanctioned made. 🎳
Welcome to the carnival!

These aren’t Brunswick ones. Only the masking units are. These machines are Qubica Edge String machines which are usbc certified ones.
Pure garbage
String pins are the biggest gaslighting of all time. Garbage.
Watching this video show me how much of a joke string pins are. There was hardly any pin action. Several of the pocket hot would have carried if they were free fall pins.
String lanes are shit. I'll quit if they bring them to my house. Have a good day.
More worried about strings than the inequality between left and right? Or the problems with equipment ? There’s some REAL problems with bowling and rope isn’t one
String pins turn bowling into an arcade game, get rid of it.
NOPE !
This is the stupidest thing they ever thought of...even worse than cosmic crap 🙄🙄🙄
Bowling thinks it will save money no way
Not going to entertain this garbage...no matter what JR Raymond says about them!
String pin bowling is so boring to watch, no messengers, no nothing exciting... Should not be allowed on the PBA....
Really skillful bowling is officially DEAD, the cheap puppet bowling for the lazy bowlers is now born
"I don't get the hits that I usually get...But guess what? No one's getting the hits. Left-handers, right-handers, two-handers. We're all on the same playing field now."
This is either a tacit admission that free-fall pinsetters somehow favor a certain type of player, or it's a complete misrepresentation of the arguments against stringpins.
Not much pin action
Love ya Boog but you're gonna need to back that one up, lmao.
I watched most of this entire event. I personally don't mind bowling on them myself but I don't feel like they have a place at the professional level.
Watching string pins is well, hard to watch. It makes the sport seem less instead of more. You can thank Bowlero for the string pins coming. They own the PBA. And strings make it cheaper for their centers and they are by far and away the largest chain so there you go.
That was terrible. The way pin carry is. Id average 180 on these 😭😭😭😂😂😂🤣
string pins are an abomination. It's actually rather sad that you guys are trying to normalize them and desensitize people to them.
Amen 🙏🏿
Maybe they know what they're talking about being professional bowlers? Instead of all the house league keyboard warriors on here?
@Phille900 or maybe the PBA is owned by Bowlero who don't care at all about actual bowlers or the sport of bowling and only about profit margins 🤷
I think sting pins stink!!! I will quit bowling if this becomes the norm!!!
I stand with Thomas here. At the place I roll for league 30 or so lanes are standard and like 20 are string. League bowls on standard, casuals bowl on strings. Word.
@@TheLegendOfMrDGaming That is how it should be, a mix of both.
Its llike a caraval game crap the end of bowling
Music is so bad
if Boog things string pins are "great for the sport" then Boog is not "Great for the sport."
Boog saying "this is great for the sport" only means that Boog isn't great for the sport.
I was watching the pba show at stopped after 5 minutes. String pins suck
This sucks end string pins
