This is my reaction to Depeche Mode Sister Of Night. This is also my first watching Sister Of Night, Depeche Mode Ultra Album 1997 Reaction

This was the first song recorded during the Ultra recording sessions. This was still bevor Dave's cardiac arrest and drug rehab. He wasn't able to sing it in a row since his voice has been extremely damaged by the drugs, so they had to record the singing in small chunks and put them together in the end. I'm still impressed how great his vocals sound in this song, given those facts.

Tour of the Universe?
History tells that it took them severals weeks to record the vocals for this song, because at the time Dave was still in bad shape and into his "thing". The whole vocals are cut from several takes. Dave said in an interview, that he still hears his fear and uncertainty in his vocal performance here.
This was actually the first song they recorded for Ultra - and it was the first time the other 2 members really realized Dave's state at the time.
Wasn't it also before Dave died from an Overdose?
Yeah, after the recording of this song Dave returned to LA and that was the time he overdosed at the Sunset Marquis hotel and was dead for several minutes until the paramedics brought him back to life. He went from hospital directly to jail and that basically was the turning point for him. He got clean and sober, took vocal lessons and got out stronger than before.
This is a favourite of mine. So beautiful.

This is one of my favorite songs on Ultra. Dave's voice is damn good here.

Dave Gahan told MSN Music Central:
"'Sisters Of Night' is actually my favorite on the album, in terms of the vocal on there. It kind of glides along. I sometimes find it really hard to listen to myself, but on that particular song, I would say that's really kind of "me," if that makes any sense. It's a really honest vocal. I particularly got into the song quite a bit."
Martin Gore told POP magazine Sweden in February 1997:
"'Sister of Night' was the only vocal track Dave managed to complete during several weeks in New York last spring. He came to the studio every morning but sounded horrible. I asked if he was alright and he said that everything was OK. He continued to lie like that, day after day."
Andy Fletcher told the 28th April 1997 issue of of Hits magazine:
"The closest it came to coming apart was after the New York recording session, where we got one vocal out of Dave in six weeks. He was in a typical state where he was incapable of singing. He went out to Los Angeles to try to sort himself out. We heard two weeks later on the radio that he'd OD'd. We felt that at this point we were hitting our heads against the wall and getting absolutely nowhere. I did a lot of searching to decide what to do with the band because at one point I thought it was better for David if the band didn't exist anymore because it wasn't doing him any good."

This is actually one of my absolute favourite DM songs. During the 90s, one of my closest friends introduced me to the music of DM, and we went to see them live together in 1994 when they toured Australia. Shortly after that, my friend tragically died in what we believe may have been suicide. Ultra came out after that, and this song always represents this friend to me as there were so many lyrics that could be related to them. It is kind of ironic that when I went to Amsterdam to see DM on the last tour for Memento Mori (a name relating to death), this song made an appearance for the first time in decades and it felt like my friend was sending a nod to me to let me know they're still with me.
Lyrically, 'flesh that burns, hunger that will descend' can all be references to addiction which, sadly, relates very much to my friend.
This is a favorite of mine. Love the harmonies with Martin singing over the top. I've always felt it was about a Lady of the Evening (Prostitute).... But could be about a one night stand.

There's a lovely live version of this song sung by our beloved Martin at the "One Night In Paris" concert in 2001. I love when Martin sings this, more than when Dave sings it. Just a personal preference. Martin can go from tenor to baritone with such ease.
Yeah, Dave was in really bad shape when they were recording this. These vocals you hear in this are combination of several takes. But at the same time - Maybe one the most beautiful vocals he has ever sang.
Dave told in one interview that his voice was damaged and so he taken vocal coach (Evelyn Halus) lessons (for the first time in carrier) during recording Ultra album. It is why his vocals sounds differently & smooth on this record.
Loved your observations. There are so many amazing songs on ultra, and this one used to blend in for me and didn't stand out. But I've learned to appreciate it more.... the up for interpretation lyrics and atmosphere make this classic DM. Not to mention Dave's voice, and the story behind its recording which others have mentioned.

I take this song as a girl who thrives off night life, and when it comes to day she feels ugly and insecure about herself.
Also I believe this song was only sung by Martin live (album version and also acoustically, which is incredible) until this years tour, Dave finally sang it!

This song is not about vampires. It’s about feeling weakness for your addictions in the night when you are all alone. Sister of night is addiction
I do not think I ever got vampires when listening to this one, sometimes you crack me up on your ideas,lol But i think it can be interpreted in many ways really.
On following tours Martin sang a piano version live on stage!
this year, dave sings it, i heard it in my city, bologna, beautiful.
unfortunately there was no tour for this album particularly as Dave was barely coming off suicide attempts and trying to get clean from drugs which all led to his 2 minute death in hospital. so for this record they weren't too sure about touring. but they did do The Singles Tour the following year, where they played several Singles including Ultra's. so after reacting to this album and its B-sides, you can react to that tour I'm talking about, where they have a big change in live sound..becoming more Rockers

WOW! Damn!! I had no idea Dave's voice was in such horrific shape during the recording of this! Well Done Mr. Gahan my friend! I REALLY LIKE the interpretation that it's about vampires. I'd never really thought about the meaning of the lyrics, but his vocals do sound smooth and sultry. I can tell you couple of things though Sepha. On the Special Features "ONE NIGHT IN PARIS" Concert DVD from October 2001, there's a clip of Martin singing the song (Know how much you love it when he sings!) ......plus, you mentioned whales! HaHa-Ha!!! You have Got To listen to the Ambient Whale Mix of WALKING IN MY SHOES .... Very Cool Stuff. Happy Hunting!! Cheers!

My second favorite song of the album. I love every part of it, especially that beginning hard techno like intro that flows into such a soothing atmospheric beat. Personally I think Sister of Night, Personal Jesus and Jezebel are about prostitutes. Thanks for another great reaction brother.

In my opinion this song is about d_r_u_g_s, but i want to believe your idea about vampires, thats new for me.

One of thier bedst songs
This song is really lovely and it seems evident that Dave took some vocal lessons to achieve what is a breathier sound called a head voice, I think. I personally think the lyrics are about a depressed sex worker who feels stuck in having to work this job and can’t find a way out. Who knows? All I know is it’s so calming and beautiful.
Well you have to wait until Blu-ray/DVD (and then wait until someone can upload it to TH-cam) comes out for the Memento Mori which will be in Mexico City this time for a much clearer audio (unless you want to listen/watch to it via someone's phone on one of the nights) and as long it's still on the set list because there is talk of that they will change the set list from the first two legs otherwise you have to wait until Tour of the Universe on the bonus tracks that were from the other date when they played in Barca, Martin sung the song on his encore.
Wait what? Where do you have the information from that this tour's BD will be recorded in Mexico? Can't find anything about this on the web.
@@Simon-fl1tl I listen to My Nerd World, he does a podcast on Star Wars but also Depeche Mode and this week he talked about DVD/Blu Ray release for this tour which he says from his source because the source talked to Peter Gordeno after the Oslo concert, saying that they are going to film the Mexico City concert, didn't ask obviously who's going to direct but we know it's Corbijn, he also talked about set list changes as well because there is talk that Before We Drown could make an appearance and obviously during that talk with Peter, he said he was surprised that it hasn't made it yet to the setlists.
@@jamesrigby789 Holy flurking schnit, this would be a dream come true! I'm flying from Germany to the 3rd Mexico show in September and already can't stand the waiting anymore, and if they record the DVD there now and even put Before We Drown on the setlist, it will leave me speechless.

The song is called "Sister Of Night". Not "Sister Of The Night". ;) I love it and I always get goosebumps because it's so beautiful. I like "ULTRA" even though many fans hate it. Martin sings the song live. (Exiter Tour) I prefer David's version though. Sunny greetings from a German in Bulgaria. :)

Song about drugs, sung by an at the time addict. Dave's voice so patchwork at the time they had to comp the vocals together. A song of contradictions.

2010 is way better than 2001, electronic versions are a lot better than the piano songs.

This is probably the song I like best on Ultra - in competition with "it´s no good" and maybe "the bottom line".
A classic beautiful Depeche mode melody song, in "dark mode", so to speak.
Like you, I also like the sound here. The bent "whale sounds" are beautiful to even beautiful chords.
But I would say that the "industrial" in the intro and in the middle of the song is completely unnecessary and doesn't sound very good to my ears. They could have cleaned that out or made it better.
If you hang out with enough Goth chicks you'll know what it's about.
