    I think it's about shyness. He would like to tell his beloved how he feels about her, but the disease holds his tongue.

    Universally one of their most beloved. I have a cool memory attached to this one. I lived in Taiwan for two years in the early 90s doing a church mission. One night my coworker and I were sitting in an tiny empty train station at the edge of a small village in the rural countryside where we'd literally been helping plant a rice paddy all day waiting for the last train to arrive to get back to our apartment , which was 30 minutes away by rail. It was around 11:15pm and we were probably the only two people still awake in that sleepy "town". Well, we were bored and exhausted but needed to stay awake so the train would pick us up. At those hours in the middle of nowhere, if you aren't on the platform where the train can see you when it arrives sometimes the train won't stop. We both liked singing and we both liked DM and the acoustics were actually good in this little train station. So we are probably the only two American guys that ever belted out Depeche Mode's Shake the Disease by memory acapella at nearly midnight in the tiny hamlet of Fenglin Taiwan. The moral of the story is: the is an awesome song and saved us from sleeping on concrete benches one night in the middle of nowhere Asia.

    What i do like, is that every album they change the style so you never hear the same style songs,,,

    • @chrisherrmann3991
      @chrisherrmann3991 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's very true. It's also one of the biggest criticisms against them. I don't think they would have endured 40 years without changing their style and experimenting with different sounds. That's what has made them so enduring and interesting. We always want to hear what the new sound will be like even if we prefer a certain sound from a different era. Bands die out because they live in the past.

    Surprised you haven’t done this one yet. Definitely one of their best.
    It’s in the top five all time for me… along with about 20 other of their songs ;)
    You didn’t quite get the meaning of the song. He’s not talking too much. It’s the opposite. He wants to be able to express the feelings he has for the one he loves but gets tongue tied and can’t find the words.
    The disease he wants to shake is being able to verbalize how much he cares for her but is unable to. He’s thankful that she understands how hard it it is for him. Nobody knows him as well as she does.

    • @SephPlays
      @SephPlays  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ohh what an interesting meaning of this song. If you see it this way it 100% changes the feeling of the song haha

    • @chrisherrmann3991
      @chrisherrmann3991 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's correct. Martin is expressing his struggle with NOT being able to speak in situations he should because of his shyness. The disease "takes hold of his tongue" and he is unable to express himself like he's like to. On your point Seph, maybe part of the reason he has difficulty is because he's afraid to say the wrong thing. Great reaction, great song.

    Well Seph, thank you for that subject [BTW] I was that kinda person (growing up): least likely to shut up, when I was young, I wasn't much of a talker until later on (it was kinda annoying even at night time), so I guess I should of relate to this song 🎵 along time ago... I compare this [song] to People are people because (like this song 🎵)Dave Gahan also sang the main lyrics while Martin gore sang the chorus part, even if it had word: Understand in the sentence (Help me understand)?... thank you 😊.

    It's definitely a love song. I get lost in the synth melodies, and the industrial sounds and such. These guys were so good, I'm grateful that I was a teen and college kid when DM produced their music.

    Martin Gore in the 1985-08-17 issue of Hitkrant (translated from Dutch):
    "The song tells the story of a one-sided relationship between a girl and a boy. They realize that it is as good as over for them. So it's a poignant song, but not real life. Christine [Friedrich, girlfriend] and I are still doing very well. A breakup is definitely out of the question."
    Gore explained in the 1989-04-15 issue of Melody Maker:
    "Sometimes [the links between songs] are very obvious, there are things like references cos I really like references to other songs. In ‘Shake The Disease’ there’s a reference to another song. You know it says, Now I've got things to do // and I've said before that I know you have too. And in another song [Stories Of Old] it said, Now I've got things to do // you have too. I really like those kind of references."

  • @balovett

    Melodically speaking, this is easily one of Martin's most interesting tunes. The unique cord changes always feel just a little unexpected. This gives the song a subtle unease that mirrors the tortured subject. The samples used throughout are also really interesting, extending the use of some of the same sounds and techniques from SOME GREAT REWARD. I saw Martin do a solo piano performance of this at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles in 2003 that was a real crowd pleaser.
    Regarding your question, "Have you ever been in a situation where you should have shut up but you didn't?" Oh yeah. In the mid-90s I let one of my straight buddies know I was attracted to him. I immediately regretted it. He was super cool and didn't crucify me, for which I was very grateful. We're still friends, and to his credit he's never held it over my head. Just an amazingly mature dude and good friend.
    How about you? Any noteworthy situations where you wish you had kept your mouth shut?

Then we got Violater album in 1990 to go on a loop as well. 1993 songs of faith and devotion when i was a wild guy with a drink and drugs addiction, far from home. I’ve always thought the disease was shyness and introversion. In addition to the “takes hold of my tongue” line there’s also the line “ when I’m not there in spirit I’ll be there” line that introverts can definitely relate to.
