Seph Plays For some reason, people had you listening to the older more obscure stuff before this. If you liked this, you’re going to like their sound from “music for the Masses” and after. That’s music after 1987. Michael Henri has some better suggestions. I also recommend “In Your Room” (the album version), “World in My Eyes”, “Halo”, “Sweetest Perfection” “Clean” etc… The best albums are “Music for the Masses”, “Violator, and “Songs of Faith and Devotion”.
@@ROArecords2 the stuff ive been listening to has been obscure!? What the heck. Why didn't anyone tell me... I mean to be fair they all are still amazing songs. But this comes as a little bit of a shock!
@@SephPlays People just have different tastes, but from your reaction, I think you'll like the later hits that Michael Henri and I suggested. Also, while I have your ear, I would recommend always listening to the album versions of songs first. People will recommend live versions, but if you've never heard the song before, you don't have context and you won't hear the mix as intended. Everyone that says a live version is the best heard the original first.
Hi Seph! Thanks for doing DM reactions. It's wonderful to see you experience them for the first time. I became a DM fan back in 2000 whilst I was on a second date with a girl (DM were her initials) who took me to a gay club in Tijuana, Mexico. She had a male friend who she'd go there with, she told me she would go to enjoy the club atmosphere without getting hit on by guys. Policy of Truth came on while we were on the dance floor. Easily one of the most euphoric moments of my life. I believe I started buying their Albums the next day. As for my lady friend, we dated for a few months and she broke up with me. We're still really good friends to this day, in fact she gave me her ticket for DM last December, I went with her husband! 🖤🖤🖤
My interpretation is they are describing someone being caught in a betrayal multiple times like cheating. The person caught red handed could be described to have promised, “Never again is what you swore the time before.” I think it’s telling the betrayer, “You should have just lied because you said you’d never do this again and I caught you!”
Loving that you're continuing down into DM! Am watching through the past several days since the Blasphemous Rumours vid right now. Yeah, this one isn't as blatantly controversial... but certainly not in line with traditional morality we're pushed; As others have already chatted with you about it's a "shut up or lie when you should, honesty isn't always the best policy" message lol. Glad you're enjoying things so far and finding interesting the Industrial/New-Wave mix they covered. I talked about the romantic/sexual songs in my previous post, on hearing your thoughts and comments on BR and couple songs up into this one... I'm not sure how old you are so how much it relates to your experience growing up, but during the 80s a lot of us DM fans still lived under a daily nuclear war threat and regional violence levels in the world effected as the Cold War was dying out and fluctuating - as well as later the recognition of the AIDS epidemic A taste of it can be found a lot in the background vibe of a Lot of the 80s music whether or not they are darker or upbeat-saccharine on the surface. You'll find a lot of the songs vs now had the a strong underlying pitch of "we could all be dead soon, so we need to hurry" to them whether of good things or negative. Prince, for example, got pretty blunt about it for a while lol. As this is about the DM journey you'll pick that up for sure in there. It fades in intensity during "calmer" decades and is swinging back harder into their music in more recent music.
Very hard to say... I can't place my finger on a specific one at this moment. Maybe after more thought or checking my Spotify favorites marks for song totals on them lol. With their work being quite varied while still being "them" what I'm into most shifts a lot with my moods and life in general when I take a listen.
Go back in time to the 70's and 80's when this song was written. I believe this song is about a bandmate or friend of the band who announced, in his youth, that he is gay. Once announced you cant take it back. He exclaimed his policy of truth to get it off his chest, without realizing the crush of opposition he now had to face with that decision. Life was much better if you lied about your sexual preferences back then. I had a couple of friends experience this same thing in their youth. Once out - the problems just multiply!! Let me know your thoughts!

Examples from the lyrics:
You had something to hide
Should have hidden it, shouldn't you?
Now you're not satisfied
With what you're being put through
You'll see your problems multiplied
If you continually decide
To faithfully pursue
The policy of truth

So groovy. One of their best singles
The curse of the truth teller is having to walk alone. This is what this song implies, as a cautionary tale.
Ohh i like this explanation! 😊
Here's a fun peice of trivia for you: Depeche Mode never use the same samples over again. Every song has its own unique sound bank.

I absolutely love Depeche Mode! I recommend a song i recently discovered called “leave in silence”, people are people is also so good!
