Your next review in the Tears for Fears discography has to be either Shout , Mad World , or Head Over Heels . Three absolute classics ! You will enjoy all 3 Aileen !!
Yeah, my brother bought this album back in 1985. Songs from the Big Chair was on our record player constantly. I remember thinking: Man this is a great album!
People often don't realise how deep and profound their early work was pre this song , this album was a bit of a lighter departure with flavours of that earlier work
If the 80's had an official song, it would be this one. This song just captures the essence of the 80's. Free spirited and fun. I miss those days more and more every single day
"Shout" is the quintessential Tears for Fears song. You can't listen to the group without having that song going on in your head. You need to check it out.
One of my favorite ever "tears" moments was seeing them in 1993 (with only orzabel) and Gayle Ann Dorsey on bass The back ground vocals on Woman in Chains was AMAZING SO DAMN MOVING WOW
That's an excellent list. I suppose it would be obligatory to add "Mad World," but if I had to pick just one song from their first album, it would be "Pale Shelter."
My first record was in 1960 in London and "Advice For The Young At Heart" is one of my Top 10 of all time with the accompanying video showing a Latino Wedding..
Glad you mentioned it--one of my all time favorites for cool riffs. The one at the end is fire. You should watch the version when they do it live at "The Proms" It's on TH-cam.
I'm a metal head but have never had a problem listening to Tears for Fears. The guitarist is also a great singer. Check out some of their other music to see him take the lead on vocals. He is also a really solid guitar player.
Just here to say I'm a metalhead guitarist who can sing, rap, and even produce beats yet you'll find more 70s and 80s music on my Playlists. One day i could be listening to elvis and the next i could be listening to twista. From the Beatles to frank Sinatra or 311 to killswitch engage. Being diverse no matter how painful (country 😅) the transitions can be will inevitably broaden your musical horizons.
HAHA...I love that movie! I swear, Mitch is played by Sarah Jessica Parker...you can't convince me otherwise, LOL! Once you see it; you can't unsee it 🤣
Curt Smith went viral during the pandemic for posting a duet with his daughter covering the bands hit “Mad World”. It’s beautifully done and it’s cool to see he still very much has it.
I grew up with this wonderful music. The lyric, "There's a room where the light won't find you Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down When they do, I'll be right behind you" rips me apart every time. It reminds me of my late mother's love. So powerful.
This song is an example of the perfect summer song. Whether you're sitting and looking out at a beautiful landscape, hanging out at the river, downtown at a summer parade or cruising on a freeway with the top down of your car. this song is just all of that and then some 🙏
Fun fact, we have a speech therapist to thank for the wonderful voice of the singer, as a kid he had a really serious stutter, and his therapy included singing lessons to learn better control of his diaphragm, this is where he (the singer) discovered that he enjoyed singing and actually sounded pretty darn good, and... he did not stutter during singing. Over the years he got better and better at singing and learned to control his stutter thnx to that, and eventually it gave us this amazing band for the ages with songs that stand the test of time.
@@JS-TexanJeff Yeah there have been a good few great singers with a stutter when speaking normally, several country singers if i recall correctly. Tbh, singing as therapy? sounds like one of those rare occasions when therapy is actually fun hehehe
This is my favorite song of theirs. It was used in the soundtrack of many 80s films, including "Real Genius" starring Val Kilmer, where Val had the line "Ice is nice!" Little did he know that a year later he's be playing the "Ice man" in Top Gun and he was anything but nice! As for the gas prices, yeah, it hurts. When I drove my 1999 Ford F-250 off the lot in 1999 I remembered the first fuel up. Diesel cost $1.17 a gallon. 271,000 miles later, it still runs like a dream.
@@Isleofskye Here in northern Arizona, the prices for fuel are as follows for 24 May, 2024: Regular = $3.68 Midgrade = $3.88 Premium = $4.28 Diesel = $3.85 That's price per gallon.
Aileen, 'Tears for Fears' are a band from the U.K. they formed in 1980 and had many hits through the '80s into the '90s and beyond. Songs which I recommend by them are: "Mad World", "Memories Fade", "Change", "Ideas as Opiates", "Pale Shelter", "Watch Me Bleed", "Shout", "Head Over Heels", "Sowing the Seeds of Love", "The Way You Are". There are many more but these are good ones to continue with.
A few other Tears for Fears Songs to listen to are 'Pale Shelter', 'Mad World', 'Change', 'Shout', 'Woman in Chains', 'The Seeds of Love' and 'The Year of the Knife'
Tears for Fears is the epitome of the 1980's music, as much as Madonna or Cyndi Lauper, or the hair bands. Love their music, especially this song and Suffer the Children, my 2 favorites
A great blend of electronic sounds and traditional instruments, and two incredible singers. And those Eighties haircuts & clothes! Fantastic group with a library of great songs. "Head Over Heels" features in "Donnie Darko" and plays so well with the sequence in the film it's lined up with.
Now you need to go watch Wierd Science and fully embrace the 80s. Follow it up with Farris Bulers Day Off and Goonies. The 80s starter kit. Just add neon colors
Such powerful '80s vibes! This one is always good for an encore. Everyone had great hair in the '70s and '80s. Yes, check out the official music video for their hit song HEAD OVER HEELS.
Their song 'Shout' was also covered by Disturbed in 2000. The final track on their 1985 album is called 'Listen', and while it's not a popular choice, I always found it so relaxing, that by the end of the song, I would be effectively immobilized.
Aileen you hit it on the nose I have been saying it for years I am 56 and 80's is where my heart is. When a new song came on the radio we never heard before we INSTANTLY knew who it was. Tears for Fears Joan Jett, Flock of Seagulls, Simple Minds, David Bowie, Cindy Lauper, Human League, Level 42, Thomas Dolby Depeche Mode witch by the way I would love to see you react to them and on and on In metal we had Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Scorpions, Whitesnake. You would have LOVED growing up in that era of music mastery. Thank you for reacting to them. Much Love.
Well stated, the radio….(instantly thought of Rush & Queen) brought us everything, & if I didn’t have it on, I was burning through my cassette case cruisin the strip on the weekends!😎🤘
"Head over Heels," "Sowing the Seeds of Love," "Shout"! These guys are the Pink Floyd of 80s and 90s pop music (maybe along with Pet Shop Boys)--very thoughtful lyrics and top-notch musicianship! P.S. Those gas prices are high even for that time. Those were the prices you'd pay if you were driving between L.A. and Las Vegas.
Great review to an iconic song, an iconic band. Tears For Fears were big back in the 80s. Please check out Shout, Head over Heels, and Sowing The Seeds of Love. Love from the UK!!!
Thanks Alieen for visiting my favorite era for music the 1980’s. So much great music to choose from. Can you look into bands such as U2, INXS, The Police The Cure and The Talking Heads. Highly appreciate you. Thanks for your energy and great smile.
Always loved these guys, certainly a distinctive, gorgeous sound. "SHOUT" is a great choice for Round #2. I bought a couple 12" club mixes of theirs on vinyl back in the day that had some really great stuff on them. Great pick for us today, thanks Aileen! :)
Great GREAT band from the UK. Great Music!! They just got back together a couple of years ago after not talking with one another for over ten years. They released a new album called The Tipping Point, a bit dark, but really really good. One of my all time favourite bands.
fun fact The year the song came out, it was featured in the ending to the science fiction comedy film Real Genius. In 1986, the song won Best Single at the Brit Awards.
ahhh yes the 80s what a fantastic time to be alive. Had no Idea Id miss it so much. I being a straight yup MetalHead loved these guys with 'Songs from the Big Chair' and let them into my music sanctuary. Not knowing back then they were music geniuses that have stood the test of time... #Shout #HeadOverHeels
Great song from my childhood, great to see Curt and Roland getting a lot of praise in 2024. They had a number of hit songs, but you should definitely check out "Shout!" next.
Shout, Sowing the Seeds of Love, Woman in Chains, Mad World. These four very different songs are not only great, they also show you how creative and great these musicians are.
Oh there are soooo many! ‘Woman in Chains’, ‘Sowing the seeds of love’, ‘shout’, killing with kindness’ elemental’, Mad World’, ‘ The tipping point’………
Yeah, this was a monster hit. My elder brother was very into Tears for Fears. I think I get it more with age. It was a type of music that grew out of psychology and post-punk music in Britain - and which, reconfigured, found a big audience in the 1980s.
Fits the themes of the movie and matches the moment so well. My favorite 80s movie, somehow criminally underrated now. An actual countercultural comedy that cares about actual nerds and holds up almost entirely compared to other 80s comedies.
Every song from the Album “Songs from the Big Chair” is gold. Also check out their other songs like Sowing the Seeds of Love, or Women in Chains. They are amazing
The funny thing is those were the "Side of the road in the middle of no-where" ripoff prices. The price shown here is $1.45 per gallon. The average price for a gallon of gas in 1985 (when this was released) was $0.88 according to eia.gov
Everytime I hear this song, I'm 14 again. Tears for Fears reminds me of so many things... I went to see them live & loved it. Happy to see GenZ enjoying it.
So so much more to this very underrated English band. Forget the singles, which are great, but concentrate on the album deep cuts. That’s where the gold is.
It was the subliminal song you hear in your head mellow and soft. Just 🙂 Nice feeling song. They looks so good here when you see them now your like WHAT. Ahhhh Youth enjoy it
Thank you for this reaction. You're amazing, don't ever stop being you. This song broke out the year I got my drivers license and I drove the entire summer to this song. You could say it was an anthem for the high-school kids of that time, and the 80's youth in general. Semi-random... That guitar work in the second half of the bridge is subtle and nuanced, but completely outstanding. Anyway, again, thank you.
Great reaction! Such a smooth and skilled band, still one of my favorites. Head Over Heels and Sowing the Seeds of Love are my other two favorites that you should absolutely listen to.
Huge song in the 80s. The video also reflects the vibe of the time, maybe because I was in college at the time living in a beach community in So. Cal, it really brings back so many similar care free memories that was shown.
This was filmed in the Imperial Valley of central Southern California, where the big sand dunes are used for ATV activity. It's really the middle of nowhere. And we were appalled by those gas prices then, it used to be 25 cents a gallon just about 10 years earlier.
This was a bit before my time, but it was an era where record labels went out and hunted for musicians and bands. Now the record labels create the musicians and bands. They find one sound that is popular and flood the market with carbon copies until everyone is tired of it. That is by design to make as much money as possible in as short amount of time as possible. It's not about the art anymore.
It wasn't heavily played on the radio but they had a masterpiece with the song "Woman in Chains." Oleta Adams sang lead with Roland Orzabal and her performance was so outstanding that it really should have received more acclaim. And the song's messaging is strong. Worth the listen.
This is my favorite pop band of all time. So many timeless hits and they still sound great now. Saw them a couple of years ago when they were touring with their brand new album! Their voices are still super clean, you can really tell they have taken good care of their vocals.
Curt Smith (lead vocals on this song) and Roland Orzabal (on the guitar, and backing vocals) trade lead vocals on their songs. The entire album that this song comes from 'Songs From the Big Chair' is a masterpiece of the 80s. "Shout" and "Head Over Heels" are also both amazing singles from the album. This song was the last one recorded for the album, as it just started as a guitar riff that Roland would play. Their producer forced them to keep working on a song using the riff all during the making of the album, eventually creating this gem. In my top 10 of the 1980s...this is like #3 for me. I adore this song.
Another great band from a great era of music. This song was also played at the end of the 1985 movie "Real Genius". As mentioned below, I'll second the "Shout" and "Head Over Heels" recommendations.
Tears for Fears was a new wave band that came out in the early '80's. I wasn't really into new wave, but these guys were quite a bit better than the average fare of the day. Both Curt (lead singer) and Roland look quite a bit different now from what they did then.
One of the big bands I can remember from my early- to mid-teenage years in the 80's with several hits to their name. Shout, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Mad World, Sowing the Seeds of Love and more. And very distinctive. You definitely know it's them you're hearing if you've ever heard them before.
Love that closing scene. Dusk is such a beautiful time of day and there is something really sad when he passes that road sign and how it gets further and further away. The guitar Lord the guitar, take away the music this is just an ordinary scene. Add the music back in though it becomes extraordinary. ♥️
This is my favorite Tears for Fears song. I was a teen when it came out. It was in the outro for the movie "Real Genius." I was off to college a scant couple of years later. The line that has stuck with me all of these years since is "I can't stand this indecision, married with a lack of vision". There are a number of ways to interpret the song. I choose to see it as a call to live your life despite all of the turmoil in the world.
one of the biggest hits of the entire decade....Tears For Fears are very good...a lot of great songs...people have mentioned them in the comments already but Shout, Head Over Heels, Sowing the Seeds of Love, Mad World, Pale Shelter, Woman in Chains...if not for the channel you should check them out on your own... :)

One of the greatest bands of this era. Exceptional artists
Saw them at the odeon around 85 and they were absolutely superb live.
Great band and glad to see they came back with a very strong album recently.
My favourite lyric: "I can't stand this indecision, married with a lack of vision" really is a timeless statement.

The band actually has two great singers! This song was sung primarily by Curt. Check out "Head Over Heels" to see Roland front and center.
This brings back memories of when I was in the Marine corps. A bunch of guys sitting around cleaning our M16's. Singing this, the irony just hit me.

And that's what was so great about how most 80's music made you feel; there was so much talent and a ton of eclectic music from many genres.
Head Over Heels, Shout, Mad World, Pale Shelter, absolute banging tracks
Huge song in the 80s. The video also reflects the vibe of the time, maybe because I was in college at the time living in a beach community in So. Cal, it really brings back so many similar care free memories that was shown.
This was filmed in the Imperial Valley of central Southern California, where the big sand dunes are used for ATV activity. It's really the middle of nowhere. And we were appalled by those gas prices then, it used to be 25 cents a gallon just about 10 years earlier.
It was the subliminal song you hear in your head mellow and soft. Just 🙂 Nice feeling song
This is the '80s in a nutshell. TFF were phenomenal, always will be. Do Pale Shelter next.
Shout, or head over heels, or mad world, or woman in chains. So much good music by this band!
Head over heels, sowing the seeds, shout! All are fantastic!
They are an excellent band. Yes, please, Shout and Head Over Heels. These guys wrote the beautiful Mad World.
It wasn't heavily played on the radio but they had a masterpiece with the song "Woman in Chains." Oleta Adams sang lead with Roland Orzabal and her performance was so outstanding that it really should have received more acclaim. And the song's messaging is strong. Worth the listen.

Tears for Fears: Roland & Curt recently released a new album, The Tipping Point in 2022
This is my favorite pop band of all time. So many timeless hits and they still sound great now. Saw them a couple of years ago when they were touring with their brand new album! Their voices are still super clean, you can really tell they have taken good care of their vocals.
Their whole collection is fab - def worth the trip down the rabbit hole x
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down, great lyrics. Pale Shelter next please
You're right, their voices are unmistakable. Check out their song "Shout", then check out Disturbed's cover of it as well.
This song and this video is the concentrated and distilled 80's in it's purest form.
Still My All Time Favourite Song of the 1980's {Love This One} ...
We had it all in the 80s. I loved being young during this time. Life was simple and amazing
one of the biggest hits of the entire decade....Tears For Fears are very good...a lot of great songs...people have mentioned them in the comments already but Shout, Head Over Heels, Sowing the Seeds of Love, Mad World, Pale Shelter, Woman in Chains...if not for the channel you should check them out on your own... :)
Dont sleep on Sowing the seeds of Love, its a fantastic song
