  • Fast lap, despite making a mess of turn one and the bus stop. Couldn't improve on this lap today though.
    I used a setup from giggidy_oh. It's made for Monza but works great here too. Link: • Assetto Corsa (PS4) - ...
    I used manual ERS deployment. To see where I deployed look at the green LED over the right thumb. On the exit of the bus stop chicane i switched to balanced low, just so I could focus on the exit without having to manually deploy. Still made a mess of it....

    • @shawn197
      @shawn197  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man! 1:49 is that car is respectable especially for a new driver.
      To chop of the next few seconds it’s all about mastering the basics. Use the full width of the track, both entry, apex and exit.
      Don’t brake too late. It’s always tempting to brake as late as possible, but braking a fraction too late will cost you a lot by giving you a poor exit. Instead brake a bit earlier, and make sure you can get a good exit.
      And final tip, be smooth. Not just with the steering, but also with throttle inputs.
      So basically, try not to overdrive the car. Overdriving is easily the biggest mistake I see new (and also experienced) drivers do, and it kills both lap time, consistency and the ability to race side by side.

    • @shawn197
      @shawn197  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I remember I was deep into the 1:50's when I started driving F1 cars at Spa. I think the saying "slow is smooth and smooth is fast" can help a lot when trying to get a low 1:50 or even sub 1:50. Don't try to brake super late, and don't try to carry too much speed into the corner. Instead slow down in a controlled fashion, take it easy into the corner and set up the car so you can get early on the throttle.

    • @shawn197
      @shawn197  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@nourechaara5409 It's solid. If you can consistently hit 1:50 in a public lobby race you'll probably finish around the middle.
      That being said, you can probably knock off a couple of seconds relatively easy if focus on getting good exits and trust the car more in the corners, because the stock setup has a lot of downforce.
      One big issue with the stock setup at Spa is the gearing though, you've probably felt that when you hit 312 in 7th gear early on the straights. By extending the gears a bit you can find 0,5 - 1 second on the straights quite easy I think.

    Is the high downforce working better for you? Have you tried a low downforce set up?
    Whenever I reduce the rear downforce I seem to always get a a better lap time, but I'm all the way down to 2 rear wing and stuck at 1:48 and can't reduce any further. Les Combes exit and Campus exit are partial throttle and they are always super messy with a lot of opposite lock every other lap. Although I don't seem to be able to work the high rear downforce set up.

    • @shawn197
      @shawn197  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have tried lower downforce, though not as low as you. Basically I've found lowering the wings give a very little boost to top speed, but a pretty big penalty to cornering grip. Due to the gear ratios and the power curve of the engine it doesn't really like going much faster than 330 no matter what.
      Also, with higher wings you can actually be faster on some straights! Well, maybe not when it comes to top speed, but since you start the straight faster, the average speed can be higher.
      I'm guessing you can be quicker too with higher wings, but you really need to trust the car. The grip in the corners is crazy, but if you don't trust it you will not go fast on the corners, and obviously also struggle on the straights.

    • @shawn197
      @shawn197  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can’t, like the real car they are locked. However, they are not at all to long, if anything they can be a bit short for the faster tracks.
      What I’m guessing you do is shifting too late. Due to the fuel flow regulations of these engines, the rev limiter is much higher than the power peak. As you see, I shift when the blue lights starts to light up, this is around 11500rpm, while the limit is regulated to be 15000rpm. If you wait all the way to red line, you will lose a lot of power and have poor acceleration.

      @shawn197  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Good question. Pretty much every racing car you want to upshift as close to the rev limiter as possible. But these V6's produce peak power waaaay before the limiter because they reach the maximum fuel flow at 10500rpm, as stated in the technical regulations.
      So many miss this though online, and rev all the way to the limiter. Not only is it slow as heck since you lose a lot of power, but it also sounds rubbish :P

      Start braking hard, and downshift aggressivly. As soon as you start turning in, start backing off the brake, quite substantially.
      Also play around with the brake balance. If the fronts lock up, dont be afraid to move the balance back. You can also bind a button to your input device so you can change it on the fly.
      Also, it is much more important to get a good exit than to brake as late as possble. Locking up can lose you many tenths, even seconds. Braking 10m early, maybe a tenth lost but you'll easily get a very good exit.

      I'd love to mate!
      I think the best way for me to help you would be if you could upload one of your laps so I could check it out. But I can also give you some general tips and tricks.
      One common "mistake" I see a lot of drivers doing is not using all the track, especially on entry. Not using all the track means you have to take less speed around the corner and you'll also have to brake early because of that. Look at how I braked for turn one for example, that's how wide you wanna go on a perfect lap.
      ERS management is key, especially around a long track like Spa. If yoy simply leave it in hotlap mode you will run out before the end and lose a lot. I often use the charging mode and then manually deploy where needed. I try to mostly use it at "low" speed since that's where it's most efficient. If you look for the green LED above the drivers right thumb you can see when I boost. Notice how I stop boosting around halfway down the Kemmel straight, I bellieve this is pretty close to optimal ERS usage.
      This is also a car that you can downshift really aggressivly in (much more than what they do IRL), and this helps when braking since you'll have more engine braking and thus you can brake later.
      Finally when I try to set a world record I lower the temperature to 10°c. This gives more grip, and more power from the engine due to the denser air. Compared to running at 26° it probably gives you at least a second.
      That's all I can think of right now. Feel free to ask more, and I'd love to check your lap and give you some pointers!

    • @shawn197
      @shawn197  ปีที่แล้ว

      First thing to look at is the driving. The setup does have a tendency to oversteer, especially in the power. This is partly why it is quick.
      To deal with this oversteer you need to be smooth, both with the steering and with the pedals. Study the video for reference.
      One thing to note, once you start sliding the rears will overheat quickly. Overheating means less grip, and you start sliding more. Basically an evil circle.
      Also if you aren’t driving in cold conditions (10c in the video) ditch the ultra soft tyres. They overheat easily, and you’ll have little grip. Try the soft tyres in normal or hot temperatures. If they feel good, you can try the super softs, though they can also suffer in the heat on a circuit like Spa.
      Setup wise there are a lot of stuff you can do. You can add some rear wing, or lower the front wing. You can try softening the rear springs or anti roll bar. You can stiffen the front springs or roll bar. You can lower the rear ride height. Only change one parameter at a time before testing, so you can feel what is working and what is not working.

      How are you using you ERS? Here I press the overtake button from the exit of T1 all the way to after the DRS activation. I also put the MGU-K in motor mode. Combined this gives maximum power, and quite a bit more than using using the stock setting.
      When you change gear also matters a lot in this car. You can rev it much higher than I do here before hitting the limiter, but this is slow and inefficient. If you look at the shift lights I barely reach the blue ones before upshifting. If I shifted at the limiter (like I see a lot of people do) I could probably reach Eau Rouge in 6th gear while still being fully on the throttle and using maximum power.
      Also if you don't get a good exit (wheelspin, too high gear, too little throttle, too little apex speed) that's gonna affect your speed all the way down the straight when accelerating.
      It could be a lot of stuff, but without a video it is hard to say for sure.

      Hmm, it depends how you count really.
      I’ve mostly played racing games since I was a little kid, starting with Need for speed 2.
      First game I played with a wheel was Gran Turismo 5. I just played for fun, wasn’t very good.
      Got AC when it was in early access, 2013 I think. Played it a bit, but had no idea how people were so much faster than me, because I thought I was fast myself. Spoiler: I was very slow, mainly due to overdriving.
      So around 2016 I watched a video called “Skip Barber: Going faster”. I thought me a lot, especially how important getting a good exit was. After that I started applying it to my driving.
      For months I drove online, at Spa in the F138. Started off well into the 1:50, fast guys were doing 1:46 ish. I kept just focusing on that for months. Gradually getting faster and faster, and by late 2016/early 2017 I was challenging for the WR at that time.
      Then after that I have kept working on, but I don’t think I have gotten that much faster when it comes to peak pace, but I’d still beat 2017 me 10/10 times because now I am much more consistent and better at racing.
      So in short, I spent many years just driving. Having fun, but being slow. Only I looked into how you have to drive in order to actually drive fast, and practiced that, then I rapidly got a lot better.
      Hopefully that makes some sense, was a bit of a ramble and I wrote it on the phone :P

      @@shawn197 It’s awesome to hear your story it really helps a lot🔥. I know everyone is different but I was hoping to get an idea so that I can kind of know if I’m making good progress.
      I got my first wheel (t150 with the terrible stock pedals) in January of 2022. I started with Gran turismo sport just for fun. Later in the year I got AC and ACC and started looking towards getting quick.
      I was shockingly slow when I started off but I started working on correct technique and fixing bad habits from TH-cam videos (Suellio Almeida really helped)
      I upgraded to tlcm loadcell pedals around a couple of months ago and they helped with my consistency. I’m now currently able to do times like 1.27.8 at silverstone and 1.43.0 at spa in the sf70h although I know I have a little more pace if I can iron out my mistakes.
      What’s your practice routine like? And do you have any advice for me to find the remaining time I’m losing?

    • @shawn197
      @shawn197  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@nevillemolokwu8598 Personally I dont really have a practice routine. If I'm doing a race, or trying for a hotlap I usually just do some laps just to see where I am. Then I look at the times and laps others are doing and see where I'm losing out. Then its just more seat time really, to properly learn the car and track.
      And that would be my advice to you too. Look at the laps faster guys do, and compare it to yours. Do it corner by corner, how are they placing the car on entry, where do they brake, how much do they trail brake etc.
      Taking that last second or two is all about very small details adding up over a full lap.

    • @shawn197
      @shawn197  3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@sebastianbernabe3800 I am not using automatic gearing (that would be painfully slow, and my shift points are pretty much optimal. The reason for this is that the modern power units in F1 are a bit funny. The regulated maximum rpm is 15000, yet no team has gotten close to this. The peak power is produced at around 10500 rpm due to the regulated maximum fuel flow that is reached at that point. Basically you start losing power when going over 10500 rpm.
      The SF70H in game has a rev limit of around 13000 rpm I think, and a lot of people rev up to that before shifting gears. That is not fast and the LEDs on the steering wheel has been screaming for ages that you should change up. If you look at the LED's on the steering wheel when I change up usually most of the blue LEDs are on, which I think is just over 11000 rpm.
      Other cars in the game are similar, like the 2015 F1 car and the Ferrari GT2 car where you should shift way before the rev limiter if you want maximum power.

      Now, AC in this car definitely lets you get away with a bit too high RPM under downshifting before the engine takes damange. However, just like in real racing, in order to win you push the limit as much as you're allowed to.

      @@moussakamal1633 If that's exactly what you're saying something was lost in translation. Previously you said you braked, then did all the downshifts. F1 drivers obviously do not do that, as showed in the video. Also, as I said the game let's you downshift faster in this car (look at any other video I have and the gear shifts are just like in F1) and doing so is faster, so I do it, as I said in the first comment.
      Also, the real LEDs and game LEDs are different. The game ones turn on earlier. In my video for instance the red LEDs are almost always on, even when I shift at the blue lights. IRL they all turn turn off for every shift. Basically this means that when you downshift in the game, more LEDs are on, so not comparable.

      Eh, this generation of F1 were absolutely glued to the ground. In 2020 it was especially extreme, look at Hamiltons pole lap here at spa for example. Barely a single correction on the wheel, and completely planted in the high speed corners. Takes pouhon flat, and the lap is half a second quicker than this one. Of course, the 2020 cars were faster, but in the sim you can set the track conditions to be much better than what you get most days irl.
      Obviously a 10 year old sim is not gonna match up 1:1 with real life though, not even the actual sims the teams use do that.
