  • In this video, I ride the Noblesville, Indiana to Fishers, Indiana section of the Nickel Plate Trail. The current trail runs approximately 8 miles from 8th and Pleasant in Noblesville, Indiana to just short of 96th street in Fishers, Indiana.
The trail is planned to run down to the Indiana State Fairgrounds at 38th and Fall Creek Parkway in Indianapolis. The trail is expected to join up to the Monon Trail at 38th Street in Indianapolis. Allowing for a significant loop up the Monon Trail, across the Midland Trace and down the Nicket Plate Trail. It will also join up with the Fall Creek Trail that will run from the State Fair Grounds to the northern shores of Geist Reservoir.
It was an extremely windy day, so I couldn't keep the audio from the recording. Please excuse my first attempt at a voice over.

Greetings Two Wheel Wanderer (sorry I don't know your name). I wanted to touch on the contention between "acoustic" cyclists and E-bike riders. I generally do not have a problem with E-bike riders, I usually have a smile for everyone I meet. The problem is children and some young adults who like to zip by you at 25 +mph on a path. Sometimes there are little children just learning how to ride a bike or perhaps a dog on a leash that will cross into the other lane unexpectedly and if they try and pass them at a high rate of speed, they are flirting with disaster. You mentioned in one of your previous vids about the lady that was involved in an accident with a teen riding an E-bike down in Florida that died, although we don't know the details it was a tragedy. Now on the other side of the coin, there are the courteous E-bikers such as yourself. Even though there are posted signs "no motor vehicles" I think there should be exceptions. It may be that a person likes to ride a bike, but just can't physically do it, or perhaps they are elderly and don't feel safe riding on the street. This is just my opinion. There is room for all respectful and courteous riders on the path. BTW... Great job with the voice over.

Thank you. I agree about the kids and adults riding irresponsibly. Unfortunately, there must be some sort of legislation that needs to be passed to try to manage and prevent injury and danger to others. I say unfortunately, because increased legislation requires a period of correction to over legislation.
Given the somewhat newness of e-bikes, I think there is a misunderstanding of what a motor vehicle is. Especially regarding the signs that state no motor vehicles. At least in my state and many others, Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes are classified as bicycles in the motor vehicle code.
Indiana also restricts public paved trails to class 1 and class 2 e-bikes. Class 3 e-bikes are only allowed on them if the trail is adjacent to a roadway. There doesn’t seem to be any public education to what the law states. I’ve even thought about making pamphlets to give to people that either have questions or outright scream at you. LOL
It is when you get above these classes that they really become something else similar to higher displacement gas scooters and 50cc+ motorcycles. The laws for classification haven’t caught up to these types of “e-bikes”. So much so, that they really need a new term for them.
I think California just passed laws regarding wattage and speed limits for kids bikes. That is a good thing. Indiana only has a restriction on the Class 3 ebikes that says anyone 16+ can ride them. Even a Class 1 or Class 2 is dangerous for children. Maybe a new classification needs to be created that only allows 8 or 10 mph pedal assistance and no throttle for kids. /shrug
Hopefully, our communities can start to work together to lay out thoughtful plans to make the trails safe for us all. Thank you for watching. I really do appreciate it. I really enjoy your videos, too.
