    I came out of the hospital after having pneumonia and interstitial lung disease, which I presently have. I am amazed at the comments where people were never given any instructions on how to use the spirometer. I wasn’t given any instructions either until I started looking into TH-cam. Thank you so much for this instruction.

    I just passed my 7 year anniversary for a double lung transplant. My at home spiros and clinic spiros have dropped a bit giving me some cause for concern. Pulmonologist suggested that I exercise my lungs by taking deep breaths. While sorting thru my office closet, I came across the spirometer given to me when I was in the hospital back in 2016. Just to refresh my memory as how to use the spirometer I watched this FABULOUS video. Great job!!! I don't recall ever getting such great instructions. Even while still in the hospital, I was using it incorrectly. My sole goal was to raise the round disc as high as I could get it. Now I understand why the technique shown in the video is more effective.

    I am a 5 year survivor of Lung Ca. I had upper right love removed and I have been carefully monitored since 2018. I am truly blessed. But I have been using the spirometer completely wrong for all this time.
    It makes me panic when I can't reach 2500ml, and I want to know what level is "good". I am 70 years old, and have some autoimmune stuff but I exercise religiously and try my very best to stay well.

    • @BreatheBetterwithElizabeth

      When you have surgery, you don’t move around as much as normal so you don’t breathe as deeply. This can cause pneumonia. The spirometer forces you to take deeper breaths.

    At the end of each inhale, I remove the mouthpiece from my mouth and then place the mouthpiece back into my mouth when I'm ready to perform another inhale.

      If you have an incentive spirometer for home use, it’s a good idea to clean it daily.
      Detach the mouthpiece from the base of the device and clean it with clean running water and antibacterial soap for about 20 seconds. Then wash the rest of the spirometer with water and soap.
      You can also put on protective gloves and soak the separate pieces in a 5% bleach and water solution for about five to 10 minutes. Periodically swish the pieces in the solution to help clean the device. Thoroughly rinse the pieces in clean running water after five to 10 minutes.
      Make sure the incentive spirometer is dry before your next use.

    Thank you so much for the video. I was in the hospital 90 days with covid & they never explained the proper way to use this contraption. Mine is a little different. Instead of the blue ball & arrows to show proper use, mine is a yellow ball and a smiley face/sad face indicator.
    My question is, now that I'm using it correctly, I can get the plunger to move up, but I can't get the ball into the happy face range. I am taking slow deep breathes but the ball barely moves. I can get the plunger up to about 750. I do have bronchiectasis & the right side of my diaphragm is paralyzed from being on a ventilator. Am I doing something wrong or is it just my impairment?

    • @BreatheBetterwithElizabeth
      @BreatheBetterwithElizabeth  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It could be a malfunction of the spirometer, or the diaphragm ailment. I would keep attempting it.

    Could someone please say which line of the moving thick cylinder is the volume line?
    It's a big thick cylinder. So it does matter.
    My instructions says nothing which one is the line to use and the drawn images show a cylinder as thick as half an inch where it wouldn't matter. But the cylinder is as long as in this type with the thick blue moving cylinder.
    Our cylinder is green and has one white middlish-rim.
    When I want eg to breath in 1000ml, set the little indicating pointer for better orientation on 1000ml, how far up does that dang thick cylinder have to move to be more or less 1000ml.....?
    - the top end at 1000ml
    - the middle line at 1000ml
    - the lower/bottom end at 1000ml
    ????
    No one says that and the cylinder length is a big volume difference.
    If doc says to 1000ml I would like to know where the cylinder should hover to be 1000ml.
    The foldable tube is fully extended and much longer than your model, to get correct ml.
    Guys, make sure you pull the tube out fully. Otherwise again wrong volume. Also hold it directly opposite: mouth same height as tubing stem. Like she showed, but didn't explicitly say.
    We had a 3 ball spirometer beforehand. Utter useless thing. You HAD to breath in real fast (one user manual actually said fast, another said slowly, which never ever even moved one ball despite ample ml inhale)
    and hurting rips to get all balls up as the air excavation cuts were so big that the balls fell very quickly or didn't even rise. Was painful after rip cage surgery and wrong spirometer.
    This type of spirometer is kind and allows slow inhalation.🎉

    I just don't k own why at the hospital they don't teach us how to so it correctly. Like I didn't know what the arrow was for but I do remember the nurse putting it at 1250 and telling me I need to bring it up to that I had pneumonia and I couldn't pass the 250 mark I'm telling her I'm having a hard time oh your being a big baby. When 4 days before that I had a foul liquid coming out of my mouth it was disgusting they had to put a chest tube from my back and kept me in the hospital for a whole week. I learned how to do it correctly watching this video about a year ago and every time I feel short of breath I use it and it helps. Well today I woke up and feel like I'm in the beginning stage of pneumonia I'm scared but I've been using this all day and just took my last antibiotic I had for just in case. But over all now I k ow why the Dr told me use it as much as you can it's a life saver.. thanks for the video

    • @BreatheBetterwithElizabeth
      @BreatheBetterwithElizabeth  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, they all work the same way. You can do this as little or as much as you want really. You just don’t want to do more than 10 breaths or so at a time because you may hyperventilate and get dizzy. I usually recommend doing about 10 breaths in the morning and 10 breaths later in the day. But you can add or subtract from that depending on how well you tolerate the exercise.

      It really depends on why your oxygen is low. What this does it strengthen in respiratory muscles and forces you to breathe easier, opening up your smaller airways in the base of your lungs.

      Hi! The spirometer can help strengthen your respiratory muscles and make you take deeper, more intentional breaths. It won’t help with the fibrosis itself, but can help with symptom control! You can find a similar one in my Amazon Store.

      @@pmartin7397 I’ve heard people say that, but my personal opinion is that it’s not necessary. This is meant to help you breathe from deeper in your lungs while working your respiratory muscles. When you inhale slowly, there’s no need to hold your breath.

      You can add a breath hold for 3-5 seconds once your muscles are stronger. If you breathe in slowly from the bottom to the top, keeping the blue ball in between the arrows, you’re keeping your lungs open for the duration of the inhale. I don’t typically recommend it starting off because most people will focus on the breath hold rather than the technique.
